Chapter 1-?

Please don't toy with me, Nagatoro-Senpai...

His footsteps echoed throughout the halls, slow and steady, gaze hidden behind his glasses. School had ended a short while ago, but he wasn't quite ready to go home yet.

The library was on the third floor, and it had been a place of sanctuary in the past, and he hoped it would be the case here and now. He smiled a gentle look at his fellow classmates he passed in the halls, the curse of being the new kid meaning that everyone wanted to get to know you, personal space be damned.

It didn't bother him all that much, he actually secretly enjoyed the added attention, even though he wouldn't seek it. He just hoped that it would last, for it certainly outstayed its welcome in the other schools.

He'd just left the last stairwell behind, the empty halls of the third floor bringing him that flash of relief as he melted into the silence.

His first day had gone well, all things considered. But he'd been distracted, and with the ring of the final bell, he knew he had to do a little catching up on his homework before returning home for the night. He didn't have much left to do, a quiet thirty minutes would be all he needed to finish his work for the day.

He gripped the straps of his bag a little tighter, reaching out to grasp the handle of the door to the school library. His fingers graced the sliding handle, but he paused before opening it, the sounds of girlish laughter echoing from inside.

He debated leaving well enough alone, but decided that it was worth it to try and take his quiet space instead. Hopefully they wouldn't be too much of a distraction…

So he stepped inside, all sound going silent the moment he'd opened the door. He blinked, suddenly uncertain, as he scanned the room. There was a girl sitting at the library desk, and then four more off in the corner.

And they were all looking right at him. His eyes widened slightly, before he offered them a tentative smile. They were dead silent for a long moment, before they went back to chatting as if he didn't exist.

He sighed quietly, slipping into the library before seeking out the farthest corner available to him. He could feel their eyes on the back of his head, but he wasn't sure if they were cold or warm.

He decided it better that he didn't know.

Taking his seat at the far desk, he pulled out his homework and a mechanical pencil. He was locked in now, tuning everything else around him out as he sped through the relatively simple work.

At some point his eyes had decided to betray him, as he found his eyes wandering up to the four girls sitting across the room. For the second time since he'd entered, their eyes all locked, and they'd gone silent.

''I shouldn't be here…''

''I should leave…''

''I should've already left. Yep, definitely the smart thing to do in social situations such as these would be to leave before I end up causing a problem. Or worse yet, sticking around long enough that I find myself inadvertently in a stressful situation that I could've avoided…''

''Oh dear, why haven't I left yet? Why am I still here debating what lead up to this situation?''

''That's okay, just breathe. Just calm down Naoto, don't panic, they probably don't see you. They're all too busy gossiping with each other. But I suppose that's what popular girls do in general, at least from my experience.''

''I just wished they'd be nicer about it, there's no need to chew out some guy for trying to be nice to them…''

''I mean, they are all very pretty I suppose. I guess I can understand why they're so popular in school.''

''Oh crap, why am I looking over there? They're going to see me for sure! I should just focus on my homework, just keep your head down, and all your problems will go away…''

''Not that I'm trying to insinuate that they're problems or anything w-wrong like that, t-t-that'd be super rude and disrespectful! Good going dude, now they'll probably think you're rude and a creep… Great job…''

''On the other hand, this will probably give you all the time you need to make up an excuse as to why you'd decided to space out while looking directly their way, instead of… Oh, I don't know, remaining completely out of it as they all decide to stand up and walk over to you.''

''But nooooo! You had to choose now of all times to space out again, didn't you? You moron…''

''Ugh… This is why all those girls in the other school called you a creep, the kind of creepy creep that's completely creepy. The kind of ugly creep who just spaces out while staring uncomfortably at girls in your class, never with unsightly thoughts of course, but who would believe that after seeing you staring at them like that?''

''Like… for instance… right now?''

''Oh…?''

''They're gone now. Huh, I wonder when they got up and left?''

''Probably when they realized that you've been staring at them like a total creep for the last five minutes straight, stuck monologuing inside your head because you can't be bothered to learn how to interact with the people around you…''

''Good going Naoto, you've chased off even more girls because you're too stuck in dreamland…''

''More like my waking nightmare, if I'm being honest…''

He sighed softly, head lowered in disappointment. He'd done it again, finding himself retreating into his mind at the most inappropriate of times, scaring off people that could have been his new friends if he'd played his cards right.

