Chapter Twenty-Eight:
The audience was in suspense, seeing how brutal the last match was. Some Pro Heroes wanting to leave because it was a bit too much for them. A small conversation was happening between two pros.
"That Midoriya is stronger than I initially thought, but the 1000-dollar question is this: who taught him?"
"You don't think..."
"No, no way. Why would any underground fighter want to train a future hero?"
"Maybe give them the chance they didn't have?"
"... Okay, I can believe that."
Infirmary
Kendo is still healing up while Midoriya is flexing his fingers, mainly to be sure that his hand is still functional.
"Midoriya, I think your hand is fine. But... there's your final match. Todoroki."
"Right. He's got a powerful Quirk, on the other hand, that's also his biggest drawback."
"Because he's only using one side of his Quirk which will definitely cause him some frostbite if he overuses it. Plus, he rarely utilizes hand to hand combat on top of that."
"I believe it's time for you to get ready, Midoriya."
The green-haired kid got up, ready to get to the player waiting room.
Player Waiting Room 2
Shoto was silent, doing some last-minute stretches.
"You're not taking me down, Midoriya."
However, the thoughts of getting hit by those punches of his scared him a bit, but he progressed too far to stop at this point. It was to prove to that bastard father of his that his power was optional, not necessary.
Player Waiting Room 1
Izuku was doing some stretches along with his master, mainly to loosen up any jitters or limbs, plus some light punching.
"He's gonna likely try freezing you, forcing the fight to his advantage, so you'll need to use compact blows so Todoroki doesn't get a chance to freeze upon contact."
"True. Plus I can use the fact he's not too skilled at unarmed combat."
"How did you come to that conclusion?"
"Whenever he used unarmed combat, he used it to finish the fight, not during the fight."
Kensei nodded while Izuku was getting ready to face Todoroki.
As he was walking towards the entrance, a masculine voice interrupted him, taking him off-guard.
"Your techniques are a bit peculiar. However, there's something off... they remind me of someone," said the voice. Izuku slowly turned around, seeing a flaming beard, revealing it to be the Number Two, Endeavor.
"... Exactly what?"
"A vigilante of sorts, but I'm sure that's coincidental. There was something import-"
"Do you really have the time for a conversation, Izuku?" interrupted Kensei, getting the flame hero's attention. "I believe your opponent is waiting."
"I was having a conversation with the boy. Before you-"
"You can have this little convo after the fight's done. Besides, if you have questions about his fighting style, you can ask his teacher which happens to be me."
Endeavor was not liking where this was going, he needed some more info on the boy, then attempted to walk towards Izuku who was walking away.
"Now now. We haven't finished our talk yet."
The flame hero is getting incensed at this a bit, "Move. Out. Of. My. Way."
"No offense, you don't strike me as the type to left alone with a kid."
"What did you just-"
"The spite coming from the red-white kid was obvious enough, plus the scar? It looked like a burn that still needs some healing. What's the story on that?"
"... None of your business. Are you actually threa-"
The Number Two's sentence was interrupted by Kensei emitting a heavy force, sending the former back a bit. Endeavor was shocked by this, he was backing off?!
"If there's one thing that earned a permanent place on my shit-list, it's terrible parents," Kensei said with an edge. "I speak from experience, dealt with a couple in the past. You, my friend, just happen to earn yourself a place at the top."
"N-N-Now, see here..."
"Shut up. I'm not done yet. Now, I may not have the entire story, but the fear you just showed? You outright confirmed it. You were abusing the kid, were you?"
Endeavor was gritting his teeth but it was true, he was afraid. The boy's buff teacher nearly figured him out, but he doesn't have evidence of it. It was the only saving grace.
"I... just wanted to tell him that it's my boy's duty to surpass All-Might! I wanted to tell him that-"
"Really? Surpass All-Might? That's your reason?" responded Kensei, he got closer to the flame hero's side, then whispered...
