Finally it had come for the day that they would meet the sender of the letter from Hogwarts. Harry himself was beyond nervous but Brooklyn had been assuring him it was probably better than living here at the Dursleys.
Over the course of yesterday they had gone through the list of school items which included cauldrons, wands, and such. Brooklyn himself was pretty fascinated by all the stuff a wizard would need though one notice said first years were not allowed their own brooms. At least until Harry could get one he could just glide him around the school. They also read through the following book titles as well:
History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them by Newt Scamander
The Standard Book Of Spells Grade 1 by Miranda Goshawk
A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi by Phyllida Spore
Brooklyn himself was looking forward to reading these books with Harry, wondering if this Newt had ever encountered gargoyles that were still alive back then. Harry himself had been feeling excited to get his books as Brooklyn and him both went back to the shack where Brooklyn first lived in, a little cautious about who would show up from this supposed Hogwarts, sitting down, Brooklyn holding Harry close to him while they continued reading through the letter.
Harry trembled, hoping this all wasn't some kind of scam like what Brooklyn wrote in their reply. "Do you really think someone will come?" He asked, Brooklyn baring his teeth a little. "If it really is some sort of sick joke, I swear, I'll rip—."
The two at that moment however felt the ground shake just a little bit, Brooklyn turning about, his eyes glowing and saw the strangest sight he had ever witnessed; a large man possibly bigger than Goliath coming up on the horizon.
Harry instantly quickly hid behind Brooklyn while Brook took in the man's appearance. Was he even a normal human? The man had a big scratchy beard with beady black eyes, wearing a large moleskin with overcoat and boots the size of baby seals. His eyes twinkled when spotting Harry behind Brooklyn, but were also surprised at the sight of the red gargoyle.
The man tilted his head while he and Brooklyn gazed at each other, Brooklyn keeping his ears flat on his forehead. The giant eventually chuckled at how protective the creature he realized was a gargoyle was being towards the boy. "Easy there, youngin'. I don't want to hurt ye both."
Brooklyn's shoulders felt like they were relaxing but still kept up his guard, mostly from how big the man was. "Who are you?" Brooklyn demanded.
Sitting down with them, the man smiled again. "The name's Rubeus Harris, Keeper of the Keys at Hogwarts. And this here is Harry Potter, am I right?"
Harry peeked out from behind Brooklyn but just a little bit, seeing now that Hagrid wasn't going to hurt them. He nods slowly, Brooklyn keeping Harry in front of him now but his hands were gripping his shoulders protectively. From the sound of Hagrid's tone, he had a feeling this man had no ill intentions. "Are you the one who had sent the letter?" He questioned.
Hagrid shakes his head. "That would be what McGonagall does. And she would be shocked in learnin' a gargoyle had been protecting young Harry here." He pointed out, making Brooklyn blink, astonished that Hagrid actually knew what he was while Hagrid gave Harry a box in which after Harry opened it revealed a chocolate cake with pink icing and green letters that said happee birthday Harry. The spelling of the word happy made Brooklyn chuckle but still had questions.
"How did you know that Harry was a wizard? And where did that even come from?" He demanded, making Hagrid raise his hand, his smile still there. "I'll answer yer questions, jus' not here. We'll be goin' to Diagon Alley soon to get his supplies. But also I'm excited that you're one of the few gargoyles left. Do ye know any others like ye around?"
Brooklyn tensed up, feeling his eyes sting from remembering when he was pulled away from his own time by Oberon. "I-I really don't want to talk about it. It's a long story." He said in a shaky tone, Hagrid's face softening from noticing the small tears beginning to form, putting a pretty large hand on his shoulder. "Ye don't have to tell me now but we should get goin' to Diagon Alley for Harry's supplies." He said while Harry tried some of his birthday cake, now looking excited again.
However the red gargoyle was still rather nervous about how the people at Hogwarts would accept him. "Hagrid, how do we know that Hogwarts wouldn't try kicking me out because of me being a gargoyle? Our clan already struggles with humans not accepting us enough as it is." He said, with Harry looking at him in sympathy and holding his hand. "Yeah. If he can't go with me, then I won't go!" Harry declared boldly.
Hagrid glanced back and forth at the two of them, admiring Harry's relationship with Brooklyn but knew that he couldn't say no. "I'm sure Dumbledore will justify for ye to stay at Hogwarts too. He's been the best Headmaster of Hogwarts the school had ever seen and is the most understanding."
Brooklyn eventually felt his shoulders relax from those words, before eventually nodding. "Ok. If you say so. It will be better than staying at the Dursleys anyway." He said, with Harry agreeing with him.
