It's 2024 - f*ck it. Elite Force Season 2. After rewatching the franchise, this is - in my semi-expert opinion - where I believe the showrunners were going with Elite Force following 'The Attack'. 1 Chapter is 1 episode, 20-minute sitcom style, just as the style of the show; written in screenplay format. Ep 19 is up now - The Force, and Douglas, get competitive over a games' night!

ELITE FORCE: Season 2 Episode 8

"I Ain't Afraid Of No Ghost"

It's Halloween! And the Elite Force are called on a mission to a Haunted Mansion. But is there really a ghost? Or there something more sinister than the supernatural afoot... Chase is sure it's an electromagnetic pulse, Bree certain that it's hearsay. With Oliver trembling at the very thought of the supernatural, and Skylar and Kaz sure that they are the next big ghost whisperers in town, will they be able to survive the night?

FADE IN.

SCENE ONE.
EXT. HAUNTED MANSION - NIGHT.
(It's Halloween night. In a suburban neighbourhood, children are trick-or-treating, jack o lanterns and pumpkins lining every front yard. However, on the end of the street is a large mansion, looming ominously over the rest of the houses. A group of young teenagers push each other up the path, trick-or-treating bags in hand. One of them knocks).

KID 1
Trick-or-treat!

(Footsteps sound in side, as if someone is walking to the door. The children look at each other, a little creeped out. KID 2 reaches to knock again, but the door just creaks slowly open. It reveals the foyer of a mansion, but there are only shadows. There's no one there).

KID 3
(Nervously)
Hello?

(Somewhere further into the house, lights flicker inside. There is a smash, and a scream. Suddenly a white apparition of a little girl flickers into appearance in the threshold. The ghost gives a haunted shriek. The KIDS all scream. The door slams shut with a strong wind and the KIDS run down the path).

KID 1
Ghost! There's a ghost!

KID 2
Run for your lives!

KID 3
What do we do? Should we call someone?

KID 1
Who are we gonna call?

CUT TO:
SCENE TWO.
EXT. HAUNTED MANSION - NIGHT.
(Clad in their mission suits, staring up at the house, CHASE, BREE, SKYLAR, KAZ and OLIVER stand in a line. BREE is holding a mission bag, CHASE looks skeptical, SKYLAR looks determined, KAZ looks wary, and OLIVER looks absolutely terrified).

CHASE
(Grumpy)
This is ridiculous.

KAZ
Come on, dude, it's Halloween. Live a little.

ROLL TITLES

SCENE THREE.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.
(The main foyer of the house turns left into an empty living room. A derelict fireplace sits on one wall, frayed curtains blowing in the breeze by a smashed window. There is no furniture, just cobwebs and shadows, and the Elite Force walk in, their footsteps echoing).

SKYLAR
This room looks good - we can use it as a temporary mission command whilst we explore the rest of the house.

OLIVER
(Nearly whimpering)
Are we sure there's no ghosts in here?

CHASE
There are no ghosts anywhere. Ghosts don't exist.

KAZ
Dude! Ssh, they'll hear you!

CHASE
(Sarcastically)
Oh no, I wouldn't want the spiders to hear me! What will I do?

OLIVER
Spiders and ghosts? This is the worst mission ever!

BREE
Would you all calm down! You're just freaking yourselves out for no reason.

SKYLAR
And because the unexplained activity in this house includes: (She reads off the tablet in her hands) Doors slamming, voices in the night, footsteps in rooms where no one's walking, lights flickering -

BREE
Which could be a number of things…

SKYLAR
(Continuing)
- Knives flying in the air, blood pouring through walls, strong winds out of nowhere, and the white apparition of a screaming little girl.

BREE
(Awkwardly)
Okay, so there's a chance it's a ghost.

OLIVER
(Sliding down a wall)
We're going to die.

CHASE
No one is going to die. Hundreds of years of ghost sightings can be easily explained away with science. The reason that this house has had a lot of "suspicious" activity is because there's probably an electromagnetic pulse coming from a source somewhere in the house. That's why we're here, because the EMP is dangerous, not the pretend ghosts. You're all overreacting.

