Will POV
Well then, that happened, and my life is going to be completely screwed up forever. Wonderful. Could have been anyone else in the world and I get Nico. Not that there was anything wrong with him, well, other than the fact that he was a boy. Obviously I have to pretend that that never happened and try to pretend things are the same as they were before. I knew that that was going to be near impossible already. One of these times I'm going to let something slip. There's always the option of just telling people that I met my soulmate and just say it's a girl. That will work at my job but never with my family, they will demand I introduce her to them and then what?
Right now, I'm just going to try to pretend like I never accidentally walked into Nico's room.
Well, that worked for one whole day.
Nico's doctor wasn't there the next day and they needed someone to cover his shift. So, I had to do it, and this time Nico wasn't sleeping.
I tried as subtly as I could convince my boss to have someone else do it. But apparently, I was the only one available.
I had my plan all worked out. Nico would be sleeping; I'd just pretend he was a normal patient.
I hesitated outside of the door. What if Nico was awake when I walked in? What then? Finally, I realized I would have to do this no matter what and worrying about wasn't going to make things better, so I just walked in. I was so relieved when I saw him still unconscious on the bed.
I quickly checked on him and did what I had to do and left.
Later when I had to do it again, he was still out like a light.
By the time I was in there for the sixth time, I was completely confident he was not going to wake up and see me.
I was checking on his injuries for the sixth time that day when he made a small movement. I froze, maybe if I left now... it wouldn't matter, if he woke up, I would have to come back at least one more time.
I didn't even get to make a full plan this time before he opened his eyes.
"Where am I?" I heard Nico speak for the first time. He looked so confused.
"You're in the hospital, you were beat up, but no one knows why or by who yet."
"I don't know his name. I'm sorry." Nico hadn't even noticed that anything was different, I was lucky that we were in a room that was almost all white.
"What's wrong with your face?" Nico asked me. What is that supposed to mean? Did he realize something? Do soulmate's faces look weird to the other? I didn't think Nico's face looked strange, he actually looked quite normal compared to the other people he had seen since yesterday. Nico had black hair and equally dark eyes that stood out compared to his pale skin. Other people had yellow and red hair and green and blue eyes and they looked extremely strange.
Then it hit me. I never looked in mirrors if I could help it. I didn't know. What did I look like? Was my hair like Nico's or one of the other people that have colorful hair? What about my eyes? I quickly pulled out my phone and went to selfie mode on the camera. I looked at myself and saw I did have yellow hair and my eyes were bright blue.
Realization seemed to dawn on Nico's face.
"Who are you?" Nico looked absolutely terrified. "How long have I been here and who have been in the room since I've been here?
"Well, you were brought here a couple of days ago. And the only people that have been in the room are your sister and your doctors."
"Doctors, multiple?"
"Just me and one other doctor."
"Other doctor is male or female." Nico asked.
"Why does that matter?" I asked him. I felt bad for making him confused like this, but it was necessary.
"It just does, answer the question."
"He's male."
"Oh." Nico looked disappointed, I bet he was hoping that the reason he could see color was because of a girl. He spoke again, "And you are..."
"Dr. Solace."
Nico wracked his brain trying to find an explanation, I felt too bad for him.
"You're wondering why you can see color," I told, more than asked him.
"Yes, how did you know?"
"Yesterday I couldn't see color either. I took a wrong turn and ended up in this room with you. There was no one else in here, and when I left, I saw color too."
"So, you mean..." Nico began speaking.
"Nico, we're soulmates."
