I thought it was going to be just another Friday, maybe even a boring weekend. Turns out, as always, I was wrong. But I'm getting ahead of myself, let's get back to where it all began. It was a typical June Friday. Which meant, since I lived in the state of California, it was hot. One positive thing was that it was the last day of school, so I at least had a free summer ahead of me. Now, I'm sure you think my life was boring. Well, I can say that wasn't true. That was entirely due to my fairy godparents Cosmo, Wanda, and their son Poof. I also had a dog named Sparky, who just disappeared one day. There was also a time when I had to share my fairies with my ex-neighbor Chloe, until the day she finally got her own fairies. Sure, it was a year late, but I was excited to have my fairies all to myself again. What were we talking about? Oh yeah, hot June day, I remember now.
I was sitting next to my friends on the bus, when I started thinking about how exciting things were going to be. Outside of it being the last day of school, it was also the night of the championship game. The game had been delayed so much, I thought we'd never get to play it. Plus, my friends and I were going to go to our favorite hangout after school, Shirley's Pizzeria. As I sat and thought about the events that were going to happen, my friend Chester said "So, how do you think you did?"
"Did on what?" I said.
"On the History final. Honestly dude, you're like a human goldfish." he said.
"And you're just noticing this? As for the final, I think I did well." I responded.
"We're talking about Crocker's class. He'd fail you for having your shoes untied." he said.
"We had a substitute this week, I think I'll be fine." I said.
"So, you guys excited for the game?" AJ said.
"You bet I am. The other team doesn't know who they're up against." I said. Playing for the Dimmsdale Dodos was not something I would have thought of doing in elementary school. The only reason I even joined was so I wouldn't be easily picked on. And it worked, football was my calling. For the most part, people stopped picking on me. Francis would try something, but it never really went his way. Okay, when the bus finally arrived at the school, I quickly dropped my gear off in my gym locker. I then ran to my first class, History, and barely made it. When I entered the room, I saw that the teacher's chair was empty. I figured the teacher was just running late.
That was, until I heard "Nice of you to join us Mr. Turner." I turned and saw Mr. Crocker standing behind me, holding a small stack of paper.
"Nice to be here. I think I'll sit down now." I said before sitting in my usual seat. Once I took my seat, Crocker moved next to his desk.
He said "Good morning class, first thing's first, your finals have been graded. I'll be handing them out now." He proceeded to give everyone their tests. When he handed me my test, I saw that I got an F. I couldn't believe it, all the studying I did seemed pointless. As I looked up, Crocker walked towards the door and said "I'll be right back. While I'm gone, pull out your books and turn to page 164." As soon as he left, AJ and I swapped tests. I saw his grade, A, and sighed. But when I looked at the first question, I noticed that we had the same answer. In fact, after looking through the whole test, I saw we had the same answers for every question.
To be sure of my theory, I said "Hey AJ, can I have my test back?"
"Yeah, sure." he said. He handed me my test, and I confirmed that we had the same answers.
Seeing this, I said "That's funny, how come we have different grades when we have the same answers?"
"Let me see?" he said. He took the tests and compared them. He then said "My god, you're right." We could hear Crocker coming down the hall, so AJ handed me my test, and we pulled out our books.
Crocker came in and said "Okay, are there any questions about the final?" So, I raised my hand.
When he picked me, I said "Why did I get an F?"
"Because you got all the answers wrong Turner." he said.
"Does this mean I got all the answers wrong too?" AJ said.
"No AJ, you got them all right." Crocker said.
"But Timmy and I have the same answers." AJ said.
"What?" Crocker said.
"Here, look." AJ said. He handed Crocker the tests. When Crocker compared them, he looked shocked.
He then said "This is impossible! How could Timmy Turner pass? It doesn't make sense." He looked at me and said "I've got it, you used your... FAIRY GODPARENTS!"
"But he was in the library all last week, studying." Chester said.
"No, it can't be true. Timmy Turner barely knows the alphabet." Crocker said.
