Chapter 3 Confrontation
Not wanting to make a scene, Caroline meandered her way around the tables and towards Kitty. Kitty saw Caroline and the look on her face. Immediately Kitty knew that she had stepped into Caroline's so-called domain. Caroline approached Kitty, discreetly took hold of her arm, just above the elbow, and escorted her away from Victor's poker table. Not wanting to make a scene herself, Kitty allowed Caroline to lead her away.
When Caroline and Kitty were in a more secluded area, Caroline confronted Kitty. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"
Kitty looked at Caroline's hand, which still had a grip on her arm. "First, let go of my arm." Caroline removed her hand from Kitty's arm. "Second, I have no idea what you're talking about." Kitty tried to sound as innocent as she could, even though Kitty did have somewhat of an idea of what Caroline was referring to. However, she wanted to hear it from Caroline.
Caroline crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. "Don't play innocent with me, you little bitch. You know exactly what I'm talking about. I saw you with Victor Guidry. Do you have any idea who he is?"
Kitty put her hand to her chest. "Such vulgar language for a lady. I use that term loosely." Kitty smirked at Caroline.
"Right now I have the mind to slap that smirk off your face," Caroline threatened.
"You do and I'll claw your eyes out," Kitty responded with a threat of her own.
Caroline hadn't even known Kitty for a few hours, but was certain that the redhead standing in front of her probably could and would claw her eyes out. "You never answered my question about knowing Victor Guidry.
Should I?" Kitty answered with her own question. She honestly did not know who Victor Guidry was, but knew she was about to find out.
Caroline rolled her eyes, annoyed with Kitty's response. "He's only the top poker player in New Orleans."
"Really? The top poker player in New Orleans?" Kitty questioned. "I've never heard of him, and I'm pretty sure I would have."
"He only plays at the Amsterdam House," Caroline replied. "He and Mr. O'Neill are really good friends. When Victor isn't here playing poker, he's making money at Mr. O'Neill's dog fights. He's made a decent amount of money with poker and the dog fights"
"Okay fine, but what has you so upset?" Kitty asked. She suspected that Caroline made claims to Victor Guidry.
"The area you were in is my area. Victor is my customer," Caroline stressed. "Don't come waltzing in here thinking you're going to change that."
Kitty crossed her arms and shook her head. "Who says that's your area and Victor is your customer? Are those your rules? Mr. O'Neill never mentioned his girls having assigned areas or assigned customers. And just to let you know, Victor came up to me. So he obviously doesn't see you as his only customer or maybe he sees something better."
Knowing that Kitty wasn't going to back down, Caroline decided to give her a bit of advice. "Alright, but let me tell you something about Victor Guidry. His life is centered around gambling and dog fights. He has no intention of marriage or a family. So, if you're getting the notion that Victor is your ticket out of this life, think again."
"I'll take that into consideration," said Kitty. "Now, I'm not making any money standing here talking to you. Excuse me." Kitty walked away from Caroline and back to the hustle and bustle of the gambling area.
Val had been sitting at one of the tables, having a drink with one of the patrons, when she caught sight of Caroline and Kitty going off in a corner of the room. Her interest was definitely piqued. She could only imagine what was being said between the two of them. Seeing that her customer had finished his drink, Val quickly finished hers and stood up. The man stood up too.
"Thank you, for the drink," Val stated. "We'll have to enjoy each other's company again sometime."
"I look forward to it," the man responded as he tipped his hat and walked away from the table.
Val grabbed both glasses and walked to the bar. She placed the glasses on the counter. Her next mission was to talk to Kitty. Val was determined to find out what went on between her and Caroline. Kitty had her back turned to Val and did not see her come near her. Val tapped Kitty on the shoulder. Kitty turned around and saw Val standing there. She knew why Val was standing there. The look on Val's face spoke volume.
"Let me guess," said Kitty. "You want to know what happened between me and Caroline."
Val eagerly nodded her head. "Of course I do! Give me the details."
Kitty couldn't help but smile at Val's enthusiasm. "Oh well, she basically lectured me on being in her area and talking with Victor Guidry."
"What did you say?" Val was eager for more details.
Kitty shrugged her shoulders. "I pretty much let her know that I didn't care about her so-called rules, but not in those exact words."
"Good," Val replied. "It's about time someone stood up to her."
"Has she ever been physical with the other girls," Kitty asked.
Val slowly shook her head as she answered Kitty's question. "I don't believe so. Why? Was she physical with you?"
