Emily Meyers had always been calm and calculated—a perfect fit for the high-stakes world of finance. But today, she wasn't feeling particularly calm. Or calculated. Today, she had a mission: to knock Luke Meyers, her ex-fiancé and current workplace nemesis, completely off his pedestal. And if she could have a little fun doing it? Even better.
It started innocently enough, or at least that's what Emily told herself. She was in the break room at Axis Capital, pouring coffee, when Luke sauntered in. He wore his signature smug grin, the one that made her want to throw her coffee at him. Instead, she forced a polite smile.
"Morning," she said, her tone just neutral enough to pass for professional.
"Morning," Luke replied, grabbing a mug. "Big day today. Heard you're pitching to the board."
Emily didn't flinch. "Yep. Should be interesting."
"Interesting?" Luke chuckled. "That's one way to put it."
Emily raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Oh, nothing," Luke said, smirking. "Just hope you've got something solid. The board can be... unforgiving."
Emily's smile tightened. "Thanks for the pep talk, Luke. I'll keep that in mind."
As he walked away, she gripped her mug so tightly her knuckles turned white. That was it. She was done playing nice.
Later that day, Emily was in her office, brainstorming ways to get under Luke's skin, when her assistant, Kelsey, poked her head in.
"You look... intense," Kelsey said, eyeing the growing stack of papers on Emily's desk.
"I'm fine," Emily replied, though her tone suggested otherwise. "Just thinking."
Kelsey stepped inside, closing the door behind her. "Thinking about what?"
Emily hesitated, then leaned in conspiratorially. "Hypothetically, if someone wanted to... I don't know... make Luke Meyers lose his cool, how would they do it?"
Kelsey's eyes lit up. "Oh, this is going to be fun."
By the end of the day, Emily had a plan. It was equal parts petty and brilliant—just like Luke deserved.
The first step was subtle. She started casually dropping hints in the office that Luke was really into her. At first, it was just a comment here and there, delivered with a perfectly straight face.
"Oh, Luke? Yeah, he's been acting a little... intense lately," she told one coworker. "I think he's having trouble moving on."
"Really?" the coworker asked, intrigued. "I thought he was over it."
Emily shrugged. "You didn't see him staring at me during the last meeting."
Word spread like wildfire. By the next morning, half the office was convinced that Luke was still hopelessly in love with Emily.
The next part of her plan involved a little teamwork. Emily enlisted Kelsey to "accidentally" leave a few anonymous notes on Luke's desk. The notes were vague but pointed, written in loopy handwriting that could belong to anyone in the office.
"You should tell her how you feel."
"Some things are worth fighting for."
"Love doesn't just go away."
Luke found the first note during his lunch break. He stared at it, confused, before crumpling it and tossing it in the trash. By the time he found the third note, he looked visibly rattled.
The turning point came during a team meeting. Emily made a point of sitting directly across from Luke, meeting his gaze with an infuriatingly calm smile every time he looked her way. As the discussion went on, she casually started playing with her pen, twirling it between her fingers.
It was a small thing, but it worked. Luke's eyes flicked to her hand, then back to her face. He shifted in his seat, clearly distracted.
When the meeting ended, he cornered her in the hallway.
"Okay, what's going on?" he demanded.
Emily feigned innocence. "What do you mean?"
"You know what I mean," he said, his tone sharp. "The looks, the... whatever this is." He gestured vaguely, as though trying to encompass her entire existence.
Emily tilted her head, pretending to think. "Oh, you mean the notes?"
Luke froze. "You know about the notes?"
"Maybe," she said, her voice teasing. "Or maybe you just want me to know about them."
Luke looked genuinely flustered for the first time in weeks. "That's not... I mean, I didn't write them."
"Sure you didn't," Emily said, brushing past him. "But if you ever want to talk about your feelings, you know where to find me."
By the end of the week, Luke was unraveling. He couldn't focus in meetings, kept dropping his pen, and at one point, accidentally sent an email to the entire office that simply read, "Hey—wait, ignore this."
Meanwhile, Emily was thriving. She delivered her pitch to the board with flawless confidence, landing a major deal that solidified her position as one of the top players at Axis Capital. She even celebrated with a glass of champagne at her desk, just loud enough for Luke to overhear.
The final blow came during a Friday happy hour at the local bar. The entire office was there, including Luke, who looked like he hadn't slept in days. Emily made a point of sitting near him, casually chatting with Kelsey about her weekend plans.
"Oh, I'm just keeping it low-key," Emily said, loud enough for Luke to hear. "You know, maybe a spa day. A little self-care. Gotta stay radiant, right?"
Kelsey grinned. "Radiant is right. I mean, Luke's practically been staring at you all night."
Emily smirked, turning to Luke. "Is that true?"
Luke opened his mouth, then closed it, his face turning an impressive shade of red. "I wasn't—" He paused, struggling for words. "I mean, maybe I glanced."
"Glanced?" Emily echoed, raising an eyebrow. "Well, don't be shy, Luke. If you've got something to say, now's your chance."
Luke looked like he wanted to sink into the floor. "I don't—this isn't—" He sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "You're impossible."
"And you're predictable," Emily replied, her voice sweet as honey. "But don't worry, Luke. I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually."
As she walked away, leaving him speechless, Kelsey whispered, "That was savage."
Emily raised her glass, smiling. "That's the point."
And for the first time in a long time, Emily Meyers felt like she was the one holding all the cards.
