Chapter 8

Dena spotted the Lexus ahead of him as it turned at a light to head for the interstate. He quickly got around the cars in front of him and turned behind to follow him. He left room between the cars as he kept pace with Sam when he merged onto the interstate. Sam didn't seem to notice him as he was in the lane, one over from Sam and several car lengths back. He didn't know where Sam was heading but he wasn't going to let him get away.

They drove for over an hour before Sam signaled to change lanes. He was ahead of Dean in the same lane now and fifteen minutes later he signaled to exit the interstate. At the top of the ramp, he turned left to head for a small town that was off the main highway.

Sam pulled into a motel and stopped at the office to get a room. He got out and looked around for a moment when he got the feeling he was being watched. Once he registered, got his key and came out to move the car around the building and park in front of his room.

Dean sat at the gas station across the street as he watched Sam. Once the Lexus went around the building, he drove to a motel a few buildings down and got his own room. Dean quickly checked in and took his bags to the room before coming out and walking back down to the other motel.

Sam put his bags in the room and decided to get something to eat before settling in for the night. He grabbed his keys and room key before stepping from the room and walking toward a diner that was below the motel. He didn't see Dean duck behind a sign when he saw Sam heading his way. He scooted around it and watched Sam continue to the diner and go inside. Since he knew where Sam was, Dean ducked into a fast-food place to eat and got a seat where he could see.

Sam came out of the diner and looked around catching someone out of the corner of his eyes that quickly stepped into the shadows. He pretended not to notice and walked down the street to a convenience store and went inside. He hurried to the back of the store and found the back exit and slipped outside to sneak around the side to see if he was being followed.

Dean walked to the convenience store and looked inside to search for Sam. He walked toward the door but couldn't see him. Thinking he might be in the restroom, Dean moved to the corner of the building and waited as he kept an eye on the brightly lit inside of the store.

Sam moved quietly around the building and saw Dean looking at the front doors. He was in full hunter mode as he crept toward the unsuspecting hunter. Dean realized too late someone was behind him when everything went black. Sam knocked him out and watched him slump to the ground. He quickly grabbed his arms and pulled him around the side of the building before anyone saw them.

"You again," Sam growled when he got a good look at his face. "What the hell do you want with me?" He felt around in Dean's pockets and found car keys, a wallet and a motel room key for the motel below his. "I think we need to have a little talk," Sam mumbled as he pulled his belt off to secure his arms behind him.

A plan began to form in his head as he walked to the motel Dean was staying at and found his room. He hated to give up his room, but he was going to find out why this stranger was following him. After opening the door, Sam went in and got the two bags from the bed. He stepped back outside and looked at the car parked in front, arching his eyebrows. The black Chevy Impala was a nice-looking car and had been taken care of.

After depositing the bags in the trunk, Sam drove the Impala down to his motel and hurried in to get his bags. He added them to the trunk and drove to the convenience store to park in the shadows where he had left Dean's body. When he was sure no one was around, he got out and tossed Dean into the trunk and slammed the lid. He needed to find some more private place to conduct his interrogation in case he needed to be more persuasive. Sam pulled up a map on his cell phone and tried to find an abandoned house or cabin he could use. When he found something promising, he cranked the Impala and listened to the growl of the engine before driving from the parking lot to find the road he wanted.

Dean groaned as he started coming to and jerked on his arms to find them tied behind his back. He tried to clear his vision as someone walked by him.

"About time you woke up," Sam said jerking Dean's head back by his hair and forcing some water into his mouth.

Dean sputtered and choked as he tried to swallow the liquid to wet his dry throat and mouth. When he stopped coughing, he stared bleary eyed at his brother.

"Sa…Sa'y…" he croaked clearing his throat so he could talk. "Sammy, what the hell," he questioned as he pulled on his arms trying to get free.

"I want to know why you are following me?" Sam demanded in an angry voice.

"I've been looking for you for weeks," Dean told him. "We had a fight, and you stormed out."

"So, you know me then?"

"Hell, yeah I know you dumbass. You're my little brother. What's wrong with you?"

"How do I know you're telling the truth? I was kidnapped by demons but got away."

"They weren't the first ones to kidnap you, Sammy. A couple of hunters kidnapped you and then the demons killed them and took you."

"I don't like that name, don't call me that," Sam demanded, sneering at Dean.

"Fine, whatever, just cut me loose and we can talk." He watched Sam pull a knife from his pocket and was shocked when instead of freeing him, he cut his arm, making him hiss in pain. "Damn it Sam, let me go."

Sam looked at him with hooded eyes as he walked around him twirling the knife in his hand.

"Well, it looks like you're not a shapeshifter. You know your license has a different name on it and then there's the credit card with yet another name." He took a flask and tossed holy water in Dean's face but didn't see any reaction to it.

