Ok, so, I have a new poll up on my fanfiction profile. It pertains to one of the best anti-heroes, Jason Todd. Should he live, or should he die. His fate is in the hands of the fans once again. Choose wisely.
GSOG Chapter 36
"Ok, so, William is warning you as well that Slade is not to be trusted." Bruce summarized. Dick nods, they're standing in Bruce's Study.
"Him of all people… Maybe I should just tell him thanks but no thanks. I don't know what he's about, but clearly it can't be good." Dick says. He takes the knife out of his pocket, setting it on Bruce's desk. "He even gave me this." Bruce takes the knife, looking at it, it obviously matches the knives that were used before, back in December.
"I agree." Barbara states. "He's not good news, everyone else who's met him so far has agreed. Charles was actively trying to kidnap you and even I didn't feel as scared of him as I do Slade. Don't you fear him at all?"
"I don't exactly feel fear… I feel this burning hatred when I look at him." Dick says. "I can't explain it, but I hate his guts, and my fears are for my family and friends, that, if I don't comply, he'll hurt you. I don't want any of you to be hurt, especially not because of me. I lost one family, I'll burn in hell before I lose another." Barbara places a hand on his shoulder. He smiles a little at her, but then it drops. He looks at his arm. "I also want to see where this goes. You know what they say, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."
"But if they're too close, they can kill you." Barbara says. "We can't lose you either."
"I know…" Dick states softly, but does he? Surely he does… Bruce looks at Dick, he can tell millions of things are speeding behind those stormy blues.
"I will trust that you know what you're doing, but I will pull you out of this if I feel your life could be jeopardized and I do not want to hear complaints, is that clear?" That's the Batman voice…
"Yes sir." Dick responds in kind.
"Good." Bruce turns back to his computer. There's a knock on the door, then Selina steps into the Study.
"Bruce, there's something we need to talk about." She says. She looks at the kids expectantly. Worried this might be some adult drama stuff, the two leave the room, running off to find something to do. "You were right, old calico eyes is planning something. Something big… But we have time to prepare."
"How much time?" Bruce asks.
"Fools Day." She answers. Hearing that, the five year anniversary of… Bruce's brows knit in concern. "But, we should keep our eyes peeled. He might set other things in motion for his big plan." Bruce nods in agreement.
"Can't be too careful when he's involved."
Up in Dick's room, he opens a secret panel and pulls out his little trinket box, opening it up.
"Ah-ha!" He calls, lifting up the sucker. "Still got it. It's actually root beer flavored, now I know why I didn't eat it…" He sticks it back in the box and sets it down.
"What's with the bouncy ball?" Barbara asks, taking out a rainbow checkered ball.
"Oh, that's when I was in a grocery store and I had a few quarters, I was allowed to buy one. I would bounce it a lot, but once I almost lost it, so I kept it here."
"And the golf ball?" She asks. Dick shrugs.
"Just found a golf ball, so I figured, hey, random golf ball." He explains, looking at all the other little treasures he has. He pulls out a small box. "This is a box of tarot cards that someone threw at my mom's head before calling her a gypsy and demanding she tell his fortune. Then my dad and uncle ran after the guy snarling like rabid animals because she said he'd be attacked by wild beasts. She kept the cards because they look cool." He takes them out to show her the designs. "I never learned how to read tarot, but I kept them because they're pretty and mom liked them."
"You have a story about everything in this box, don't you?" Barbara asks.
"Yep!" Dick states. "I'm probably a bit too sentimental sometimes…" He smirks a bit. "You should see the Batcave though, so many trophies!" That gives him an idea and he closes the box, putting it back in place before pushing the dresser back. "Why don't we go to the Batcave? Heck, I could take you to the Cave! You could meet the Team!"
"Are you sure that's safe?" She asks.
"Oh yea, the Team already knows my identity. I want them to meet my first best friend that's well, actually human."
"You first best friend wasn't?"
"Nope! Her name's Zitka, she's an elephant. We basically grew up together." He says. "I need to visit sometime." Her brow raises. "Come on!" He leads her to one of the secret passages to the Batcave. She follows close as they go in and find what she never imagined, but also imagined at the same time.
"Whoa…" She looks around, amazed by everything. "That computer is massive…"
"Of course, all these cool things and your first interest is the computer." Dick comments. "This is why we're friends." He smiles widely. She steps up to it, though knows she can't touch it, Bruce would definitely know.
