Chapter 2: The Droid with Secrets
The journey back to the Lars homestead was quiet, save for the hum of the speeder and the occasional gust of wind whipping across the sands. Aria leaned back in her seat, her sharp eyes scanning the horizon as if memorizing every dune and landmark. Luke stole a glance at her, wondering what her story was but unsure how to ask.
"So," Aria finally broke the silence, "this droid of yours. What's the problem?"
Luke hesitated. "It's an older model—R2 unit. Keeps glitching when it tries to interface with the vaporators. Uncle Owen thinks it's just worn out, but I… I think there's something more."
Aria nodded thoughtfully. "R2 units are tricky, but they're tough. Sounds like a challenge."
When they arrived at the homestead, the suns had almost disappeared below the horizon, leaving a faint glow in their wake. Luke led Aria to the workshop where the blue-and-white R2 unit sat, its dome swiveling nervously at the sight of a stranger.
"This is R2-D2," Luke said, patting the droid affectionately. "He's been acting up for weeks."
Aria crouched beside the droid, her hands deftly examining its panels. "Hey there, buddy," she murmured. "Let's see what's going on with you."
R2-D2 emitted a series of beeps and whistles, and Aria's smirk returned. "Oh, you've got a lot to say, don't you?" She pulled a small diagnostic tool from her belt and connected it to the droid. Her brow furrowed as she studied the readout.
"Huh," she muttered. "This isn't just a glitch. Someone's been messing with his programming."
Luke's eyes widened. "What? Who would do that?"
"Good question," Aria said, standing up and dusting off her hands. "Looks like it's designed to hide certain files. Might take me a while to crack it, but I can't do it here. Too risky."
"Risky?" Luke echoed. "Why?"
Aria glanced around the workshop, her expression serious. "Because whoever did this didn't want it to be found. And if we dig too deep, we might attract the wrong kind of attention."
Luke's stomach churned. He'd always dreamed of adventure, but this felt… different. Real. Dangerous. Still, he couldn't back down now.
"What do we do?" he asked.
Aria's smirk returned, a hint of excitement flashing in her eyes. "We find out what R2's hiding. But first, we're gonna need some tools and a place where no one will bother us. You up for a little trip, farm boy?"
Luke nodded, determination solidifying in his chest. "I'm in."
As the stars began to light up the night sky, Luke knew one thing for certain: life on Tatooine was about to change, and this time, he wouldn't let it slip through his fingers.
