Chapter Thirty:
Nebel was tapping the floor with her foot two times, mainly to pass the time until her opponent came out. She also realized that her parents could be watching too, she's hoping they won't be worried like always.
1-A Section
"So... who wants to face her?"
"Maybe I'll go, I can handle grapplers for the most part," said Ojiro. He was walking forward until Yaoyorozu stopped him by placing her hand on the shoulder, saying "Wait, I'll go."
"Why?"
"We don't know what type of Quirk you might deal with; for all I know, it might be a natural counter to yours."
"The same can be said for you, no offense. Wait, are weapons allowed at all?"
"I... think. Well, I can make gloves to work my way around that type of restriction."
As the discussion between Ojiro and Yaoyorozu was becoming longer, a series of steps made their way to the ring, the discussion quickly stopped as Present Mic announced who the fighter was.
"OH MY! THIS IS QUITE A SURPRISE! THE PUNK ROCK STAR OF 1-A, KYOKA JIRO MAKES HER WAY TO THE RING!"
Both of them were quite shocked by this, followed by 1-A and 1-B even.
"Wait, what type of Quirk does she have?"
"A sound amplifier Quirk, it was called Earphone Jack, I think."
Jiro silenced all the comments by focusing on her opponent, but with the limited info she had on Farah Nebel, she would have to play things from a safe distance.
Name: Kyoka Jiro
Quirk: Earphone Jack - The user is granted long, controllable earlobes that work like headphone cables. They also can channel the vibrations of her heartbeat via jabbing them into objects, e.g. people, walls. As of now, their length is 6 meters while their detectable range is 12 meters. In addition, they can act as prehensile limbs too.
Farah was patient as Kyoka approached her, the latter taking a normal stance you'd see in MMA.
"ARE YOU BOTH READY!?"
Both fighters nodded.
"FIGHT!"
The sound-user girl cautiously approached Nebel who then dashed towards her, forcing the former to utilize her elongated ear lobes to strike Nebel!
WOOSH!
Nebel managed to sidestep but lowered her center... ready.
SMASH!
A liver shot into Jiro! The rocker was stunned by this, now clutching her hurt spot, but that's what Nebel was counting on. She wailed on her with jabs but three hits seemed the heaviest: two straights and a front kick. Right into the midsection.
Jiro was holding a half guard, chastising herself for that mistake, specifically letting Nebel getting close. She managed to power through by striking Nebel with a jab, then her earlobes next.
WOOSH!
"Did she just vanish?!" exclaimed Aizawa. "Yes, Yes she did! A teleporter likely, that means she can hit from any angle, right?"
Jiro was keeping her guard up, wary of where she could strike next. There had to be a sign on where she's coming from, right? As she was planning, it would be interrupted by what the crowd compared to a gunshot.
Thunder Blink!
A surprise uppercut, bypassing Jiro's guard, and stunning her at once!
WOOSH!
She vanished again but reappeared right at her back-side. Nebel grabbed her by the waist, hauling her up, and ready to deliver the pain.
Ghostbound!
Nebel fell backward, slamming the rocker onto the ring, and performed another one again! In her desperation, she quickly jabbed Nebel with the earlobes, forcing her to yelp, and then performing the following attack!
Heartbeat Jab!
A fast jab which was the follow up to a vibration-based attack.
Nebel's hold quickly broke because of the heavy shock to the system. Jiro took this chance to get further away, then come back with trying to jab her from a distance. She then vanished again, dodging the ear jabs.
"Where is she gonn-"
BAM!
She was surprised by a hook punch, but she hit her guard instead, which led Kyoka to tackle her to the ground.
1-B Section
"That's not good. Not good at all. Nebel is a grappler, if anything, I suspect her base is definitely wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu," commented Tetsutetsu.
"Wait, you mean..." responded Monoma.
"She put herself in a worse spot."
Jiro was on top, now wailing on Nebel who was barely putting up her guard, but this was playing into her trap. "Oh, you're not getting that chance!" yelled Kyoka as she jabbed her earlobes into Nebel.
The magenta-haired fighter was bearing that pain that had Kyoka push down on her, preventing her from moving any further.
However, the movement of her hands told a different story. They moved to the left, then with surprising speed, pushed Kyoka's arms off her body and most importantly, ruined her balance.
Nebel wrapped her right arm around Jiro's neck, then locked it with her left via the right wrist!
"Wait! Is that!"
"Yes, Present Mic. A technique within BJJ, the Rear Choke. But from the Guard. Let's see how Jiro can escape from this."
Jiro just jabbed her ear-lobe jacks into Nebel. Constantly.