(CHASE unpacks what looks like a tinfoil neck pillow out from the mission bag. He promptly shoves it around BREE's neck).

BREE
(Disgusted)
And I'm overreacting? What are you doing, nerd?

SKYLAR
You better not start spouting alien conspiracy nonsense.

CHASE
Please, I'm still not completely convinced aliens exist either. (SKYLAR glares at him). No, this is a precaution. Our bionic chips will get fried if an EMP signal interrupts them - it happened once in Mission Creek and it was a disaster. I was temporarily blinded and Bree lost control of her speed and ended up in the desert! This will block the signal.

(He picks up another tinfoil neck brace from the mission bag and puts it on himself. BREE rolls her eyes, takes hers off, and throws it across the room).

BREE
There's no EMP, there's no ghost, there's no nothing. We're here as a precaution because the couple that lived in this house watched a horror movie and freaked out. (Sighs) And I regretfully had no other Halloween plans.

KAZ
You non-believers don't know what's coming. I've seen ghosts before, we've got to concentrate.

SKYLAR
I'm with you, Kaz. Undead spirits deserve respect. Something's clearly wrong, so we should help them out.

OLIVER
(Hopefully)
Or we could pretend nothing's wrong and go home?

BREE
Nothing is wrong. Come on, if we leave now we can catch a movie.

(BREE and OLIVER make to leave the room. CHASE pulls BREE back forcefully by her arm and puts the tinfoil around her neck again).

CHASE
We're all staying, because we all need to be here for missions, and when we find the source of the EMP, you need to wear your gear.

BREE
Chase, I'm not wearing your lame bionic training wheels.

CHASE
I haven't even got to the training wheels, missy, and whilst I'm at it - (He reaches into the bag and pulls out various items, handing them to her) Here's knee and elbow pads for when your superspeed goes berserk and you crash, and tie this reflective belt around your waist in case you turn invisible so we know where you are, and -

BREE
Oh, whatever, Mom.

CHASE
(Smugly)
I will take that as a compliment. Mothers are the backbones of society.

(BREE glares at him and rolls her eyes).

SKYLAR
We should get a jumpstart on scouting the place. It's Halloween, so the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest. If we stake out the house, we're bound to see or hear something.

KAZ
Good idea, I'm coming with you. I've seen and heard a bunch of ghosts, I basically have "the gift". You guys coming?

(KAZ and SKYLAR, making to leave the living room, turn back expectantly to the others. OLIVER, jumpy, looks over his shoulder).

OLIVER
(Swallows)
Do we... have to? I mean, we could just stay in this one room, safely, together.

CHASE
(Scoffs)
You guys have fun wasting your time on your ghost hunt. Bree and I will stay here and set up the signal trackers to find the locations of the EMP before they -

BREE
I'm coming with you.

(BREE eagerly takes off the dumb safety features CHASE has given her, and follows KAZ and SKYLAR. CHASE expertly dodges in front of her, blocking her exit).

CHASE
Ah, ah, ah - hang on.

BREE
(Folding her arms)
What now?

CHASE
If you're going to go off into the house, you should take this rope and tie it round your wrist. I'll tether the other end to this anchor weight.

KAZ
Anchor weight? No wonder that mission bag was so heavy.

BREE
(Unimpressed)
You want to put me on a leash? Seriously, Chase?

CHASE
It's a safety precaution!

BREE
Having a 24/7 telepathic communication wasn't enough for you, you want to be physically attached as well?

CHASE
I don't want to be, but if you're going to insist on walking around an un-navigated mansion where an EMP source could be hiding anywhere…

BREE
(Scowls)
Fine. I'll stay in here. (She reluctantly takes one of the signal boxes from CHASE and starts working on it, grumbling) Some sisters only have to see their brothers on holidays.

SKYLAR
Suit yourself, you three.

KAZ
See ya!

(KAZ and SKYLAR go off into the rest of the house. OLIVER looks after them. CHASE slowly tries to reach behind BREE with the tinfoil and put it on her neck again).

OLIVER
We're never going to see them again, are we?

BREE
(Batting him away)
Chase! I swear.

