The Legacies' Triad
Yelena was still undecided on if she had done the right thing by allowing Peter to persuade her to join him in attempting to intercept this deal. She could recognise that he had played a key part in helping her find most of this information in the first place, but on the other hand, there was a difference between basically letting him go off and fight street crime and purposefully staking out a potential arms deal like this. She had even done some research through Natasha's remaining contacts (who her sister had agreed to 'share' with her) and confirmed that the FBI had a couple of agents on-site to intercept the trade, but Peter felt and she agreed that when dealing with advanced weapons it was best to have an Avenger on-hand in case something went wrong.
As it was, Yelena privately counted herself lucky that Kate's school was far enough away that there was no way for the younger woman to get here in time to assist them. Kate Bishop had demonstrated some skill in hand-to-hand combat, and her archery skills were definitely above average, but Yelena was in no way ready for Kate to be out in the field like that… and when had she become so protective of the other girl?
She appreciated Natasha's goal as an Avenger was to protect the innocent, and obviously she had wanted to keep Kate away from the other Widow's plans to apparently capture her, but the notion that she was this invested in someone else's safety just because she liked them…
On the bright side, this particular mission was relatively straightforward by her usual standards. Yelena had managed to purchase a ticket on the ferry in time to intercept the planned deal, and was wearing a long green jacket and other civilian clothing, her gauntlets hidden under her sleeves and weapons in her coat pocket just in case they were needed. Peter was perched on the side of the ferry in his costume, taking care to avoid being seen as he took peeks in the windows trying to find any of their known targets. Yelena had been planning to 'explore' the ferry as well, but once Peter had pointed out that she might draw attention to herself that way, she had restricted herself to just taking a couple of brief walks around the passenger section until Peter had helped her identify their target. He hadn't had time to put together that proposed interface with his suit's A.I., but thanks to a set of earpieces Yelena had found in the safehouse, so long as Peter could keep an eye on things from outside he could basically provide that insight.
"In position," Yelena said as she sat down, tapping the earpiece and keeping her voice low as she studied the man Peter had identified as one of the sellers he'd seen in his first attempted intercept. "Our target?"
"Still seems unaware," Peter responded, an amused tone to his voice that Yelena would have dismissed as unprofessional in anyone else but she was coming to like when it came from Peter. "Susan can't gave me a name for the guy he's talking to, but I've got her running a search just in case… drone's keeping an eye on him for now; I'll check outside."
Sitting patiently in her seat, Yelena idly flicked through a book she'd grabbed from a gift shop near the docks, even as her attention remained on the unidentified man. He seemed older than the others, with thin greying hair and a weathered face, but there was nothing about him to suggest an obvious threat, even if she knew that meant nothing in her line of work. She would give Peter a few moments to scope out the situation on the upper deck by himself, but she had to be ready in case anything changed.
"OK," Peter said after a moment's pause. "Out here we have Mac Gargan, a guy with a big criminal record, talking with a couple of other people… he just said the weapons are in a white pickup truck somewhere further in, so I'm redirecting the drone to look for that… we have weapons, buyers and sellers all accounted- hold on; I have a call coming in."
"Confirm," Yelena said, allowing the earpiece to go silent before she reached up to adjust the settings on the device. While she trusted Peter wouldn't do anything that would be actively dangerous for her, and she recognised that he'd find it awkward if he knew she was listening in, she would prefer to be sure who he was talking to in case anyone made mistakes.
"-actually at school," Peter said, anxiety clear in his voice.
"Sounds like you had a good time in DC," responded a male speaker that Yelena immediately recognised as Tony Stark; she might not have met the armoured Avenger personally, but she'd watched enough footage of her sister in action to recognise his voice. "I never really got that much acknowledgement from my dad, so I guess I'm just trying to break the cycle of shame."
