Greetings, everyone. Mgunnels3 here, and welcome back to A Promise Kept Ash's Johto Journey. I hope you all had a good New Year and holidays. Now, let's get this chapter going, shall we? We have a lot to cover here, so let's go.

Chapter 79: Motivations/Whirl Cup Finals

"Human Speech"

"Pokemon Speech"

'Telepathy'

The air around Pallet felt so crisp and relaxing. It was Brock's genius idea that since we had a day between the end of the last few battles and the Whirl Cup Finals themselves, it would serve both Ash and Misty to spend some time apart. They were friends and all but when it came to the Whirl Cup, those bonds that united them could prevent them from going all out to see who would win. They have wanted this match to happen for some time and now that the opportunity presented itself, they needed to train and make the best possible teams without revealing their strategies to each other. Brock mentioned that a day apart would do wonders, and they agreed. Contacting Oak to send his Alakazam to their location, the Professor happily obliged. The Psi Pokemon warped time and space to teleport Misty, first dropping her off at the Cerulean City Gym to spend the day with her sister before returning to take Ash home with him back to Oak's Ranch.

After he gathered himself from the intense teleportation, Ash headed home. It was there that a few things happened. Delia crushed him in an embrace like no other. She hadn't seen or heard from Ash in weeks. She did not let him forget about it until he promised to call her more often, or there would be dire consequences.

Second was Delia noticing how much Ash had outgrown his previous Kanto attire. His body had been developed over time, traveling to resemble the figure of a Pokelympian runner. His muscles were lean and defined. There was power in that body of his. Power that would likely be underestimated until it was too late. And yet the clothes he wore were hardly fitting. They were ragged and past their usefulness. Delia would take the day to build Ash new clothing. If he were gonna win the Whirl Cup as she believed he would it would be in proper attire.

Now, in a simple pair of sweats and a t-shirt, Ash took his time at the Ranch. Bonding with all the Pokemon he'd caught and even some of the ones he didn't.

Those abandoned by Damian held their walls up. Discussions were made earlier that week, with those in the Ranch still lingering among them. Ash respectfully gave them their and let them approach him if they do choose.

Meanwhile seeing Kang and Ivysaur act as the defacto leaders of the groups seemed to please Ash. He knew his Pokemon would be in tip-top shape in their care, and after the Whirl Cup ended, he'd be sure to rotate the team around heavily to hit the Silver League Conference Challenge with a vengeance. Returning the medicine to Jasmine, among the many things he'd need to do when the Whirl Cup ended, he saw a lot of his Pokemon training and socially interacting apart from a few. Bayleef was among those. Keeping to herself under the shade of a big tree in Oak's Ranch. Ash felt the urge to check on her. He approached the tree and began to rub the leaf on Bayleef's head.

Much as she didn't want to show it, she loved it when her Trainer did this. Which is why when she let out a deep sigh, Ash knew she had a lot on her mind.

"What's the matter, girl? I know we haven't been able to spend a lot of time together because of the Whirl Cup but that's almost done. Is there anything you need to talk about?"

She just looked defeated.

"I'm sorry, Ash. I just have a lot on my mind recently, mainly my brother. I worry about what lies Team Rocket continues to tell him; their influence on him has left me astonished. He's a shell of the Pokemon I used to know. I just want him back, is all."

"I know, girl. Believe me I saw what their tactics could do to Pokemon. Noctowl is still recovering from what they did to him. You saw how deep they had gotten their claws into his psyche, and still, we found a way to bring him back. I can promise you we will do everything in our power to give your brother a life worth living outside of Team Rocket. We'll do it together. You have my word."

Ash stated that once more, he rubbed the leaf on Bayleef's head. She cooed at his touch. She was so happy to have him as her Trainer especially in times like these.

"I know. Thank you."

"You're welcome. I'd do the same thing for any of you. I like to think I keep my promises well enough. Take Pidgeot, for example. After the Orange Islands, I kept my word and came back, and oh, what a journey it's been since. I can't imagine how it would've turned out if I hadn't. Speaking of, have you seen her around?"

Bayleef gestured to the forest.

"She's supposed to be finishing up the merger of the flocks today. Last I saw, she and Murkrow headed off that way."

To think a lot, this journey started with the conflict between the flocks, and today, of all days, it was set to finally have a resolution, which filled Ash with a sense of pride and glee.

"You know what? I was a part of all this flock debacle long ago. Even helped bridge the gap between Pidgeot and Fearow. I'm sure they wouldn't mind being there to see the merger be complete. I'll be back soon. Let the others where I am if they ask, will ya, girl?"

Though disappointed the leaf rubbing would end, she knew she couldn't keep Ash all to herself, and so she nodded to confirm she'd do as asked while Ash got up, soon with Pikachu in tow, as he headed to the forest to find Pidgeot and some of his other flying types.

Meanwhile, in Cerulean City.

Misty had spent the better of the morning swimming in the Cerulean Gym's pool with her Pokemon. Croconaw and Gyarados were just acting cool around the pool while her other Pokemon, like Corsola and Goldeen, ran laps. Kingdra and some of the others enjoyed Misty's happiness to be among her family and enjoying the swim. This was as fun for them as it was for her.

Daisy and the other Sensational Sisters were rehearsing their routine for a show later that afternoon. When they asked Misty to join them.

"Oh, little sister! Join us and let's make today's performance one for the ages. With the Whirl Cup almost at its end, it'll be a nice way to clear your head and think of a way to bring that cutie friend of yours, Ash, down."

Violet giggled at this. Seeing the blush on Misty's face when calling Ash a cutie was a great memory she would cherish and bring up whenever she could.

"He's not a cutie. If anything else he's, he's..."

"...you boyfriend to be one day."

The trio of sisters all cackled as Misty turned red as can be.

"HE'S NOT MY BOYFRIEND!"

Her outburst left her Pokemon laughing a bit. They knew her sisters were teasing, but seeing her as their Trainer like this was something else.

After exiting the pool. Her sisters hugged Misty.

"We are just teasing you, little red. We are just proud of you for all you've done. Especially taking down that Mega Gyarados. We know it was not easy but you showed you're worthy of winning it all in the Finals. Mom and Dad would be so proud of you, you know?"

It was Lily who said this, her voice cracking at the mention of their parents. They had a room in the back, and they would go in even just once a year to see how decorated their parents were. Their badges, trophies, and awards were clearly displayed. Even a Whirl Cup trophy from years ago when their father won it all with Blastoise beside him in the picture.

This is what inspired Misty to enter the Whirl Cup. Hoping lightning would strike twice and the glory of the Waterflower gene pool winning the Whirl Cup twice in their lifetimes would elevate her as a Trainer and the reputation of the Gym as a whole.

"I know. I am so close. I know Ash wants to win but not as much as I do. I'm going to build the perfect team to bring him down."

With the fire in her eyes, the Waterflower quartet spent the vast majority of the day bonding and even performing a special rendition of their usual show with Misty. She was happy to have this moment before she and her best friend would clash like never before in the hopes of winning the Whirl Cup tomorrow.

Back in Pallet.

In a clearing were dozens of Spearows, Pidgeys, Pidgeottos, and the odd Flying types like Noctowl, Skarmory, Murkrow, and even a young nest of Starlys. The merger of the flocks had been spoken up throughout the neighboring regions. It was an event very few Flying species would want to miss.

As Ash and Pikachu entered the clearing. Pidgeot was the one taken most by surprise by his arrival.

"Ash. I'm so glad you're here. I thought you were in Johto."

He rubbed under her chin. Her favorite spot as a Pidgeotto. He remembered.

"I was. It was recommended to me to spend the day away from Misty as we prepare for the Whirl Cup Finals. I'm happy I followed through on that advice. I would've been sad to have missed this moment."

Pidgeot just nipped at his hat.

"Well yeah, you started this whole debacle back in the day. You should be here to see its resolution."

Ash laughed when Fearow's booming voice echoed in the clearing.

"Good morning, fellow avians and flock brethren. We are ready to witness the merger or two formerly rival flocks joining as one. Through hardships and forgiveness we've come to understand there's more for us to accomplish together than we would ever do apart. We hope to finish the council of elders at a later point in time, but for now, most of the details of this merger have been discussed and agreed upon between Pidgeot and me. We are ready to bring peace to Pallet Forest and encourage future generations to work together and prosper."

