Finn stopped and looked at the arctic hares. If there ever was an animal he hated more than any other animal on this earth, it was the arctic hare. He didn't know this zoo had them. He just wanted to go on a date to prove a point.
His ex Dagny's favorite animal was the arctic hare. She knew so much about them that he found it ridiculous. It had started with little comments here and there but soon it turned into bullying whenever she as much as looked at them online without saying it out loud. He was doing his best to get her away from what he saw as a stupid interest and instead get her interested in the things he was interested in.
She reached her breaking point the day he told her that he would track one down, skin it alive, and hang it on the clothesline in his garden for her to look at if she didn't stop talking about them. She broke down crying that day. He knew he had stepped over the line but he refused to apologize. Now he wished he had.
She went home that day and he thought she just needed to cool off. That only lasted until midnight where she sent him a text saying they were done. He tried calling but she had already blocked him. He wasn't one to go to her and beg for forgiveness. He thought she would come around with time when she realized he wasn't giving in. Instead she continued living her life without him in it.
He kept stalking her online. He was sure she knew he was checking her profiles, and he was sure she was checking his too. He just wanted to keep an eye on her but he got more than he wished for. He watched as she fell in love with someone new. He watched as she moved in with him. He watched as she got engaged. And yesterday he watched when she got married. She was a beautiful bride with her long, light blonde hair and her pale blue eyes, and wearing that knee-long wedding dress. She wasn't traditional but that was one of the things he had loved about her.
He was desperate to show her he had moved on too. That was why he invited Kath on a date the day after Dagny's wedding. Kath looked so alike Dagny and that was the point. He wanted Dagny to see she was replaceable. It wasn't until this moment when he was staring at her favorite animal that he realized how wrong he had been. She wasn't checking his profiles. She had no idea he was on a date. She didn't care about him anymore. He sneered at the nearest arctic hare that seemed to be mocking him by simply looking at him.
"I hate you!" Finn growled.
"Excuse me?" Kath asked.
He looked to the side and saw she had heard every word. She thought he had been talking to her.
"Not you," he said. "That stupid hare."
"What did it do?" She asked.
"It exists," he answered.
"That makes no sense," she said.
"I just fucking hate arctic hares, alright? Stop pestering me about it. You're too pretty to start obsessing with them too," he said.
He turned to look at the same arctic hare again. He raises his middle finger at it and hoped it understood the gesture.
"Alright, how about we go look at..." He started.
He turned his head and stopped mid sentence.
"Kath?" He called.
He looked around but he couldn't see her anywhere. He started moving around, searching for her and calling her name. She had actually left him there all because of how he hated arctic hares. He couldn't believe it. He had lost a potential future replacement for Dagny for the same reason he lost the original.
"Fucking hares!" He growled.
He turned his head and stared at the same arctic hare. It was eating and didn't seem bothered at all. He ran his finger across his throat and pointed at it, hoping it would shit itself when going to bed tonight.
"Fuck you!" He said firmly.
A grandfather gave him a look and he understood he wasn't welcome at the zoo anymore with the way he was acting. He didn't want to be there anymore either. He stomped towards the entrance and out on the open street. He pulled his phone up and checked Dagny's Instagram. There was a picture of her and her husband smiling at an airport.
"Just arrived in Northern Canada for our honeymoon. Hopefully we'll get to see some arctic hares while we're here."