"LET-
GO
OF
ME!"
The rear choke's hold was getting stronger, depriving Jiro of some air, making her flail her arms. The jabbing intensified more, Nebel felt this was the equivalent of being hit by several bee stings. The final five jabs driven into her made her hold start loosening. Jiro managed to make some space between her and Nebel, backing away from any grappling maneuver she might try.
WOOSH!
She felt a flying knee right into her nose, knocking her back. The rocker held her nose from bleeding a bit more, then sent out one of her ear-lobes for a jab, but it only hit the air.
"Gotcha!"
Thunder Blink!
However, she managed to get out of the way. Now-
BAM!
A spinning hook shot was sent into Jiro's face, dazing her, and she then vanished again!
SMACK!
A low kick to the knee, causing her to buckle. She tried all she can, whether it was throwing her jacks or a jab at Nebel, but the gap between them was obvious. Nebel vanished once again, only to end at her back, putting her in a sleeper hold.
The next five seconds had Jiro jabbing in vain.
Nebel had to let go which led the rocker to unload on her further, but there was something strange. She could have vanished when she was jabbing her unless...
'Maybe it's not that she chooses to, it's because she can't!'
Jiro managed to close the distance as Nebel was blocking still, then landed a straight punch, shocking her a bit. The magenta-haired fighter responded with a jab into Jiro's face, stunning her, stopping her barrage.
Single Leg Takedown!
Nebel lefted Jiro's right leg, which offset her balance, and fell her onto the ground. Nebel got into the mount position, kept herself centered, though Jiro was struggling against her, but she got an elbow for her trouble.
Jiro's new goal: escape whatever hold she was planning to execute.
The rocker wrapped around the midsection to close whatever distance she required. Nebel stepped forward with a knee, then pushed Jiro's head down with some force, and the rocker realized this fight was going to be it. Maybe.
CRUNCH!
Jiro flinched in pain as her arm was trapped: elbow pinned her arm to Nebel's side; Upper body turned slightly to take control of the rocker's wrist with the same side hand; the lock technique from BJJ was almost complete.
Nebel utilized her other hand to clutch her own wrist to complete the Kimura Lock.
The rocker was now feeling it! She struggled, flailing her arm in an attempt to get loose, but it was a pointless effort. She wasn't able to handle the pressure, literally in this case...
The first five seconds had her utilize her earlobe jacks to stun her, but the pain she was in made her jabbing attacks less effective. The following four seconds would have Jiro forming a fist, but relented into this outcome: tapping out.
"WINNER BY TAPOUT! FARAH NEBEL!"
Jiro felt the pain instantly vanish as she got up, but still felt some when moving the affecting arm.
"I'm gonna say this, your sound-based Quirk would have gotten me more times than you think."
The rocker listened to this, then got a questioning look on her face.
"Here's the thing about my Quirk, Tether. I can't teleport wherever I want. It's only from one point [anywhere in the ring] to a specific waypoint. That waypoint has one condition: triple strike combo with either a kick or punch."
"Wait... did any other opponent took advantage of this drawback?"
"Oh, definitely. Three of my previous opponents found out how my Quirk functioned. They exploited where I would potentially appear and strike me there."
Jiro nodded, plus Nebel also gave her some advice.
"Utilize your jacks in tandems with your strikes, that way you can stun your opponents long for a decisive strike, and on top of that, your Quirk can honestly break down their guard a bit."
"Huh, I was always thinking of utilizing my Quirk with a bit of strategy: intel gathering. But utilizing my Quirk in tandem with a combat style, hm... could it be effective?"
"With your build, I picture you being a very quick fighter with hit-and-run tactics."
Jiro took this advice but realized they needed to be off the ring to prep for the next round.
1-B Section
"Wow, it did not end in a vicious beatdown. I'm surprised," said Tetsutetsu. "That all makes me want to go down to the ring!"
Some of his classmates were a bit worried, but the one voice in support of him was Monoma!
"Go down there and show them what 1-B is truly capable of!"
The iron-skinned boy went down the stairs while the other section had a similar discussion.
1-A Section
"THAT. FIGHT. WAS. AWESOME."
Ojiro did agree to an extent, but Jiro had the fight stacked against her to start. Kirishima, on the other hand, wanted to join in. In fact, he got up on his feet to walk down to the ring.
"I really hope they don't get too badly beaten," commented Asui.
Pro Fighters Section
Nebel walked into the section, some of her fellow fighters did congratulate her for a well-fought fight, but one heavyweight masked wrestler who had a Calavera-motif going on asked this:
"What's your opinion on some of the Heroic Course students so far?"
