Over the next few weeks, Link had spent more time with Momo, the two of them often talking and reminiscing about their respective worlds. Their quiet moments had started to become a routine, and Link found himself looking forward to the peaceful conversations. At the same time, he was often seen sparring with Yoruichi and Soi Fon, their intense training sessions drawing a crowd. Passersby would stop to watch the trio clash, their skills equally matched, with Yoruichi holding the lead in wins at 7, Link at 5, and Soi Fon at 4.
As a new day began, Link sat down for breakfast with Kyōraku, enjoying the calm start to his day. They shared a lighthearted conversation until a messenger arrived, clad in the distinctive garb of the Kuchiki clan.
"Hero Link," the messenger said formally, bowing deeply. "You are cordially invited to a private dinner at the Kuchiki estate, hosted by the Head of the Kuchiki clan, Byakuya Kuchiki, and his close family."
Link blinked, setting down his cup of tea as the weight of the invitation sank in. "A dinner with the Kuchiki clan? Why me?"
The messenger straightened, their face impassive. "Lord Kuchiki wishes to extend his gratitude for your efforts in the recent battle and to discuss matters of mutual interest. The dinner is scheduled for tomorrow evening."
As the messenger left, Link turned to Kyōraku, his expression uncertain. "What should I do? This feels… formal."
Kyōraku leaned back with a chuckle, his straw hat tipped slightly. "Well, Link, an invitation from Byakuya Kuchiki is no small thing. The Kuchiki clan's one of the most prestigious families in Soul Society. Turning it down might come across as disrespectful, and I doubt Byakuya would appreciate that."
Link frowned slightly, swirling his tea in thought. "But why me? I've barely spoken to him, and I'm not really a part of all this."
Kyōraku tilted his head, smiling knowingly. "That's exactly why. You're an outsider, yet you've already left quite the impression. Byakuya probably wants to evaluate you himself. Besides…" He smirked. "Rukia might have mentioned you."
"Rukia?" Link asked, his confusion growing.
"Rukia's his adopted sister," Kyōraku explained. "She's one of the more grounded members of his family. If she spoke well of you, that's probably why you're getting this invitation."
Link sighed, his apprehension still apparent. "Do you think I should go?"
Kyōraku nodded firmly. "Absolutely. It's a sign of respect, and who knows? Maybe you'll learn something interesting. Byakuya isn't as cold as he looks. Just be yourself."
After a pause, he leaned forward with a mischievous grin. "And try not to get too distracted if Rukia or anyone else gets too… friendly."
Link flushed slightly, earning a hearty laugh from Kyōraku. "Relax, Hero. You'll do fine. Just don't bring up anything too casual—Byakuya's not one for small talk."
Still unsure, but with Kyōraku's advice in mind, Link nodded. "Alright, I'll go."
Kyōraku raised his cup in a toast. "That's the spirit. Enjoy yourself—and good luck."
The evening arrived, and Link found himself standing at the grand gates of the Kuchiki estate. Clad in his Zora Tunic, its blue hue a symbol of Hyrule's royal advisors, he hoped the gesture of wearing something symbolic from his world would convey respect to the noble family. A servant escorted him through the sprawling grounds, the grandeur and serenity of the estate reminding him of the halls of Hyrule Castle.
As he entered the dining hall, he was met by the composed figure of Byakuya Kuchiki, his regal presence commanding attention even in a relaxed setting. Rukia stood beside him, offering Link a small smile that eased some of his nerves.
"Hero Link," Byakuya greeted, his tone measured and polite. "Welcome to the Kuchiki estate. Please, take a seat."
"Thank you, Lord Kuchiki," Link replied, bowing slightly. "It's an honor to be invited to your home."
Byakuya gave a faint nod as they all took their seats. Link glanced at Rukia, who offered him a polite nod but remained mostly quiet. A servant began pouring tea as the pre-dinner conversation unfolded.