Of course, putting it like that made him sound like an awful person, toying with people to get them to like him. He wasn't like that at all, but the mental analogy he'd cooked up certainly didn't make him seem like a good guy either.

"You've really outdone yourself Naoto. Scaring them off on day one…" He murmured in defeat, deciding that it was at least better that he make some sort of win today and hunker down and finish his homework before heading home. "Maybe next time you space out, it should be at your homework…" He muttered despondently to himself, eyes half lidded as he gazed down at the book on his desk.

He didn't remember, however, that shadow looming over him.

He blinked in surprise, turning to his left once he realized that he was no longer alone.

Or, rather, the girls he'd been staring at earlier had moved while his mind was elsewhere, and were all now crowded around him, arms crossed, frowns marring their lips.

"Creep! Took you long enough to snap out of it."

"What, were you daydreaming about us? Ewe! Do that at home or something!"

"Gross! That sounds even worse! In fact, I don't want to hear anything about us in your daydreams ever, you hear me?!"

The accusatory tone of voice they used when chewing him out was, for all intents and purposes, completely expected considering the circumstances leading to them ganging up on him.

He supposed that he should apologize before they get the wrong idea and report him to the school principal…

He'd already moved two schools in half a year, his mother would be destroyed if he had to move again.

"Well?! Anything you've got to say you creepy creep?" The orange haired girl demanded, eyebrow raised in question.

"Yeah, yeah! Anything to say?!" The cat repeated.

"Or are you like those nerdy types who can't even squeak out a single word when girls like us get too close?" The blonde asked coyly, her eyes seemingly cold.

They'd all ganged up on him, suddenly demanding answers without stop. He gazed up at them, cheeks a light flush as he struggled to articulate a coherent and thoughtful response to their demands.

"Oh. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to stare." He said gently, seemingly unfazed by the harassment. That, or he was level headed enough to keep it entirely out of his voice. Either way, the soft and gentle look his offered them had turned their sputtering anger into something far more manageable. "I get too focused sometimes, I don't even realize what I'm doing. Please, if there is any way I can make it up to you, let me know." He explained lightly, before genuinely offering to repent if it would smooth things over with them.

Perhaps it was exactly what he needed to say, because all that heat that was directed at him suddenly vanished at his genuine, soft spoken remorse at his staring. For, not a few moments later saw the girls muttering some sort of quickly devised excuse to leave the room, mumbling something about, "O-Oh, well thank you, I guess? Well, we got to go anyway, so uh, later…"

He watched them leave the library, lips curling downward in disappointment. He supposed that turning the angry girls meek and off put was a better overall outcome then leaving them yelling at him and calling him a creep, so he supposed that he needed to take his little victories whenever he could.

He sighed, a tiny smile quirking his lips as he thought to do something to get his mind off of the uncomfortable situation. He reached down into his bag, pulling out his sketch pad, quickly flipping through the pages until he found an empty one.

Art pencil already in hand, he decided it time to test himself and draw from memory instead of using a reference.

Only…

He realized rather quickly that he was still not the best at drawing without guidance. If he had something or…

Someone to draw, he could do so much better.

"So… You're a second year, right?"

He sat up a little straighter, having once again thought he was alone. Glancing up, he caught the beautiful eyes of one of the popular girls from before. The girl that had not called him creepy, the girl that had silently judged him while her friends ranted at him, the girl who had suddenly taken a keen interest in him while her friends decided to ditch her.

''She's very pretty, tan skin, probably goes swimming every single day. Wow, her eyes are beautiful, I'd love to be able to paint them on a canvas if she'd let me.''

''She's got her right ear pierced, two matching hair clips holding her bangs back on the right side of her face while her bangs fall down on her left. I wonder how much time she spends in the morning to make herself look so nice?''

''Oh, like you're anyone to talk. You spent thirty minutes this morning making your hair cooperate because you refused to make a bad first impression at the new school.''