It was at this moment whispers filled the air. Fearow's words registered to most but not all. There were many who did not wish this merger to go on as planned. Arceus damn them all if they did not act on their own than to sit back and watch this atrocious union to be fulfilled. Fearow would then continue.

"Now, if there are any objections to the merger, this is your final chance to speak out. Some have shown disdain towards this event happening but have remained silent when major discussions were held.

Please understand your frustrations are understood. However, the ways in which our flocks used to scavenge for food, fight for territory, and fight for the sake of pride nearly dwindled our numbers to dangerous levels. Our children would starve, our injuries would be left unattended and our existence would be a blip in the history of these lands if things didn't change. They needed to. While it is upsetting now, we hope you can all come to understand the necessities of this merger. Therefore, speak now against this promise of a better tomorrow today or forever hold your peace."

Just as Fearow was going to pass the motion with the Pidgeot flock Leader and interim Council member, Ash's Pidgeot and Daniel's Pidgeotto's uncle, respectively, thus making it official, one of the Fearow flock members spoke up.

"I object to this!" One of the Pidgeottos who had been on that flock for a while spoke up as everyone turned to him before another spoke up as well.

"I do, too; he's trying to make a Council with the majority of the members being either part of her flock or are too young to do so." A Spearow said, still not happy about the fact that the mention of the new Council was going to be members of Ash's Pokemon, not to mention Daniel's Pidgeotto. As Ash was going to interject, Pidgeot stopped him, shaking her head. While trying to be helpful he could wind up saying the wrong thing and do more damage to this already tense environment.

"Pokemon business, Ash. You should stay out of this." Pidgeot said to Ash, who decided to heed her advice as she spoke up.

"And what's wrong with my age? Need I remind you that I've been the Leader of this flock and helped a lot more than usual.

Not to mention brought most who I have met on my journey to help with it." Ash's Pidgeot spoke in a respectful tone to not make things worse as Skarmory and Murkrow also were going to speak up, only for another member to speak out.

"If I recall correctly, you didn't even realize this was your family's flock, Pidgeot.

And was it you who suggested that we wait until the League ends to start the merger, or has Fearow's power and influence also gotten to you?" One of her flock members said that as Pidgeot was ready to burn feathers, she wouldn't stand by seeing her flock go against what she had and crumble what her father built as the member continued.

"Should I remind you that it was her trainer who is also the reason Fearow was after us after our original treaty was broken?"

The murmurs of "That's right, it was that boy." and "It was his fault." made Ash bow his head in slight shame. Sure, he'd helped make things right since then, but it was him who started this whole mess. He was sorry, but that didn't mean his actions were forgotten.

"Who says Fearow won't try to overthrow this regime? It's what he wanted to do when our previous leader, who I remind you was Pidgeot's father, left us only to lose after losing to Fearow. Can't you see what he was trying to do?

Are we to believe that Fearow might not stab us in the back again?

Or worse, do you not consider does his influence while training with you, Pidgeot, has begun to cloud your judgment?

Not to mention your brother, of all mons, wanted the flocks to be separate before finding the truth about you.

You, Pidgeot, really don't know what is going on with your flock, nor do you understand our past history with Fearow."

Pidgeot, Skarmory, Pidgeotto, her brother, and Murkrow were at a loss for words.

'Is this what the flock truly thinks of us?' Pidgeot was left speechless.

Fearow was about to say something; however, one by one, the rest of the Pidgey flock turned on the mention of the merger, as one spoke up.

"If you really want this merger to happen, you have to show how much you've grown Pidgeot, not just you, your family, and the rest of your team.

Don't think that this means you are banished from the flock—none of us are that heartless.

But you really needed to see why your father chose to move on as a Leader. He led this flock rightfully without conflict amongst the leaders. We only seek the same wisdom and strength from you.

Only then might we consider the merger again, and you as someone who can do more than be a Leader. It is a role that's meant to do so much more for our flocks than just talking." This one who spoke up was with the flock as long as the previous, more prominent Council members.

As Pidgeot looked down, she had no way to counter that as he continued.

"If you and your niece still want to visit, that's fine.

Fearow, until further notice, no mention of the merger is to be done until Pidgeot has matured as a leader and proven herself worthy of her title. Until then, this meeting is over."

Everyone in both flocks disbanded to head back to their nests, as what had just happened was still weighing heavily in everyone's minds who was still there:

Pidgeot, Daniel's Pidgeotto, their Uncle, Murkrow, Skarmory, and Fearow. They knew that their past was going to come back to bite them soon enough.

"This wasn't supposed to happen. Things were going smoothly during our time here, and yet with one flock member, the entire flock turned against each other again." Daniel's Pidgeotto said out loud, and Ash's Pidgeot shook her head at her brother, not in annoyance for most of what he said but to show she had a feeling this would happen.

"No, I had a feeling that this might happen, brother. I said to you three the other day that the merger is still too early, but I agree.

I wanted to leave here knowing that things might work out and move on without having to worry about it, but I was wrong. Sorry, Uncle. Sorry, Fearow, and sorry, everyone." Pidgeot told her fellow flock members and teammates who understood what she was saying as Fearow spoke up.

"I agree it's not your fault, Pidgeot. Also, Pidgeotto, would things have gone smoothly like you said if you were the flock Leader, or do you still think that this would still happen?" Fearow said to his godson, who was taken aback by this, and looked down, grasping what Fearow had just said.

"It would've ended the same way." Pidgeot's uncle spoke up.

"I, too, had a feeling that this would happen after that meeting when I agreed to it, Fearow, but I really thought I would get through to them. It seems they were still bitter about being replaced, possibly thinking that they would no longer be in the flock."

"I was planning on you staying on the Council given that you have a lot more experience and are someone we all trust here, Pidgeot. But right now, we shouldn't force things on the others until we can prove ourselves.

There's so much at stake, not just for my niece, Murkrow, my godson Pidgeotto, you, Pidgeot, and myself. I hope you are ready for that task." Fearow pointed out that everyone needed to step up and mature as Ash spoke up.

"So what are you suggesting you all do? If you need help, I'm willing to provide it in any way I can." Ash said.

Fearow now noticed him but shook his head as Pidgeot spoke up.

"There's a reason why I asked you not to step in, Ash, cause it might make things worse than it already was, especially when they mentioned you earlier during all that."

"There are reasons why humans don't get involved with Pokemon affairs unless other humans are involved, and it's the other way around. It might cause more issues or lack of trust in both sides." Fearow said to Ash, who remained silent.

Ash showed that back in the Whirl Islands if his Pokemon were in any trouble, he'd do what he could to help. He'd done so even when Ash wasn't sure if Damien was involved at the time in any of the situations he'd been in over the course of his travels.

However, Ash wasn't going to sit by and not do anything.

"But we have to do something. Pidgeot, your niece Skarmory, and Murkrow are members of my team, and to me, they're family, not just Pokemon. Is there anything you can think of that can help anyone, perhaps one of your contacts or something, given that you're Leaders and all?" Ash said as Daniel's Pidgeotto spoke up on the latter part.

"One problem, Ash, is that we only have a few contacts in Johto; one is Pidgeot's father and mine. The other was the flock Skarmory was born into but I haven't spoken to them in a while.

The last contact is Skarmory's godmother, and she just left not long ago before my sister came back here. I have no other contacts to speak of." Pidgeotto told Ash, who was at a loss for words as Skarmory spoke up.

"I could try to contact her or go to where she is, but Mt. Mortar is vast, and there are a lot of other flocks in the area that might cause more issues with my status in this flock." Skarmory said as Fearow had been silent up until now.

Skarmory noticed this and asked. "Do you have any other ideas or contacts, Uncle?"

Fearow nodded and turned to the group.

"I have one more contact in Johto. Last I checked, he was away from where you all are." Fearow said as he continued.

"He's someone that both myself and your father know well. He is someone I can see having something of an advisory role to the flock as well as someone who can talk some sense into them." Fearow finished.

The group was surprised, as they had no idea that there was another contact.

"Fair warning, though he's not too fond of humans, and while he doesn't preach it, many Pokemon need humans to get stronger. He doesn't let anyone earn his trust that easily. That goes even for you, Ash.