"Is that your reason for subjecting your own son to abuse? Surpassing the number one? Fulfilling a dream you couldn't do?"
Endeavor tried to stay brave, but that man's aura was undoing that, realizing a horrific conclusion: this man could kill him without touching him.
"My student is not like me nor your son is like you, thank god. However, if you want some payback for a humiliation, feel free to find me," said Kensei as he walked away.
The flame hero was in a mix of emotions: fear and frustration.
'Who was he?!'
"ALRIGHTY! NOW FOR THE FINALS!"
"Finally..."
"IN THE LEFT CORNER! YOU KNOW HIM AND LOVE HIM! TO HECK WITH IT, GIVE IT UP FOR THE EMERALD FIST, IZUKU MIDORIYA!"
The green-haired kid went out into the ring, throwing some punches as he made his way.
"IN THE RIGHT CORNER, HE HAS DOMINATED HIS OPPOSITION SO FAR, ALBEIT WITH THE COLD SHOULDER! SHOTO TODOROKI!"
The bi-haired kid walked into the ring, barely showing any emotion at all.
The two were facing each other, slowly taking their stances. On the left, Izuku was taking his basic stance from Jeet Kune Do. On the right, Todoroki was in a boxing stance.
"FIGHTERS... AT THE READY!
AND FIGHT!"
Todoroki closed the distance by sliding on an ice-generated slide, ready to strike him. He was circling around him, ready to freeze him...
POW!
A spinning elbow strike was sent into the bi-haired boy's midsection, taking some wind out of him. He then grabbed him in a clinch but aimed for the ribs with a knee strike.
GACHK!
Todoroki gagged from the impact alone but then responded by freezing him by grabbing the lapels of his PE uniform.
"Got...cha, Midoriya."
The ice started encasing Izuku's upper frame, but then Todoroki saw his body emit an aura.
KRACK!
He broke out of the ice, forcing Todoroki to form a shield in desperation, but he wasn't prepared for this...
Hokuto Snake Thunder Bite!
A weaving pattern that ends with a rush punch!
BAM!
The punch is so intense, Shoto's eyes widen, also causing the audience to cringe at how loud the impact was.
Audience Stands [1-A]
"Is he trying to kill him?!" Momo responded frantically.
"Hmm... he's trying to force Shoto to use the other half of his Quirk. You noticed the brief flames, right?"
"From the Cavalry Battle, right?" asked Mina.
"Correct."
"The... hell! You almost... killed... Were you trying-"
"If there's one thing I noticed, you're not giving it your all."
"WHAT!?"
"Are you actually trying to be a hero?"
"... Did my bastard father put you up to this?!" yelled Shoto as he threw ice shards at him. Izuku was able to dodge by weaving side to side, then send a vicious vertical elbow strike.
BAM!
Todoroki was holding his nose, saying "You're not using your Quirk... why?"
"Is that really your concern now?"
"Don't you fucking-" yelled Shoto as he closed the distance, forming his ice gauntlet.
Frostbite Strike!
A forearm block was Izuku's response, then a horizontal elbow strike, cutting into the temple.
"You have potential, Todoroki. You're fucking wasting it. All over a grudge. A petty grudge."
"I will not. Will not. Use HIS power!" yelled Todoroki. "I will rely on my mother's!"
POW!
A low kick was sent into Todoroki's leg, causing him to stumble.
"Use it."
"I will not!" yelled Todoroki as he sent a punch to Izuku's face, but it barely affected him. The boy responded with direct jabs, all straight into Todoroki's frame.
' Punches... making me... '
BAM! POW!
SMACK!
'Swirl... can't... keep up...'
POW!
'Forget It! Forget my father's training! Forget that stupid goal of his!'
SMACK! SMACK!
"It's your power! No one else's!" shouted Izuku as kept at it. Todoroki was now gasping, dropping to the floor after that last jab, gagging once and twice.
"I just need... to beat you!"