"You know I can burp the alphabet, right?" I said.
"Who cares! I don't. I'm done. No more. Class dismissed!" he said before walking out the door and slamming it shut. There was a strange silence in the room as we sat there and wondered what had just happened. Sure, Crocker had outbursts in the past, but not like that. Principal Waxelplax had to fill in for him, and she quickly corrected my grade. It was business as usual after that. It was eventually lunch time at Dimmsdale High. Basically, this was an invitation to lunch in the jungle. We were served chicken tacos with cheese, a side of "spicy" rice, and a carton of milk. After I finished my lunch, I decided to go talk to Trixie Tang, the girl of my dreams, who happened to be the most popular person in school. But my attempt failed because two big guards picked me up and tossed me away. Luckily, I didn't hit anything along the way, besides the floor. Football was great for me, but it didn't get me everything.
Once I landed on the ground, I heard a voice say "Hey Timmy." I looked up to see who it was, and it was Tootie. She used to follow me around like a puppy when we were in elementary school. But when we got to middle school, she stopped following me around as much. But somehow, we became closer friends.
So, after I saw it was her, I said "Um, hey Tootie." as I stood up.
"Let me guess, you tried to talk to Trixie?" she said.
"Come on, am I really that predictable?" I said.
"Yes, you are." Chester said.
"Timmy, are you ever going to stop trying to talk to her?" AJ said
"Yeah, somewhere between never and unlikely." I said.
"Timmy, it might be time." she said. Before I could even respond, I was violently turned around and pushed against a wall. The person that did this was Francis, Dimmsdale High's biggest jerk. Despite not being the biggest kid in school, a lot of kids still feared him. I, however, did not.
So, I said "Hey Francis, you're looking nice. I see you've been working on your tan?"
"Enough games Turner, lunch money, now." he said.
"Sorry big guy, I bought lunch with it. If you really want it, talk to the lady running the register. She'll probably hit you with a ladle, but it's worth the effort." I said.
"Listen, if you don't give me the money, you'll be dead." he said.
So, I said "Oh, a threat. I'm so scared, I can't even remember what we were talking about."
"Quit it." he said, as he pushed me.
"Oh, I'll quit. That is, if you leave me alone. Or did you forget about homecoming?" I said.
"That's it!" he said. Before he could even punch, I slipped out of his grasp. I then tried to run out of the lunchroom. That was, until he threw a carton of milk at me that hit me on the back of the head, causing me to fall to the floor. He walked over to me and planted his foot on my chest. Just as he was about to hit me again, I grabbed a tray on a nearby seat and threw it at his face. Once he was off me, I stood up and grabbed my wallet. I figured the only way I was going to get out of this fight was to give him what he wanted. But before I could hand him the money, Principal Waxelplax stopped me.
She then said "You two, my office!" We did as she said and followed her to her office. After we all sat down, she said "Can either one of you tell me why you were fighting each other?"
Before I had a chance to speak, Francis said "It was horrible. There I was, minding my own business, when he turned me around and started calling me names…" He then continued to tell a rambling, incoherent sob story with the fakest crying I had ever heard. It was so sloppy and boring; I honestly couldn't focus. So much so, that I didn't hear Waxelplax talk to me.
I heard her the second time, when she said "Mr. Turner!"
"Yes?" I said.
She said "What do you have to say for yourself?" I couldn't believe it; she was siding with him.
I wasn't going to let that stand, so I said "Everything he just said is a lie."
"Oh really, and why is that?" she said.
I explained "Because he pinned me up against a wall and asked for my lunch money. I was barely able to get out of his grasp, and I tried running away. But he threw a milk carton at me, which caused me to fall. He put his foot on my chest, and he was going to try to hit me. The only reason I hit him was to defend myself. If you don't believe me, ask anyone in that lunchroom. They'll tell you what happened."
"All right." she said. She then said through her microphone "Chloe Carmichael, please report to the principal's office." Moments later, Chloe walked in. Yep, Chloe still lived in Dimmsdale, she just lived in a different neighborhood.