I've been in contact with him since we made peace the day you came back for Pidgeot, and let's say some of his fellow partners have been speaking highly of you lately, which may help. Tread lightly, however." Fearow told Ash and the others, who took his warning to heart before Pidgeot spoke up.

"He might be the one I need to prove myself. Can you describe who or what Pokemon he is?" Pidgeot asked Fearow, who shook his head.

"I'm saying no to telling you because I don't want you to go on a wild goose hunt to find him. This is for you to find out and see for yourself.

I will give you one hint: Who he is, is going to be more shocking than what transpired today. That is all I can say."

Ash wondered what that meant but decided not to press the issue further.

"Just watch how you approach him and what you say. This is my warning to not only you four but also Ash and Pidgeotto's trainer if he runs into him."

Everyone was silent about how mysterious Fearow's contact was, and how he warned them as Fearow turned to Ash.

"Right now, you've done everything you can to help this merger work to the best of your ability.

Right now, you need to mature, not as a trainer but as a team. I know that you are in your teens just by looking at you. Right now, you should focus on your journey as a trainer and help grow my niece and Pidgeot.

If you ever have a chance of earning the right to be my contact's Trainer, you have to earn it by showing why you are highly favored and why I and so many other Pokemon, even Legendary ones..."

Hunting that word of his encounter with Lugia has spread even to a lesser degree throughout the Pokemon World.

"...during your journey trust you as an ally, Ash."

Ash fell silent as what Fearow said rang true. Fearow turned to Skarmory and Daniel's Pidgeotto.

"Let's head back. If you need my niece let me know.

I'll inform my scouts ahead of time so we don't have any issues until then. It's good seeing you again, Ash." Fearow said to Ash and the others while Skarmory and Pidgeotto were about to join him, only for Ash to speak out.

"I just have one question, if you don't mind, Fearow." Ash addressed Fearow, who stopped and turned to him.

"You mentioned earlier that your contact has issues with humans in general. But you never explained why that is.

How am I supposed to approach him and not some random flying type, especially given how most flocks are towards humans, like with those like Poachers, Team Rocket, and Damien still out there?

Please answer that or tell me what I'm looking for without giving him away. Ash asked as Fearow sighed knowing that Ash's concern was valid.

"What you just said there about humans is the main reason why he has issues with humans, Ash." Fearow said to Ash, who was taken aback as Fearow continued.

"We Pokemon can be odd. We may want to have our trainers one day and the right to choose them without going against our beliefs or be left in peace should we choose not to, but we are often forced into situations that damage our natural intent to build trust in humans.

That is one of the reasons why the merger was a thing. So we can allow the younger members to possibly find their trainers one day in a manner where they can feel it was their choice.

Poachers and those like Team Rocket make it harder for anyone to trust humans. At the same time, we respect those like the ones at the Pokemon Centers and the Rangers, your human police force, and your local professor here in Kanto.

It's harder to trust anyone nowadays without knowing if they won't stab us in the back.

That's why my colleague hates humans in the first place. He has only seen the bad ones and rarely seen the good ones, and he's not that much older than Pidgeotto here, by almost 4 years." Fearow finished. Hearing that caught a lot off guard.

"I have a feeling you and him will meet sooner than you think, Ash, especially considering how things are going from what I was told over on your end. Just hold firm in what you believe in and don't let whatever he says get to you.

When you do meet him, you'll know, by the way. Just be mindful that he acts the way that he does, as he's no ordinary flying type. I've said all I can. Sorry if it seems like riddles and nonsense but there are reasons why the nature of the Pokemon merits them. Some secrets are worth keeping and his identity is one of them. On this matter, I can say no more."

Ash nodded at the last statement. Fearow nodded back and gave one last statement.

"I'm glad you came to see us and wish things had ended better here. You are welcome amongst my flock, that is for sure, Ash. Until then, take care." Fearow said. Soon, he, Skarmory, and Daniel's Pidgeotto took off after saying goodbye, of course, as Ash sighed in slight frustration but deep understanding that as much as he wanted to know more, now wasn't the right time.

Ash took the time to spend the day with Pidgeot. While she wasn't too verbal about it, doubts about her leadership coming into play hurt her pride. She felt she had done a good job in the time she had been given prior to Ash coming back from the Orange Islands. Would things be like this if she'd chosen to stay or if Ash had gone to Johto without her? Her thoughts were interrupted when Ash rubbed her head crest. Seemingly this boy knew just where and when to soothe her.

"You know they are just worried about being disappointed again with whomever is left in charge. They would have these doubts about almost any avian that were to be considered for the role." Ash said trying to reassure her.

"But they have them about me." Pidgeot said with a heavy sigh.

"Let them. To underestimate you is their choice but it doesn't have to be yours. I saw your potential to be great the second I saw you and you joined my team. You were there through the hardships of letting Butterfree go, letting Primeape follow his aspirations to be a Grand Prix Champion, and so much more. You have been a pillar of my team and will continue to be even if we're miles apart. That's my faith in you. Believe in that. Prove them wrong. They said so themselves. Now may not be the right time but given the opportunity to prove yourself, you will leave absolutely no doubt that this flock can and will thrive under you."

Pidgeot tried not to cry but could no longer hold back the tears that escaped her eyes at Ash's words. This boy would have her loyalty and love forever. Thanks to him she made a family in her fellow Trainer's Pokemon as well as the beginnings of her own with the way her bond with Charizard was going. Who would've thought love would blossom between those two? Yet here she was thanks to Ash.

"Thanks for always believing in me."

Pidgeot said this before she nipped his hat one last time. Sadly, it was the last nip that the hat would withstand for some time. Ash took it off to see its condition.

"Yikes. This hat had seen better days."

"Don't I know it?" Pikachu added.

"Surviving as many Thundershocks and Thunderbolts, Flamethrowers from Charizard, being stolen by Mankey back in the back, the shenanigans of Team Rocket, and the many adventures along the way, I'm surprised it lasted this long. Maybe Momma Delia can fix it."

Pikachu finished off.

"We can find out. Hey, girl, you mind giving us a ride back home?"

Pidgeot happily obliged. Taking to the skies with Ash on her back, who hollered, enjoying the rush that flying on one of his most trusted Pokemon brought with it.

"I hope this feeling never goes away. I love being a Trainer, and by the grace of Arceus, I will be a Pokemon Master one day! Whoo!"

The day flew by. No pun intended before Ash was home and went to his house. Where Delia was preparing a bountiful meal for him, knowing he would be leaving so soon after his sudden return from Johto.

"Hey, Mom, I'm home. And what is the divine smell?"

Delia laughed. It was his favorite meal.

"Well...seeing as how I may not see you again for a bit again, I made some of your favorites. Ramen with red miso broth as well as a blueberry pie."

To say Ash's mouth was watering was an understatement because so was Pikachu's. Momma Delia always knows how to fill up your belly with a warm meal made from the heart.

"And don't worry. I made sure to add some ketchup to your meal, Pikachu."

Jumping off of Ash's shoulder, he landed on Delia's and nuzzled her to his heart's content. "Pika, chu!"

Was all Delia could hear, as she had not been given the power to understand Pokespeech as the trio had, but she knew all too well. He said, "I love you."

She replied, "I love you too. Now go upstairs, take a shower, and see the new clothes I made for you."

"Speaking of..."

Ash said a bit timidly to show how far gone the condition of his hat was, but he did so anyway. Delia could only shake her head in amusement.

"After all those postcards..." Delia laughed, reminiscing about how Ash got that hat.

There were only 100 of these hats which were given away by the Pokémon League, and Ash claimed to have "sent in about a million postcards" in order to obtain it.

"... I'll see what can be done, but should the need arise, would you be ok with a different one?"

"Let's cross that bridge when we get to it. I know you will work your magic, Mom. You always find a way."

He said, hugging her. An embrace she gladly returned before he left his hat on the table and did as told. Took a shower and found a change of clothes waiting for him.

This new look was similar to the old one, though a bit inverted. He now wore a blue shirt with a white jacket with the same gold trim as his old one. His Johto badges were pinned to the inner lining, as he preferred to have them. His pants were deep red, and his shoes were the same, though a lot cleaner than before.

Heading back downstairs. Pikachu is not far behind.

"Gotta say, Mom. I love the new look. Feels familiar but with a new twist."

