Chapter 1
He stands at the window and investigates the warehouse, his eyes locked on the tall figure that he would know anywhere. His blood runs cold as he watches his brother cut the arm of a man and catch the blood in a container. He doesn't understand it until he sees the man's eyes turn black while he curses his brother. He was a demon, but why was his brother collecting blood like a vampire.
A sudden sharp intake of air makes Dean see double as he watches his brother take a sip of the blood before pouring it into a bottle. Words from the angel came back to him and he realized this is what Castiel was talking about when he said Sam was going down a dark path and needed to be stopped. Dean closed his eyes and drew in a slow, deep breath as he tried to control his emotions and think straight.
The first thing Dean knew he had to do was get rid of the bitch demon Ruby. He knew there was something off about her and there had to be a reason for her singling Sammy out and acting like she wanted to help. He slunk away from the building because he had seen enough. He felt for the demon killing knife that was on his belt as a plan began to form in his head.
He slipped into the Impala and headed back to the motel they were staying at. He didn't want Sammy to realize there was anything wrong when he came back. He had thought he was so smart sneaking out when he thought Dean was asleep. Dean had not slept deeply since he had returned from Hell and even a slight disturbance had him waking up instantly.
After parking the Impala back in front of their room, Dean got out and let himself in. He quickly stripped off his jacket and long-sleeved shirt before untying his boots and toeing them off so he could throw himself back down onto the bed. He didn't bother getting under the covers since that was how he went to sleep.
About forty minutes later, Sam carefully opened the door and slipped inside, letting the door close gently behind him. He cast his gaze to the bed closest to the door and saw the outline of his brother's body lying on top of the bed. Silently, he crept to the other bed and sat on it. He took his boots off and then jacket, dropping them on the floor before stretching out. He sighed with relief that Dean hadn't woken while he was gone and confronted him. He wasn't ready to tell him about what he could do yet. With the demon blood rushing through his veins, it seemed to calm him and let him relax so he could drift to sleep.
Sam woke with a jerk and reached for the gun under his pillow as he sat up and looked around. He looked at the other bed and found it empty. He got up and looked in the bathroom to see it was empty too. A piece of paper on the nightstand caught his eye and he picked it up recognizing his brother's bold handwriting. 'Gone to get breakfast' he read and let out the breath he was holding.
He dropped the gun into his bag and grabbed clean clothes to go take a shower. Sam yawned as he closed the door of the bathroom and sat his clothes on the sink. After starting the water, he stripped out of his dirty clothes, noticing drops of blood splattered across the shirt reminding him of what he had recently done. He adjusted the water and stepped under the hot spray letting it beat on his face for a moment before dropping his head to wet his hair.
Dean heard the water running in the bathroom as he opened the door of the room. He sat the bags of food on the small table and hurried to his brother's bed. It took a few minutes for him to find Sam's cell phone and unlock it. He quickly scrolled through his contacts and took out his cell phone to transfer two numbers to his own. He was sure they were numbers for Ruby. After turning the cell off, he replaced it and looked toward the bathroom door when the water shut off.
"Hey," Sam greeted his brother when he stepped from the bathroom in a cloud of steam.
"Got food," Dean grunted as he continued to eat his food. He motioned to the bag sitting beside him.
"Thanks," Sam replied dropping his dirty clothes on his duffle before joining his brother at the table. He pulled out breakfast sandwiches and unwrapped one to eat. He kept his eyes downcast because he could feel Dean's eyes on him.
"Are you okay?" Dean asked him. He continued when Sam didn't answer. "You've been jittery, nervous and sort of spacey the past couple of days."
"Oh, yeah, I'm good," Sam answered. "Was just feeling a little under the weather is all. But I'm good now."
"I figure after we finish eating, we'll split up to cover more ground. I'll drop you by the library so you can do some research on the town, and I'll go check out the crime scenes."
"You sure you want to split up?"
"Yeah, I don't like the feeling of this town and want to finish this job so we can get the hell out of here."
"Ummm…Okay, whatever," Sam mumbled with a shrug. He decided not to question Dean's decision.
"Well, finish up so we can get started." Dean got up and grabbed the files to get addresses from them. He picked up the laptop to look them up and glanced at Sam before pulling up a program to trace phone numbers. He typed in the first number and waited for it to find the address and memorized it. After doing it again, he found both numbers at the same location. After closing out the program and dumping the history so Sam couldn't see what he was doing, he got up and headed for the bathroom.
"I'm ready," Sam told his brother when he stepped from the bathroom.
"Good," Dean replied grabbing his keys and room key before heading for the door. He could hear Sam behind him and continued out the door to the Impala. Dean drove from the parking lot and headed across town to the library. He hoped Sam wouldn't realize that he was trying to get him out of the way so he could do what needed to be done. "I'll come back by and pick you up."
"Alright," Sam said. He got out and closed the door watching Dean drive away. He couldn't get past the feeling that Dean wasn't telling him something. When the Impala was out of sight, he turned and walked toward the library doors.

Dean pulled into the parking lot of the gas station and drove around to the back to park out of sight. He got out and walked around the building and down the street to the motel. He looked at his cell and saw the red dot was still located at the motel.
After doing a brief check to be sure there were no cameras around to record him. He stopped at a door and stilled himself to fall into the role he needed to play. Dean raised his hand and knocked on the door.
"What are you doing here?" Ruby asked Dean after she opened the door and glanced past him looking for Sam.
"I wanted to talk to you," Dean said acting worried and stressed as he looked at the floor before bringing his gaze back up.
"Where's Sam?" she asked in a cautious voice.
"Doing some research. Can I come in?"
"Sure, what do you want to talk about?"
"My brother," Dean sighed. "I'm worried about him and hope you can fill in some blanks for me."
"About your brother?" she asked as she turned her back on him and walked into the room.
"Yeah, what happened while I was in Hell? He said you helped him during that time. That you saved his life."
"Your brother had hit rock bottom when I…." Ruby started as she turned around to face Dean with a smirk on her face.
"I bet he did," Dean sneered as he drove the knife into her stomach and twisted it. "I know you were using my brother for your own evil purposes and that's going to stop."
Ruby stared at him in utter shock as her black soul began to flash in and out while streaks of red raced through her body before her demon soul died and left her body. She went limp, and Dean let her slide to the floor as he extracted the knife and wiped it on her jeans.
"Good riddance bitch," Dean snarled before stepping back to the door and letting himself out. He headed down the walkway to circle around to where he had left the Impala so he wouldn't be seen. He drove away from the gas station and headed for the first crime scene to check it out. Step one of his plan was done, now he would move to step two.
They were still working on the case, and he wanted to finish it before dealing with Sam. His little brother had a lot of explaining to do.
