Yay, quick update! I really made sure to squeeze this in because today's a very special day for me. It's my 8th Wicked anniversary! Wow, time flies.
Thanks for the reviews! *hearts* And I love how all of you really saw how two-way the whole arguing between them was even though it was written in Elphaba's perspective (more on this soon *wink*).
Day 527
September, 2019
"Av, shut up. You're going to wake him!"
"What? I'm just saying, it's kinda funny. Falling from a tree is like…you know…what you see in the movies! Not real life!"
"Avaric!"
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Tiggular. We know how he can be sometimes…"
"It's alright."
"Av, we're here to help him, not laugh at him!"
"Okay, okay! Geez! For a small person, you hit hard, G…Ouch!"
"You deserved it."
"Fine, I surrender! At least Crope here knows how to have a little fun."
"What? No. Don't drag me into this."
"Well, at least green girl knows how to keep up."
"Shut up!"
Fiyero stirred as he gradually opened his eyes. "H-hey guys, what are you all whispering about?" he said, his voice heavy with sleep.
"Fiyero!" they screamed in unison.
"Ah, easy on the volume, please," he replied, chuckling lightly. He kind of missed this; it's been a while since he had a lot of visitors in his room. And he missed his friends. It comforted him to see that despite the many years they haven't been together, some things just never change.
He rubbed his eyes with his uninjured hand, trying to clear his vision. Under the dim light of his hospital room, he saw four people hovering over his bed and looking at him with wide eyes—Galinda, Crope, Avaric, and his mother. Then as his vision became clearer, he saw a lone figure silently sitting behind the expectant faces.
"How are you feeling, dear?" his mother asked as she moved to sit beside him and took his hand in hers.
"Great," he said and he pushed himself to a sitting position. "Never better." he continued with a smile. Then he turned to face his group of friends. "What are we up to?" he asked.
Galinda perked up and she bounced all the way to the side of the bed opposite his mother. He wondered where she gets all of her energy from.
"We're here to help you!" she squealed.
He cringed. "Volume, Glin," he reminded her.
"Oh, sorry!" she responded. Then her voice dropped to a whisper, "We're here to help you!"
"With what?" Fiyero asked.
"Well…" Galinda started. "actually-it-was-Elphie's-idea-so-she-called-me-one-night-and-we-decided-to-ask-everyone-if-they-could-come-visit-and-of-course-we-all-agreed-because-I-mean-it's-you!-how-could-we-say-no!-but-Boq-Milla-Phannee-and-Tibbett-said-they're-caught-up-with-something-so-they-can't-come-but-they-send-they're-best-wishes-and-so-me-Crope-and-Av-came-here-with-Elphie-to-help-you-remember-your-memories!" Galinda finished with a beaming smile.
Fiyero nodded with a wan smile. For a moment he tried to pretend he understood, but ultimately, he gave up. "Yeah, I got none of that. Summary please?"
Galinda pouted and moved aside as Crope stepped forward.
"The doctor said you're recovering well, and it would be nice if we slowly started interviewing you to see what your latest memories are."
"Oh, today's the day?" Fiyero asked, and his eyes grew in astonishment and excitement. Then his expression contorted. "Wait," he said. "Does this mean I'll be taking a quiz or something?" he asked, suddenly deflating.
"Righty-o, our dearest Yero!" Avaric confirmed, earning himself a scowl from the other two friends. "What?" the tall blonde exclaimed. And his friends' scowls grew stronger. "Fine, I'll just sit with greenie over here," he resolved, as he walked backward and sat beside Elphaba at the bench beside the window. "Sup, green bean?"
Fiyero noticed how Elphaba weakly hung her head and ignored Avaric's comment. She stared at her hands and didn't look up at any sound. He wondered what she was thinking.
It took a while before Fiyero fully recognized her when his eye bandages were permanently removed. When he woke up, all he could think of was her. But he couldn't remember a single thing about her aside from the fact that he wanted to see her. He couldn't remember what she looked like, what her usual scent was, what she liked, and what she did for a living. He couldn't remember the times they spent together. But whenever she was around, he felt a ticklish feeling at the bottom of his stomach. And whenever she was gone, he felt like something was missing. He knew they were together, but he couldn't remember her. And he didn't know why.
"Are you alright, Yero?" his mother asked with concern in her eyes. "Don't worry, it's not a real quiz. There won't be a grade," she continued, smiling.
"Are you ready?" Galinda asked, excitedly.
"Don't rush him, Glin," Crope said as he nudged the bubbly blonde's elbow.
"No, it's alright. I'm ready," Fiyero said. "What's the first question?"
Galinda squealed. "Okay," she said and she took deep breaths as if she was trying to get ready for a marathon. She turned and with sudden fierceness, she leaned against his bed and asked the first question. "Question number one," she started. "What color was I wearing to our first dance at the OzDust?"
"Galinda!" Crope exclaimed, exasperatedly.
"Uhh…pink?" Fiyero guessed.
"It was blue!" Galinda responded, suddenly flustered. "This was going to be harder than I thought," she said, with beads of tears in her eyes.
"Galinda, calm down!" Crope said. But the bouncy blonde already rushed to sit on the bench with Avaric and Elphaba, giving up.
And just like that, Crope began the interview, while Galinda and Avaric inserted a few questions here and there—about their undergraduate endeavors. Amelia also asked a few questions about his childhood. After a while, it seemed Fiyero was able to remember everything to the tee, and everyone was comforted and hopeful.
"I guess we're good for today," Crope declared with a huge grin. "Good job, Yero!"
"Thanks guys," Fiyero replied albeit tiredly.
"They'll see you again next week, dear," his mother said, with a gentle smile and a pat on his uninjured hand.
Fiyero smiled. But then he suddenly remembered something—Elphaba was silent the whole visit.
"Wait," he said. "Uhm…I—I didn't get to hear from Fae today."
Everyone turned their eyes to the green girl packing her bag by the window, and she stilled.
"Do you have any questions you want to ask, Elphaba?" Crope asked.
The green girl silently shook her head.
"It's alright, Elphie! Any question would do," Galinda encouraged.
"Yeah, let's get at it, froggie," Avaric quipped, earning himself another round of scowls from the others. And he raised his hands in surrender.
"Elphaba?" Fiyero asked.
There was a short pause, and everyone anxiously waited for the green girl's response. After a few minutes Fiyero thought she wouldn't speak. But just as he was about to resolve the question and bid them farewell, Elphaba spoke—so softly he almost didn't catch it.
"Do you remember how you first found me here in the city?"
He looked up and he saw her looking at him, wide-eyed but—he wasn't sure how to describe it—sad? For a moment, time seemed to stop; yet the clock continued to click. And words seemed to elude him.
He couldn't remember.
Did anyone get the pink dress/blue dress reference I put in? ;)