SCENE FOUR.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT.
(SKYLAR and KAZ stalk along a dark corridor, the floorboards creaking from underneath them. KAZ holds a flashlight in one hand, SKYLAR's eyes darting around the room).

KAZ
This is so creepy.

SKYLAR
I know right. You scared?

KAZ
(Scoffs)
No.

(SKYLAR, to prove him wrong, taps on the wall where KAZ cannot see. KAZ jump and swings the flashlight round only to find SKYLAR is the source of the noise. SKYLAR laughs; KAZ glares, embarrassed).

KAZ
Rude.

(The reach a door in the corridor that's slightly ajar, and SKYLAR and KAZ share a look, nodding. SKYLAR pushes the door open slowly, and they creep into the room. We follow them, and KAZ's flashlight pans the room. Unlike the rest of the house, this one is furnished. There is a small bed with vintage pink and white sheets, an old dresser, and a doll lying on the floor in the centre of the room. It looks frozen in time, completely abandoned).

SKYLAR
Woah…

KAZ
Speaking of creepy.

(SKYLAR lowers into a crouch to pick up and inspect the doll on the floor. KAZ gasps and stops her).

KAZ
What are you doing? You can't move anything, it's sacred ground! You'll wake the ghost!

SKYLAR
Good catch! (She stands up) This all just looks so still. It's like there could still be a little girl living here.

KAZ
I think the whole point is that there is. You said the apparitions were of a little girl, right?

SKYLAR
Yeah… (She is staring at something in the shadows) Hey Kaz, can you point your flashlight over here?

(KAZ points the flashlight and, in decorative floral writing on the wall is a little girls' name: Rosie).

SKYLAR
Rosie… that must have been her name.

KAZ
Why is the whole house completely abandoned except for this room?

SKYLAR
I don't know…

(Outside in the hallway, KAZ and SKYLAR are sure they hear footsteps. Quiet at first, and then louder, louder, louder).

SKYLAR
(Suddenly fearful)
But something tells me we're about to find out.

SCENE FIVE.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.
(CHASE is busy setting up tablets and scanners, OLIVER staring outside through the curtain. BREE is leaning against the wall; she looks bored as anything. CHASE is wearing his tinfoil gear and BREE has long since discarded hers. Suddenly, a scanner beeps).

OLIVER
(Jumping)
Oh my gosh, what's that? Are there ghosts? Ghouls? Demons? What is it, I can take it, just tell me.

CHASE
(Deadpan)
That's the "on" button.

OLIVER
(Breaths relief)
Oh, that's good. I couldn't have taken it if it was ghosts.

CHASE
All the devices up and running and they're not detecting anything yet… maybe they just need a minute. Or it could come in waves. We should have sent one with Kaz and Skylar.

BREE
(Hopeful)
I'll take it to them!

CHASE
We should move in groups. If one of us goes haywire -

BREE
We're not going to go haywire! Would you just chill?

CHASE
I'm perfectly chill! But if you think it's not enough, I'd be more chill if you'd do as I asked.

BREE
You're not my mission leader anymore, and I'm not going to look like a baked potato for the whole night.

OLIVER
Guys, my parents are divorced, and I'm already on edge. Please stop arguing, I can't take it.

BREE
No problem, Oliver. It's an easy fix. (She snatches the device from CHASE's hand) I'm going to find Kaz and Skylar.

CHASE
Bree, that's totally irresponsible. I'm just trying to be smart -

BREE
Well get what, genius, superspeed trumps smarts any day.

(BREE superspeeds away in a blur. CHASE groans, grumbling. OLIVER sighs).

OLIVER
I'm just grateful she didn't ask me to choose between you two.

SCENE SIX.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT.
(SKYLAR and KAZ, nervous, follow the sound of creaking steps out from Rosie's Bedroom into the main hallway. KAZ pans his flashlight, but sees nothing. The footsteps seem to come from another end of the corridor, so KAZ and SKYLAR look at each other. SKYLAR puts a finger to her lips, KAZ nods, and they head of together down the corridor.

Suddenly there is a flash of light, flickering, purplish-white light from under the door of one room. KAZ and SKYLAR widen their eyes. KAZ pushes SKYLAR in front of him and she snaps back, whacking his arm. She mouths "Dude?!" and KAZ shrugs his apology.

