Third person view
"Leaving. We're leaving" Hiccup said walking into the cove with a large basket over his shoulder and a sad look on his face.
"Let's pack up. Looks like you and I are taking a little vacation... Forever" he said looking around for Toothless before setting down the basket and opening it up to make sure everything was inside.
He was sad about leaving his brother like this but knew it was for the best. He probably wouldn't accept Hiccup and his new best friend if he revealed himself to him and his father definitely wouldn't.
However as he stood up, he was surprised to see Astrid sitting on the large rock he had been kneeling in front of, sharpening her axe.
"Ah! What the-" Hiccup said jumping and stumbling back before he composed himself.
"What uh, what are you doing here?" He asked slightly looking around for Toothless as Astrid threw away the smaller rock she had been using to sharpen her axe before letting it glisten in the sunlight.
"I wanna know what's going on" she said before jumping down, the axe still in hand.
"No one just gets as good as you do. Especially you" she sneered walking towards him as he walked backwards.
"Start talking! Are you training with someone?" She asked as Hiccup stuttered.
"I know it's not your brother, he was too busy being acting chief, so is it someone else? It better not involve this?" She said grabbing his harness and pulling on it.
"I-I know this, looks really bad but you see this is uh-" Hiccup was cut off as there was a crash from the other side of the cove and Astrid, who still had a hold of him, gasped and tensed up which sent Hiccup to the ground.
He groaned but saw Astrid was making her way towards the sounds, which could only be one thing.
"Uh, you're right! You're right, you're right. I-I-I I'm through with the lies" he said walking alongside her trying to get her to stop however it wasn't working.
"I've been making... Outfits! So you got me. It's time everyone knew" he said grabbing her hand and placing it on his shirt making her grab it.
"Drag me back, go ahead. Here we g-oooh!" He yelled as Astrid twisted his arm, taking him to the ground again.
"Why would you do that?!" He asked only to get kicked by the girl.
"That's for the lies" she said before dropping the axe handle first onto his stomach which bounced back up into her hand.
"And that's... For everything else" she added before a roar echoed through the area.
"Oh man" Hiccup muttered as Astrid readied herself and took a few steps towards the noise. She then saw Toothless at the same time he saw her.
She gasped and tackled Hiccup, who had gotten up, back to the ground.
"Get down!" she yelled as Toothless charged forwards with a roar, seeing his human companion tackled to the ground.
"Run! Run!" Astrid yelled rolling off him and getting to her feet with her axe at the ready, knowing the dragon had spotted them.
However as she swung her axe and the dragon jumped Hiccup grabbed the handle and tackled her back.
"No!" He yelled throwing the axe away before he got in between the two, hands out to the dragon.
"No, it's okay! It's okay, she's a friend" he said calming the protective dragon down who slowly put his wings down but still held a snarling face at the young female.
"You scared him" Hiccup said as Toothless peered past his body at Astrid who had gotten back up.
"I scared him!?" She asked in disbelief as Toothless let out a growl making her tense before she calmed her breaths.
"Who is him?" She asked.
"Uh, Astrid, Toothless. Toothless, Astrid" Hiccup introduced as Toothless let out a snarl at the girl. She was frozen for a few seconds before she scowled at the pair before turning tail and rushing out of the cove.
"Duh da duh we're dead" Hiccup said as Toothless also turned and walked away.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa! Where do you think you're going?!" Hiccup asked the retreating form of Toothless.
In the woods
Astrid panted as she ran through the woods towards the village. Everyone needed to hear about this treason.
However as she jumped onto a large log and jumped off it, something grabbed her shoulder before her feet could hit the ground.
"Oh great Odin's ghost!" She yelled seeing that she was now high above the tallest tree around.
She screamed and tried to grab onto the thing holding her shoulder which turned out to be Toothless using his foreleg to hold onto her.
He approached a tree and threw her onto a branch before landed on the tree as well, causing it to bend and dangle Astrid even more.
"Hiccup! Get me down!" She yelled up at the boy on the dragon who still held a snarling face.
"You have to give me a chance to explain" Hiccup pleaded.
"I am not listening to anything you have to say!" She yelled working her way towards the pair.
"Then I won't speak. Just let me show you" he said holding out his hand. There was a pause as Astrid looked down before back up at him.
