Glad that reference was so easily understood! Haha. I love reference spotting (as Fae's Flower also mentioned lol).

Day 328

January 2019

Elphaba's phone rang as she waited for him to pick up.

*beep*

"Hello?"

"Hey, what time will you be here? I've been waiting since—"

(Curses)

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, it's just—Uhm…ugh. It slipped my mind…"

"Oh."

"I have a lot of work to finish right now…There's this huge deal coming up with a major client and—"

"It's okay."

"Look, I know I promised, and I'm really sorry. I'll try to work as fast as I can and I'll try to get there as soon as—"

"No, it's okay!"

"No, Fae. It's your birthday. I'll work as fast as I can."

"No, no. It's okay! Take your time. I never cared much about this day, anyway…"

"No—(muffled voices). Wait, uhm. Fae, can you hold on for a minute?"

"Alright."

She waited for what seemed like five minutes.

"Hello?"

Ten minutes? She couldn't bring herself to watch the clock, as if it lied everytime she checked the time. She wanted to believe it had only been two minutes.

Was she supposed to hang up now?

"Uhm, Yero?"

Silence.

"Yero? Hello?"

Twelve minutes. Lies.

Maybe she should just call again... Or wait for him to call her?

"Hello?"

Thirteen minutes.

Maybe she could wait until it hit fifteen. Then, she'll hang up and wait for his call.

Thirteen minutes, forty seconds.

Why was this getting harder?

Fourteen minutes, forty-seven seconds.

The red button glowed just as she was about to press it.

(Shuffling noises)

"Hello? Fae—"

"Yero!"

"—Are you still there?"

"Yeah, hi. Uhm, if you're working—"

"No, no. Sorry I took so long—"

"It's alright. I understand—"

"—It's just Sarima came in and—"

"Oh, Sarima?"

A pause.

"What do you mean?"

"What? I didn't mean anything."

"No, you said her name like it was a bad thing."

"I didn't! I just—You said she was there."

"Yeah, she was here. To give me some papers for the proposal we're making. Why is that a bad thing?"

"I never said it was a bad thing! I was just acknowledging her—"

"Wow, you were acknowledging her."

"What?"

"Look, Fae. Sarima's a really nice person. If you at least try to get to know her—"

"What? I never said she was a bad person!"

"Yeah, yet you said her name like it tasted bad in your mouth. Like you do every time I bring her up!"

"No, I don't!"

"Are you jealous of her?"

"I'm not!"

"Fae, tell me the truth—"

"I'm not! Why are you insisting that I am?"

"Because you react so badly every time she's brought up! I know you, Fae. You're not very good at acting."

"I'm not jealous of her!"

"Yeah, sure."

"Oh, so you're mad at me now?"

"She's my friend! Look, I get along with all of your friends. Why can't you get along with mine?"

"Well for one, I barely have friends. So that's hardly a challenge."

"Oh come on, Fae. You know that's not what—"

"—And two, I do get along with your friends! But it's not like any of them care for me, anyway—"

"Hey, that's not true!"

"—And three, at least my friends don't constantly give me the stink eye and flirt with you the moment they see you!"

"How many times do I have to tell you that she's not flirting with me?!"

"Yero, in the many years you've hooked up with a bunch of different women, I can't believe you can still be this dense."

"Sarima's not flirting with me!"

"Okay."

"Oh, come on, Fae."

"What? I just said 'okay'!"

"(Sigh)"

Silence.

"Look, Sarima's just trying to do her job, okay? And she's doing really well for a junior…she's really climbing up—"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"What?"

"Oh really now?"

"What are you saying?"

"Whatever, Fiyero, it's not like this is the first time you—"

"Oh no, not this again! Stop putting words in my mouth!"

"That's just a new low for you."

"I didn't mean anything!"

"Yeah, sure."

Silence.

"Fae? Hello?"

She couldn't speak anymore.

"Fae?"

"I'm still here."

"Elphaba, you know I love you, right?"

She didn't know what to say.

"Hello?"

"It's getting late. Maybe you shouldn't drop by anymore."

"Fae, I'm sorry. You know when my mouth just starts to move on its own, right?"

She opened her mouth but nothing came out; words seemed to elude her.

"(Sigh) I promise I'll make it up to you."

Silence.

"I love you, Fae."

A pause.

"Goodnight, Fiyero."

*beep*

For a moment, time seemed to stop; yet the clock continued to tick. And she couldn't stop the surge of different emotions erupting from her chest, her mind—from every inch of her body. Her fingers tingled and her arms shook with suppressed disappointment.

The pasta on the stove had long gone cold, and the smell of a slowly burning pie filled the room—one that she was reheating for the third time. The apartment was silent except for the sound of her own breathing and the clock on the kitchen wall.

She watched as it ticked away.

Wow, that escalated quickly! But before we get mad, remember that this was written from Elphie's perspective ;)