"I'm not a demon either," Dean snapped spitting holy water on the floor. "I'm a hunter like you. We use aliases when we're on a case. Do you know you're a hunter?"

"Yes, but I don't know you. You could be an enemy of mine trying to trick me."

"Your name is Sam Winchester, you were born May 2, 1983, in Lawrence, Kansas. Your parents are John and Mary Winchester, and you have one brother, Dean Winchester."

"I don't believe you!" Sam screamed as he punched Dean in the face, snapping his head to the side and splitting his lip. Dean grimaced in pain and spit blood to the side before looking at Sam. "You want to hurt me, don't you, because I can do things. Things I'm not supposed to be able to do."

"No, that's not true," Dean sighed only to be backhanded by Sam. He could feel the rage coming off his brother and couldn't understand why he was doing this. "You must have gotten a head injury and lost your memory."

"I know who I am. I'm Sam Winchester. I hunt monsters."

"That's good. Do you remember Bobby Singer? He's another hunter, and sort of our surrogate father. He taught us a lot."

"Singer," Sam grumbled as a glimpse of an older, bearded man appeared in his mind and then it was gone. He tried to remember hunters he had worked with, and a couple of names came to mind.

Knowing he wasn't getting anywhere with Sam, Dean decided to call in reinforcements.

"Cas, I need help," he whispered. "I found Sam, but he's not right."

"Hello Sam, hello Dean," Castiel greeted him.

Sam whirled around quickly and pulled his gun when Castiel spoke. He glared at him and fired two shots hitting him in the chest. He gasped in surprise when the stranger looked down at the holes in his clothes and then back at Sam. He couldn't see any blood from the wounds and knew he wasn't a demon because he couldn't feel a black soul inside of him. Before Sam could do anything else, Castiel disarmed him and touched his forehead putting him into a deep sleep. Sam's body crumbled to the ground at Dean's feet.

"What did you do to him?" Dean asked as he pulled on his bindings.

"He is only asleep," Castiel explained. "He seemed irrational and uncooperative. I thought that was the easiest way to control him."

"Well, don't just stand there, untie me," Dean complained.

"As you wish." Castiel stepped towards him and broke the ropes holding him.

Dean quickly dropped to his knees so he could check Sam before getting to his feet. He drew a deep breath and looked around for a moment.

"Sammy doesn't remember me. Can you fix him?"

"I cannot bring back memories that have been lost."

"Help me get him to the car so we can head for Bobby's. You're coming with me too to help watch over Sammy even if he is asleep. Can you do this for me?"

"Yes," Castiel replied.

Dean grabbed Sam under the arms and waited for Castiel to take his legs. The angel didn't say anything else as they put Sam in the back seat. He got in the car with Dean and wondered what he had in mind. He could feel his concern and worry for his brother.

"I better call Bobby and let him know I've found Sammy and we're heading his way," Dean mumbled more to himself than to Castiel. He dialed the number and listened to it ring.

"Hello," Bobby said.

"Hey Bobby, it's Dean. I found Sammy."

"Is he okay?"

"No, not really. Castiel put him to sleep and we're heading your way."

"Alright son. I'll leave the porch light on for you."

"Thanks Bobby. We'll see you soon." Dean hung up and cranked the Impala. He looked in the back at his brother for a moment before turning back around and sighing as he began to wind down from his adrenaline rush. All the stress and worry he had was fading away and he was relieved that he had Sam now.

"You know man, if I didn't know bullets wouldn't hurt you, I would have freaked out when Sammy shot you. Guess he didn't remember that either."

"He didn't recognize me," Castiel offered.

"When he was kidnapped, something must have happened, maybe he was hit in the head or something to cause memory loss. He said he knew his name and he was a hunter, but he didn't know me and I'm not sure he knew Bobby."

"I can scan him when we get to Bobby's to see if there were any issues that have healed."

"Thanks. You can read minds, right?"

"Yes, I can."

"Could you do that with Sammy?"

"I'm not sure since he has consumed a great deal of demon blood."

"Crap! The demons who had him must have been giving it to him. Guess we better put him in the panic room to be on the safe side. He had withdrawals before, but I don't know what that will do to him this time if he doesn't get the blood."

"I will do what I can."

"There's gotta be something we can do to help him," Dean huffed. "I can't keep him locked in the panic room just because he doesn't know me." He rolled his shoulders and neck as he drove down the highway.

"I can drive a car if you'd like me to take over?'

"Not on your life," Dean exclaimed as he glared at Castiel. "No one drives Baby but me. I rarely let Sammy drive her." Dean snorted and turned on the radio to let music fill the car. He was done talking for now.