Byakuya's sharp gaze settled on Link, his questions both curious and probing. "You come from a realm vastly different from ours, yet you've shown remarkable adaptability. Tell me, Hero, what are some of the practices or traditions from Hyrule that you believe would benefit Soul Society?"
Link paused, considering his answer carefully. "Hyrule places great value on balance—between the physical, the spiritual, and the natural world. The Sheikah, for example, dedicate themselves to protecting the royal family and maintaining peace from the shadows, much like the stealth and discipline your Onmitsukidō seems to embody. Perhaps some of their philosophies on balance could complement your training methods."
Byakuya listened intently, his expression unreadable. "Intriguing. You've clearly spent time among individuals who value discipline and strategy. Were they responsible for your proficiency in combat?"
"Yes," Link replied. "The Sheikah trained me extensively. Their approach blends physical strength with mental focus, teaching one to remain calm even in chaos. It's a mindset that's served me well, both in battle and in navigating this new world."
Byakuya nodded in approval before shifting the conversation. "You've also spoken of your world's Goddess. Have you seen or heard any sign of her presence here in Soul Society?"
Link hesitated, his mind drifting to the fleeting visions of Hylia he'd experienced since arriving. "I've felt… glimpses of her. I believe she watches over me, even here. Her presence is subtle but comforting."
Byakuya seemed to ponder this, his gaze momentarily distant before returning to Link. "Interesting. The existence of a deity that transcends worlds warrants deeper reflection."
As the conversation continued, Rukia remained mostly silent, her demeanor respectful but reserved. However, whenever Link directed a question toward her, she answered politely, her responses concise but thoughtful.
"So, Rukia," Link ventured, "what do you think of Hyrule, based on what you've heard?"
Rukia's eyes met his briefly, a hint of warmth breaking through her stoic exterior. "It sounds… fascinating. A world shaped by legends and a Goddess who directly intervenes in its fate. I imagine it must have been a heavy burden, carrying the hopes of an entire kingdom."
Link smiled faintly. "It was, but I wasn't alone. I had friends and allies who believed in me. That made all the difference."
Rukia nodded, her gaze softening slightly before she returned to her quiet observation.
As the dinner progressed, Link found himself more at ease, though Byakuya's probing questions and Rukia's reserved demeanor kept him on his toes. While the evening was formal, it carried an air of subtle intrigue, leaving Link curious about the Kuchiki family's true intentions behind the invitation.
As the evening wore on, the conversation took a more serious turn. Byakuya sipped his tea, his sharp gaze resting on Link as he began to speak.
"There has been much discussion among the noble families regarding your presence in Soul Society, Hero Link," Byakuya stated calmly. "Your prowess in battle and your unique origins have not gone unnoticed. Some have begun to consider what role you might play should you choose to remain here."
Link straightened slightly, sensing the weight behind Byakuya's words. "What kind of role are we talking about?"
Byakuya placed his cup down with deliberate precision. "The most prevalent suggestion is that you assume the role once held by the Shiba Clan. As you may know, they were a noble family of great renown, closely tied to Squad 0. Their fall from grace has left a void, one that the other noble families believe you may be suited to fill."
Link's brows furrowed. "I've heard of Squad 0, but I don't know much about what their connection to the Shiba was—or what that would mean for me."
Byakuya inclined his head slightly. "Squad 0 serves as the Royal Guard, protecting the Spirit King and his realm. While the Shiba's work was not directly within the Royal Palace, they were entrusted with tasks that supported the Royal Guard's mission. Should you accept such a role, you would not only serve as a bridge between Soul Society and the Royal Realm but also carry the expectation of reestablishing a noble lineage."
"Noble lineage?" Link repeated, a hint of uncertainty in his voice.
Byakuya's tone remained steady, almost clinical. "Should you accept, you would be expected to form a new noble family, much like the Kuchiki or Shihoin clans. That entails a significant responsibility—not only in leadership and duty but also in continuing your bloodline. Many noble families believe this would require you to take multiple wives to ensure the strength and continuation of your family."