''Yeah, and I believe that was time well spent. What if I looked messy and was caught staring at girls, it would be even worse then right now…''

''You mean like how right now you're doing it again to the only girl who is actually giving you the time of day?''

''…''

''Good going, moron…''

"O-Oh, I'm sorry… I've done it again." He flushed lightly, averting his gaze from her wide beautiful smile.

She was smiling.

She was smiling at him, not calling him a creep or yelling at him.

Just smiling, with that playful gleam in her eyes as she looked him up and down like some sort of fresh cut of prime meat at the butcher.

It was a look that made his heart flutter in his chest.

"Wow, you really weren't kidding huh? I could practically read your mind just then, your thoughts were escaping your head." She teased, cheeks warmed underneath his strangely intense gaze. Her head tilted to the side, like a cat sizing up her next meal.

"So, Naoto huh? You're a second year right?" She asked again, this time hoping for a more clear answer.

He was sure to not slip into his mind again, answering her properly. "That's right." He said quietly, voice a gentle wave that made her smile widen just that much more. "I just transferred here from another school."

She seemed to grin harder at his words. "That's so cute." She cooed. "I'm a third year, which means…" She trailed off, leaning across the table, her lips hovering over his ear. His eyes slowly widened, cheeks warming as she moved into his personal space. "-you are my new Kōhai…" She danced along the words, a deep satisfaction filling her as she watched his cheeks warm slightly at her words. Then she laughed, a single playful sound that should've been all the warning that he needed…

But…

He decided that he didn't want to listen to it…

She didn't…

She didn't seem like all those other girls that called him creepy. And for that reason alone, he was going to stay.

"Oh… I suppose it does." He muttered, reaching up to adjust his glasses with a finger. "I guess that makes you my Senpai." He murmured absentmindedly, brushing a stray bang out of his face.

Her voice caught in her throat, cheeks warming underneath his half lidded gaze. Then a grin suddenly broke across her face, glancing down to the art book on his desk. "Whatcha drawing?" She asked curiously, slipping into the seat beside him…

Scooting closer, until their legs were touching.

His eyes widened, blinking at her in surprise before realizing that she'd asked him a question. "Oh… Well right now, nothing…" He murmured, scratching at his cheek absentmindedly. "I wanted to draw, but I don't have anything to reference…" He trailed off, glancing at her from the corner of his eye again.

That knowing grin on her face should've been a warning sign, but he certainly didn't listen. "I can practically read your mind, Kōhai!" She teased, leaning into his personal space. "I bet you want to draw me, huh? Oh Kōhai, you're too obvious!" She giggled, cheeks warming.

"I can picture it now, the image of my body floating in your mind, wearing nothing but a swimsuit! And then, you use your mind hands to peel it away, leaving me entirely-"

His eyes widened, a strangely hopeful look filling his gaze. "You'd be a great model." The words slipped past his lips before he could even dwell on them, his eyes widening in surprise at his own words. "Oh, err, I suppose I said that out loud… Heh." He trailed off, a little genuine smile on his face, eyes scrunched up nervously.

He missed the way her cheeks warmed at his words, her teasing dropping momentarily as she repeated the words in her head.

"Here, I don't know if you'd be interested, but I paint too." He said, pulling out his phone. Quickly scrolling through it, he found the images app, handing it off to her. "I usually paint backgrounds from my bedroom window, so I guess they all look pretty similar. I really want to paint from the art room upstairs here, but I haven't done so yet." He trailed off, sitting there quietly as she tentatively took the phone from his fingers.

"Y-You're giving me your phone? Isn't that against the guy code or something like that?" She teased, quickly getting back into her groove, cheeks tinting warmly.

He frowned lightly, head tilted to the side like some sort of adorable confused puppy.

It made her heart skip a beat.

"Why? I-Is there something wrong with me giving you my phone…?" He asked curiously, before his eyes widened. "It isn't against the school rules is it?" He suddenly asked, afraid he'd done something wrong.

She giggled, the sound making him smile for some reason he didn't understand just yet. "No, goof!" She laughed, shaking the phone in her hands for emphasis. "Boys hide all their lewd stuff on their phones! What are you trying to show me, your secret lewd stash?!" She teased loudly, wiggling her eyebrows.