Hagrid nods once, inside sensing something special within Brooklyn in which he could notice how much Harry now sees him as family. "We should get goin' now." He said, pulling out another boot that was rather old looking. "Do you have any luggage Harry?" Harry shakes his head, not having much except the clothes he wore. Hagrid frowned, realizing the Dursleys weren't taking care of him like he expected, gesturing to the two to gather around the boot.
Brook and Harry stared at it, Brooklyn the most confused. "What's with that old shoe?" He asked in suspicion, making Hagrid chuckle at his question.
"It's called a Portkey, can transport you pretty much anywhere. We jus' need to use particular items Muggles (Non-wizards" he explained to Brooklyn's tilted face of confusion.) "Muggles wouldn't think to pick up something like a dirty ol' boot. I would teleport ye to London myself but... I am not allowed to use magic since I was expelled in me third year."
The beaked male raised his brow. "How come?" He asked. Hagrid however didn't answer his question as he instructed him and Harry to take the boot, and before Brooklyn could brace himself, felt the boot rising from the ground, spinning them in the air into a swirl of color. Just watching everything around him made Brooklyn nauseous, shutting his eyes until soon the Portkey landed them in a London alleyway, Brooklyn falling on his bottom with Harry right on top of him, both grunting with Hagrid easily landing on the ground with his feet, laughing. "A little rough fer first timers, but takes some getting used to. Anyway, welcome to London!"
Noises of the city made Brooklyn snap out of his dizziness, looking around after leaving the alleyway in awe, seeing that it was much bigger than Manhattan. He even spotted the famous Ferris wheel from afar which was larger than ones in regular fairs, wishing he and Harry could try it out but Hagrid said they didn't want to draw too much attention to the Muggles, Brooklyn now thinking about how much his clan would've loved seeing London if they were here with him.
While walking towards where Hagrid would bring them to Diagon Alley, Brooklyn thought he spotted a store calledInto the Mystic, but figured his eyes were playing tricks, recalling how Goliath had met gargoyles here. Perhaps he was just still feeling dizzy from the Portkey journey. Soon Hagrid brought them to a building in between a hamburger restaurant and a bookstore, and at first Brooklyn couldn't see anything.
"Hagrid, what are we looking at?" He asked in suspicion, until eventually to his surprise; the building had a sign show up on it above called The Leaky Cauldron. Brooklyn felt his breath leave him in amazement, knowing this was his first step into the magical world of wizards. But inside, he wondered if he would ever go home, giving a little sigh of sadness, then felt Harry's hand grasp his own, looking down at his little friend. "Hey, things will be ok Brook. We're pretty much brothers now, and we'll find a way to get you home together."
From Harry's words, it made Brooklyn grin, his ears perking up, nodding slightly as Hagrid opened up the doors, revealing a rather dingy looking pub inside. Brooklyn stared around at it, seeing people sitting down at their tables either drinking or smoking. One wizard eyed Brooklyn while drawing a long pipe, making Brook edge away from the guy, not trusting a single person in this place. But then he felt others looking at him with small revulsion or even fear, his discomfort growing. Without his clan, Brooklyn now felt like a bigger outcast among humans than ever.
Hagrid had noticed, growling at them all in the pub. "Listen up yeh all. Brooklyn isn't a danger te anyone in this place. He is with me an' Harry Potter. Any of you lot dare lay a hand on Brooklyn and ye shall answer to me!"
The rest of the pub soon looked scared of Hagrid's imposing stare, glancing away quickly and going back to their own businesses. Brooklyn gave Hagrid a grateful grin, despite not having known him long, he knew that Hagrid would have his back.
However though after Hagrid mentioned the name, Harry Potter, a few wizards and witches eventually too got up to greet Harry. One witch named Doris Crockford had even apologized to Brooklyn for their rudeness, Brooklyn a little flustered but accepted her handshake. Another wizard named Dedalus shook Harry's hand rather vigorously.
Harry suddenly recognized him. "I've seen you before!" He exclaimed, making Brooklyn surprised. "You bowed to me once in a shop." That caused Dedalus to look a little too excited. "He remembers! Did you hear that? He remembers me!" Eventually the hand shaking got a little too much for Harry so Brooklyn managed to wave a lot of them off, holding Harry to himself again.
A nervous looking young man had also approached, wearing a large purple turban and wringing his hands, face twitching while trying to smile. Brooklyn instantly caught a very funny smell coming from the turban, wrinkling his nose a bit but decided against saying anything Hagrid greeted him. "Professor Quirrell! Harry, Professor Quirrell will be one of your teachers at Hogwarts. And Quirrell, this is Harry's best friend Brooklyn."
Quirrell eyed Brooklyn who had a look of fear in his eyes. Brooklyn had expected that but there was something more to the fear in them as he spoke. "P-P-Potter... B-Brooklyn. C-Can't tell you how pleased I am to meet you." He stuttered. Harry nods back at him. "What sort of magic do you teach?"