The light gets brighter and the footsteps get louder as whatever is behind the door walks closer to the door handle. The door opens slowly. KAZ and SKYLAR yell their fright and KAZ fires a fireball blindly.

The door opens fully, revealing BREE, the purple-ish white light being from her flashlight hands power so she could see. BREE ducks the fireball and stands up straight, looking incredulous at KAZ and SKYLAR).

BREE
Kaz?

KAZ
Bree?

BREE
Skylar?

SKYLAR
(Pointedly)
Bree!

KAZ
We thought you were a ghost!

BREE
Not the last time I checked.

SKYLAR
What are you doing up here?

KAZ
(Teasing)
Yeah, and look at you without your leash like a big girl.

BREE
(Glaring)
I had to get away from Chase. I was just exploring this creepy mansion looking for you. Find anything "ghosty" yet? (She laughs).

SKYLAR
Actually, yeah.

BREE
(Eyes lighting up)
No way.

KAZ
Yes way. Creepy little girl's room - (he points) eight o' clock.

BREE
Cool! I want to see! (SKYLAR and KAZ give her a strange look) What? I didn't get out much as a kid.

SCENE SEVEN.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - ROSIE'S ROOM - NIGHT.
(BREE, awed and enjoying herself, walks into the room, using her flashlight hands with her right hand to see. She is closely followed by a very cautious SKYLAR and KAZ).

BREE
Woah… creepy. Cool! (She sees the pink and white bed) Man, I always wanted a bed like that. (Scoffs) Don't know what the problem is - kid's livin' the dream.

(BREE, walking towards the dresser, accidentally kicks the doll in the centre of the room, tripping over it and moving it. KAZ and SKYLAR see the doll has moved and widen their eyes, freaking out).

KAZ
What did you just do?

BREE
(Oblivious)
What?

(Somewhere in the house, footsteps sound again. This time, rather than the creaking before, they are more clicky, tapping, like school-girl's shoes).

SKYLAR
Oh my gosh, you woke the ghost up!

BREE
Oh, relax, it'll just be Chase and Oliver.

ROSIE'S VOICE
(Echoey, distant and quiet, singing)
Ring-a-ring-a-Rosie, A pocket full of posy.

BREE
(Now growing scared)
Well… Chase does sound like a little girl, so… it still might be him?

SKYLAR
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, it's really her!

ROSIE'S VOICE
(Echoey, distant and quiet, singing)
A tissue, a tissue…

SKYLAR
Where's it coming from?

KAZ
If that's really Rosie, we should follow it.

BREE (V/O)
(Telepathically)
Pineapple, barnyard, kangaroo…. Chase, if that's you, it's not funny.

CHASE (V/O)
If what's not me? What are you talking about? What's going on?

ROSIE'S VOICE
(Echoey, distant and quiet, singing)
All fall down.

BREE (V/O)
Uh…. never mind! All good! Bye!

BREE
Follow that pint sized demon!

(SKYLAR, KAZ and BREE run out into the hallway as somewhere in the house, Rosie giggles, scarpering down into the shadows).

SCENE EIGHT.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - DOWNSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT).
(SKYLAR, KAZ and BREE skid to a halt in a dusty downstairs corridor. They look around, as if whatever they had followed has quietened. A small door, leading down to the basement, is to their left).

SKYLAR
The singing stopped!

KAZ
Thank goodness for that. She was pitchy.

BREE
That's a little harsh, she's a kid.

KAZ
She's undead!

BREE
Which is all the more impressive that she's singing.

(ROSIE giggles somewhere).

BREE
(Smugly)
See, she likes me.

KAZ
(Looking around)
Where's that coming from?

ROSIE'S VOICE
(From the basement door)
Ring-a-ring-a-Rosie…

(KAZ opens the door and shines his flashlight, revealing some thin, rickety stairs leading down into darkness).

KAZ
(Scared)
Aw, man, creepy staircase!

SKYLAR
Where are Chase and Oliver? You'd think they'd hear this too! Bree, can you use your telepathy trick to call them?

