A/N: Considering this is my third installment to this particular story I figured that this is from now on going to be the main and only story! So just ignore the other chapters that aren't apart of "Can't Learn a Thing." With that being said enjoy the chapter and feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments. Criticisms are always welcomed, they help me know what I should improve on ;)
Summary: Duncan and Courtney discuss what happened in the previous chapter and Duncan makes a shocking discovery about Ethan.
Can't Learn a Thing
By Cherrygems
It was near the end of Courtney's fifth period class when she went to check her email and noticed she had received one from Duncan. It was about the incident that had occurred during his class just a few hours ago.
He wanted to see her after school...she couldn't. She doesn't want to see his face ever again. It was way too embarrassing. He humiliated her in front of the class! Courtney had never been yelled at by a teacher. After all she was a top student for crying out loud! All her teachers appreciated her if anything for being such a good kid!
Plus she was yelled at by Duncan...and he was never one to get so upset with a student. And for some reason him being mad at her made her uneasy. They were on good terms...she was decently okay with him and his class. He was still an idiot in her mind but a tolerable idiot at least. She actually found him amusing at times...but now she just felt uncomfortable and awkward at the thought of having to confront him.
The bell rang and Courtney sighed as she got up from her desk. Walking out and making her way to his class she thought of what to even say to him.
Hi, i'm sorry for talking during your class, it won't happen again.
Actually that was good enough. She would say that and all will be well. Duncan will forgive her and she would sit back and return to her old seat next to Ethan.
Oh! Ethan!
The whole reason she got in trouble in the first place. They were having a good time getting to know each other. Turns out he transferred from the neighboring high school because of some issues he had experienced with his former school's lack of enriching extracurriculars. Courtney offered to show him to the speech and debate club, after all she was the president and could be in use of new members.
The thought of Ethan brought a question to Courtney. Why was Duncan so pressed about them talking? He was fine when other people were loud and obnoxious during his class. So why not her? Maybe he expected more from her, to set an example of a good student for the class..that has to be it.
Courtney had reached the door to his class. Her hand hovered over the knob with hesitation. Why was she so nervous? Whatever, she has to get over it.
She opened the door and peeked inside
"Ehm uh Mr. Evans?"
"Oh uh hey Courtney come in please." Duncan said swiveling his chair to face her. Courtney slowly closed the door behind her, then approached his desk. She was walking with caution, like she was tip toeing on ice. It was clear to her Duncan was on edge. She did not want to hear another rampage from him, cause at this point she felt like anything could set him off because she had noticed his grumpy demeanor as of lately.
"Sooo you wanted to see me?" She asked, feeling as it would be best to lead the conversation. Duncan sighed and looked down at the papers resting on his desk.
"Yeah. Look Courtney i'm sorry for being a jerk earlier I know it was out of character for me."
Courtney fumbled with the straps of her backpack. Duncan had this effect on her. He made her heart feel like it was going to fall into her stomach. In an anxious way of course. Especially during the past few weeks. It felt like everything she did he was watching. And he just looked irritated. It couldn't be because she was talking to Ethan so much, right?
"It's okay, i'm sorry for talking during your class. I should have been paying attention." She slightly muttered. Ducan looked at her and flashed her a slight smile.
"Nah it's okay I shouldn't have reacted that way...I guess..well it's just that since Ethan's been here you seem to always be a bit distracted thats all." He admitted while scratching the back of his neck. Courtney blushed in embarrassment, it was so unlike her to be caught up in a boy that she stops listening during class. And the fact that Duncan noticed made her ashamed.
"Yeah...I guess it's just well I don't really talk to guys that much...and i'm just kind of yeah.." Courtney trailed off. Gosh! Why did she even say that! To Duncan nonetheless. He did not need to hear about her man troubles. This was her personal life she was talking about..it seemed inappropriate to talk about that stuff around adults, especially her teacher. Courtney has always been set on keeping her school life away from her personal life.
Jesus, Courtney! You're making a fool out of yourself!
Duncan simply let out a small laugh as he rose out of his chair and approached Courtney, with his hands in his pockets, and she couldn't help but notice his height. He wasn't crazy tall but he had a few inches on her where she had to look up at him. With that she also took in their new strangely close proximity.
"Is that so? I don't think I could imagine you having issues with getting a guy." He said with a slight smirk to which he immediately hid. But it was too late Courtney had noticed it.
It was suddenly hot in the room.
What was that? Is he inferring that she's attractive? Is that wrong for him to acknowledge...it feels like it is?
Duncan noticed her slight unease and took a step back from her. "I just mean that even though you're a pain in my ass your a good kid."
Courtney snorted at the stament "Please, i'm a pain in you're ass? Imagine how much more annoying you are to me." Now this is how they usually interacted. Not in an awkward tense manner.
Duncan took his hands out if his pockets and crossed them over his chest. "Whatever you say missy, but I think i'm quite the delight." He said with a toothy grin. Childish really but it made Courtney smile.
"Well then you clearly have an obscured opinion." She said with a slight giggle.