In a twist, the other side of Shoto lit up with flames. It didn't hurt him, but he had a grin, finally accepting the side that he despised.
"SHOTO! You did it! You finally embraced it!"
"That's what I was waiting for, Todoroki."
"So, you were just messing around? Wow, I'm a bit offended," responded Shoto but with a grin. "I hope you don't blame me for what happens afterward."
Both of them now closed the distance sending out flurries of strikes, but Shoto noticed Izuku emitting his aura more so, but the former then delivered an uppercut into Todoroki's face, causing him to stumble. He then utilized his flames, forcing Izuku to back off for a bit.
However, he didn't expect this!
Izuku jumping over the fire that Shoto generated, specifically landing two meters away from him. The kid then sped towards him, ready to deliver a package of punches. Shoto immediately formed flames to defend himself but no impact came.
WHAM!
A heavy roundhouse kick into the midsection.
POW!
Shoto responded with a hook punch.
BAM!
Izuku responded with a vertical elbow strike which sent Shoto back a bit. However, the latter sent out another stream of fire but Izuku side-stepped, getting singed slightly.
'Shit! He's getting closer!'
Todoroki was ready to fire off some ice now, specifically the Frostbite Strike again. However, Izuku was closing in with an elbow strike, ready to strike him in the face...
KRIK!
The elbow was actually aiming at the ice gauntlet that Todoroki made, serving a two-fold purpose: cracking the armored shell AND hurting Todoroki's fingers.
"Ahh! Shit!" Todoroki yelped, then held his hand in pain, wondering if Midoriya's hand is made of steel. "You're definitely powerful... so much so that my father is fuming in the stands over there."
"I only wonder, how much you can still handle?"
Todoroki answered by throwing another stream of fire, searing a bit of Midoriya's hair, but that was the feint. He went for a flying knee, but it was covered in ice!
Soaring Frost Knee!
However, the knee strike had the clinch involved. It stunned Midoriya actually, but the bi-haired boy wasn't gonna let up. Shoto then covered both hands in ice and flame, unleashing a flurry of straights and jabs, but there was a missing component... and he would find out in the most painful of ways.
WHIFF!
The last hit didn't have an impact, but was gripped!
"My turn."
WHAM!
A vicious punch sent Todoroki careening in the air briefly, only for the worst to come!
Raging Storm Barrage!
It was a flurry of side-kicks, fast ones, fast enough to seem like a blur. Some of the audience counted up to 10-15 kicks in total with the final being a rising kick. The boy was down but realized he HAS to end this fight, otherwise, he might ACTUALLY die.
He quickly got back up, then decided to utilize this move!
Shoto thoroughly cooled the air...
Izuku's aura was emitting more, but he was slowly tearing his shirt by expanding a bit, revealing his solid frame.
"This is where I win."
They both dashed forward...
Shoto switched over to his fire, rapidly heating AND expanding the air, prepping a definite blast.
Izuku's fists were glowing with pure aura, enough to act as a two-fold weapon: shield and battering ram.
"Shit! We gotta stop them!" screamed one of the teachers. The two charging at each other were turning the arena into rubble by just dashing toward each other, almost like two wild beasts headed toward each other.
"You two need to-" shouted Midnight, but shut up quickly as she used her Quirk to emit her sleeping gas. Cementoss, on the other hand, created several cement walls to at least stop them.
It wouldn't make much of a difference.
KRAKA-BOOM!
A large shockwave was heard throughout the stadium as both collided. It was like that of a thunderstorm sending out a gigantic lightning bolt as the first wave, shocking the audience, and more.
RUMBLE! RUMBLE! RUMBLE!
The whole arena also shook in tandem, forcing some of the audience to take cover in the case of any falling debris. Some Pro Heroes were close to intervening while the fighters shook with excitement.
The rumbling soon stopped, but there was still dust in the air... some heroes with wind-based Quirks helped out. As soon as it was cleared, a figure was found embedded in the stadium's wall, VERY embedded.
