The scorching Arizona sun beat down on the desert outside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, where tens of thousands of Taylor Swift fans had gathered for The Eras Tour. Among the sea of sequins, cowboy boots, and friendship bracelets were three people who did not look like they were there for a good time: Devi Vishwakumar, Eleanor Wong, and Fabiola Torres.
Devi stood at the entrance, arms crossed, glaring at her two best friends—well, former best friends—who were glaring right back at her.
"I can't believe you two are trying to ruin Taylor Swift for me," Devi snapped, flipping her ponytail for dramatic effect.
"We're ruining it?" Eleanor shot back, her sparkly feather boa practically vibrating with rage. "You're the one who decided to ditch us for Ben Gross's cousin!"
Devi scoffed. "It wasn't a ditch. It was an opportunity to upgrade! Do you know how hard it is to get into VIP?"
"Wow, Devi," Fabiola said, crossing her arms. "Classic you. Always chasing some guy—or in this case, some guy's cousin—and leaving your friends in the dust."
"I did not leave you in the dust!" Devi argued. "I told you exactly where I was going!"
"Oh, right," Eleanor said sarcastically, mimicking Devi's voice. "'BRB, I'm going to the VIP tent. Don't wait up.' How considerate."
Devi threw up her hands. "What was I supposed to do? Stay in the nosebleeds while Ben's cousin offered me free drinks and a prime view of Taylor's surprise songs?"
"Yes!" Eleanor and Fabiola shouted in unison.
By the time they finally made it inside the stadium, tensions were higher than Eleanor's glittery platform heels. They had barely found their seats when Fabiola accidentally stepped on Devi's cowboy hat, which Devi had dropped in the aisle.
"Fabiola!" Devi yelled, grabbing the crumpled hat. "This was part of my 'Fearless' era look!"
"Oh, please," Fabiola said, rolling her eyes. "You don't even like cowboy hats. You just bought it for Instagram."
"Wrong!" Devi snapped. "I bought it for TikTok."
"Okay, can you two not fight right now?" Eleanor interrupted, adjusting her rhinestone jacket. "We're about to witness history. Taylor hasn't performed 'Enchanted' live since—"
"Since when, Eleanor?" Devi interrupted. "Since you stopped talking to me for three weeks over a stupid misunderstanding?"
"Misunderstanding?" Eleanor repeated, her voice rising. "You told everyone at school I cried when I found out Joe Jonas was married!"
"Well, you did cry," Devi pointed out.
"Because it was a beautiful love story!" Eleanor yelled.
"It was mid, at best," Devi muttered under her breath.
As the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted into screams, the opening beats of "Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince" thundered through the stadium. Taylor appeared on stage, radiant and sparkling, and for a brief moment, the three girls stopped fighting and joined in the collective hysteria.
But peace was short-lived.
During "You Belong With Me", Devi decided to record a video for Instagram. She leaned into the aisle, completely blocking Fabiola's view.
"Devi, move!" Fabiola hissed, trying to see around her.
"Hold on," Devi said, angling her phone for the perfect shot. "This is going to get so many likes."
"You're not even watching the show!" Fabiola snapped, yanking on Devi's arm.
Devi whipped around. "Excuse me, I paid for this ticket! I'll record if I want to."
"Paid for this ticket?" Eleanor cut in, her eyes narrowing. "Your mom paid for this ticket, Devi."
"Oh, so now you're coming after my mom?" Devi shot back, standing up straight. "What's next, Eleanor? My grades? My hair?"
Eleanor rolled her eyes. "I don't need to come after your grades, Devi. You've already ruined them yourself by spending every free second chasing Ben Gross."
Devi gasped dramatically. "Take that back!"
"Make me!" Eleanor yelled.
By the time Taylor launched into "All Too Well (10-Minute Version)", the girls were fully engaged in a screaming match, much to the dismay of the surrounding Swifties.
"You're ruining the vibe!" a girl in a 1989 tour shirt yelled from behind them.
"Yeah, take your drama somewhere else!" added another.
But the girls ignored them. Fabiola was now waving her light-up bracelet in Devi's face.
"And another thing!" Fabiola said. "You always act like your drama is the most important thing in the world! Newsflash: some of us have lives outside of your ridiculous love triangles!"
"Oh, so now my life is ridiculous?" Devi shouted. "At least I have one! You're always tinkering with robots and ignoring everything else!"
"Robots don't betray me!" Fabiola shot back.
"Girls, can we focus on the music?" Eleanor tried to intervene, but she was quickly dragged back into the fray.
"And you!" Devi pointed at Eleanor. "Stop acting like you're better than me just because you cried over Joe Jonas. Newsflash: no one cares about your obscure pop culture opinions!"
Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest. "Obscure? Obscure? How dare you!"
The fight escalated to the point where stadium security arrived. A burly guard tapped Devi on the shoulder.
"Ladies, you're causing a disturbance," he said sternly. "If you don't calm down, we'll have to escort you out."
Devi crossed her arms. "We're not leaving. We've been looking forward to this concert for months!"
"Yeah," Eleanor chimed in, "and Taylor wrote 'The Archer' for misunderstood people like us."
"Then act misunderstood somewhere else," the guard deadpanned.
Fabiola groaned. "Okay, fine. We'll stop."
Reluctantly, the girls sat down, but the damage was done. Half the row was glaring at them, and the girl behind them muttered, "If I miss 'The 1' because of them, I'm suing."
By the time Taylor reached her 1989 set, the girls were stewing in awkward silence. Finally, Devi broke it.
"Look," she said, her voice quieter now, "I'm sorry, okay? I shouldn't have ditched you guys for VIP. That was... uncool."
Eleanor sighed. "And I'm sorry I yelled about Joe Jonas. It's just... I get emotional."
Fabiola shrugged. "I guess I could've been less harsh about the robot stuff. They are kind of my whole life."
Devi smiled slightly. "Maybe we're all ridiculous in our own way."
"Yeah," Eleanor agreed. "But at least we're ridiculous together."
As Taylor launched into "Shake It Off", the girls jumped to their feet, singing and dancing like nothing had happened. And as they twirled and laughed, the surrounding Swifties decided to forgive them too, joining in the celebration.
Because if Taylor Swift had taught them anything, it was this: even the most dramatic fights could end with a perfectly choreographed dance party.
And maybe a few friendship bracelets.