"Please Astrid" he pleaded. She still frowned but pulled herself up until she was kneeling on the branch.
Toothless let out a small rumble, looking at her with hatred. This made her freeze before she continued getting into the saddle behind Hiccup, slapping his hand out of the way as she got on.
"Now get me down!" She ordered sitting up straight while holding her arms out, afraid to touch either one of the two.
"Toothless, down. Gently" Hiccup said patting his head. Toothless outstretched his wings as Hiccup smiled and turned back to Astrid.
"See? Nothing to be afraid of" he said.
If only he could see Toothless' unamused face.
He then pumped his wings, rocketing up high into the sky.
"Whoa!" Hiccup said as Astrid screamed and clutched the saddle, her body leaning back from the force.
"Toothless! What is wrong with you, bad dragon!" He scolded as Astrid pulled herself to Hiccup, grabbing his shoulders tightly before wrapping her arms around him.
"He's- he's not usually like this" Hiccup said with a nervous chuckle before Toothless folded his right wing into his body.
"Oh no" Hiccup said as the dragon plummeted from the sky and into the water, over and over again.
"Toothless! What are you doing?! We need her to like us!" Hiccup yelled before the dragon began flying back up into the sky, doing a barrel roll.
"And now he's spinning" Hiccup said in a defeated voice as Astrid screamed even more.
"Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile" Hiccup added as he then began falling, still spinning.
"Okay! Okay, I'm sorry! I'm sorry. Just get me off this thing!" Astrid pleaded, burying her face into Hiccup's back.
Toothless heard that before he opened his wings wide, stopping their fall. He then began soaring calm and smooth through the clouds.
Astrid slowed her breathing before she opened her eyes and saw the sight around her. She lifted her arm into the air, amazed as she felt clouds on her hands.
She smiled and raised both hands into the light colored clouds.
Toothless then did a small roll before he drove through the clouds.
Timeskip
After flying for a few minutes the pair returned near Berk, which was now covered in the darkness of the night and Astrid was amazed to see the northern lights as close as they were.
She looked down and saw Berk from above which amazed her even more as she had been all over the village but never saw it from this angle. Toothless looked back at her and gave a small dragon smile at her happy face.
She wrapped her arms around Hiccup again and rested her chin on his shoulder. He smiled, shocked at the action as they moved around the carved Vikings with fires in their mouths, getting close to Berk unafraid since the darkness hid them from the night patrol.
"Alright, I admit it. This is pretty cool. It's amazing" she said as Hiccup smiled. She then put a hand on Toothless neck and smiled.
"He's amazing" she added. However as they soared away from Berk over the open sea, Astrid said what Hiccup had been thinking about ever since leaving the area.
"So what now?" She asked as he sighed.
"Hiccup, your final exam is tomorrow. You know you're gonna have to kill-" she said stopping herself remembering she was riding one.
"Kill a dragon" she whispered. Suddenly Toothless' eyes went into narrow slits as his ears picked up a low rumbling that the humans couldn't hear.
"Don't remind me" Hiccup said before Toothless suddenly dived closer to the ocean into some fog.
"Toothless what's happening?!" He asked shocked.
"Whoa what is it?" He added before he suddenly saw a Monstrous Nightmare beside them carrying a large fish.
"Get down!" Hiccup said as he and Astrid laid their bodies against Toothless' hoping the Nightmare didn't see them.
However that was the least of their worries as more and more dragons appeared in the fog and soon the two teens realized where they were.
They were in the middle of a flock returning from a raid on another island. And that meant they were heading back. Back to the nest.
"Toothless, you have to get us outta here bud" Hiccup said putting hand on Toothless' head but the dragon just shook it off and continued the course.
"It looks like they're hauling in their kill" Hiccup said seeing all the dragons also had some wild animals as well as stuff raided from a village.
"Uh... What does that make us?" Astrid said as a Zippleback beside them spotted them and stared at the two teens with hatred in their eyes.
Suddenly the dragons all began diving down which caused the teens to yell in shock. They flew along the ocean, dodging a maze of sea stacks, before they came upon an island with a large mountain and rivers of orange glowing magma.