BREE
(Scoffs)
No way. Chase'll make me wear a bicycle helmet. (Rubbing her hands together in excitement) Come on, creepy stairs time!

(BREE, using her flashlight hand to guide herself, excitedly starts forward down the steps. KAZ grabs her arm and pulls her back).

KAZ
Woah, woah, woah! What are you doing?

BREE
(Displeased)
Oh, Kaz, come on, not you too!

KAZ
Have you not seen any horror movie ever made? The first person who goes down to the basement always dies first! (Pause, he turns to SKYLAR) After you.

(SKYLAR gives KAZ a black look).

SKYLAR
Let's all go together.

SCENE NINE.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - BASEMENT - NIGHT.
(Guided by BREE's flashlight hands and KAZ's torch, SKYLAR, KAZ and BREE slowly make their way down the creaking stairs into the basement. ROSIE giggles somewhere close, it's clearer now, crisper, and all three of them look more afraid).

KAZ
(Whispering, like calling a dog)
Here ghosty, ghosty, ghosty… come out, come out, wherever you are.

BREE
Do we want her to come out? What's the plan if we actually catch this thing?

SKYLAR
(Realising they have none)
Oh… good point.

(We follow KAZ, BREE and SKLAR looking around the basement. It is low-ceilinged with cobweb covered beams. The walls and floor are made of stone, damp in places, with no sign of any storage at all on the floor. It is completely blank).

KAZ
(Trembling slightly)
There's no one here… maybe… it is an EMP after all. Maybe Chase was right.

BREE
(Staring into the corner)
Uh… no, it's not an EMP.

KAZ
Oh, can you tell through your chip?

BREE
(Swallowing)
Nope…

(BREE points, and in the corner of the room, a white apparition starts to form, with black wisps surrounding it as it appears. It shows a little girl, and she is staring, demented, grinning at KAZ, BREE and SKYLAR).

ROSIE
(Singing)
All fall down. All fall down.

(KAZ, BREE and SKYLAR scream).

ROSIE
(Sweet innocent voice)
You know what happened to my family?

(KAZ, BREE and SKYLAR scream again, and this time they run, bolting up the stairs. SKYLAR tries first, but KAZ pushes her out of the way and runs. But SKYLAR and BREE superspeed past him, leaving him on his own).

KAZ
Darn my normal speed legs!

(KAZ bolts upstairs, slamming the door shut behind him).

MIDWAY BREAK.

SCENE TEN.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.
(CHASE and OLIVER are sat cross-legged on the floor, monitoring the scanners).

CHASE
I don't know if Bree is just messing with me, but they might have found something.

OLIVER
Nothing's showing up on the scanners… you really think it's an EMP?

CHASE
It's the most logical solution. But if it's not an EMP, there are plenty of other explanations. Draughts, squatters, heck - even a gas leak. There have been examples of supposed hauntings really being the result of hallucinogenic gas. Fascinating, really.

OLIVER
Hallucinogenic? Like, seeing things?

CHASE
Uh-huh, if there's an excess of hydrogen, or nitrogen, for example. There are tons of chemicals that could cause it.

(There is suddenly a beep on one of the devices; CHASE inspects it).

CHASE
Huh… that's odd.

OLIVER
What is?

(CHASE stands, clutching the scanner).

CHASE
There's a spike in the atmosphere somewhere in the house.

OLIVER
(Also rising to his feet)
The toxic gas thing you were just talking about?

(CHASE nods his head, confusion melting a little into concern as there is a sudden yell off screen. BREE, KAZ and SKYLAR run in, screaming. They're all talking at once).

BREE
Ghost! -

KAZ
- It's a little girl -

SKYLAR
- Rosie -

KAZ
- Singing really off-key -

BREE
- Not an EMP -

CHASE
Calm down! Okay, everyone take a breath. (Pause) Wait… (He checks his gas readings) Okay, yes, definitely safe to take a breath. What happened?

BREE
(Urgently)
Chase, they were right. There really is a ghost. I saw it with my own eyes! You didn't hear it?

CHASE
No way…

OLIVER
(Eyes wide)
Did it by any chance tell you its plans for who among the five of us it wanted to kill?

