The Legacies' Triad

Kate appreciated that she should be more focused on the fact that someone had been trying to abduct her and everything else that should be worrying her at the moment, but was it so wrong of her to want to enjoy the moment when she got to spend time with an Avenger's sister?

OK, so she wasn't the sister of Kate's favourite Avenger (actually, wasn't there something in those SHIELD files that got released a couple of years back about how Hawkeye had a brother?), but Black Widow was still pretty cool, so Kate wasn't going to 'complain' about the specifics. She still had a lot of questions about this situation, starting with exactly why an Avenger's sister was investigating an attempted abduction in the first place, but who cared about the finer details when she had a chance to meet an Avenger in person?

She just wished that the flat she was in right now had more going for it than the fact that it was the home of an Avenger's relative. She understood that a spy had to be discreet, but Kate had spent most of the morning after the abduction looking around and been disappointed to find nothing more interesting then exercise equipment and a couple of bookcases holding all kinds of foreign books she couldn't read. There were other bookcases with more conventional books, so Kate was at least able to find something to read once she had settled in, but apart from that she really didn't have much else to do right now.

I wish I could talk to Peter about this

Even though she was alone, Kate instinctively tried to force down the thought of her old friend. She couldn't say exactly when it had started, and she wouldn't go so far as to say she had an outright crush on her old friend, but before he'd just dropped out of her life a few months ago she'd definitely been aware of just how much cuter he'd become recently. He'd never explained if he'd decided to get contacts or had some kind of eye surgery (although how his aunt and uncle could have paid for surgery Kate had no idea), but once he stopped wearing his glasses, along with his clothes suddenly getting just that little bit tighter… well, Kate was a healthy young woman; she was allowed to notice a cute guy, right?

Or a cute woman

Was it worse to be having idle fantasies about an old friend who just saw you as a friend or the mysterious saviour who probably saw you as a kid? It wasn't like either of her interests were serious, and she wasn't going to act on them when she had so many other things going on in her life right now, but she couldn't help but feel a little guilty about being so divided…

The sound of the door opening prompted her to turn anxiously to look at the door, only relaxing when she saw that it was just her rescuer from the previous night. The blonde was still wearing that strange white suit she'd worn during the initial rescue, but at least she seemed to still be in good shape.

"You are well?" she asked.

"It… seems to be going OK," Kate shrugged. "I mean, I went through the day at school and then came straight here and nobody's tried to kidnap me yet…"

"You have pager?"

"Yeah… why am I keeping this again?" Kate held out the small device, once again amazed that anyone still used these. "I mean, if we're dealing in spy gadgets-"

"Pager keeps it simple; prevents risk of being hacked," Yelena cut her off mid-sentence. "It also includes tracking device."

"It does?" Kate looked at the object with new appreciation. "Huh… that is a new feature."

"If you are kidnapped it is easy to hide so I can find you again."

"Right…" Kate nodded, trying not to show her unease at the implication that there was still a threat out there before she decided to start questioning her saviour. "So where were you today?"

"Following other lead in my investigation," Yelena replied with a shrug.

"You have other leads?"

"I am tracking many different avenues of inquiry to find the person behind many crimes," Yelena explained. "So far none of them have proven fruitful, but this and my other lead are promising."

"What's the other lead?"

"That will be discussed later," Yelena said as she looked at Kate. "In the meantime, do you have any ideas why someone would want to abduct you?"

"Uh… is ransom an option?" Kate asked, hoping this wouldn't come across as too egocentric. "I mean, my mom's not Tony Stark-level rich, but we're not exactly poor either…"

"No," Yelena shook her head. "I do not know where your abductor is, but I know who is behind this, and they do not require money."

"Who-?"

"You would not know them, and it is safer if it stays that way," Yelena said, in a calm yet firm tone that made it clear she wouldn't discuss that matter further. "Aside from money, is there anything else that might make you worth kidnapping?"

"Well…" Kate began, hoping this wasn't going to come across as egotistical, "I am pretty good at archery."

"Archery."

"I mean… ever since Hawkeye saved my life during the Battle of New York, I… well, I've spent a lot of time training to try and match him," Kate explained, still secretly praying that Yelena wouldn't see her as a pathetic fangirl. "I've won a few contests, and I've done a bit of hand-to-hand training as well… I mean, I'm not going to say I'm Avenger-level, but I'd like to think I'm a bit above average…"

Yelena looked thoughtfully at her for a moment, but then she turned around and walked towards

As Kate watched, Yelena tapped a few books on the shelf, and there was a mechanical click as the whole bookcase moved back and to the side.