One detail stood out, a heavy imprint of a pair of twin fists in the chest area, complete with some bruises on the body.
The last detail was red and white hair.
In the center of the ring...
A boy was down on a single knee, fist out, but he had some burns and cuts on his body. He inhaled, reminding himself that he was still alive, then exhaled upwards, raising his hand in victory.
The audience was stunned in silence. However, there was a set of handclaps.
It came from a man with tanned skin, complete with a salt and pepper black beard, and having an impressive muscular frame. It was followed by others whose builds were lean or heavy, but the Pro Heroes in the audience knew it: they were professional fighters.
"Give this boy, no, man, a round of applause!" said the tanned man who revealed himself to have a thick Spanish accent. The sections close to the Latin man followed suit, accompanied by other professional fighters.
In a few moments, the whole stadium erupted with cheers afterward.
"THE WINNER OF THE SPORTS FESTIVAL! IZUKU MIDORIYA!"
The cheers were near-deafening, but Izuku stood still. He slumped onto the floor, exhaustion finally catching up to him. Thankfully, stretchers were called out for both of them.
Student Sections [1-A & 1-B]
Both classes were shocked, to say the least, but there was an undercurrent of fear. Well, part of it was fear and the other part awe. Mina broke the tension by saying, "Midori is stronger than I actually thought, phew... his teachers did not mess around when it came to training him."
"Was that big buff guy Midoriya's teacher?" asked Kirishima.
"Yup, Kensei Kasumi. Though, there's something he had before that caught me off guard."
Kirishima and others looked a bit in confusion, Sato asking "Yea... he said professional fighters were in the crowd or something?"
"Wait a minute, this is just a guess on my part," Ojiro piped up, "Maybe these pro fighters are here for some bonus round or something?"
"I'm of the same opinion too!" responded someone from 1-B, a boy with grey hair.
Name: Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu
Quirk: Steel - The user transforms his body into that of steel, protecting him from harm and increasing his strength overall.
"Wait a minute, I recognize that fighter!" yelled one of the females in 1-B, it was a horned girl. "He's Rafael Alvarado! One of the few Olympic wrestlers that transitioned successfully into MMA!"
"Wait, you watch MMA, Pony?" asked Tetsutetsu.
"Oh definitely. Aside from watching anime, there's this one anime I recommend checking out! It's called Magan Ares, a big MMA-"
"Show us after the Sports Festival is done, okay?" interrupted Hiryu. The horned girl gave a thumbs-up.
"I'm going to assume that the awards ceremony should start soon," said a well-to-do student covered in tons of hair.
Announcers' Booth
"So... is All-Might going to hand out the awards now or..."
"Now, it's time for the surprise," exclaimed Antonius. "As you know, you notice that quite a few professional fighters revealed themselves once Midoriya won the match. There was a purpose to this: Nezu wanted to create a bonus round..."
"... to test our current students, am I right?" finished Aizawa.
Antonius nodded yes.
"So is there a name for this rou-"
"The Apex Fist Royale! Students vs. Fighters in intense matches! I like to mention that some of these pro fighters are also Pro Heroes too!"
The whole audience was in a state of confusion while the fighters in the crowd grinned. The Pro Heroes were interested in seeing how these pro fighters handle Hero Course students.
"One-on-one, Two-on-two, handicap, tag-team, whatever match can be done! All that matters is that you fight till the end!"
The Hero Course was fairly shocked by this, a surprise round? The rest of the student body was shocked by this revelation, but they were curious to see as some of them were fans of MMA, Boxing, and other combat sports. Some of them start making bets.
The Infirmary
Bakugo was caught off-guard by this but scoffed believing he could beat them. However, that thought was quickly squashed as soon as he thought of Kensei.
"Dammit. That guy can potentially clear the whole thing... I can't believe I'm saying this: he's stronger than me, fuck, he could be on All-Might's level for all I know. Fuck, there's no chance for me actually beat him.