Yelena wondered how Peter felt about the idea of Tony Stark basically proclaiming himself a father figure in Peter's life. She was sure that Peter admired the older man, but even when her only experience of a father figure was Alexei, he at least had the decency not to force his status on them like that…
"Uh," Peter spoke up, "I'm kind of in the middle of something right now-"
"Don't cut me off when I'm complimenting you," Stark said. "Anyway, great things are about to-"
The sound of the ferry horn going off would have been disconcerting even if Yelena didn't have to basically hear it twice, both herself and over the radio.
"What was that?" Stark asked.
"I'm at band practice," Peter said (Yelena chose to be impressed at how quickly he came up with that cover).
"That's odd," Stark said with a sceptical tone. "Happy told me you quit band six weeks ago. What's up?"
"Gotta go," Peter said, ending the call and leaving Yelena with a silent earpiece. She stayed in her seat for a few moments, but when the target she'd been keeping an eye on stood up, she gave the older man a moment to get ahead of her and then got up to follow him. She had to hang back so that he wouldn't spot her before she was sure she could take him out, but she was able to keep him in visual range until he got to the main deck and ran for a white van.
Watching from the door at a point in the middle of the boat, Yelena saw the old man head towards a white van near one end of the ferry while Spider-Man battled the other dealers at the other side. She could see two men lying to the side of the boat with a motorbike just beside them, as though it had been thrown in their direction, and the dark-skinned man Peter had recognised earlier wearing some kind of gauntlets as he was trapped in the metal fence at the edge of the boat. The sound of flesh hitting metal drew Yelena's attention back to the older man as he stood beside a white van, a younger dark-haired man in a denim jacket lying on the ground. As the older man looked at Spider-Man standing at the edge of the boat, Yelena was about to move towards her target when several men emerged from various doors around the front of the boat to surround Spider-Man.
"Freeze!" one of the men said, their weapons all pointed at Spider-Man. "FBI!"
"Don't move," another man said.
"Get on the ground," the first man called out, his attention clearly focused on Peter.
"FBI?" Spider-Man said, Yelena only just able to hear his voice over the distance. "Hey, I get that this is your thing as well, but I'm just here to help-"
A mechanical wing burst from the truck, leaving Yelena cursing how she had allowed herself to get distracted; the older man must have been the one who wore the wingsuit, and he'd managed to get into the van while she was distracted by the agents surrounding her friend. She was aware of Peter calling at the agents to get out of the way, but that left her free to assess the situation as the man in the wingsuit literally tore his way out of the van and began to fly down towards the end of the boat. Yelena stepped back slightly so that she could stay away from the wings, but heard gunfire as the apparent FBI agents fired at their attacker, followed by the increasingly-familiar sound of an energy weapon being fired and metal hitting metal.
Hoping that she wasn't taking too great a risk, Yelena glanced around the corner to see that the man in the suit had managed to somehow throw a car at the end of the boat and had risen up to a point behind the ferry, while Peter urged the FBI agents to get away before he fired a web-line at the other man's leg. From her current position, Yelena could only just hear gunfire and metal striking metal, guessing that other FBI agents were trying to shoot at the new arrival, as well as the energy weapon being fired again. Peter was able to attach a web-line to a car and use it to try and pull his opponent down, but then the flying man pulled back with such force that Spider-Man was sent flying out from the boat and over the water.
Yelena fought down the urge to call out, reminding herself that she couldn't do anything to help against someone like that with her limited weapons, even as she shrugged off her jacket and slipped on the goggles she'd used as a 'disguise' during her recent interrogation; if an opportunity arose to help out, she had to be prepared. As she watched from the door, Peter was pulled off his feet and up towards his opponent, but managed to grab on to a support beam as he yelled out a command for taser webs. Yelena didn't see the result, but when a device covered in webbing hit the ground and began to emit energy blasts, Yelena knew that she had to act.
"Spider-Man!" she called out as she stepped out from the door, holding up her pistol.