"How come-?"

"You have to trigger it in a very specific way," Yelena cut her off. "Just randomly pressing them does not work."

"That makes… sense…" Kate began, only to trail off when she looked at what was on the other side of the secret door. She'd done her fair share of training over the years since the Battle of New York, attending all kinds of self-defence classes and even joining a few archery groups, but she'd always been working in a group setting. Even with her inexperienced eye, she could tell that she was currently looking at a training room intended for one person's primary use, with single training mats and targets set up at various points around the room. Her attention was quickly drawn to the display case showing what could only be an armoury, which included a bow that Kate was suddenly itching to try out for herself.

"Wow…" she said, turning around to take it all in before she turned back to Yelena. "This is all for you?"

"It serves its purpose," Yelena said, before she shifted into a position that made Kate think of The Matrix, particularly with the tight outfit (OK, Switch was the only one in the franchise who wore white, but the look was still pretty cool). "Show me what you can do."

"Uh…" Kate began, before she copied Yelena's stance. "OK… here we go?"

Uncertain if this was the right call but lost for anything better to do, she started out with a quick punch to Yelena's face, only for the blow to be easily deflected. When Yelena didn't strike back, Kate delivered another punch, this time keeping an eye out at Yelena's arms and adjusting her strategy when the older woman tried to reflect it. The blow still didn't actually make contact, but Kate was able to use that distraction to try and kick out at Yelena's legs. The Black Widow's sister was only off-balance for a moment, but that was enough for Kate to deliver another punch to her face, only just remembering to dial back the punch so that she wouldn't hit her saviour too hard-

Kate wasn't sure how it happened, but she found herself on the floor with one arm pinned against her back, the other held down off to the side by Yelena's other hand. She was held down long enough to be aware of the older woman's legs on either side of her waist, but the moment passed and Yelena soon stood up. When Kate rolled over onto her back, she saw Yelena's hand extended towards her, and took advantage of the offer to let Yelena pull Kate back to her feet.

"You have potential," the blonde nodded at her in approval before she stepped back. "You should have been faster."

"I… didn't want to actually hit you," Kate said, feeling suddenly awkward at the admission as she flexed her previously-pinned arm. "I mean, if I thought we were actually fighting, I know I would have hit harder and gone faster, but if we're just training…"

"You are aware of your weakness; that is more than many could say," Yelena acknowledged, before she moved to indicate the weapons rack. "Now show me what you can do with that."

"Check," Kate grinned, walking over to take the bow and some arrows from the display. Moving over to take up position in front of one of the targets, she set about firing off a few quick shots, adding in some footwork as though she was in a combat situation in the hopes of making a more dramatic impression (and why was that so important to her?).

"Impressive," Yelena nodded at her once Kate stepped back after firing the last arrow. "You have great potential."

"Thanks?" Kate said cautiously. "So… does that help you?"

"It raises possibilities," Yelena nodded thoughtfully. "The people I am looking at have an interest in women who are trained in various skills. Their training typically starts on subjects younger than you are, but someone with your experience and natural talent could be useful to them…"

"They basically want to turn me into one of their agents?"

"That is the most likely explanation for their interest," Yelena nodded. "It is not the only one, but it is something to consider until we know more."

"And… how will we find that?"

"I am exploring options that will allow me to track them down at the moment, but until then you must be careful," Yelena said with a firm nod. "We will stick to the plan where you stay here when you are not elsewhere, and you will take precautions when you are travelling."

"OK," Kate nodded, briefly wondering if she should complain about these restrictions on her time before deciding that it wasn't worth it. With her mother away for a while, and most of her school friends just never getting anything she was interested in even before this all happened, there was nothing wrong with spending time with an attractive, intelligent, engaging woman who also happened to basically be the coolest person Kate had ever met…

OK, she still missed Peter, but it wasn't like he was qualified to get involved with any of this. She was sure he'd admire Yelena just as much as she did if he ever got a chance to meet her, but it was safer if he stayed out of this and she trusted Yelena to handle things for now (although she might recommend him as a candidate if Yelena found out she needed tech support of some sort…)