However, the other fighters... that's another matter."
"A fighter's tourney, I only wonder... who will be in the first match?" Iida spoke.
The Infirmary
Izuku and Shoto were in the infirmary, but it's the former's second time. The latter was covered in quite a few bandages, sighing at his defeat, but Izuku interrupted by saying:
"You have power definitely, but your-"
"I know, I did not expect you to have this MUCH power behind those strikes of yours, ow."
"My master's sense of self-restraint was very minimal."
Shoto's eyes widened but got worried, mainly because of his 'training sessions' with his father.
"Was there..."
"Oh, oh, NO. He knew when to end the sessions. In addition, he was also the reason why I passed the Entrance Exam and my finals during Junior High."
"Oh! So a tutor too."
"Exactly. Plus I also think the Pro Heroes in the audience are going to question me. A lot."
"Wait, why?" Shoto asked, curious.
"They're gonna ask if I'm some sort of vigilante in the making, considering my performance. In addition, the USJ incident, I most likely put a target on my back, whether it's for pros, fans, or even wannabe tough guys."
Shoto took this info in, realizing that Midoriya might be right, that performance will attract a lot of attention, even those of unsavory intentions. A bigger question leaked into his mind: who was Izuku's master truly?
However, the green-haired boy interrupted by saying: "Wait, look up there, Todoroki."
Todoroki's attention was focused on the TV screen, revealing a whole group of what seems to be professional fighters.
"Our classmates will be in an uphill battle, that's for sure."
"How so?"
"Can you honestly see Mineta beating one of them?"
Midoriya had to concede.
Some audience sections were becoming quickly vacant, only to see that the bottom entrance is overflowing with professional fighters of various builds: heavyweights, lightweights, and ones between.
However, there was a leading force of at least 10 in the front.
The Apex Fist Royale would be soon underway...
Aizawa is wondering what's Nezu's real plan for this is...
One of the fighters made his way to the ring: he was a bit of a giant with wild red hair, complete with leather pants, and a bit of sleeveless coat. Some fighters were a bit wary of letting him fight, considering what type of man he was.
Name: Raserei
Quirk: Wrathful Spirit - A strength-enhancer Quirk at first, but depends on the user's overall rage level. As rage increases, so does the user's strength, reflexes, and durability. However, it starts decreasing the user's level of technique, making the user little more than a raging beast.
"I'm gonna feel sorry for whoever has to face that beast," Rafael stated.
"If it's any consolation, Raserei's been getting better at handling his rage."
On the other end, some of the Hero Course students were a bit intimidated by him. Some wondering if this was optional to join, but some like Kirishima and Shoji thought this would be a good opportunity to show off what they can do.
In a few minutes, the first match would be underway, revealing the title card...
MEZO SHOJI VS. RASEREI!
The tall boy was surprised by this turn of events. However, he felt ready to face the challenge...
Author's Note:
Rafael Alvarado is based on Yoel Romero who was an Olympic silver medalist in the realm of wrestling but made his way into MMA years later. Here's the thing: he's known for his insane athleticism and he's only in his early 40's. Trust me when I say this, the guy's in the best shape of his life. The fighter's name meanings: derived from 'God heals', 'place on the hot plain'.
Raserei is based on Rima from Rei Gaiden, especially since his name means 'frenzy' in German. Fun fact: Rima was part of an experiment called the Berserker Brothers.
Soaring Frost Knee - Shoto's own version of the flying knee kick, but his knee is covered in ice for increased damage. Its original name is Shoso Hisa [the characters 'sho' and 'so' mean 'soaring' [flying] and 'frost'; hiza means knee].
Raging Storm Barrage - An original technique that is a fast series of side-kicks, sent into the center and upper regions of the body, and the coup de grace? A rising kick to knock the opponent off balance. Its name in Japanese being Gekiran Renda.
Stay tuned for the next chapter!
