Chapter 12: Emerald's Former Best Friend
Redfern, Sydney, NSW, 11:50
Ever since Tommy tore into Emerald after she made remarks about Charlie Brown that she'd give Lucy, Patty Swanson, and even Violet a run for their money, Scarlet Harper decided she could no longer be friends with Emerald, and later turned her attention to Lucy, Violet and Patty Swanson and hung out with them more. After Emerald's expulsion, Scarlet moved back to Australia, and went to live in Redfern, a suburb in Sydney.
Now 23, Scarlet was a chiropractor. She had no boyfriend at that moment, but she wanted to take things steady when finding one. She'd just gotten done with massaging one of her patients when she got a call on her mobile phone.
"Hello, Harper Chiropractors." said Scarlet. "What may I do for you?"
"Hello, Scarlet. It's Erin." said a now 21-year-old Erin Dale, who was also in Sydney.
"Oh. Hi Erin." said Scarlet. "I'd just gotten done massaging Mr. Williamson."
"Okay, so I didn't call at a bad time."
"What is it about?" asked Scarlet.
"Your former best friend is dead." Erin said.
"My former best friend?!" Scarlet exclaimed. "Emerald?"
"The very same." said Erin. "Tommy called me to tell me Emerald drowned herself."
"GOOD GRIEF!" shouted Scarlet.
"I know." said Erin. "I'm going over to America once I'm told when the funeral is."
"I'd best book a flight back to America too." said Scarlet. "Once I'm okay with the date. Hope to see you at the airport."
"See you there." said Erin.
"Why would Emerald kill herself?" Scarlet asked herself.
"What's wrong, Scarlet?" asked Maya, Scarlet's mother.
"Mum. My former best friend died." Scarlet answered.
"Emerald? How did she die?"
"Suicide."
"OH MY GOODNESS!" cried Maya.
"Once either Tommy, Spearmint Sammy, Marty or Erin tells me when the funeral is, I'll let you know." Scarlet said.
"Okay, dear." said Maya.
