December 1995, Grimmauld Place

Sirius watched as Neville and Darcy talked, separate from the other kids as they played games of Exploding Snap or chatted amongst themselves.

There was something going on between those two, and Sirius didn't like it.

"Stop staring at them, Sirius", Remus told his best friend as he joined him in the kitchen. "It's creepy."

"Creepy? Well, I'm sorry that I'm the only one worried about Darcy."

Remus raised his eyebrows. "What are you worried about? Neville? Please, Sirius. They're just friends."

Sirius scoffed and finally tore his eyes away from the kids to look at his friend. "Yeah, okay. You obviously haven't been paying attention."

"No, I haven't been staring at the both of them for the last three days like you have. But we both know her, Padfoot. I think we'd know if-"

Remus stopped when he heard Darcy laugh at something Neville said. But it didn't sound like her real laugh, which they had heard countless times. No, this was different. It almost sounded nervous, or unsure. Looking closer at her, the werewolf could see her blushing a bit as she looked back at the boy.

"How do you explain that, Moony?", Sirius said smugly. "She has a crush on him, and I think he likes her, too."

"Just let them be", Remus sighed. "I'm sure it's-"

"Darcy love?", Sirius called to her in a sing-song voice. "Can you come here for a moment?"

His goddaughter tilted her head in confusion before looking at Neville. She shrugged and said something that Sirius couldn't hear (Remus could, thanks to his werewolf hearing, and snorted). Neville went to join the other kids in the sitting room while Darcy walked over to them.

"Yeah?"

"What were you and Neville talking about?"

"School. Why?"

"So that horrible fake laugh was about Snape?"

She rolled her eyes and looked at Remus pleadingly, as she always did when Sirius teased her and she wanted him to stop.

"Leave her alone, Sirius", the other man said. He turned to Darcy. "Your godfather thinks that you and Neville have feelings for each other."

Darcy blushed and looked away.

"Ha!", Sirius cheered. "I knew I was right!"

"Don't say anything to anyone else, okay?", his goddaughter begged. "And please, please don't say anything to Neville. I don't want to scare him off."

Sirius gasped in mock-offense. "I can't believe you would suggest such a thing from me. Now, go on and make him your boyfriend already."

Darcy glared at him before turning and walking out of the kitchen towards the sitting room.

"I know you want to talk to him", Remus said once she was gone.

"Of course I do", Sirius scoffed. "Don't you?"

"No, because I want to respect the fact that she doesn't want us to. You know she'll never forgive you if you do."

"She says that all the time", Sirius said, waving him off.

"Alright then", Remus sighed. "Don't be upset when she decides to never speak to you again."

The night before the children were going back to school, Sirius decided to talk with Neville. Everyone else had already gone to bed, including Remus and Darcy.

"Neville, can I talk to you for a bit?", he asked.

"Oh, sure, Sirius."

Sirius sat down at the kitchen table and motioned for the boy to sit across from him. He did, looking a bit confused.

"I've noticed you and Darcy talking quite a bit lately."

Neville blushed a bit. "Oh, yeah. Yeah, we've gotten closer this year."

Bad choice of words, Sirius thought with an inward grimace.

"Right", he said. "I just want you to know that Darcy means everything to Remus and me. So, if I ever hear about you hurting her in any way, we are going to have a problem. Got it?"

Neville paled and nodded vigorously. "Y-yes. Yes, sir."

"Good", Sirius nodded approvingly. "Goodnight, Neville."

"Goodnight, Sirius." The boy practically ran up the stairs, passing right by a very annoyed-looking Darcy, who walked into the kitchen a moment later.

"Oh, hey, love", Sirius said when he saw her. "Shouldn't you be in bed? You have to get up early tomorrow to-"

"I told you not to talk to him!", Darcy exclaimed quietly.

"I didn't say anything too bad", her godfather said defensively. "Look, I'm sorry, Darcy. I just want to protect you."

Darcy sighed in frustration. "I know. Just...leave him alone from now on, please."

"Only if he doesn't do anything stupid."

Darcy rolled her eyes before going back upstairs to bed.