"I'm having tech envy…" She mutters. "You don't know how much I want to see what's under the hood of this thing…" She looks around the rest of the Batcave.
"Well, play your cards right and maybe you'll be in the hot seat." Dick says, looking up at the machinery. "You should see all the other things Dad and Lucius cook up." She notices him calling Bruce his Dad, but doesn't comment on it, it just makes her smile a little. They're cousins! They may as well be anyway, Bruce is like an uncle to her, always has been for as long as she can remember. She can live with being cousins with Dick. She cares a lot for him, and loves to mess with him.
"What's the giant penny?" She asks.
"Plot from Two-Face. He made a giant coin flip machine and tied Batman to the coin. You can probably guess where that was going." Dick explains. "Wait til you see Kid Flash's souvenir room. Nothing magnificent like this, but there's some funny stories behind some of the things in there. Like a Cobra Cultist hood. He knocked a cultist down, took his mask and shouted souvenir as the guy fell down." He shakes his head. "Doofus…"
"Now I know why you get along so well." She teases.
"Hey!" He playfully snaps, then giggles. "You're not wrong…" He steps back from the computer, heading down some steps.
"So, how often do you spend time in the Batcave?" She asks.
"Mostly when I'm working as Robin, I'm normally not in here without Batman, but sometimes I'll come in here for some peace and quiet during parties."
"So that's where you disappear to."
"Yea…"
"And, what's with the dinosaur?"
"It eats intruders." He says so non-chalantly, smiling widely.
"You're messing with me right?" She asks. His smile widens so much that his eyes close. She shakes her head. "Dork." There's a dinging sound on his phone, it echoes in the cave, making it sound so much louder. He takes it out and looks at it.
"I gotta change the ringtones on this thing." He opens the message. "Sweet! Everyone's on board with meeting you. We can go to the Cave whenever."
"We can go now. But seriously, what's with the dinosaur?" She asks again.
"It was another souvenir from Bat's early days." He explains, and leads her to the Zeta Tube. "Ok, so, I'll go in, I want you to stand there, I'll beam you in." He steps in. "See ya in a minute."
"Recognized. Robin, B-0-1." There's a bright flash of yellow and Dick appears at the Cave with the same robotic voice announcing him. Majority of the team is there, minus Artemis and Zatanna, but they arrive shortly. "Recognized, Artemis, B-0-7. Zatanna Zatara, B-0-8." Dick is typing on a computer and soon the Zeta Tube glows. "Access Granted, Barbara, A-0-6. Authorization, Robin."
"Team, meet Barbara. Barbara, meet the Team." Dick says, gesturing between them.
"Artemis and Zatanna?" Barbara asks, seeing them. "You're part of the Team too?"
"Yep. We really first met here." Zatanna says. She and Artemis take each other's hands.
"Ok." She doesn't know how to respond. She looks at the others. Of course Wally is part of the team, that makes sense.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Barbara!" M'gann says. "You can call me Megan. I'm a Martian!"
"Huh, so, like Martian Manhunter?"
"Exactly. He's my uncle. And this is Conner Kent."
"Like Clark Kent." She mentions.
"Yep." Dick confirms. "He's Superman's clone, well… Half clone, the other half is Lex Luthor."
"That's giving me some weird vibes… Does Luthor like like Superman, orrr…" She trails off. "I mean, it's not an issue, but uh, they're complete opposites and enemies, so…"
"I think it'd be romantic." Dick smirks.
"Hell no!" Conner rejects, which makes Dick giggle.
"We then have Rocket, Aqualad, and lastly Kid Flash. Red Arrow was one of ours at one point, for a short time, but a lot's happened with that." Dick points to everyone else. "Rocket is our newest member, joined up on the eve of new years eve."
"Hi, Barbara." Rocket waves. "You can call me Raquel."
"And you may call me Kaldur'ahm, or simply Kaldur. Welcome to the Cave." Kaldur greets. Barbara smiles at him.
"You sound so calm and quiet compared to everyone else, imagine being stuck with loud mouth as a classmate." Barbara gestures to Dick, of course. "Class clown over here."
"I'm like the Joker, I like to make people laugh, but at least it doesn't give them permanent smiles… That hurts your cheeks…" Dick comments, rubbing his cheeks, shivers in discomfort. Wally wraps an arm around his back.