"They got potential but a glaring gap in their combat skills is the biggest wall they'll have. Though I'll be honest, some of them can be pro fighters if they choose to be," responded Nebel.
"Interesting to note," responded the Calavera-themed wrestler. "I also need to add this: that Midoriya shown off quite the power along with those compact strikes and combos. Kendo and Ashido too. I'm impressed they didn't have to use their Quirks that much either."
"That's very true, but who's next?"
A fairly tall and broad-shouldered man stood up, he had ear-length black hair, a groomed beard, and most of all, a stag tattoo on his back. "I'll go."
"Oh, you want to go, Duncan?" said the masked fighter.
"Why not? If anything, I get to show my fans in Japan that me winning my title in the Apex Combat Championship wasn't a one-time thing," responded the now-named Duncan.
Announcers' Booth
"So, who's the next fighter?"
"Duncan Bar Cruach, a welterweight MMA fighter who won the title in the ACC but lost it to a famed fighter named Lyon Betefort. What made him stand out from others is this, he fought in Mad Beast Royale, an MMA promotion with little rules, and on top of that, he fought and survived some vicious monsters in the ring."
"Wait? You're saying he fought in matches that could result in death potentially?!" said an alarmed Present Mic.
"Exactly!"
"Where the hell is Mad Beast Royale?" asked Aizawa.
"It's on the island nation of Shura-Kokka. It's technically considered a protectorate of China but details are details. Though I don't have much info on the place, it's considered to be a bit like a modern-day Sparta with some elements you'd think that came out of a martial arts movie."
Present Mic and Eraserhead paled a bit, the latter was now wondering, did that wolf-haired guy Rouga originate from that Sparta-like nation? Questions for later, he thought.
"Wait, I'm seeing two coming to the ring," exclaimed Antonius. "OOOH! Looks like we're having our first handicap match of the day!"
"Wait, we are!" said Present Mic, he looked down at the ring for confirmation. He saw a red-haired boy and a steel-skinned boy walking their way to the ring, Mic put on his best announcer voice for this one.
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! WE ARE HAVING OUR FIRST TWO-ON-ONE MATCH! THEY'RE HARD AS STONE/STEEL AND RARIN' TO GO! THE ROCK-STEEL DUO: EIJIRO KIRISHIMA AND TETSUTETSU TETSUTETSU! TEAM METAL!"
Kirishima and Tetsutetsu both say: "Wait, Team Metal? That's awesome."
The other side of the ring lit up with music, fast-paced, but hard-hitting.
[Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN - "Stolz" - Leo Whitefang's Theme]
"HE'S KNOWN TO HE HARD-HEADED, FIGURATIVELY AND LITERALLY! AN EXPERT IN BOTH BARE-KNUCKLE BOXING AND MMA THAT EARNED HIS CHAMPIONSHIP THE FIRST TIME AROUND! COMING AT 180cm AND WEIGHING AT 80KG! PLEASE WELCOME THE LAUGHING HAMMER FROM NOTTINGHAM, DUNCANNN BAR CRUACH!"
Kirishima and Tetsutetsu got a good look at him: Duncan was definitely a welterweight, telling by his relatively lean build, but his fists tell a story of violence and also overcoming it too. The groomed beard was a manly touch in their eyes too.
"...AND FIGHT!"
The duo rushed right at him, sending out wide swings, but there's the thing: Duncan saw this coming and then assumed an X-cross hold, tightening his muscles, and now...
Sternshield!
"Aww shit!"
"Crap! That stings!"
Both boys felt their hands crack a bit, almost as if they hit a shield. The red-haired boy was then hit by a surprise overhand.
Kirishima was sent flying for a bit, holding his bleeding nose, and Tetsutetsu responded with a punch to the side of his face. However, it barely fazes him.
"My turn!"
A savage hook-shot was sent into Tetsutetsu, putting a dent into his face. He then responded with a fast roundhouse kick, causing him to bleed a bit.
The steel-headed kid activated his Quirk to lessen the damage. However, Bar Cruach wouldn't stop as he unloaded one of his famed combos, starting off with a push kick into the boy's center.
Burst Steel Vigor!
BAM!
BAM! WHAM!
SLAM! BAM!
A series of snap kicks, jabs, and straights were starting to crack Tetsutetsu's steel skin. It then devolved into a slugfest with the steel-skin kid striking Duncan in the face, interrupting his combo. Duncan responded with a clinch hold, knee-striking him in the midsection, and then an elbow in the face. Consecutively.
He was between a rock and a hard place.
It was constant pain, skin cracking at the seams, and his face was grabbed.
