Chapter 25
"So, the doctor thinks that Lynn has some sort of learning disability but he worries that there's more to it. At times she seems eager to please someone and then almost completely shuts down. Still, he managed to get her to pull back her sleeves and he said that there are healing scratches on her arms," Charlie told Sarah. He'd missed her family again and he wondered if Sarah's father, Daniel, was doing it on purpose to give his daughter some time with him.
"Explains the itching then. What about her flashes of seemingly emotionless behavior?" Sarah asked. She'd scooted over in the hospital bed so that Charlie could be next to her with Rex at her feet.
"He said he'd need more than a quick session to get to the bottom of that and the possible Pica. Joe agreed to have her transferred to the secure wing of the mental health facility. Same place they have Danny. The good news is Doctor Kley is going to let me know how Danny is doing. We really need to talk to him," the detective said.
"Without his side of the story, we don't have all the pieces," Sarah frowned.
"Agreed but tomorrow we're going to see if Robert Blanchard can get Richard Moffat to spill some or all of the beans, as it were," Charlie let her know.
"He has to be behind all of this. No way Lynn pulls it off. We still don't know why Tim Watkins had to die," Sarah said,
"I'm beginning to have an idea about that," he admitted. There was a knock on the door and Sarah bade the person to enter.
"Oh, for heaven's sake," the night nurse heaved a sigh at the sight of them. This was the nurse from a few days ago and her rotation must have been back up in the unit.
"Sorry," Charlie looked sheepish. Rex put a paw over his nose as well.
"She's going home in a few days. Couldn't wait huh?" The nurse wanted to know.
"Nope," he admitted as he climbed out of the bed. Rex hopped down onto the floor and went under the bed.
"All right well let me check everything over and then you can be as you were," she said. Charlie was surprised.
"You were going to do it anyway," the nurse chuckled as she checked Sarah's bandages and drainage.
"Not wrong," the detective chuckled.
"Just be careful. Don't want to ruin her going home," the nurse winked and then left the room. Rex wasted no time in hopping back up on the bed and Sarah gave his ears a scratch as Charlie got back into his position next to her.
"So, thoughts about why Tim Watkins had to die?" The Head of Forensics wanted to know.
"Mrs. Debra Moffat was supposedly reported missing by her family to the OPP, who gave the RCMP the report," he explained.
"Not by her family here?" Sarah raised an eyebrow.
"Nope. Debra has been missing since her kids were little," Charlie told her.
"Because that's not suspicious," she said.
"Exactly. RCMP is digging for the file. It wasn't on the computer system so it was off to the dusty paper files," he explained.
"Why would a missing persons file not be on the system?" Sarah was unsure of how that would work.
"Possibly because the original investigators suspected foul play or that there was no hard evidence of an abduction or could be the RCMP didn't take it seriously. I don't like the implications either way, especially since Debra seems to have just fallen off the face of the Earth," he heaved a sigh. Sarah nodded. Charlie pulled her a little closer and kissed her temple.
"You don't know how excited I am that you're getting out of here soon," he said.
"I miss our bed and my privacy," Sarah told him.
"I bet on both accounts. What did your folks say about staying?" Charlie asked.
"Ubon is leaving tomorrow. She has to get her dog and she has to get back to work. Mom and Dad have no such reason to run back to Toronto. Being retired will do that to you," she chuckled.
"Those days are little ways off for us, I'm afraid," Charlie shook his head.
"Indeed, but I think the real reason is that no one wants to confront my mom," Sarah gave him a look.
"And get killed? I like my body parts where they are, thanks," he teased her.
"I know. She can be a bit overbearing but she means well," she said.
"Of course she does. She loves you like I love you and doesn't want her baby girl to get hurt," Charlie kissed her temple again.
"Kiss me for real," Sarah told him. Charlie was more than happy to oblige. Slow and sweet and interrupted by his phone ringing. He cursed under his breath and answered it after separating from Sarah.
"Hudson." His girlfriend watched his facial expressions and could tell that he was getting good news.
"Ok great. See you then," he hung up.
"Who was that?" Sarah asked.
"That was Inspector Anna Siku of the RCMP. She has the file on Debra Moffat and she's coming to the precinct tomorrow," Charlie said.
"Good. Maybe she has some insight. Now where were we?" Sarah smirked.