"I can make your cheeks hurt without Joker Venom." Wally teases, smirking, inches from his face.
"Gonna try passing through a wall again?" Dick teases back, smirking back. Wally playfully pouts, bowing his head, making Dick smile wider. He wraps and arm up so his hand rests on his shoulder. "Hey, you know, we should play something, help Babs to bond with you guys. If she wants to." He looks at Barbara. She shrugs.
"Sure, why not." She agrees.
"Ooh! Ooh! How about Truth or Dare!" Wally asks excitedly.
"Well, that's a cliché…" Artemis comments.
"Hmmmm… How about Werewolf?" Dick asks. "We need a deck of cards."
"Oh! I'll go get them!" Wally speeds off and comes back with them. Dick takes them and starts looking through them. "Ok, so since there's nine of us, there will be two werewolves, I'll be the narrator for the first game, we can take turns. I have selected the cards needed for this game. Ace will be the werewolf, King will be the hunter, queen will be the medic, any other card will be a villager. You each get a card, and you all sit in a circle while I'm telling the story. When I say sleep, you close your eyes, then I call each role and that person opens their eyes, no one else peeks, it's just that person. Werewolves kill, hunter is trying to find the werewolf and if they select a werewolf, that werewolf is out, and medic saves someone who may or may not have been killed by a werewolf. Since there will be two, you both will have to agree on one victim each night. Because this is supposed to be a fun game, no power use, if you use powers, you will be disqualified. Sound fair?"
Everyone is in agreement and they all make a circle around the middle of the Mission Room. Dick goes around, handing everyone a card and stands in the center of it. They're all spaced in a way that no one will feel another move. Wolf is kind of watching from the back, curious. The circle goes Wally, Zatanna, Artemis, Barbara, Conner, M'gann, Kaldur, and Raquel.
"Ok, time to start. There's a lovely little village in Happy Harbor, but what the villagers don't know is that the village harbors a deadly secret." Dick starts, looking to everyone as he tells the story.
"Dude, that's lame." Wally teases him about the pun.
"Yep!" Dick agrees. "In the dead of night, when everyone is asleep," everyone closes their eyes and bows their heads, "the werewolves awaken, ready to make their kill." Kaldur and Raquel lift their heads, both smile at each other in amusement. Raquel glances at Wally, who has fallen back onto the floor to 'sleep.' Kaldur thinks a moment then nods, they both point at Wally. "After the kill is made, the werewolves sneak out and return to their cabins to sleep the rest of the night." Kaldur and Raquel lower their heads, eyes closed. "Now, the medic smells blood in the air, and it is up to them to save that person." M'gann lifts her head. She tries to decide which of her friends she wants to save… How can she choose to save just one of them?! She knits her brows and points at Raquel. "The medic, satisfied with their work, returns back to their cabin and goes back to sleep." M'gann lowers her head again, smiling, wanting to bounce where she's sitting. "And now, the hunter is out, knowing a fell beast or two is roaming their village." Artemis lifts her head and glances around the circle, who does she think is the werewolf… She points at Wally. Dick tries his best not to laugh, thankfully he was trained by the Bat. "Believing they've caught the beast, the hunter returns home and sleeps the rest of the night, believing they just saved the whole village. Come morning, everyone wakes," everyone lifts their heads, "except for one individual. Wally is still dead asleep, or, just dead. Yea, he's dead."
"Aww, man!" Wally protests.
"Oddly enough, the corpse has rope tied around his wrists, a late night rendezvous gone awry?" Dick states with a smirk, making Wally blush madly. "And Raquel wakes to finding bandages around her arms thanks to the medic. The village knows something suspicious has gone down and suspects there could be a werewolf or two among them. Everyone votes on who they think it is."
"Well the person I thought it was is dead, so it's not him. I got no clue." Artemis says.
"Did you kill him?" Raquel asks.
"I do not kill people, that is my least favorite thing to do." Artemis references. Dick and Wally give her a thumbs up, Barbara giggles a little.
"Caaaaarlllllll." Barbara continues. The rest seem confused. Zatanna looks at Artemis.
"I'll show you later." She says. "It's hilarious."
"It's not a meat grinder, it's an orphan stomper." Dick quotes.
"Oh gosh!" M'gann remarks.