SLAM!
He was thrown down into the ground at a fast pace, causing a crater to form in the ground.
BAM!
Duncan got smacked at the head via Kirishima. The former re-engaged him, throwing compact jabs at Kirishima, but he was using his Quirk to lessen the damage.
Red Counter!
A counter-punch was sent into Duncan's face, the first step at turning the fight around, but he got grabbed and got thrown over the shoulder into the ground. The red-haired boy wouldn't stay down, he quickly got back up to re-engage!
Iron Emperor Hammer!
A fully backed downwards headbutt was sent into Kirishima's face, overwhelming his Quirk for a minute. The outcome wasn't pretty: Kirishima was bleeding some more, but he wasn't gonna tap out yet.
"I'm... not going... down."
"Hahaha! I like you kid, you got spirit!" responded Duncan. It would devolve into a slugfest but with a twist: Quirk-enhanced strikes. However, one thing surprised Kirishima. Duncan's skin turned gray, almost like steel.
"HOLY CRAP! THIS IS GONNA TURN INTO A PURE BRAWL!"
One thing, Duncan was aiming for vital points in Kirishima's body despite the brawler-like nature of his style. Kirishima, despite his spirit, was playing catch-up with the more experienced fighter.
Iron Emperor Spear!
A quick hook-shot into the liver slowed down Kirishima, but by a bit. The red-haired boy kept at it but got a headbutt for his troubles.
"Lethwei - Burmese Kickboxing. Though similar to Muay Thai, it's a bit rougher because of the use of headbutts," explained Antonius.
"Oh, no. Kirishima might be at his current limit now!" said a worried Present Mic.
The brawl kept happening, but Kirishima was slowing down more so.
BAM!
Kirishima threw his final punch but there was barely any impact to it. He then fell to his knee and to the ground, not a second after. Duncan saw that the steel-skinned kid wasn't getting up, just twitching. Then again, his head was lodged into the concrete.
"WINNER BY KO! DUNCAN BAR CRUACH!"
The audience was cheering on the European fighter, but he did something that gained favor with the crowd. He helped out Kirishima by carrying him, they also help get the steel-skinned kid out of the crater.
"Oww... man, where did you learn how to fight?"
"Through hardship and being diligent on landing my strikes. Bare-knuckle boxing and Lethwei being my main fortes."
"That's manly."
"Yes, I became an MMA fighter because I wanted to know if my chosen path in college was what I really wanted to go for. Keep in mind, I do like art every now and then, but my true passion is within the ring."
As they were conversing, they managed to get Tetsutetsu out of the crater, and the kid wondered what type of training did he undergo to become that strong.
"Diligence and also conviction when it comes to training and fighting, whether it's in the ring or on the streets."
The three managed to make it to the ring entrance.
The Infirmary
"That seemed a bit strange, he was able to turn his skin gray... but for a brief moment," said Izuku to no one.
"Almost like steel, similar to that student from 1-B. Something seems strange though, all those strikes he was able to deliver, all without a Quirk to enhance them," Todoroki said, analyzing the fight.
"Hmm... these pro fighters are stronger than I actually thought."
1-A Section
"This is a bit... embarrassing," said Yaoyorozu. "We are getting beaten... by these... these brutes!"
Some of 1-A had to face-palm a bit, especially Ojiro and Sato's starting to follow too.
"Yaomomo, I get it. But you don't need to say it more than once," said Jiro, clutching that hurt arm of hers. "They're not brutes either, that fighter Nebel gave me some sound advice actually."
"Who wants to go up next?" said Kokotsu, interrupting the convo for a bit. "If anything, we have an advantage: they don't know our Quirks but it's the same thing vice versa."
Some of the 1-A sections were debating over this now... some being split.
1-B Section
"He was overpowered, that brute was smarter than he let on," said Monoma.
"I can't argue that, I'm not sure if I can stand against these guys," stated a jet-black student. One of the other students was stewing a bit, a mantis-like student wanted to get on this, he felt the need to turn this around.
Fighters' Section
"That was some good fighting, Duncan," said the masked wrestler. "I also like your sportsmanship too, amigo."
"If you ask me, these guys have heart, enough to be both heroes and fighters," Duncan responded. "A bit of refinement in their combat skills is what's needed, no, REQUIRED."
Kirishima and Tetsutetsu were a bit in awe, especially realizing the gap between them and the professional fighters in this room. The big question was this, who's next up?
"Honestly, I'll go. I was fairly busy training my new student, it's an excuse for me to knock off more of my rust."