"Am I in trouble?" she said.
"No Miss Carmichael, I just need an eyewitness account of what happened in the lunchroom." Waxelplax said.
"Francis tried to take Timmy's lunch money and beat him. Timmy only hit Francis in self-defense." Chloe said.
"I see." Waxelplax said. She turned to me and said "Mr. Turner, you're free to go." Chloe and I left the principal's office.
As we walked back to the cafeteria, I said "Thanks for sticking up for me Chloe."
"You're welcome. So, how are your dogs?" she said with a wink.
"They're great." I said. We arrived at the cafeteria and went our separate ways. Moments later, I headed to my next class. Finally, once school was over, my friends and I went to Shirley's Pizzeria. They had recently added an arcade, so we were going to have loads of fun. Since the game was at night, we had a lot of time to kill. As soon as we walked in, we ordered their largest cheese pizza and a cola for everyone.
As we were eating, AJ said "So what happened in Waxelplax's office earlier?"
"Did you get expelled?" Chester said.
"No, Chloe was called in as an eyewitness, and she told Waxelplax what happened." I said.
"That's a relief. So, how is Chloe?" Tootie said.
"She seems fine. We didn't talk much." I said.
"Oh okay." she said.
"Hey, I just realized something. Aren't your parents going to wonder why you aren't home?" AJ said.
"AJ, my parents are in Paris for a week. Besides, I told them I was going here after school." I said.
"Hey, sorry they won't be at the game." AJ said.
"It's okay. I at least get the house to myself for a week." I said.
Tootie then interrupted the flow of our conversation to say "Oh my god, is that Remy Buxaplenty?"
"What?" I said, as I turned around. I then saw him, Remy Buxaplenty, or as I would call him, my snobby nightmare. Oddly enough, we were mostly different people, but shared one similarity. We both had parents that were also never home. Granted, my parents were middle class, and his parents were the richest of the one percent. Anyway, I wasn't in the mood to talk to him. But if he saw me, he would try to talk to me. If it was casual conversation, that wouldn't have been so bad. But knowing Remy, he probably wanted to make some deal involving a fairy swap or something. For the past four years, he had been obsessed with getting my fairies. If you can believe it, he was worse than Crocker. So, I lowered myself into the booth and tried to come up with a plan. That's when I remembered that I had done the school's production of "Grease" as Danny. I got to keep my wig from the show. So, I threw my hat off and put the wig on. While the wig helped, I still looked like myself. That's when I noticed AJ's jacket, which was a red leather jacket. So, I looked at AJ and said "Can I borrow your jacket?"
"What, why?" he said.
"Just trust me, okay." I said. He could tell I was serious, so he gave me the jacket. The only thing I needed was something to cover my eyes, which I needed fast, since Remy saw me. So, I grabbed Chester's sunglasses and put them on.
"Dude, what was that for?" Chester said.
Remy approached the table and said "Timmy Turner, it's good to see you again." The disguise clearly failed, so I needed to get him away somehow. That's when I got a look in the mirror behind the counter. I noticed that I kinda looked like my formally imaginary friend Gary.
So, I said "I'm sorry, but that's not me." in my best Gary impression.
"Then why do you have buck teeth?" he said.
"Because I was born with them. Tell me something blondie, why does everybody confuse me with old Tim Tim? He's a good friend, but he's not as cool as me." I said.
"Because you look like him." he said.
"Funny, I thought I looked like Chip Skylark." I said. The look on Remy's face told me that the disguise was now working.
He then asked me "Alright, what's your name?"
"The name's Gary. What's yours?" I said.
"Remy Buxaplenty. If you happen to find your poor little friend, call me at this number." he said as he handed me a business card. It was there that I decided to have a bit of fun with him. Ever since we met, he made fun of me for one reason or another. I had it with his crap, so it was time for a little payback.
I pretended to read the card, before saying "Wait a minute, I know you."