"Thank you, honey. I made sure to add some spares in your bag. Now sit and eat, and let's enjoy this brief time together. I know you still have to head to Oak's Ranch before you go. I'd like to spend as much time with you before that moment comes."

Delia said with a sweet smile.

"You got it, Mom."

As they enjoyed their meal, Pikachu licking his bowl clean to savor the traces of Ketchup left behind, Ash sat thinking about the best team to fight in tomorrow's Finals. So far, he only knew he would want to use Lapras.

After that meal, he must have been so tired because he took a nap, not realizing that when he woke up next, it'd be about three hours later, with Pikachu resting on his lap, lips adorned with ketchup stains.

"I was just about to wake you up, honey. It's almost time for you to go. You were so peaceful taking that nap, seems like you needed a break more than you originally thought."

Delia said rubbing her son's forehead as he yawned.

"Guess so. I better get going. It was great spending time with you, Mom."

"Now, now. You're forgetting something very important."

"I know, I know. Always change my underwear and to call you more. I will, Mom."

Delia giggled. This boy was too sweet for his own good.

"Well that and this..." revealing the hat was fixed albeit by the slightest of margins.

"...you're welcome and please take care of it. It doesn't have much life left in it but it should see the end of your Johto journey just fine. Afterwards I'd think of getting a new one."

She placed the hat on his head after giving him a goodbye kiss on his head.

"Kick some butt and win that Whirl Cup. I believe in you, sweetie."

With a final hug, he headed over to Oak's Ranch and gathered his water around the lake within the Ranch.

The sights of Blastoise, Feraligatr, Lanturn, and the rest filled his heart with joy.

"I'm glad everyone is here. You've all done well, and because of that, we are in the Finals of the Whirl Cup."

The water types all splashed around and made their happiness known.

"Trouble is our Finals opponent is Misty."

This caused some whispers. They loved Misty. Often, when Ash would train with her, she would help them learn new moves and offer tips to better care for them. Now, she was their opponent in such an important event. What would they do?

"Exactly. I will not ask anyone that does not want to face her to do so. That said, Lapras is up for the fight. She's going to give it her all. As I know those who choose to fight will too. Do I have any takers as to who wants to join us in the Finals?"

Only a few seconds went by when Kingler stepped up before soon after Feraligatr did the same.

"You're positive about this?" He asked before the battle cries of his Pokemon affirmed they were.

"Then wish us luck, everyone. We've got a Whirl Cup to win. After this tournament is over and our Johto journey continues, I'll be rotating you all out more often. I promise."

The collective of Ash's Pokemon said their goodbyes. Those not yet caught from Damian's past dealings the watched on. They were... optimistic...to say the least. Maybe there was some hope this Trainer was everything they had built him up to be. They still needed some time.

As Ash went to Oak himself and thanked him for everything, the Professor just stated that he was happy he took a chance on Ash with Pikachu long ago before wishing him luck in tomorrow's match. Alakazam soon appeared. He had long transported Misty back to Johto and was happy to do the same for Ash now. In the blink of an eye, they disappeared and Ash would be in Johto with a clear mind and the team to beat Misty.

In her room.

Poliwhirl, Corsola, and Kingdra were Misty's chosen Mons. They offered a plethora of power and technique. With Corsola's speed and precision shooting, she hoped to make some of Ash's picks for the Finals, regret underestimating its small but mighty companion. While Poliwhirl had been wanting to prove himself before deciding which final evolved form to choose. Helping Misty win the Whirl Cup would go a long way towards deciding whether to embrace the challenge that comes with being a Poliwrath and switching to a more physically based style of fighting or becoming a Politoed. Politoeds were often mocked for being jolly but that joy came from a boost in the special attack that made their water moves much more devastating. It was a mistake to take a Politoed lightly. But which to choose? Poliwhirl's mind would weigh heavily on this decision.

Right beside her was Kingdra. A mighty ocean titan. The yawns of sleeping Kingdra are said to be powerful enough to create undercurrents capable of destroying small ships. Should they decide to emerge from the depths of the ocean, Kingdras strength can create large whirlpools and waterspouts on the surface. Because of their immense power, Kingdra often hibernates deep in uninhabited areas of the sea to build up their energy, usually at the bottom of the seas.

It's incredible to think this aquatic behemoth called her Trainer, but it had her loyalty since its capture. She'd displayed enough competence and respect for it to follow her guidance. It would do everything in its power to help her win.

With big hopes and the desire to win, both Trainers now rest knowing tomorrow would be a battle for the ages.

It was the day of the Whirl Cup Finals, and both Ash and Misty were waiting on opposite sides of the coliseum-like field for the announcer to send them to the battlefield. All the while, Zapdos was up in the lighting, and Lugia and her son, Silver, were in the depths of the water, having a better view of the battlefield, ready to use the depths of the ocean to remain out of sight if they went underwater.

"Now, will both trainers make their way to the battlefield so we can begin this epic finale? " the announcer said as Misty and Ash got out of their respective locker rooms and made their way to the battlefield. The applause for both was deafening but well-appreciated.

Both knew that no matter who wins or loses today, they're still friends to the end. Yet they knew that only the new of them could win it all.

"With so many trainers and so many hurdles having been overcome throughout the entire tournament, we are now down to the final two trainers, and both these two have earned their rightful place in this finals indeed." the announcer said as both Misty and Ash made it to the battlefield before hyping up the match once more.

"Ash Ketchum impressed many with his unique tactics and battle prowess. He has the making to be a prodigy in the Pokemon Battle Circuit that's for sure.

While Misty Waterflower's name has not stopped being praised since taking down her last opponent's Mega Gyarados. The potential she wields could see her win it all very soon."

The battlefield looked like it had been moved around platforms after Misty and Paul's battle, as Ash and Misty were now on opposite sides of the battlefield.

However, Ash felt as though he was being watched. A gaze from somewhere, not ominous in any way, but it was intense, and he was not sure where especially after hearing about what Fearow said to him the other day. He looked around and noticed the Lapras school was outside of the coliseum of the Whirl Cup, which was natural given that this was Lapras' family. He was sure they were wager to see her in the Finals, he was chuck it up to their presence but this wasn't that feeling that Ash was worried about. He would have to worry about it later.

Misty also noticed that something was off with Ash. Although she wasn't aware of what happened during their time away from each other, she let it go and would ask Ash later once the battle was over. Ash also let go of what was going on and focused on the battle.

"Now, this Whirl Cup Finals will now begin. Both sides will use 3 Pokemon each and can switch out anytime during the match. The match will be over when all 3 Pokemon on either side cannot battle.

Let's make this last battle of this Whirl Cup unforgettable. Let out your first Pokemon, and we'll begin this match."

The ref announced as he spoke that those who were watching this match were listening from both legendaries in the area to the Pokemon at the Ranch, especially Fearow, Pidgeot, and their allies.

Ash's Mother and Misty's sisters were watching at home on their TVs. Brock was in the stands, and anyone who participated in the tournament and was still at the stadium was scattered through the crowd, awaiting to see these two clash.

"Ash, no matter who wins today, I have no hard feelings because I won't hold back today. Love the new look by the way." Misty said as Ash smiled at that last bit. Sharing the same feeling as both took out their Pokeballs.

"Corsola, let's go."

"Kingler, I choose you."

Misty and Ash sent out their first Pokemon as they landed on the platforms beside their respective trainers as the stage was set for these highly anticipated Finals to begin.

"Corsola vs. Kingler, let the tournament Finals begin." the ref announced.

Both Misty and Ash were ready to get this started.

"Corsola, use Ancient Power now," Misty commanded her Pokemon, who launched a power of rocks with prehistoric energy towards Kingler. Ash knew that he had to act fast because if she got powered up, that move could get out of hand fast.

"Protect now, Kingler, and then Crabhammer." Ash commanded his Pokemon who puts up a barrier as the boulders managed to hit the barrier causing an explosion upon contact with the barrier. Kingler's pincer soon landed in the water and sent a powerful water blast towards Corsola.

"Counter with Bubblebeam Corsola." Misty commanded her Pokemon, who countered the wave the Crabhammer caused before it could get to her, using the moment the moves made contact as a distraction for Corsola submerging underwater, but Ash right through it.

"Super Power on the water before she could get out of there," Ash commanded his Pokemon, but before Kingler could react, Corsola managed to reach Kingler.