"I can make orphan jokes, I'm an orphan." Dick states, rather nonchalantly. "Anyway, who thinks Kaldur is a werewolf?" No one raises their hand. "Ok, Conner?" Raquel raises her hand. "Megan?" No one raises their hand. "Raquel." Kaldur raises his hand.
"Wha-" She stops, lightly smacking his arm down.
"No hard feeling, my dear." Kaldur states, smiling softly.
"Ok, Zatanna?" No one raises their hand when Dick asks. "Artemis?" Conner, Zatanna, and Barbara raise their hands. "Aaand Barbara." No one raises their hand. "Wellp, sorry, sis. The villagers have spoken and Artemis is brought to the chopping block, at least the axe is sharp. What role were you?"
"I was the fricken hunter, you guys." Artemis states, standing up and standing to the side with Wally since he too is dead.
"We fricked up…" Barbara comments.
"Yep…" Conner agrees.
"What were you, Wally?" Megan asks.
"A harmless civilian and apparently Artemis thought I was guilty!" Wally remarks.
"You were covered in blood, how was I to know?" Artemis states.
"I dunno, check for a pulse maybe?!" Wally argues playfully.
"Anyway, believing the village was safe, that night, everyone goes to sleep, sleeping so soundly and happily. Then, the werewolves wake to strike again." Dick narrates. Kaldur and Raquel lift their heads. Artemis's jaw drops with a smile on the corners. Wally speeds around in excitement, trying not to laugh, but everyone can feel the air as he passes by. "Who will be their victim this time?" Kaldur looks about, trying to decide. Kaldur nods at Zatanna and looks at Raquel who nods in agreement, both pointing at Zatanna. "And once they've crept into the home of another unsuspecting villager and tear them apart, ripping the heart from their chest! They retreat to their cabins, satisfied with their meal, sleeping happily." Raquel and Kaldur bow their heads again. "The medic, having an almost sixth sense, feels like another person has possibly perished. Who do they save?" M'gann lifts her head and looks around, she looks right at Barbara and points to her. "After the villager is all bandaged up, the medic returns home and sleeps comfortably, believing they saved a life. And without the hunter, nothing can be done about the werewolves. The villagers all wake." Everyone lifts their heads. "Unfortunately, Zatanna joins her hunter girlfriend in the afterlife, torn asunder by the very thing she was trying to protect everyone from. Strangely enough though, Barbara wakes bandaged head to toe. The medic struck again, possibly worse than the werewolves at this point." Barbara raises an eyebrow, tilting her head in confusion. M'gann tries not to react, not wanting to be outed as the medic, but Kaldur notices her straighten up a bit and seemingly try to relax. "Now, who thinks Kaldur is a werewolf?" Raquel lifts her head.
"Because you voted for me last time!" She playfully snarks.
"Fair enough." Kaldur says, smiling at her.
"Ok, who thinks it's Conner?" Dick asks. Barbara and Kaldur raise their hands.
"Come on…" He mutters.
"Who thinks it's Megan?" Dick asks once more. No one raises their hand. "And Raquel?" No one raises their hand. "Barbara." No one raises their hand. "Alright SB, looks like you're out." Conner sighs and stands. "What were you?"
"A civilian." He says. He steps off to Wolf and pets him to calm down, a little annoyed.
"So was I, unfortunately." Zatanna says.
"Wellp, that's definitely unfortunate. Because with so many out, there's no way for the villagers to win. Would the werewolves stand up?" Dick asks. Kaldur and Raquel both stand.
"I knew it!" Wally blurts out.
"Well, you were the first one dead, so yea." Raquel teases, smirking.
"Real Bonnie and Clyde over here." Dick states, smiling. "So, how was it?"
"It was definitely interesting." Artemis says.
"I loved it! Even though I died first…" Wally says. "We should play again!"
"Well, everyone give the cards back, who wants to be the narrator this time?" Dick asks.
"I will." Barbara offers. Everyone stands and hands back the cards. Dick takes them, shuffles them, and hands them to Barbara. Another game is underway…
In case you're not a top note reader, if you're not a top, that's fine! Being a bottom is totally valid. There is a vote for Jason Todd's life now, it's on my fanfiction profile. It's up to you guys whether he lives or dies. Meanwhile, Imma post a bonus chapter, it's another round of Werewolf if you wanna read it.