SKYLAR
Come on, Chase. If it was an EMP, Bree's chip would be fried. Nothing else would show us a flickering little girl singing at us and asking where her family is!

CHASE
Okay, fine, so it's not an EMP. The gas readings for the basement just went off the charts a second ago. If you come with me, I'll prove to you all there's a gas leak in the basement, making the three of you hallucinate.

KAZ
Okay, well can we at least please send Skylar first this time!

(SKYLAR punches KAZ's arm).

CHASE
(Rolling his eyes)
I will go first, and you'll all see there is a rational, scientific, logical -

CUT TO:
SCENE ELEVEN
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - BASEMENT - NIGHT.
(All five of them, CHASE, SKYLAR, BREE, OLIVER and KAZ are stood in the basement, CHASE holding his gas level reader. He looks confused).

CHASE
(Matter-of-factly)
Okay, I have no explanation for this.

KAZ
We told you!

CHASE
Just because there are no gas leaks, doesn't mean it's a ghost. What you saw was probably just a fluke.

OLIVER
Then what was the spike in the atmosphere?

CHASE
(Confused)
Natural gas… completely harmless. Like something just… I don't know…

SKYLAR
(Smugly)
Appeared and then disappeared?

CHASE
(Glaring)
No! (A pause) …maybe.

(It starts up again, the footsteps above them).

ROSIE'S VOICE
(Singing)
Ring-a-ring-a-Rosie…

BREE
That's her!

KAZ
Off-pitch, right? You see what I mean?

CHASE
Okay, so… not ideal, I'll admit that. But it's probably someone trespassing in the house.

SKYLAR
Yeah! The ghost!

CHASE
It's not a ghost!

(ROSIE suddenly flickers into existence in front of CHASE, black wisps surrounding her white, ghostly form),

ROSIE
I am too a ghost!

CHASE
(Paling)
Huh… well then I guess I stand corrected.

OLIVER
(Nearly hyperventilating)
Oh my gosh…

(OLIVER faints onto the floor).

ROSIE
(Dementedly smiling)
All fall down, all fall down.

SKYLAR
(Looking skyward)
Guy's a superhero…

BREE
Uh-huh, and now he's super unconscious.

ROSIE
You know what happened to my family?

CHASE
(Forcing a smile)
Uh… no, no, we don't, kid.

(ROSIE disappears and reappears close to KAZ. Like always, black wisps surround her ghostly form as she does).

ROSIE
(Singing softly)
Ring-a-ring-a-Rosie…

KAZ
Why me?

(ROSIE disappears and reappears again by BREE, the black wisps once again).

BREE
(Jumping out of her skin)
Oh… hello, creepy little child, you.

ROSIE
You're nice… you know what happened to my family?

BREE
Nope…

ROSIE
(Singing)
I miss you, I miss you, we all fall down.

BREE
Wait… what did you say?

ROSIE
(Singing)
I miss you, I miss you.

CHASE
Bree, what's the problem?

BREE
Those aren't the lyrics. It's "a tissue, a tissue", not "I miss you, I miss you"...

(ROSIE disappears and reappears the other side of BREE, black wisps again).

SKYLAR
(Working something out)
Wait, hang on…

ROSIE
(Singing)
I miss you, I miss you… (Speaking) I miss you, Bree.

BREE
(Freaked out)
Oh gosh why does it know my name!

SKYLAR
Those black wisps…

ROSIE
(No longer asking)
You know what happened to my family.

(CHASE notices that there is light that shines through the boards above them, that sits on ROSIE's body, rather than passing straight through her. He zeroes in on the black wisps, recognising them from a certain swarm. He narrows his eyes).

CHASE
(Looking at SKYLAR, nodding)
You're right.

KAZ
Who's right, what's going on?

CHASE
(Knowingly)
She's…

(BREE, with another plan, swiftly swoops in, interrupting him).

BREE
Chase! Just… quick! Run!

CHASE
(Narrowing his eyes)
Huh?

(SKYLAR grabs KAZ and BREE grabs CHASE and OLIVER and they make a break for it, ROSIE disappearing and giggling in the background).