"Attract now, Corsola." Misty commanded her Pokemon as she managed to land a massive set of hearts on Kingler, and given that he is male, this made things even worse for Ash.

"Kingler, snap out of it. Come on." Ash said to his Pokemon while trying to remain calm in the situation. His Pokemon was now infatuated with Corsola, and she was acting cute to make it harder for him to fight back as Misty smirked.

"Scald now, Corsola, while his defenses are down," Misty commanded her Pokemon, who happily did so, landing a massive blast of boiling water toward Kingler.

As Misty chuckled, Kingler was even redder than his scales and Ash was now worried.

"You see, Ash Scald isn't just a normal water-type move. It's also a move that can burn the opponent and by doing so, weaken its power. Unfortunately, condition status can't stack up, given that your Kingler is under Corsola's spell. It's avoided the burn, but it's going to be harder for him to fight back."

All the while, Brock was watching in the stands. His focus on the battle was impalpable, as he did not wish to root for either of them and choose a favorite. Instead, seeing how both his best friends had grown made him so proud.

'Well played, Misty. I must admit I wasn't expecting you to come up with a strategy like this while you and Ash were away from each other. What else do you have planned for Ash?' Brock said to himself as he was rooting for both his friends, but he told Misty the night prior to going full out here, not just as a friend but as a fellow Gym Leader.

All the while, Zapdos, who was watching this, was now curious how Ash would counter this and admitted that this was more entertaining than Ash's last battle.

"Let's see how well you'll respond to this, Chosen One, and how you'll impress me today." Zapdos said to himself while watching this. Ash, while he could see that this would be bad, remained calm, which caught Zapdos off guard.

'Just what did he do during that time off to be this calm? Something is different.' Zapdos thought.

"Not bad, Misty. You've really come a long way since we left each other yesterday to prepare for this fight, but we're not going down without a fight."

The passion that erupted from Ash made his fans yell out, " Let's go, Ketchum," while the Misty fans went "Waterflower," both sides doing rhythmic five-claps as they continued chanting.

"Kingler, try fighting back and use Super Power." Ash commanded his Pokemon, who barely managed to get out of the attract well, still under it. He managed to use its attack as it landed a blow on Corsola.

"Corsola Ancient power before it could protect itself again." Misty commanded as Corsola managed to land a blow with its move quickly. She was getting stronger, and an aura of power was glowing on her.

"Man, how good did she get since we last saw her?" Ash said out loud..

"Let's just say I worked on her speed and power, Ash, not to mention her endurance. You want to win badly, Ash; you're gonna need to show it here, especially with the fact that you are always wide open to moves that can cripple your team, Ash." Misty said pointing out Ash's main flaws that he is always going head first and thinking second later.

'With my family watching me and knowing that they have won this competition in the past, I'm not going to back down now. Just hang in there a little bit more, Corsola, and we'll take out one of his main threats.' Misty thought as Corsola was determined to win or go down trying.

"Bubblebeam now, Corsola." Misty commanded her Pokemon. Corsola fired its attack on Kingler.

"Counter with Facade, Kingler. Breakthrough her love spell. I know you can do it." Ash commanded his Pokemon, managing to overcome the Attract before it was able to slam its claw right into Corsola before the Bubblebeam could land.

"Corsola! Man, I didn't think Ash would have a counter to a status ailment move for me." Misty said as Corsola, while looking like she was hit by a truck, managed to stay in the fight because of the powerup from Ancient Power. Misty could tell that Kingler was worn down enough to where a change in tactics could give her the edge as she pulled out a Pokeball.

"Corsola, Return." Misty returned it to her ball, and Ash was taken aback. "Poliwhirl, come out." Misty sent out her second Pokemon.

While the Attract was seemingly worn down, Kingler had seen better days, especially with the rate at which he used his stamina during the battle.

"Rain Dance now, Poliwhirl, and then use Belly Drum." Misty commanded her Pokemon, who stepped in rhythm on the water before it went up in the air, making a rainstorm, and then patted its belly to get stronger and quickly, more so than Ash could respond to it.

"Kingler, use Crabhammer," Ash commanded his Pokemon, who tried to use its attack only for it to really struggle to use it. Realizing all too late, the Attract was in effect, and Kingler hit himself with great force. "Kingler!"

"Checkmate, Ash. Poliwrill use Brick Break." Misty commanded her Pokemon. With great force it slammed its fists into Kingler, sending it straight into the water harder and faster than it normally would be.

Kingler rose to the surface with swirls in his eyes as it was knocked out unconscious, his last thoughts wondering what hit it.

"Kingler is unable to battle Poliwril; Poliwhirl wins," the ref announced as Ash returned Kingler to its ball, praising it. Despite the setback, he knew he had to do something about that Poliwhirl, and soon.

"Man, that was fast. What just happened?" Ash said to Misty, who laughed as Poliwhirl posed because of it and showed off its speed, as Ash had just noticed it.

"Let's just say that this Poliwhirl is very special, Ash. Normally it's species has the ability Water Absorb or Damp, but as you can guess mine does not. It actually has Swift Swim. The gloves are off, Ash.

Right now, you are challenging my team at full power. You didn't think that this was going to be easy, did you?" Misty explained this to Ash, who smiled as Misty noticed and knew that Ash was taking this battle seriously as well.

"Not bad, Misty. Well then, if it's a fast battle you want, then it's a fast battle you get." Ash said as he pulled out a Pokeball. "Feraligatr, come on out." Ash sent out his next Pokemon.

"Feraligatr, use Ancient Power." Ash commanded his Pokemon, which launched its attack toward Poliwhirl fast and successfully landed the move on Poliwhirl. It looked painful but Poliwhirl took the hit like a champ.

"Oh, yeah? Poliwhirl use Double Team," Misty commanded her Pokemon, which made mirror clones and was on all of the platforms around Feraligatr.

"Keep calm, Feraligatr. The real one is out there, focus. You'll find it." Ash said as Feraligatr calmed down and tried to sense where Poliwhirl was at. The similarities between the clones were too many. Something was off. It wasn't one of those clones!

It was a distraction as Poliwhirl gave itself away as it was coming from behind ready to strike Feraligatr.

"Body Slam now, Poliwhirl." Misty commanded her Pokemon, who was now fully powered from the Belly Drum and ready to hit Feraligatr as it came from behind him at a fast speed. Ash had to act fast.

"Dragon Claw, now Feraligatr." Ash instructed his Pokemon, who slammed his claw straight into Poliwhirl, knowing to no longer be distracted by the clones, sending it back to the platform in front of Misty at a fast rate. Passing through many of its mirages in the process. It looked like it really hit hard.

"Poliwhirl!" Misty said as Poliwhirl was just barely getting up. Poliwhirl held its fists at Misty, showing that it was still raring to go. Misty sighed with relief because she knew the rain dance would be done soon enough, so she'd have to end Feraligatr fast before she could use the Rain Dance to her advantage again.

"Poliwhirl, use Earthquake." Misty relayed her order to her Pokemon, who slammed its legs on the platform, sending shockwaves throughout the water.

"Feraligatr, show her true power. Use Giga Impact. End this." Feraligatr charged in at Poliwhirl. It slammed into Poliwhirl hard and sent it into the wall but try as it may to get up. Again, Poliwhirl was knocked out.

"Poliwhirl is unable to battle Feraligatr; the match is tied." the ref announced as Misty returned her Pokemon to its ball. The Rain ended just as she did.

In the sky

"Not bad, both of you. I must say I'm impressed so far with taking a situation like this and using it to your advantage. You both are really special, I won't lie." Zapdos said, impressed that Ash was quick on his feet even in a bad situation like this when he didn't exactly impress him once in the last battle. Zapdos could tell he was not like any other trainer.

While he still doesn't see what's so special about him, his appearance-wise, or how he is as a trainer, he does see that Ash does care for his Pokemon and how he lets them use their own battle style as he smirks seeing this.

In the ocean

From her position, Lugia could see that Zapdos was impressed so far. Even with his smirk, he showed how strong her psychic power could be, just as legendary from her angle.

Back in the Coliseum

"Ash, you are giving my team a run for its money. I'll give you that but this match is far from over. Corsola, come on out." Misty sent back out her Corsola, whose' power had returned to normal, and she knew the cause of the Giga Impact side effects; she had to act fast before Ash could gain the advantage.