"Lewd stuff…?" He asked curiously, eyebrows raised.

"Uh huh!" She hummed, holding his phone hostage. She wiggled her eyebrows, waiting for him to panic…

"Like what?"

"…" She faltered.

"What did you have in mind?" He asked again, leaning a little closer. Her face flushed at his words, struggling to come up with a response that didn't make her seem like the pervert.

Because she wasn't, obviously!

"Y-You know! Don't play dumb!" She teased, wiggling her eyebrows.

"…?"

She flushed hot red, sputtering out something underneath her breath. "O-Oh you know-! L-Like those hot girl's magazines, or pictures of your favorite anime girl going down on the protagonist, or something super lewd like that…" She murmured quietly, face hot red as she spoke that out loud.

"Going… down?" He repeated slowly, one eyebrow raised questioningly.

Her face, if possible, managed to burn even brighter. "Y-You know!" She hissed, making a lewd motion with her hand towards her open mouth, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively for emphasis.

"Oh!" His eyes widened, dropping a fist into his open palm like he'd figured it out. "You mean like those smut manga I saw you reading earlier?" He asked, smiling once he realized that he'd figured it out.

Her face suddenly caught fire, mouth opening in horror. Her eyes twitched in mortification, face twitching. "W-W-What are you taking about, s-stupid Kōhai?! Don't you think you're projecting?!" She hissed, face in fire as her teasing grin cracked.

"Oh! I'm sorry!" He apologized quickly, rubbing the back of his head nervously. "I didn't know that was supposed to be a secret…" He trailed off, averting his gaze. "I didn't know popular girls like you read that sort of stuff…" He trailed off, genuinely meaning no offense.

He missed the way her mouth fell open in horror, before she suddenly cleared her throat. "Y-You must've been seeing things! Obviously I don't like that weird stuff!" She ranted, crossing her arms underneath her breasts as she looked away.

"Oh, of course. My mistake." He replied in understanding, realizing that such a revelation was probably something he should definitely keep secret.

"F-Forget about that! What were you drawing earlier?!" She quickly changed subjects, going through his bag. She quickly pulled out some sketches, immediately ready to bash them. "Wow, look at these! They so-" She mocked, before trailing off.

''Actually, these are really good. Is he seriously drawing manga? With a little story restructuring, this could actually sell…" She thought, genuinely surprised. ''Change the characters around and this could be a super good adult manga…''

"Hey, you should totally sell these." She muttered before she could stop herself, cheeks flushing as his eyes widened.

"Y-You really think so?" He asked in surprise, before retreating back to his seat. "I don't know, I think it still needs some work…" He murmured, scratching at his cheek nervously.

"W-Well duh! I mean, a nerd like you is writing it!" She laughed, cracking a grin at him. "I mean, only a virgin writes about a hot vampire princess with big boobs! I mean, why's she constantly tripping onto him, it's so weird. What, just so you have more pages with her boobs in his face?"

His expression faltered, finally realizing that he was talking to one of those popular girls…

How he'd only now realized it, he didn't know, but it certainly soured his mood.

"Mmmm… buuut… I think it's good enough, for you at least." She finally added, not wanting to leave off at a totally negative point.

She blinked when he stood up, snatching the papers from her hands before she could stop him. "Thanks… for your input." He muttered, gently shoving the drafts back into his bag, cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "But I should probably be leaving. See you later, Nagatoro-Senpai." He murmured, his voice still carrying that gentle nature to it, but it was clear he was upset.

"O-Oh? See you tomorrow-" She murmured, but he'd already left, the door shutting behind him.

Suddenly it was just her in the library, the room eerily quiet. She sighed, arm dropping to her side in disappointment once she realized that she'd chased him off. If she had cat ears, they'd be flat against her head in disappointment.

Before they eventually popped back up, a grin splitting her lips. "He's playing hard to get!" She whispered to herself, a gleam in her eyes. "Oh don't worry, my adorable little Kōhai, I don't give up that easily." She giggled lowly, eyes half lidded.

"See you tomorrow, Naoto-Kōhai…"