"You do?" he said.
"Yeah, you're that snob from that country club he told me about. Man, you make me sick." I said.
"What?" he said.
"I heard what you did when his family went to that club. You only invited them so you could make fun of them because they 'didn't have enough money.' How do you sleep at night?" I said.
"They had acquired some money, but it wasn't enough to be rich. They wanted to join, but they really didn't belong at that club, so we taught them a lesson." he said.
"Oh really, and what gave you the authority to do that? You know, it's people like you that give the rich a bad name. You think that just because you have money, you can look down on the middle class. Trust me, if you didn't have mommy and daddy's money, you'd be nothing." I said.
"How dare you talk to me like that?" he said.
"I think I got it. You hate Tim Tim because despite being lower class, he has something you desperately want. He has something money can't buy, and you're jealous." I said.
"And that is?" he said.
"Love." I said.
"I'll have you know that I have a girlfriend." he said.
"No, not that kind of love. I mean he has friends that respect him. Now I know how you feel, my parents ignore me too. But it doesn't mean I can go around making fun of people because of their money." I said. I think that was Remy's breaking point. He slapped me across the face. It may have been a weak slap, but it was enough to tell me I went too far.
"I hope you rot!" he said before leaving the table.
I turned to him and said "Bye blondie." as he left the building. As soon as he was gone, I took off the wig and said "God, that was awful. I think I went too far." in my normal voice.
"Maybe, but it's not like he didn't deserve it." Chester said.
As I put my hat back on, Tootie said "Hey Timmy, how were you able to change your voice?"
"I'm not sure, it's just something I can do." I said as I handed Chester his sunglasses.
"Where did you get the wig?" AJ said, as I handed him his jacket.
"It was from the school's performance of 'Grease.' I wore it." I said.
"Wait, you were in 'Grease?'" Chester said.
"Yeah, I was Danny." I said.
"I had no idea you were into theater." AJ said.
"I know, I learned how to sing for the show." I said.
"Really, you sing?" AJ said.
"Not often, but yes." I said.
"Alright, sing us something?" Tootie said.
"Not now, I just had pizza." I said.
"Alright." AJ said.
"Say, is there a reason we always get cheese pizza? Why no toppings?" she said.
"While I like a lot of vegetables, I still don't like them on pizza. Also, AJ's a vegetarian." I said.
"Actually, I'm not. I used to be, but I realized the best way to get into football shape is protein. So, I started eating meat, and I haven't looked back since." AJ said.
"You're telling me that all this time we could've had pepperoni pizza, but we didn't." Chester said.
"You know, you could've asked." AJ said.
"He's got you there." I said. We then hung out at the arcade for the next couple of hours, not knowing what was to come.
What is the worst day of my life? There are so many candidates in that race. One Friday in June was particularly horrible. It all started when I handed out the results of the History finals. I gave Timmy Turner, one of the students, an F. But as it turned out, he noticed that it was the wrong grade. I couldn't handle this mistake, so I went to my cave to hide away for the rest of the day. In the cave, I made myself a cup of black tea to calm my nerves. Before I could even take a sip, someone was calling me. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and saw that Principal Waxelplax was calling me. As soon as I answered, she said "Denzel, you've really done it this time."
"How so?" I said.
She said "This is, what, the fifth time I've had to regrade one of Timmy Turner's papers? And all of them were from your class. This time was the worst. He had the same answers as AJ, our brightest student. How did you miss that?"
I replied with "I guess I wasn't paying attention."
"Clearly, you have a problem with Timmy Turner. You grade every other student fairly, so why do you still try to fail him? Please tell me it doesn't have anything to do with fairies. I heard you yelled about fairies today." she said.
"No, it didn't. Old habits die hard." I said.
"Well, it better die before the next school year starts. I don't want to correct more of your mistakes." she said. She hung up, and I finally got to drink my tea. I didn't lie to her when I said failing Turner had nothing to do with fairies. No, it was something much more personal.