"Attract now l, Corsola." Misty commanded her Pokemon, who managed to land the attraction while Feraligatr was still recovering from the Giga Impact side effects.

"Not again!" Ash said, knowing that it would be bad for him if Misty managed to weaken another one of his Pokemon with her combo while getting stronger. "Don't fall for it, Feraligatr. She's just using you." Ash said to try to snap out Feraligatr as she was making kisses and being all cute while laughing at her opponent's situation.

"All too easy. You boys need someone to make you feel comfortable in your life." Corsola teased, getting a bit arrogant while doing so, and Misty smirked at this.

'That's what happens when most of your team is male, Ash. They fall all the same.' Misty thought.

"Scald now, Corsola." Misty commanded her Pokemon and fired at Feraligatr, who was still affected by her attraction. Feraligatr's scales were burning hot, but there was nothing Ash could do, and Misty knew it, seizing the moment.

"Now Ancient Power, Corsola." Misty commanded her Pokemon, who launched its attack at Feraligatr, who moved out of the way. This shocked Misty, only to realize that perhaps Scald broke him free from the Attract effect.

"Uh oh!" Both Misty and Corsola said in unison.

"Uh oh is exactly right, Brick Break." Ash commanded his Pokemon, who slammed its claws right into Misty's Corsola before it could evade Feraligatr, sending her into the water.

"A little too arrogant. I must say there, Corsola, you were teasing so much that you left Feraligatr to recover faster than Kingler after that Scald hit. That might cost you both the match." Ash said to both Corsola and Misty as both sneered and groaned at this. on her last legs but that didn't mean she'd go down easy.

Ash had grown a bit since what happened with the flock. He couldn't do things the way he usually does, and he knew that he had to change not only his strategy but also his own as a trainer.

In the sky

Zapdos noticed, could tell he was a completely different trainer, and wondered what was happening.

Back in the Coliseum

Misty pondered if this was Ash, the same person she had traveled with. Yet, while he still acted like himself, he seemed to be coming out on top here as Corsola spoke up to Misty.

"This is far from over, Misty. We can do this. We've come a long way as well, and we're not going to let the team down or go down without a fight." Corsola said to Misty, who nodded. This was far from over.

"Right, this is still the Ash we know, and we won't let this deter us." Misty said as Corsola turned and turned to her opponent, determined to finish this.

"We can't rely on attracting this time, so use Bubblebeam." Corsola launched a torrent of bubbles at Feraligatr.

"Ancient Power, counter it." Ash commanded his Pokemon, who matched the bubble beam as if they were almost at the same power as each other, causing an explosion.

The force of the explosion made the line of sight towards Corsola be very minimal. She had to strike now.

"Ancient Power, end this Corsola," she said as her Corsola charged in towards Feraligatr with speed. There was a small window to connect. Could she make it in time?

"Quick! Counter with Dragon Claw now Feraligatr." In the blink of an eye it was Feraligatr who slammed his claw into Corsola just as the Ancient Power landed on Feraligatr. The world was practically in slow motion as both Pokemon were down.

"Feraligatr!"/"Corsola!" Both Trainers saw their Pokemon fall. It was over. Ash and Misty were surprised by this turn of events.

They can tell just by how these two are battling now that while they are battling as friends, they have changed since their tournament battles earlier. The crowd gave the duo of Pokemon amazing praise as they cheered. This battle was pretty awesome and will be talked about for some time.

"Corsola and Feraligatr are unable to continue battling. This match is a draw. Both competitors are down to their final Pokemon. Please recall your fainted and release your final selections promptly."

The ref stated just as Misty and Ash returned their Pokemon to their balls.

Ash and Misty noticed this, looked at each other, and chuckled to think that this battle was going a lot different from how they thought it would be. A battle of not only friends but also showing how much more confident and how they've grown during this tournament.

"No matter what happens today, Misty, I'm glad to fight you, but I'm here to win not only for my team but also to show how far we've come." Ash said to Misty, who returned her friend's feelings.

"Let's go!" Ash and Misty sent out their last Pokemon, which turned out to be Kingdra for Misty and Lapras for Ash.

Kingdra let out a mighty regal roar, as it's normally known for being the type of Pokemon that is fierce and knows what it's capable of. Lapras also let out her cry. While not as powerful as Kingdra's, it showed her conviction to win today.

While still nervous about how this battle would go out, Lapras felt that she couldn't let Ash down as she could hear cheering from outside the battlefield and stadium. It was then she saw her school and her family there to cheer her on.

Lapras was nervous, but not in a way that scared her. She was nervous to prove to herself and her school that she was capable of moving on and to make her father, also known as the school leader, proud, like she did when she fought him in that match.

"It's fitting your family would be here to see how you can work with me, girl. We're a team, and we'll fight to the end as one." Ash said to Lapras, who smiled and showed determination as she looked at Kingdra, ready to fight back.

"Let the batte…begin!" The ref declared to the amazing roar of the crowd eager to see who would win it all.

"Dragon Dance, now!" Misty and Ash both mirrored their first move, as both Pokemon powered up and were ready to go. Who'd lead off? Why wait to find out?

"Lapras, use Ice Beam now." Lapras sent a massive blast of ice towards Kingdra. Both Kingdras and Misty smiled as Kingdra dodged each blast heading towards him. This was the combination of its natural speed and Dragon Dance.

"Kingdra, close the gap and use Headbutt now." Kingdra charged in at a fast speed and slammed right into Lapras hard, sending her back. She held on, as it was still far from over, not to mention that this was showing how stronger her endurance was.

"Lapras, use Dragon Pulse." Kingdras was blasted with draconic energy just as he landed into the water, sending him straight on the platform. However, he was still capable of going.

Both Misty and Kingdra knew that if they used water-type moves, they would only fizzle out on Lapras, given her ability as a water type. However, they had something else up their sleeve, but they needed to wait for the right moment to act on it.

"Kingdra, Dragon Dance and then use Headbutt sgain." With another boost in speed and strength Kingdra charged in at Lapras. Both Ash and Lapras were waiting for this, and Misty wondered what was going on as Kingdra got close.

"Sing now, Lapras." Lapras launched a song onto Kingdra, who was too close to get out of the way. With little time to react, Ash figured that they could shut down Kingdra's momentum and use this as an advantage. "Now, Thunderbolt."

Lapras sent a massive electric attack on Kingdra, hitting it as Misty closed her eyes, not responding. Was she giving up, or was something else at bay?

'Something is up, Misty. Just let Kingdra take that hit, knowing full well that even if he is part Dragon, it would only do half of the damage or was she expecting this.' Ash thought as he realized that this was a trap as Misty smirked.

"Sleep Talk, Kingdra." Kingdra soon accelerated and then charged at Lapras again.

"Let's show Ash the fruits of our time as a team. Kingdra uses Draco Meteor." Misty said to Ash as he and Lapras were surprised by this. Draco Meteor was a last gambit move. Though powerful as

comets are summoned down from the sky. The attack's recoil sharply reduces the user's Sp. Atk stat. Oftentimes, this move was used to deal the deal, and that's exactly what Misty wanted to do.

"Ash, get Lapras out of there. It's the strongest Dragon-Type move out of all of them." Brock said to Ash as a normal response regardless of who battled out there as a coach.

"Lapras use Dragon Dance and go underwater to dodge it." Doing the power up as she dove underwater, barely dodging each incoming comet as it was shown on the big screen.

"Oh no, you don't. Keep on her, Kingdra. Don't let her get away from your attack." Misty voiced her desire and Kingdra followed through as he had full command of the attack. His line are known for being as ruthless as Gyarados in battle, especially against opponents like Lapras.

Lapras was moving as fast as she could, but it only took one of the Meteors to land on her, the impact powerful enough to send her out of the water, but Ash was not one to waste a sudden move like this.

"Lapras, quick, use Hydro Pump now." In mid-air and with great accuracy, Lapras quickly blasted a massive torrent toward Kingdra, blasting him hard straight toward Misty and into the water.

Misty and Ash wondered if Kingdra was ok as it had not surfaced or was out underwater. Either outcome was proven false as Kingdra let out a massive Roar from underwater, creating a massive Whirlpool that showed that it was ready to end this.