SCENE TWELVE.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.
(BREE unceremoniously dumps OLIVER onto the ground, which wakes him up with a groan. SKYLAR slams the door shut, barricading it with the anchor weight from before).

CHASE
We're all thinking the same thing, right?

KAZ
(Confused)
Uh-huh! Yes! We are all thinking the same thing… but for, um… Oliver's sake... what are we thinking again?

CHASE, SKYLAR, BREE
Rodissius.

OLIVER
What? How?

SKYLAR
Rosie's another one of Rodissius' kids. It's subtle, but she has black wisps whenever she moves somewhere - I've only ever seen that on their swarm, not ghosts.

CHASE
Yeah, and since ghosts don't exist, this is a perfectly rational explanation. Besides, when she got closer, light didn't pass through her like it would an apparition. She's human, not a spirit.

BREE
She must have been shapeshifting into shadows and then into the little girl, to give the illusion she was just disappearing and reappearing.

SKYLAR
Uh-huh, and that thing she keeps saying. "You know what happened to my family". Guys, she's not asking, she's saying we know. Because, you know, we put like a third of her family behind bars? This was bait. This whole thing was bait.

BREE
And she was telling me "I miss you" because they tried to make me a part of their family when they kidnapped me. Plus, Rosie, with an 'R'. Ugh, I'm kicking myself, why didn't I see it before?

CHASE
(Bitterly)
Maybe because you were too busy ignoring my -

BREE
If the next words out of your mouth are "safety" or "precautions", I will feed you to the not-ghost.

OLIVER
Okay, okay. Well, we can get her, right? We need a plan.

(Complete silence).

OLIVER
Does… anyone have a plan?

CHASE
We have to be careful…

KAZ
(All in one breath)
Yeah. Right now, she thinks we think she's a ghost but she doesn't know we know she's not but if she knows we know then she'll know we'll think to capture her and we'll think it's easy because she doesn't know… I think.

SKYLAR
Kaz is right… I'm 80% sure. We have to let her keep thinking we're none the wiser. If we can get close enough, Oliver can cryoblast her, but she'll disappear if she knows she's busted.

BREE
Alright… time for some good old fashioned improv. Kaz?

KAZ
Best mission ever!

OLIVER
(Trembling)
So… we're sure there's no ghosts?

CHASE
Yes!

BREE
I don't know.

SKYLAR
We can never be sure.

CHASE
(Rolling his eyes, snapping)
Oh, would you all just - come on!

SCENE THIRTEEN.
INT. HAUNTED MANSION - MAIN FOYER - NIGHT.
(OLIVER and SKYLAR are on the stairs, OLIVER clinging on to her for dear life - actually terrified. BREE is covering the exit from the basement, using a flashlight hand, pretending to search, and KAZ and CHASE are covering the middle of the room, standing as bait. KAZ, delighted, has his hands on his hips, in his element).

KAZ
(Melodramatically, poorly acting)
How terrible this mission is turning out to be! We, just mere mortals, can never be expected to face a ghost. How afraid we all are!

CHASE
(Deadpan and stilted, not trying)
This is bad. I am scared.

KAZ
(Whispering)
Come on, dude! "Yes and" me, you're worse than Bree.

BREE
Yes and do we know when this "ghost" is going to turn up?

KAZ
(Proudly)
Yes and… (thinking, he realises he doesn't know) also no.

(Somewhere in the house, ROSIE giggles).

OLIVER
I know it's just… you know… but it's so creepy!

(ROSIE suddenly apparates into the centre of the room. Now that SKYLAR, CHASE and BREE have pointed it out, it's obvious she isn't really a ghost. The ghostly-pale is makeup, light doesn't pass through her, and the black wisps are prominent. The Force all share a look. BREE steps forwards).

BREE
Hey… Rosie.

ROSIE
You know what happened to my family?

BREE
(Lying)
Nope. You've been scaring a lot of people, right?

ROSIE
(Singing)
Ring-a-ring-a-Rosie.

CHASE
(Attempting small talk, not getting the improv thing)
So… you're a… ghost. (Awkwardly) What's that like?

(KAZ elbows CHASE at his tone).

ROSIE
All fall down… all fall down…

SKYLAR
If you insist.

