Pierre had returned to France sometime after Peppermint Patty's biological mother died, and soon, she hooked up with Roy, one of her friends at school, now 22 as well. A few months ago, Roy had ask Peppermint Patty for her hand in marriage. They hadn't decided on a date for their wedding, but promised to announce it when the time came.
As Peppermint Patty had returned from work, there stood her soon-to-be husband Roy.
"Heya, Roy!" said Peppermint Patty.
"Hey, Tricia!" said Roy. "How was work?"
"Pretty fun." said Peppermint Patty.
"Things at my work were good," said Roy. "But things elsewhere in Sparkyville….. grim."
"What do you mean grim?" asked Peppermint Patty.
"An old acquaintance passed away." said Roy. "Do you remember Emerald Green?"
"That fat fussbudget?" Peppermint Patty said, gritting her teeth slightly.
"The very same." said Roy. "She drowned herself."
"Good grief!" cried Peppermint Patty. "How did you find out?"
"Charlie Brown told me." said Roy. "Heard she was desponded over her situation."
"Hope we know when the funeral is." said Peppermint Patty. "Get some insight."
Peppermint Patty got out her phone and made a call to her best friend. At home, Marcie, now 21-nearly-22, who had gotten home from her job at the library, was preparing her dinner for herself and her boyfriend Franklin when the telephone rang.
"You do the dinner, Franklin." said Marcie. "I'll answer it."
Marcie picked up the phone.
"Hello?"
"Heya, Marcie." said Peppermint Patty.
"Sir! What a nice surprise." said Marcie.
"Something shocking happened." said Peppermint Patty.
"I'm all ears, Sir."
"Emerald killed herself!"
"Good grief!" cried Marcie. "How?!"
"Emerald drowned herself." Peppermint Patty explained.
"Oh my goodness!"
"Even though we had bad blood, I'm still going to Emerald's funeral." said Peppermint Patty.
"Okay. Let me know when the funeral is, Sir." said Marcie.
"What was that about?" asked Franklin.
"Emerald died." said Marcie. "Drowned herself."
"Good grief!" cried Franklin. "Emerald may not have been the best girl in the world, but even she didn't deserve to die this soon."
"I know." said Marcie. "Anyway, let's get back to preparing dinner."