This is what Duncan had been missing for the past few weeks. Courtney and him poking fun at each other and getting a few laughs in.
"Okay Court you can get going now...I totally forgot we were here after class and you probably want to get home now." He reminded her after glancing at his wrist watch.
"Oh yeah! My parents are probably going to wondering why i'm taking so long." Courtney stated brushing past him and reaching for the door knob.
"Right. I'll see you tomorrow then." Duncan said as he turned to watch her leave
"Yes, um bye now." Courtney felt like she was lingering..she doesn't know why but it seemed like both of them we're almost waiting for something.
Just like that it was back to akward. Courtney thought as she finally opened the door and left the classroom.
Duncan sighed and went back to his chair. At least he was able to clear the air with Courtney. Ugh he couldn't help but think back to the details of the conversation. Like bringing up Ethan? Now she knows he has been watching her talk to him and feels uncomfortable by it. Hell she could probably put it together that he was jealous.
Ew what no. I am not jealous of Ethan and Courtney.
And don't even get him started on the 'I find it hard to believe you have issues finding guy' like the way he said it he had to admit was well a bit creepy. He doesn't know why he felt compelled to say it. But it is true...Courtney is...well she's a pretty girl. Could it have been wrong for him to point it out?
Yes, she's not someone you should be saying is good looking?
Duncan had to let out a frustrated groan. Why is he feeling like this? He's a damn mess! Why is it so hard to have a normal conversation with Courtney lately? Even before she got to his class he felt an overwhelming amount of nerves. His palms were sweaty and his stomach felt almost weak in anticipation to see and talk to her.
Duncan got up from his chair and reached for his bag. When he went to grab it he could hear people talking in the hallway. The voice sounded familiar...but it couldn't be school was out already, the hallways are usually empty by then. Everyone is already home or in respective classrooms for club meetings.
Curiously Duncan approached the door and put his ear up to it to better hear the voice.
"I'm probably gonna ask her tomorrow."
Oh yeah, he can tell for sure who it was. It was Ethan. Why was he outside Duncan's class and who was he talking to?
"Oh really? Is she that hot?"
"For sure man, you should see for yourself, plus her body is banging."
"Hey good for you man..you gonna try and score with her?"
"Hell yeah, I would be an idiot to miss a chance to tap that."
"If you say so. Why are we here anyway?"
"Oh I left my sports bag in here. Hold up let me get it real quick."
Oh crap he's coming in.
Duncan quickly dropped his backpack near his desk and plopped back into his desk chair. And watched Ethan walk in.
"Hi Mr. Evan's I apologize for interrupting, i'm just here to get my bag." Ethan announced getting his stuff from the back of the class. The switch from the way he was talking to his friend to the nice guy front almost gave Duncan whiplash.
"Oh um." Duncan cleared his throat. "Yeah go ahead."
"Alright, i'll see you tomorrow Mr. Evans, have a good rest of your day." Ethan saluted Duncan as he left.
That son of a bitch.
The way he spoke about Courtney made him sick. Gosh he knew something was up with that kid. The way he acted just seemed so fake and callous. Ethan was only interested in Courtney because he wanted to screw her. Duncan's jaw clenched.
I swear that kid is dead tomorrow
Duncan got up grabbed his stuff, left the class, and sped walked to his car in the teacher's parking lot. He needed to leave that room and gather his thoughts. As he drove away from the campus his thoughts on the Ethan situation made him grip the wheel.
Who the hell does that guy think he is?
Courtney didn't deserve to be subjected to some fuck boy only interested in getting in her pants. The thought of Ethan even touching Courtney had Duncan fuming. His slimy hands shouldn't be anywhere near her. He needed to think of what to do and how to ensure Ethan was far away from Courtney. He could start by moving their seats. But it might make Courtney think that Duncan still doesn't trust her to behave in class. And after the conversation they just had, losing her trust isn't an option.
And something about just straight up telling her 'Hey the guy you like only likes you because he wants to have sex with you.' would make her feel terrible, it's definitely not something she would want to be hearing from an adult let alone Duncan.
Duncan's mind wandered to another possible outcome, one that he hoped would never be true and that is what if Courtney wants this? He had to think back to his own high school days. He wasn't innocent that's for sure he had his own fair share of flings and hook ups. Those types of things aren't rare for high school…so what if Courtney was willing to be with Ethan for well...sex? It's not far off from things he did when he was their age.
No.
Courtney, wouldn't. She would probably think causal sex meet ups was unruly and vile. Duncan smiled to himself. Heh he could see her ranting about how gross it is and how romance is dead or something. Bottom line is, Courtney would be disappointed by Ethan and the way he objectified her.
Duncan pulled into his driveway and decided one final thing as to not drag out his anger into the rest of his afternoon. As the adult in this situation, Duncan would do what he can to prevent her from being taken advantage of.
A/N: I have some idea of how I want to continue the next chapter however I would love to hear your suggestions and maybe some stuff you guys would like to see in the next chapters to come.