(SKYLAR, using her electroblast, fires a ball of pink energy directly into ROSIE. Instead of it passing through her, it sends her hurtling backwards into the wall. She collapses to the ground).

CHASE
Skylar! What the heck, that's a little kid!

SKYLAR
(Scoffing)
No it's not! (She pauses) Is it?

ROSIE
(Whimpering on the floor)
Owie, I'm telling my Dad on you!

(BREE starts forwards to help her, but KAZ glares).

KAZ
She's a shapeshifter! Don't fall for it! Oliver, use your cryoblast!

(OLIVER quickly uses his cryoblast, entrapping ROSIE in a casing of ice. ROSIE, ironically frozen with a ghostly scream, is finally defeated. SKYLAR, OLIVER, BREE, CHASE and KAZ all approach her. CHASE scans her with his bionic eye).

CHASE
(Sighing awkwardly)
Well, that's her original form. She's actually a ten-year-old kid.

BREE
Oh…

(SKYLAR grimaces).

OLIVER
Yikes.

KAZ
(Laughing)
Skylar beat up a little girl.

SKYLAR
(Defensively)
Yeah, well, you screamed at the little girl.

KAZ
We all screamed at the little girl! She's creepy!

(All five of them nod their heads in agreement, CHASE shuddering for good measure).

OLIVER
(Desperately)
Can we please go home now?

SCENE FOURTEEN.
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT.
(BREE, KAZ, OLIVER, and SKYLAR are hanging out in the living room, drinking hot cocoa. ROSIE, still frozen, is stood behind them in the living room).

BREE
What are we going to do with her? We can't keep her.

KAZ
Mighty Max has a juvie, she'll be fine. Soon as she's cleared for not being Rodissius-level evil, they'll send her to live with Raine in Pennsylvania.

SKYLAR
I can't believe Roman and Riker are using kids.

OLIVER
To be fair, their other adult siblings are dropping like flies when we capture them. How many are we up to now?

KAZ
(Counts on his hand, muttering)
Raine, Reece, Rory, Rosie… (To the others) Four down, nine to go!

OLIVER
(Unbelieving)
It's only been four?!

SKYLAR
Five if you include Rodissius!

KAZ
Okay, then five down, nine to go.

BREE
We're not half bad at this, are we?

(BREE and KAZ clink their mugs; SKYLAR smirks).

SKYLAR
Yeah, and it's much easier without Chase's elbow pads and helmets… (She looks around) Where is that bionic ball of stress anyway?

KAZ
Probably packing away his EMP Emergency Protection kit in Mission Command. (Laughs) Man, I would not want to be bionic around him.

BREE
Trust me, it's no picnic.

OLIVER
You know… we could have a little fun with this. It is Halloween, after all, and we spent the whole night playing Ghostbusters and none of it doing our annual pranks.

BREE
Oh, I'm so in.

OLIVER
Here - cyberloak. Catch.

(OLIVER reaches into a drawer and tosses a cybercloak to BREE. BREE uses her bionics to turn invisible).

OLIVER
(Through the PA system)
Chase! Get up here! It's an emergency!

CHASE (V/O)
(Through the PA)
On my way!

(A second later, CHASE appears in the hyperlift and runs forwards).

CHASE
What? What's going on?

(BREE, using her invisibility, reappears directly in front of CHASE, but using the cybercloak, she appears to look exactly like ROSIE. CHASE looks at her, looks at the real ROSIE in a block of ice, then back to BREE (ROSIE)).

CHASE
But you're… but you didn't have black wisps… ghosts aren't…

SKYLAR
(Feigning innocence)
Who are you talking to, Chase?

KAZ
(Following SKYLAR's lead)
Yeah, there's nothing there?

BREE (ROSIE)
(Singing)
Ring-a-ring-a-Rosie…

(CHASE screams and runs backwards into the hyperlift).

CHASE
Ghosts are real! They are real!

(CHASE disappears down to mission command and BREE switches back to herself using the cybercloak. KAZ, OLIVER, SKYLAR and BREE fall about laughing, BREE and KAZ high-fiving triumphantly).

BREE
(Smug)
Happy Halloween to me.