"D-D-Defense Against the D-D-Dark Arts." He muttered, though to Brooklyn the man clearly didn't want to think about it. "N-Not that you n-need it eh, P-Potter?" Quirrell laughed, his eyes still twitching while shifting over to Brooklyn. "Y-You'll be getting all your equipment, I suppose? I've g-got to p-pick up a new b-book on vampires, m-myself." He revealed, looking like he wanted to do anything else than that.
Hagrid soon gestured to Harry and Brooklyn to follow him to enter Diagon Alley. "Must get on—lots ter buy."
Brooklyn bows a little to Quirrell. "Nice to meet you." He said, making Quirrell wince just from him speaking while watching the duo follow the half giant who grinned at them both. "Yer quite famous Harry. Didn't ye know?"
Harry shakes his head. "No. Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia haven't really told me about the wizarding world at all." He said sadly, Brooklyn tensing as Hagrid looked furious, but decided to save his rage for later on when approaching a brick wall int he back room. Brooklyn eventually had more questions.
"What about that Quirrell guy? Is he always that twitchy?" He asked curiously, Hagrid nodding. "Yeah, for sure, poor bloke. Brilliant mind. He was fine while he wasstudyin' outta books but then he took a year off to get some first hand experience... they say he met a vampires in the Black Forest, and there was a nasty bit of trouble with a hag—never been the same since. Scared of the students, scared of his own subject. Probably thinks yer a vampire too."
The red gargoyle frowned from those words. He was already struggling to comprehend the reality of Vampires but didn't quite believe the story. There must have been more. Hagrid kept rummaging for his umbrella until pulling out a pink one, studying the bricks. "Three up, two across..." He muttered. "Stand back ye two."
Harry and Brooklyn stood back together as Hagrid tapped the wall three times, wondering what will happen until to Brooklyn's awe; saw the brick in the middle wriggle and a small hole showed. It grew wider and wider until they soon faced an archway big enough for both Brooklyn and Hagrid to walk through, Brooklyn's jaw now dropping at the sight of a whole cobbled street that did many twists and turns.
Hagrid chuckles down at their expressions. "Welcome, Harry and Brooklyn, to Diagon Alley." He said, gesturing with his hand.
Brook felt like he needed several more eyes, staring in disbelief at the many shops, having looked back once and saw the hole turning back into a stone wall before continuing, hoping he didn't get lost. The sun was nice and bright from above that Brooklyn still appreciated to see since he would have been stone by now, watching many witches and wizards running about doing their shopping, spotting a tower of cauldrons by one store that said:Cauldrons—All Sizes—Copper, Brass, Pewter, Silver, Self Stirring—Collapsable.
"Harry'll need one of those." Hagrid says, noticing Brooklyn eyeing the cauldron store. The trio continued their trek through the large crowds and at one moment Brooklyn thought he saw a plump witch with bright red hair at an apothecary muttering "Dragon liver, sixteen sickles an ounce, they're mad..."
Hooting eventually startled Brooklyn next, glancing over at what looked like an owl store called Eeylops Owl Emporium. He eyed a handsome looking Great Horned owl in its cage, giving off little hoot noises while ruffling its feathers, feeling inside he could probably enjoy having an owl.
Harry and Brooklyn too heard a kid at a sports store pointing at a shiny looking broom in the display. "Look, the new Nimbus Two Thousand—fastest ever—." The friends saw the shining wooden handle and how sleek it was, Brooklyn amazed at how brooms could now be made like this.
Finally, Hagrid pointed towards a towering marble building which happened to be... "Gringotts. Where you'll be gettin' your money that yer parents left Harry." Hagrid proudly announced, Brooklyn leaning his head back to look up high, and even saw a little creature by the bronze door. "Yeah, that's a goblin." Hagrid murmured softly while the three went up to the doorway. The Goblin was definitely smaller than both Harry and Brooklyn who grinned with his pointed teeth, bowing them inside. For the second pair of doors, this read:
Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed
For those who take, but do not earn
Must pay most dearly in their turn
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours
Thief, you have been warned
Of finding more than treasure there.
Brooklyn felt a small shiver down his spine at the last line there. "Charming." He mumbled.
Hagrid had a serious look about him. "Yeh'd be mad to try and rob Gringotts lads. Not wise to steal from Goblins."
Harry and Brooklyn nodded in unison as they soon finally saw what lay inside the silver doors from another pair of goblins, revealing a vast marble hall about a hundred more goblins were sitting on high stools behind a long counter, scribbling in large ledgers, weighing coins in brass scales, examining precious stones through eyeglasses. Brooklyn watched in awe as a goblin pushed a ruby bigger than him by in a cart, wondering where they found a gem that size.
They approached the front desk as Hagrid greeted the goblin in charge. "Morning." He said. "We've come ter take some money outta Mr. Harry Potter's safe."