"Not really," Kitty replied. "She grabbed my arm, when she took me to the corner. But she also threatened to slap the smirk off my face."
Val's eyebrows went up. "Really? What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything. I simply told her I'd claw her eyes out if she did," Kitty answered.
As the night went on, the air, thick with cigar smoke, and the sounds of clinking coins, murmuring conversations, and the occasional shout of victory or defeat continued. The Amsterdam was an all night establishment, and the action showed no signs of slowing down. Victor Guidry on the other hand did show signs of slowing down. He snuffed out his deep brown Cuban cigar. Victor gathered his winnings and placed them in his wallet. It had been a good night, and he was hoping to make it an even better one. He scanned the room looking for Kitty. Time with her upstairs would be the perfect ending to his night.
Victor stood up and grabbed his deep black silk gambling jacket off the back of his chair. He rolled down his sleeves, buttoned the cuff links, and slipped his arms into the sleeves of his jacket. "Gentlemen, it's been a pleasure. I'll see you tomorrow night." Victor left the table in pursuit of Kitty Russell. He found her standing by the bar. Not wanting to waste any time, Victor made his way towards her. "Miss Russell."
Kitty turned around at the sound of her name. "Hello, Mr. Guidry. Did you make out well at your poker game?"
"I most certainly did," Victor responded with a smile. "And I'd like to spend some of my winnings on the most beautiful girl in this place. Will you give me the honor of escorting you upstairs?"
Kitty remembered her conversation with Caroline from a few hours earlier. She may have told Caroline that she didn't care about Caroline's rules, but Kitty had to be absolutely sure that Caroline wasn't Victor's girl. Kitty was not the type of person to come between a man and a woman. She had more class than that.
"Before I let you escort me upstairs," Kitty started to say.
Victor interrupted her. "Sweetheart, I know Dan's rules. He makes the customers show the girls their money before going upstairs." Victor pulled out his wallet from the inside breast pocket of his jacket and pulled out some bills. "You have nothing to worry about. I can pay for your services."
Kitty shook her head. "It's not that."
"Then what?" Victor inquired.
"How close are you and Caroline?" Kitty asked. "I have no intention coming between the two of you, if there's something going on."
"Kitty, honey, Caroline has no claim on me," Victor replied. "I keep going to her because she's a pretty girl and pleases me each time I see her. Now that I've seen you, I want to explore other options."
Kitty slightly bit her bottom lip and made a quick decision to entertain Victor up in her room. "Alright, let's go upstairs."
A satisfying grin spread across Victor's face. "Excellent my dear, shall we?" He offered Kitty his arm, which she took. Together the two of them meandered their way to the staircase and ascended the steps. Caroline, a mixture of anger and jealousy on her face, watched the pair.
Once upstairs, Victor wasted no time. He told Kitty exactly what he wanted from her and put his money on the table next to her bed. Both he and Kitty quickly stripped out of their clothing. Victor did engage in a little foreplay. Using his index finger, Victor checked to make sure Kitty was ready for him. He didn't like entering a dry woman. Realizing Kitty was wet, Victor guided his manhood inside of her. Soon he was grinding and humping inside of her, his grunts and moans getting louder and louder. Kitty tried her best to match his rhythms, but was having a hard time. Before Kitty knew what was happening, Victor quickly pulled out before he climaxed. He spilled his seed on Kitty's thigh and bedding, soiling her sheets. He rolled over, satisfied and panting.
Victor turned his head and looked at Kitty. "That was absolutely amazing. Just to let you know. I have my own rules. I never allow myself to spill my seed inside of a woman. I don't need some woman claiming she's having my baby." A few minutes later Victor got up and put his clothes back on. He looked over at Kitty, who was still in bed, but had pulled a sheet over her. "We'll have to do this again sometime." Kitty gave Victor a small smile and nodded her head. After he finished dressing, Victor left Kitty's room.
It was late, and Kitty had no intention of going back downstairs. She threw the sheet off of her and got up to lock her door. Remnants of Victor were still on her thigh. Kitty walked over to the pitcher of water and basin. She poured some water in the basin. First, Kitty washed off her face paint, revealing her dreaded freckles. Next, she washed her thigh. Once that was done, Kitty slipped into her nightgown and climbed into bed. She was exhausted, but sleep didn't come right away. It never did, no matter how tired she was. Kitty didn't know how much time had passed, but eventually she fell asleep.