It's pride damaged. Draco Meteor was meant to end this and show the power of what a Dragon type should be. It's why they thrive in battles against opponents like this; however, both Pokemon were panting heavily.

Both Pokemon were at their limit, and both the water types, as well as their Trainers, Misty and Ash, knew this would be the last attack.

"Dragon Dance one last time."

Both Trainers once again mirrored each other.

"Go full power and end this with Giga Impact. Show her your might, and use Outrage!" Ash and Misty stated, respectively. Now with both powered up to the maximum. They stared at each other, ready to strike, and charged right at each other.

They collided head-on, causing a massive explosion and shaking the battlefield more than when Misty and Paul battled with their Gyarados.

Everyone was covering themselves from the impact, as was Zapdos. Even from his angle, it was near impossible to see until the dust settled; not even he could fly out of that gust of winds coming from it, even if he had a choice to leave.

The smoke finally cleared as if it had lasted for a long time. Both Lapras and Kingdra were sent flying back hard on the platforms, panting heavily, their pride keeping them from falling over. They were at their limit, as one of them had to go down.

One finally did. It was Lapras, much to her dismay.

"Lapras is unable to battle. Kingdra wins. The winner of this year's Whirl Cup is Misty Waterflower from Cerulean City!" The ref announced, and was surprised that she had won.

Kingdra was about to fall, but she ran over to him and helped him stay up after that.

"You did great out there, Kingdra. No matter who remained standing, you battled hard out there/ for me. Thank you." Misty said to her Pokemon, who bowed it's head in honor and respect of her Trainer.

"That would've ended either way, Misty. I wasn't going to let this team down. Mastering Draco Meteor was the proof of how far we've come." Kingdra said to Misty, who nodded as they saw Ash walking over to Lapras, who was happy that it was Misty who gave her a good battle but sad that she lost.

She was happy that Misty gave her a good battle but was disappointed in herself because she failed the team, as Lapras spoke up to Ash.

"Sorry, Ash. I couldn't nail a win for the team." Lapras said to Ash, who smiled and petted her horn, which is her good spot, especially on the back.

"No, we battled well regardless of who won today. We all did a great job. If there's anyone who deserved that win, it was Misty. This is not a sign of any shortcomings on you as my Pokemon or I as a Trainer. She was just the better trainer today." Ash said to Lapras, who was purring from her horn rubbing and bowed her head to meet Ash's forehead, seeing that Ash was taking this loss much better than he usually does. She could see her father from afar as he nodded, proud of her and proving herself. He knew after this reunion and experience that she would want to be with Ash for some time, and, with a knowing look, he made it known that she would be welcome back when she was ready.

"From the looks of it, you are staying on the team after this girl until you are ready," Ash said to Lapras, who nuzzled him as she felt the same way.

Both Misty and Kingdra came over to Ash and Lapras. Misty had a smile on her face.

"Well, Ash, I'm not sure what happened yesterday that made you different from today, but you did well today and are someone I'm glad to battle. Just let me know when you're ready for a rematch." Misty said to Ash, who chuckled and rubbed the back of his head.

"I'm still the same Ash, you know, Misty, and I'll tell you once we get our Pokemon healed. I decided I'd rather not tell you today because it might have affected our battle, but I'm glad you won. You deserve it." Ash said to Misty as both their Pokemon shared the same feeling. Misty and Ash shook each other's hands and waved to the crowd, and everyone gave a standing ovation to this battle.

Ash and Misty returned their Pokemon to their balls and headed out of the battlefield.

In the sky

Zapdos watched from afar and could tell that while Ash lost, he handled it better than other Trainers he'd seen in the past.

He smiled at this as he took off to the fourth Island, knowing that right now, he did not need to be there for the closing ceremony.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, while many were upset that Ash lost, they could tell that he handled it well, especially from Fearow's perspective.

'It seems like he took my advice from yesterday and used it to give a good battle out there. Here's hoping that you are watching this and are impressed, my friend, because right now, Ash is getting started on his journey to maturity. Nicely done, Ash,' Fearow thought upon watching all this going on.

Meanwhile, back in the Islands, Brock joined Misty and Ash as they healed their Pokemon during a break before the closing ceremony for the Whirl Cup. It was as good a time as any to tell Brock and Misty what had happened the day before.

Ash explained what happened back at the ranch, from the merger's failure to what was going on next. Both Misty and Brock were surprised that all of that happened in one day.

"Even after all that, the merger didn't happen, not even with allies from Pidgeot?" Misty asked Ash, who looked troubled as Brock spoke up.

"To think that just one member speaking up and everything turned against all of you." Brock said as Ash looked down as he was there, and he still couldn't believe that happened; however, what Ash said about Fearow's contact here in Johto now caught Misty's attention, and she figured it might explain that off feeling Ash felt and what happened before the battle started.

"Ash, you don't think that Fearow's contact was the one you felt was watching during the entire fight all this time?" Misty said to Ash, who agreed that this was more than likely the right answer.

"Fearow mentioned that he might be in the area, and we might run into each other sooner than later. I think he's been watching my battle recently. I never noticed until now, especially after what Fearow told me and all." Ash said to Misty and Brock, who looked at each other, wondering who it could be.

"However, he warned me to watch how I approach him and not to try and find him. We'll know when we meet him. That's all I'm going to leave this on. If that's the case, I don't want to show that I'm desperate to find him and ask him to join the team, especially with his issues with humans.

Right now, we should focus on the journey ahead and meet that when we hit that road," Ash said to Misty and Brock, who were admittedly taken aback by Ash's mature perspective.

With the small break now over, both Ash and Misty made it to the platforms of the stadium stands. Due making it to Finals both were presented with a prize for each. One was the Water Pendant and the other was a Dragon Scale.

"I'll take the pendant, Ash. I already have a Kingdra, and even though I have a Horsea, I am fine with you taking it," Misty said to Ash, who found the offer pleasing.

"Then I'll take the Dragon Scale, especially since my own Seadra can evolve from it," Ash said as both took their prizes.

Misty was also given a big trophy as the winner, and the crowd gave out the last applause. They were very appreciative of the battle they witnessed and would use it as a measuring stick of the potential talent Trainers who made the Finale should reach for the next few years.

"With that, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Whirl Cup is closing. See you next time. I'm hoping a new set of trainers wows in the years to come, and I wish the best of luck to everyone's journey, " the announcer said as the ceremony came to a close.

With the Whirl Cup now over, Misty won. Ash and the others leave the tournament with high spirits and a lot of experience. What is next for our heroes? With the return to Olivine City on the horizon and more adventures we will join our heroes soon as their journey continues…

Meanwhile, back on the fourth island, we see Zapdos joined by Lugia and her son, Silver the Lugia.

Zapdos and Lugia were on land while Silver was playing in the water. Silver was a bit hyper from watching all that great battling, so Zapdos chuckled at this.

"Hey, Uncle Zapdos, do you want to join us in the water? It's great!" Silver said to Zapdos, who politely shook his head.

"Sorry, kid, but you know that water and electric types like me don't mix well, and I don't want to face the wrath of both your parents, let alone Ho-oh." Zapdos said to Silver, who pouted but understood.

"Why don't you go see if your human friend is still up and keep in contact with me if you are planning on staying with him tonight?

Uncle Zapdos and I have to talk about today, dear?" Lugia said to her son, who nodded and went further around the Island.

"He's a lot like his father, hyper, that's for sure." Zapdos said to Lugia, who chuckled, nodded, and added.

"I'm making sure that he understands why we are the guardians of these islands and shows him that battling is part of it. Though I'm surprised you didn't react when I mentioned his human friend there, Zapdos." Lugia said to Zapdos, who shook his head.

"You know that I don't force my issues on other Pokemon, and he's just a kid. I don't mind that both him and his friend almost grew up with each other. He's treated my nephew well, so I'm fine with it." Zapdos said as he had a lot on his mind.

Lugia giggled as Zapdos noticed. "What's so funny?"

"You didn't think I didn't see that smile you made during that match today, Zapdos. So does that mean you changed your mind about Ash?" Lugia teased Zapdos, who grumbled when she said that.

"You really need to leave my personal space in my mind alone like that, Lugia. It's just as bad as you sneaking up on me a couple of days ago." Zapdos said and Lugia giggled. She was trying to be nice to him and wanted to reply but held back as Zapdos continued.