"Whoa!" Hiccup yelled as the dragons all flew into a narrow slit in the side of the mountain, heading down a tunnel until they came upon a large open area mostly covered in fog with an orange glow below the fog. Littered around the room were towers of rocks which the dragons all landed on
"What my dad wouldn't give to find this" Hiccup muttered before Toothless finally got out of the flock and landed on one of the rock towers that came out of the fog.
"Oh, it's satisfying to know that all our food is being dumped down a hole" Hiccup said.
"They're not eating any of it... Maybe they're storing it for winter like we do?" Astrid guessed.
Suddenly the two heard the sound of wings landed and turned to see a dragon that resemble a Night Fury but had Skrill features.
"Skrill Fury" Hiccup said frozen with terror as Astrid clamped onto his back, also frozen, as the dragon came close and sniffed the two, growling the whole time.
"Uh, you have any knives on you?" Hiccup asked, remembering what the book said. However he only felt Astrid shake her head.
But Toothless let out a rumble which attracted its attention away from the two and instead, it rubbed its head against Toothless' shocking the two.
Suddenly they saw a slow moving Gronkle fly in at the back of the flock when the rest had already landed on their towers. It hovered over where the other had thrown the food before opening its mouth and dropped a small fish, maybe a foot long.
It scratched its head with one of its hind legs before a deep rumble made it freeze. It tried to fly to one of the rock towers but didn't make it as suddenly a dragon head, longer than their longest ship, emerged from the fog and swallowed the Gronkle whole.
Both teens gasped in shock, eyes wide. There had never been a dragon of that size ever, not even in the Book of Dragons.
"What. Is. That?" Astrid asked as all the other dragons hid on their towers as the head sank back into the fog. However it reappeared and began sniffing with its large nostrils.
"Okay bud, we gotta get outta here" Hiccup said realizing the dragon was sniffing them just as the dragon looked at them.
"Now!" He yelled as Toothless and the Skrill Fury took off just as the large dragon snapped its jaws where they had been seconds before.
The flock immediately began flying out of the top of the mountain which was open. The large dragon tried again, stretching its neck upwards, snapping at the teens and Night Fury but only succeeded in catching an unlucky Zippleback instead.
However a meal was a meal to this dragon and it sunk back down into the fog with the dragon still squirming and trying to get away.
Timeskip
"No, no it totally makes sense!" Astrid said as the pair rode on Toothless back in Berk woods. They had separated from the flock which took refuge on the sea stacks around the island before heading straight back, both shaken at what they had seen.
"It's like a giant bee hive. They're the workings and that's their Queen. It controls them and hoards all the food for itself" she said as Toothless landed in the cove and she hopped off.
"Let's find your dad!" She said running a few steps before Hiccup caught up to her yelling 'no.'
"No, not yet. They'll... Kill Toothless. No, Astrid, we have to think this through, carefully" Hiccup said.
"Hiccup, we just discovered the dragon's nest. The thing we've been after since Vikings first sailed here. And you wanna keep it a secret? To protect your pet dragon? Are you serious?" she asked.
Hiccup turned to her and was silent for a few seconds before nodding with a stern look.
"Yes" he said in a firm tone which made Astrid's eyes widened, just like when he yelled at her in the arena after the Zippleback incident.
"Okay, well how about your brother? I mean, you could punch him as hard as you can while bedding his future betrothed and he still wouldn't hate you" Astrid said with a smile as Hiccup chuckled a little.
"Probably... But... I don't know. He told me a story the other day about how a Nightmare took the lives of his best friends when they were younger. So he probably wouldn't accept Toothless as fast as you did. And right now I don't have time" Hiccup said.
"So what then?" She asked.
"Just... Give me till tomorrow. I'll figure something out" he said as she nodded.
"Okay" she said before pausing. She then slugged him hard in the shoulder.
"That's for kidnapping me" she said in an annoyed tone as Hiccup looked back at Toothless who was drinking some water. He gestured at the situation confused as she had been friendly with him the whole ride.
However as he turned back, Astrid quickly brushed some hair out of her eyes before giving him a quick kiss on the lips.
"That's for... Everything else" she said, her cheeks turning pink, before she quickly left. Hiccup smiled dumbly before he noticed Toothless had come up beside him and was looking at his rider with a look.
"Wh-What are you looking at?!" he asked before they both stared at the spot where Astrid had disappeared into the darkness.