"Widow?" Peter responded (Yelena approved of his word choice), looking up at her for a brief moment before he fired another web-line and swung the weapon upwards. Guessing his intentions, Yelena adjusted her gun and fired at the rising weapon, striking the device in the glowing section that she guessed was its power source. The precise shot caused a minor explosion mid-air as the weapon blew up, knocking a few of the surrounding cars back even as the weapon was destroyed. Yelena thought she heard the bird-man swear, but she didn't have time to take that in properly before he flew back past her towards the other end of the boat, closely followed by a familiar red-and-blue figure.
Deciding to focus on the other criminals present, Yelena ran to check on the enemies Peter had already knocked down, noting with relief that most of them were still dazed. With fragments of Peter's webbing still lying around, Yelena used the strands to tie their arms behind their backs, glad that she'd already treated her gloves to prevent her hands sticking to the adhesive substance (It was amazing what Peter could come up with). She glanced back to confirm that the man in the wingsuit had flown away and the FBI agents hadn't come back out yet, but she couldn't risk staying put in case the agents tried to arrest her as well as these people. She might be skilled enough to take on the criminals and the agents with advance notice, but there were too many civilians out there who could get hurt in the crossfire, and Peter and Kate wouldn't approve of her endangering FBI agents who were just doing their jobs rather than known criminals.
After making sure that only Peter was in a position to see her (and even he was currently at the other end of the boat), Yelena ran back to the door where she'd left her jacket, diving inside and shrugging the jacket back on even as she kept the goggles on as well. A quick adjustment allowed her to track infrared signatures even through the metal door, so she could see what was going on outside while staying hidden herself. Just as she'd hoped, the agents were gathering around the criminals she and Peter had already dealt with while Peter himself was down at the other end of the ship. There was no sign of the winged man, which was worrying in terms of their attempt to track the weapons but at least meant that Peter was safe-
Her thoughts were interrupted when another figure flew past her, grabbed Peter from the end of the boat, and took him up into the air. Yelena ran to the next level of the ferry, one hand instinctively going for her gun under her jacket, but halted herself when she reached a window and saw that Peter had been grabbed by one of the Iron Man armours rather than the returned bird-man. She didn't like the idea of her friend being dragged away from a crisis like that, but when the man in the wing-suit had already escaped, and the arms deal evidently ruined, there was nothing else she could do but hide among the ferry's other passengers.
All in all, not a bad day's work.
Peter wouldn't have thought it would happen this quickly, but he was definitely annoyed at Mr Stark butting in like this. Yelena had told him that the FBI were already keeping an eye on things, but it wasn't like he'd just decided to butt in on some random crime for the sake of it; regular agents would have been in serious trouble going after these kind of weapons on their own. He hadn't even been sure about letting Yelena come along, but when her sister had fought alongside Mr Stark in the Avengers she was clearly more than 'just' some woman with training (not that he'd ever say something like that to her face); that was still more than the average FBI agent…
"What was all that about?" Mr Stark's voice said through the armour as he came to a halt on the edge of a coastline building still within visual range of the ferry, the armour indicating the building's roof.
"What was all that about?" Peter repeated, taking the cue and jumping off the armour so that he could face it more directly (even if Mr Stark wasn't here directly he must have some kind of visual interface helping him control the suit). "I was intercepting an arms deal-"
"Which the FBI were already dealing with," Mr Stark interrupted him. "If you had just done nothing they could have arrested everyone-"
"Or maybe the guy in the wing-suit would have just dived in and sliced everyone apart without me there to help out; you can't know that!" Peter countered, resenting the idea that he hadn't thought this through. "I was trying to tell you about those weapons and you weren't even listening to me; if you cared, you might actually be here!"
Peter felt suddenly more awkward when the suit opened and Mr Stark stepped out, a glare on the founding Avenger's face as he looked at the younger vigilante.
"I did listen, kid," Mr Stark said firmly. "Who do you think called the FBI, huh? Do you know that I was the only one who believed in you? Everyone else said I was crazy to recruit a fourteen-year-old kid."