Link blinked, his thoughts spinning. The idea of settling down in Soul Society was one thing; creating a noble family and the implications of multiple marriages were far beyond anything he'd considered.
Without pausing for Link's reaction, Byakuya continued, his tone as composed as ever. "Furthermore, one member of Squad 0 has expressed personal interest in meeting you. They are curious about your origins, your sword, and your connection to your world's Goddess. As the Kuchiki family currently holds the responsibility of liaising with Squad 0, I would act as the intermediary should this meeting come to pass."
Link let out a slow breath, trying to process everything. "This is… a lot to take in. I didn't realize so many decisions were being made about me."
Byakuya's gaze softened just a fraction, though his tone remained firm. "You have made an impression, Hero Link. Your actions in battle and your unique nature have sparked possibilities that the noble families cannot ignore. However, the choice is ultimately yours. No one can force you to stay or take on such a role."
Rukia, who had remained silent for much of the discussion, finally spoke up, her voice gentle but firm. "If this is too much, Link, it's okay to take your time. You've been through a lot, and no one should expect you to make decisions like this without considering what you truly want."
Her words offered a brief reprieve, and Link gave her a small nod of gratitude. Still, the magnitude of what was being proposed weighed heavily on him. The dinner continued, but the conversation lingered in Link's mind, the implications of Byakuya's words setting the stage for decisions he knew would shape his future in Soul Society.
As the conversation shifted to lighter topics, Byakuya asked a curious question. "Hero Link, do you possess any musical talents? It is said that art and music reflect the soul of their performer. I am curious if you've mastered any instruments."
Link smiled softly at the question, nodding. "Back in my world, I played the ocarina. It's a simple instrument, but it's brought me comfort and strength during difficult times."
Rukia tilted her head, intrigued. "An ocarina? I've never seen one before. Would you play something for us?"
Link reached into his satchel, producing the blue ocarina he always kept close. "I'd be happy to. This piece is called the Serenade of Water. It's… calming, and it reminds me of peaceful times."
He began to play, the haunting melody filling the room with tranquility. As the notes danced in the air, Link found himself lost in thought. Byakuya's earlier words lingered, particularly the notion of establishing a noble family. Could he truly find a place for himself here, among the Soul Reapers and their traditions? The idea of multiple wives still unsettled him, but the prospect of belonging—of creating something meaningful—sparked a glimmer of possibility in his heart.
The Serenade of Water flowed into an extended improvisation, the notes soft and soothing. When Link finished, the room fell into a peaceful silence for a moment before Byakuya gave a single nod of approval. "You play with precision and heart. It is a skill worth sharing, should you remain here."
Link glanced at Byakuya. "Thank you. I think… I'd like to meet this member of Squad 0 you mentioned. If they can give me a clearer idea of what working with them might entail, it could help me decide if this is truly where I belong."
Byakuya rose gracefully, his usual composed demeanor intact. "Very well. I will arrange the meeting. I trust you will approach it with the same earnestness you've shown tonight."
He turned toward the door but paused, glancing over his shoulder. His gaze settled briefly on Rukia, who had been watching Link intently throughout the evening. "Rukia, I find myself approving of this man more than certain others you've introduced to me in the past. Renji. Ichigo."
Rukia's face turned crimson as she sputtered, "Brother, that's not—!"
Byakuya smirked faintly, the ghost of mischief lighting his eyes. "I will leave you both to enjoy the rest of the evening. Rukia spent considerable time planning this dinner. Ensure her efforts were not wasted."
With that, he exited the room, his subtle smirk leaving Rukia flustered. She stared at the door for a moment before turning back to Link, her expression softening.
"I'm sorry about him. He has… his own way of showing approval," she muttered, still slightly embarrassed.
Link chuckled. "It's fine. I think I understand. And, for what it's worth, this dinner has been wonderful. Thank you for putting it together."
Rukia relaxed, her earlier embarrassment fading into a shy smile. The two spent the rest of the evening in quiet conversation, the atmosphere lighter now as Link felt himself growing closer to the people around him—and to a decision about where his future might lie.