"I will admit that he did impress me out there. Something about him and how he battled and handled that loss shows me that he doesn't care if he wins or loses as long as everyone gives it their all.

I still don't see what's so special about him in terms of why Arceus and your mate made him The Chosen One, but I'm still unsure if he's worthy of my time as my Trainer." Zapdos said this time.

There was still such a thing he felt Ash needed to be. Seeing what and how he does things is one thing, as someone who relies a bit too much on luck to get results, still made Zapdos cautious of this boy. Still, this battle showed that with time and guidance, he could be the one. Even he was surprised at this train of thought and Lugia caught onto that in his tone of voice.

"You're still unsure why Latias, Suicune, and even Celebi talked heavily about him, huh, Zapdos?" Lugia said, showing how much the other legendaries were talking about him. He looked away, unsure how to respond, as a voice called out.

"Is it what makes you question if he's a good person?" A flying type came their way and landed right next to them; it was Ho-oh.

Zapdos and Lugia bowed before her as she held her wing like a hand, indicating that it wasn't necessary.

"Relax, you two. I'm not here on business, and I have Lugia's permission to be here, given you contacted me not long ago." Ho-oH said to Zapdos, and Lugia placed their wings back in their perched position, whistling as though she hadn't done anything of the sort. Zapdos glared at Lugia.

"You contacted her even when I told you that I have permission to be here, Lugia?" Zapdos told Lugia, expressing that he wasn't happy and that she had gone behind his back like that. Lugia tried to deflect the situation and asked.

"Not to question you about you being here, but…what are you really here for Lady Ho-oH?" Lugia said to Ho-oH. 'You cheeky brat.' Ho-oH thought before she answered.

"I came to see how the report on what was going on here in the islands is going, to check on Lugia and Silver and to see how you were doing. So no, she didn't go behind your back, Zapdos. My intent was always to come here. Lugia just made me see it needed to happen a little sooner than I was originally planning to." Ho-oH said to Zapdos, who calmed down and just accepted her answer.

"We both searched these islands in the sky and sea, and nothing came up. I know that Team Rocket isn't going to quit until they find Lugia and her son, especially since one of your ancestor's guardian descendants was freed from their control.

We both agreed that they are here somewhere and where we can't reach or see them." Zapdos explained to Ho-oh, who bowed her head in agreement.

"I have no argument about your assessment about them still being in these islands. I feel they are waiting until things die down from the Whirl Cup to start their operations.

It's how we've seen them operate on past attempts to capture some of the other Legendaries." Ho-oH said to Zapdos that she knew they weren't going to stay hiding for too long as Ho-oH continued.

"What about the other assignment I gave to you, Zapdos?" Ho-oh waited to hear Zapdos' reply as he looked back at the third Island.

"I will admit he seems like he's a good human, but why ask me out of all Legendaries to keep an eye on him? I planned on coming over here anyway to help make sure that Lugia and her son are safe, hence why I asked for your permission.

So then, why me and why Ash, of all people? You never gave me an answer to why.

Why not those like Suicune, Moltres, or even Latias herself, given that Ash has met or interacted with them?" Zapdos said to Ho-oh, who was listening, and let him finish.

"I understand Lugia here 'cause she helped his Pokemon who were in danger, but I still don't see why he's the so-called Chosen One. That Shamouti fable, riddle, prophecy, whatever you wanna call it, was written so long ago, when many of us never believed a Chosen One was real or could be real, and suddenly it's this Trainer specifically?

Is it cause of the rumors about me wanting my own Trainer? If so, yes, I am looking for one of my own one day. But Ash, of all people, can you not see that he's not ready?"

Zapdos finally finished his rant. He is happy that these questions that bothered him so much may finally be answered.

"Before I answer that lot of questions, I need your honest answer to this question.

Do you fault Ash for what happened to Latias' brother, given that he was there and saw what happened to him?" Ho-oh said to Zapdos, who was taken aback by this and shouted.

"What kind of question is that? Of course, I don't. What happened to Latios was not Ash's fault, nor was it something that could have been done differently. He sacrificed himself to save the city they were asked to guard after their parents passed.

No one expected what transpired to happen as it did, and like Latias, no one amongst the Legendaries blamed Ash or his friends for what happened to him.

Sorry for my outburst, Lady Ho-oh." Zapdos apologized for what he said as she shook her head.

"No worries about that, Zapdos. I wanted to know how you felt about being there when that happened and yet you question why so many speak highly about him? What you just said about him being willing to help is why they do." Ho-oh said to Zapdos, who was taken aback by this as Ho-oh continued.

"Let me ask you another question since you are searching for a Trainer.

What do you want in one? What are your expectations for a trainer, especially when there are not many humans like Ash out there?" Ho-oh asked her fellow legendary as he glared at her. He knew better than to do this but the question irritated him to no end. Still he answered.

"I want one who cares about his Pokemon. One that puts them first and others second, who's willing to risk themselves to help others...and one who isn't evil at all..." As he finished Zapdos was slowly realizing what he was saying.

"Just like Ash. I agree that he's not perfect; he makes mistakes, but he's the most selfless person out there. It showed the day he was willing to risk his life to save his Pikachu, the day he started his journey to save his starter after a slow start for them. Its why I blessed his journey that day. That day, I knew deep in my core that he was the one Arceus foretold would be there for the world when it needed him most. He would act with valor and honor, seeking nothing in return. He would face these insane challenges just because he loved Pokemon.

That is why I showed myself to him that day, Zapdos! That is why I trust him with my feather. He had to battle to earn it with another owner of the guardian descendants to prove who was the rightful owner, and that's why I trust you, of all legendaries, to watch over him and see for yourself how everything you've been wanting in a Trainer is embodied in him, Zapdos." Ho-oh said to Zapdos, who was left speechless and looked down almost in shame. Truly, there was truth in her words, but could Ash really be the one for him?

"I'm not saying this lightly. Give him a chance. You won't regret it." Ho-oH said as she soon prepared for the flight.

"I'll be taking my leave, you two. Zapdos, everyone sees the potential in Ash, and yet they do not join his team despite wanting to, given that they are still needed in their respective areas. Latias is chomping at the bit to join him one day while you can still roam around your territory and are now on a hunt for a trainer of your own.

When you feel he's ready, I'm sure you will let him know. By then, I'm sure he'll be ready to be your Trainer as much as you want to be his Pokemon. Until then, tell Silver I said hi and hope he's doing well.

I bid you farewell." Ho-oh said as she took off. Her majestic presence leaving a rainbow trail as she flew off.

Zapdos was still speechless. What he views as the true nature of humans and what he wants in a trainer often conflict with what he wants.

As he looked at the third island again, was this boy about to change that? He pondered as Lugia noticed.

"I'll leave you to your thoughts, Zapdos, and go check on my son. I'll see you tomorrow." Lugia said to Zapdos, who nodded slowly, appreciative of being left alone to deal with his thoughts.

"Yeah, see you tomorrow. Lugia." Zapdos said as she dove into the water.

'Is he really a fit for my trainer? I feel he's not ready to be that now but…' Zapdos said, now snapping out of his state of shockness.

'...I'll keep an eye on him still and see how things go if something does happen here in the islands. If need be, I'll step in and help him if things get hairy.

Ash, you have already shown my interest today and impressed me. You better not make me a fool by trusting you. If letting my guard down in the high hopes that you can be my Trainer leads to something were to happen to either Lugia or Silver, I'd never forgive myself.' Zapdos finished his train of thought and went back to the sky.

Stay tuned.

Done and done. Sorry for the wait, folks, and I hope you enjoyed your 2025 so far. I worked on it since Wednesday, but man, was this done real quickly. Don't be surprised if that's not gonna happen a lot during the rest of the story. We had to cover A LOT in the story's first half, and we covered some loose ends, especially with the flock merger. As for whom Fearow is referring to, you figured out who it is. If not, we'll get to that later on. Speaking of the merger, we'll return to that near the end of the story. Don't worry about that, folks. Hope you all didn't mind Ash losing the Whirl Cup, but technically, this was Misty's big chance to prove herself, and don't think that cause Ash is like this doesn't mean that he isn't the same Ash, you all know. With that said I'm going to be doing something next chapter along with my Beta Reader so be ready for that until then see you next time.