The goblin noticed Brooklyn, glaring down. "And is he accompanying you?" Hagrid nods. "Yes, he promises not to take anything that ain't his." He claimed, Brooklyn nodding nervously, his wings twitching, as the Goblin eventually nods slowly. "You have Mr. Harry Potter's key sir?"
Hagrid rummaged through his many coat pockets, even pulling out a live mouse at one point that startled Brooklyn until finally he found a small key. The goblin studied it carefully before he eventually accepts. "That seems to be in order."
Brooklyn inclined his ears when hearing Hagrid whisper to him now. "An' I've also got a letter from Professor Dumbledore." Hagrid whispered, giving a sealed letter to the goblin. "It's about You-Know-What in vault 713."
Harry and Brooklyn looked at one another in confusion while the Goblin read the letter. "Very well. I will have someone take the three of you down to both vaults. Griphook!"
Brooklyn looked around at the sight of another goblin who had them follow him to the carts which led to a cave like underground. Brooklyn got into the cart rather nervously, Harry with him as he asked Hagrid what was in the vault but Hagrid wouldn't say what it was, Griphook started up the cart after managing to get Hagrid in somehow, the cart zipping away on it's journey.
The wind whistled past Brooklyn's ears who tensed up, gripping the edge of his seat from how quickly the cart turned like on a roller coaster. He had a hard time talking with anybody while feeling his stomach turning inside out, shutting his eyes until the ride was almost over, the cart going deeper and deeper which had the air get a little bit colder. When peeking his eyes open, he saw Hagrid was now going a bit green, Harry noticing Brooklyn being nervous, holding Brooklyn's hand.
Soon the cart came to a complete stop beside a small passage wall, Brooklyn clambering out, feeling a little dizzy but not as dizzy as Hagrid. Griphook guided them to the door and unlocked it with the key, revealing something that made Harry open eyed; a vault full of gold coins, columns of silver, and piles of bronze ones. Hagrid smiled down at the surprised looks on Brook and Harry's faces. "All yours Harry."
Brooklyn had to hide a chuckle from Harry's over excited look of awe on his face, as Hagrid helped gathered up some of the coins for him but left the rest to be protected. Hagrid also had explained what the coins were which were called Galleons, Sickles, and Knuts. Brook wished he could bring some of these coins home to show Xanatos who would have been most interested. Griphook gestured to them to get back into the cart, Brooklyn reluctantly climbing back in. "Vault 713 now please, and can we go more slowly?" Hagrid asks with Griphook shaking his head. "One speed only." And with that, Brooklyn held onto the cart rather tight again as it went off, going even deeper underground.
The air got even colder the further they went, Brooklyn shivering lightly, Harry noticing. "Brooklyn, are you really ok?" Brooklyn nods but he still shivered. "F-Fine, just a little bit uncomfortable with cold air is all." He mumbled, wrapping himself up with his wings until the cart finally came to a halt in front of the vault.
But to his surprise; the vault had no keyhole as Griphook advised them to stay back with a look of importance on his face, sliding his finger along the door which simply melted away. Brooklyn was amazed that some vaults would have this type of no key security. Griphook then gave Brooklyn a little sneer. "If anyone but a Gringotts goblin tried that, they'd be sucked through the door and trapped in there."
Hearing that made Brooklyn swallow. "How often do you check if anybody is inside?" Harry asked nervously.
Griphook's smile spread further. "About once every ten years." Brooklyn was even more nervous after that, not wanting to be stuck in a vault in a cold underground, rubbing his shoulders as Hagrid went in to grab what was in the vault. Unfortunately it wasn't anything all that special; just a grubby little package Hagrid scooped up, looking over at them, hiding the package in his coat rather quickly. "C'mon, back in this infernal cart, and don't talk to me on the way back, it's best if I keep me mouth shut." said Hagrid, much to Brooklyn's agreement, always feeling like he was gonna throw up in this cart and the cold air didn't help.
Finally after one last speedy and sickly cart ride, Brooklyn welcomed the warm daylight outside of Gringotts but before he left, one goblin had halted him for a moment. "I'd best advise you to watch your back gargoyle, for some undesirables out there might want... to take a talon or two." He said vaguely, making Brooklyn's skin tingle in nerves, wanting to leave as quick as possible, wondering what the goblin meant. "Uh huh, sure. Nice bank by the way." He complimented quickly, rushing out the door with Hagrid and Harry, breathing in the sunny air, excited to explore even more of Diagon Alley now.
Had to cut this segment short because the Diagon Alley chapter in the book is almost 10 pages long (Will have to count again) so the next one will be of him and Harry having adventures in the shops, getting a wand, and Brooklyn finding out that he has Lily's protection shield around him now so he and Harry decide to live in the Leaky Cauldron.