The two look at the source: a fairly tall man, early to mid-20s, platinum-grey hair, conventionally handsome, and wearing a skinny hoodie with ripped sleeves.
"Rouga, I'll go," said a young female voice.
"Wait, you sure?"
"Oh, definitely. Besides, I get the feeling someone in that section wants to pay us back."
"Wait-oh. Oh, I understand perfectly."
As Rouga gave her answer, a raven-haired woman in MMA short with a vampire motif on them, plus her hair in a ponytail, but her darkened eyes are what made her stand out.
"Knock 'em out, Carmilla."
Announcers' Booth
"Wait, her?!" said Aizawa.
"Yup, I did not expect her. Though, it's gonna be interesting," said Antonius. "Ready, Present Mic?"
"Oh, yeah!" exclaimed Mic as he cracked his fingers.
"SHE IS KNOWN AS THE BLOOD REAPER OF ROMANIA! PEOPLE FEAR HER! GUYS ADORE HER! THE ELDEST SCION OF THE VARCOLAC CLAN! GIVE IT UP FOR THE BLOOD QUEEN HERSELF, CARRRRMILAAAAA!"
Carmilla came into the ring as soon as her music was blasting.
[Blazblue Central Fiction OST - "Walpurgisnacht" - Phantom's Theme]
She walked slowly, shaking off some jitters, and throwing some kicks.
"I think that's a good intro as any."
1-A Section
As soon as that metal music intro was blaring, Yaoyorozu tried to ignore it, but when seeing Carmilla... something awoke in her. She walked towards her with a purpose: pay her back for defiling the image of a hero. The ideal she wants to uphold.
"Wait... wait! Carmilla? The same heroine that defeated the Bloodpyke Gang? The same one who was able to go toe-to-toe with Miruko in a fight for charity?!" said a concerned Ojiro.
If Yaoyorozu heard it, she likely ignored it. She utilized her Quirk to generate a pair of MMA gloves, then pound them together, giving off the sign that she's ready to fight.
"I'll turn this around and most of all, dominate that vampiric witch."
"OOH! THIS IS A SURPRISE! THE VICE REPRESENTATIVE OF 1-A HERSELF COMING ONTO THE BATTLEFIELD! GIVE IT UP FOR MOMO YAOOYOROZU!"
Yaoyorozu took a half-guard stance: rear hand near her cheek while the other hand is low, ready to strike.
Carmilla took the drop-stance as her response.
They both stared with intent, ready to strike like cobras.
"AT THE READY... AND... FIGHT!"
Author's Note: Duncan is based on Robert Baratheon [and his ancestor, Lyonel] from A Song of Fire and Ice with the stag motif, but also a bit of Dan Hardy if he won the welterweight title against an Expy of Georges St. Pierre. His name is composed of the meanings of 'dark warrior', 'son of' [Bar], 'steel'.
The songs linked above belong to Arc System Works and its composers.
Thunder Blink - An uppercut but it's done as a surprise attack. Nebel uses this after she re-appears to an opponent. Its original name would be Raishun.
Ghostbound - The Quirk-enhanced German suplex but it's done after the user re-appears to an opponent. It's done twice to knock down an opponent.
Single Leg Takedown - It involves taking a leg with both hands and forcing them down to the ground. It's often seen in BJJ, Judo, and other forms of grappling.
Apex Combat Championship - A US-only MMA promotion that allows full-on Quirk usage, but the difference? Only within reason. They usually follow weight classes, but they have inter-promotion tourneys occasionally with rivals. It's based on the UFC.
Burst Steel Vigor - A punching combo that starts off with a push kick, the opponent is then pummeled to a pulp with a series of jabs, straights, and snap kicks. Its original name would be Bakukokyo.
Sternshield - A defensive pose in which the user's skin briefly turns gray, almost like steel to an extent, shrugging off incoming attacks. Its original name is Genjun in Japanese.
Heartbeat Jab - A fast jab after a mini-barrage of vibration-enhanced shocks to the opponent.
Iron Emperor Hammer - A fully-powered downwards headbutt that shatters the opponent's guard efficiently. Its name is Tetteitsui. The headbutt is a well-known move in Lethwei.
Iron Emperor Spear - A hook punch into the liver that's utilized more as a surprise attack while in a combo. Its original name is Tetteiso.
Red Counter - A strong punch that happens after being hit at close-range.
Drop Stance - The fighter squats on one leg until said thigh is parallel to the ground and the other leg is fully extended to the side. Both feet are parallel and need to be facing forward. Its other names are 'taming the tiger stance' [Fu Hu Bu] or 'flat stance' [Pu Bu].
Stay tuned for the next chapter!