"I'm fifteen-"
"No, this is where you zip it, all right; the adults are talking," Mr Stark cut Peter off (Peter reminded himself that he couldn't have said more without exposing how he'd been working with Yelena on this particular 'case'). "What if somebody had died tonight? Different story, right? 'Cause that's on you. And if you died, I feel like that's on me. I don't need that on my conscience."
"But- it's not like anything went that wrong!" Peter protested. "I was careful, I kept track of everyone, I broke that weapon-"
"And did you know that you could do all that?" Mr Stark cut him off with a firm wave of his hands. "You can't just dive into big stuff and think it's going to be all right-"
"I did think about this!" Peter protested, once again reminding himself not to mention how Yelena had given him a few pointers on this case. "I took them by surprise, I focused on disarming them, I had everything pinned down; if the FBI guys hadn't interrupted me-"
"You can't just blame other people for your own screw-ups," Mr Stark said. "You were so focused on one thing that you didn't take everything into account, which is why that winged guy got away. Do you even realise how much legal crap I'm going to have to deal with now? You're already in a legal grey area because of the Accords; I've only been able to keep you off Ross's radar so far because you're basically just a local guy, but if you start interfering in government matters-"
"Interfering?" Peter repeated incredulously. "I was stopping weapons powered by alien tech; isn't that the kind of thing an Avenger should deal with?"
"The Accords were drawn up to stop us just barging in whenever we felt like it; if we act as though we have the right to interfere in everything we're basically proving our critics right."
"I'm not saying I think we have the right to just make everyone go along with what we want; I'm saying that this kind of threat is a bit beyond average law enforcement-"
"Which is not something we can just decide any more; after what happened in Lagos, we were lucky people weren't just demanding that certain people get arrested for war crimes-"
"Because one person made a mistake?" Peter protested, a part of him still unable to believe he was arguing with Mr Stark about this even as he knew he couldn't just stand down. "I did look that up, for the record; it's not like conventional law enforcement would have done any better stopping that Rumlow guy, and if the only alternative was letting him go off in the street with that virus he'd been trying to steal-"
"We can't just ask people to accept that we stopped a worse thing happening by letting something else happen, kid," Mr Stark said, the man's expression having somehow become even more grim as he glared at Peter before he shook his head and sighed. "OK, this isn't going to work out; I'll need the suit back."
"What?" Peter couldn't believe what the older man had just said. "You can't just- this is my suit-!"
"Which I made," Mr Stark cut him off. "You're clearly not ready for this kind of thing, so I'll be taking it back and you can go back to… whatever it is you were doing before this."
"That's it?" Peter stared at the founding Avenger, wondering if something in the world had suddenly shifted without him being aware of it.
He hadn't even done anything wrong, he'd just been trying to help out… and Mr Stark thought he could just decide that was it for Peter? The CEO and founding Avenger didn't even know the kind of precautions Peter had taken before getting on this ferry…
And I can't tell him about that because that means telling him about Kate and Yelena.
As much as Peter hated the implied threat to give up the suit, he couldn't expose his friends to the scrutiny of the Accords. Even if he didn't like all that stuff Mr Stark had said about how they had to answer to other people now instead of being able to just go in when they knew something bad was going to go down, Kate could just be condemned by association even if she hadn't done anything herself yet apart from hanging out with him and Yelena, and Yelena being Ms Romanoff's sister wouldn't win him any points with Senator Ross's people…
"…Fine," he said at last, looking at Mr Stark with what he hoped was a suitable amount of regret and apology on his face. "But… I don't exactly have any other clothes on me right now."
"We'll sort that out," Mr Stark said, with a cool dismissal in his tone that made it clear he considered the matter closed.
Peter wasn't sure that he agreed, but without giving away his new friends, he didn't have a leg to stand on if he tried to protest about Mr Stark's decision.
This sucks…
