As the storm turned to light rain in the late hours of the night, Wren sat in her room. She sat before her vanity as six images were reflected at her within the mirror in front of her. All wearing a variation of a white mask over their faces. She, herself, wore a plain white, half mask that fell to her nose and had a bleeding red heart over her left eye. These six individuals were the allies that Law didn't fully trust. The ones he believed put their entire plan at risk. However, to Wren they were some of the few in this world she could fully trust. They were the ones who helped build the organization that would someday take down Donquixote Doflamingo and everything he built. But not just Doflamingo, but their other targets as well. The ones Law was not aware of.
"It seems you were lucky to get away, Monarca-sama," The woman in the top right corner commented. "Though we are grateful to hear you are well."
There were some murmurs of agreement from the other images. However, one masked man scoffed as he laced his gloved figures together.
"Yes, yes, Torre, we're all grateful she managed to get away alive," he said. "However, this change in circumstances has hurt us greatly. We were using the Donquixote Family wealth to help fund most of our work."
That was true. Wren had used most of the wealth she gathered as a Commander in the Donquixote Family to help the organization where her true loyalties lay.
"Stop being such a stick in the mud, Oro," A younger male said as he was leaned back in his chair. "Yeah, it's a setback, but you heard Monarca-sama, it's business as always. If we dread over what we've lost and focus solely on it, we'll fall behind on the more important things. Besides, we should just count our blessings that we still have our leader."
Oro grumbled at the younger male—Caballero—but otherwise remained silent as he rested his chin on his clasped hands.
"Speaking of business," A second female spoke up. "Alabasta…we're still working on that, right?"
"Yes, Obispo, we're still working on that project." Wren replied. "I plan to step in personally now considering the sudden change in my standing."
Her words were met with silence, which is something she suspected as it was rare that Wren step foot into the field. Or at least it became a rarity the last year or so considering how much work she had to concern herself with as Doflamingo's third Corazon.
"Are you sure that is wise, Monarca-sama?" A third male with long, unruly white hair questioned. "It's been sometime since you've taken on a mission in the field, kon kon."
"I'll be fine, Lanza," Wren assured him. "I'm not that rusty. Besides, I believe none of you are close enough to handle the situation before it's too late. Meaning, I'm the only option."
More silence fell over the group as Wren crossed one leg over the other. She patiently waited for a reply as she knew they couldn't argue with her.
"She is right," the last member of the group said. "The rest of us are either tied up with our own projects or too far away to do anything. If the rumors are true, we cannot afford for someone like Crocodile or Doflamingo to get their hands on such a dangerous weapon. Monarca-sama is our only choice."
There were reluctant murmurs of agreement from the others. Not that Wren would have let them talk her out of her decision in the first place. While she did hold their council in high regard, she was still the one in charge.
"However, I believe sending some of our forces to Alabasta would be a smart decision," the last member—Palata—continued. "You can't pillage Crocodile's resources on your own and we could use whatever he has to help replenish what was lost. Isn't that right, Oro?"
Oro grunted in confirmation as Wren nodded along with Palata's words. It would be smart to send some of their men in her direction to help with the aftermath.
"Though I must ask, Monarca-sama," Palata began. "Will your injuries be healed by the time you reach Alabasta?"
"I will be healed enough," Wren replied before anyone else could comment. "Crocodile is a force to be reckoned with that is for certain. However, while they might not mean to, Doffy's spy—the one I placed within Baroque Works—will be assisting me. As they carry out their mission, they will be thinning out the obstacles in my path."
If Wren was lucky, the spy will take out Crocodile's officers without Wren having to lift a finger.
"Good," Palata said. "Now, shall we discuss who shall head to Alabasta?"
As the meeting continued amongst the commanders of the organization, Wren only half paid attention. Her thoughts returned to the human pirates currently sleeping in her father's barn. They had to be heading for Alabasta as well considering they were carrying the princess of the country on their ship. She wondered if they would get in her way. The thought of them getting underfoot was unpleasing to say the least.
'While not ideal, if they do manage to cause me trouble, they might have to fall with all the others in my path,' Wren thought.
Nothing could stop her. Especially not now after this folly on her part. She would make things right. Even if it meant spilling more than just her enemies' blood.
As morning rolled around, the storm had disappeared leaving the sun to shine brightly overhead. Wren stepped out of her room stretching her arms up over her head. She winced at the pain that followed as she dropped her arms to her side. She had changed out of the large shirt that she had borrowed from some of her father's old clothes into a simple white blouse and a flowy, knee-length black skirt. She also wore a black corset that hugged around her torso just under her chest. She didn't have it too tight, however, as she didn't wish to agitate her wounds.
She didn't bother with shoes as she padded down the stairs into the kitchen bare footed. As she made it to the bottom, she gathered her thick, unruly locks into her hands and used a black ribbon to tie her hair back into high ponytail. It wasn't perfect, but she could really care less about that. As she brushed her ponytail over her shoulder, she saw she wasn't the only one in the kitchen. Tallulah was there as well, and she was sitting on the shoulder of a dark-haired woman.
The woman was shorter than Wren and even paler of skin. She wore a long-sleeved, blue dress that stopped at her ankles. And she wore a white apron over the dress, and she had the sleeves of the dress folded up to her elbows. She had her dark locks pulled back into a ponytail as well and had a white bandana wrapped around her head to hold her hair back out of her face. She turned towards Wren revealing a set of bright blue eyes and a sweet smile.
"Good-morning, sweet one." Tallulah greeted as the woman walked over to Wren.
The woman took Wren's hands into her own and gave them a gentle squeeze as her smile widened. Wren gave the woman a rare smile.
"Good-morning, Tallulah, Nana," Wren returned the greeting.
The woman Nana, who had been retired to her room for the night when the guests arrived, silently brushed the few loose strands of Wren's hair back from the girl's face. Nana was a silkie that has been carrying for the children of the Magier Family for many generations. She was given her name by Wren's great-great-and a couple more greats-grandmother who couldn't say 'nanny' as that was what Nana was meant to be for them. She could say 'nana', however, which is how Nana got her name.
"We hope you're hungry," Tallulah said. "Nana has been working on quite the spread for you and our guests."
Wren's brow quirked as she turned her head seeing the kitchen table was covered in breakfast foods. It seemed as if Nana had even made some fresh squeezed orange juice.
"I can see that," Wren said. "Speaking of guests, the one who's ill…how is she doing?"
She was hoping to hear she was stable enough to move, which would mean these pirates would be leaving soon.
"Nami is doing better," Tallulah replied though looked concerned. "Though we couldn't do much. Without the medicine needed to counter act the infection, the girl will die."
Wren hummed at this news as she picked up a piece of toast from the table. She'd have to make a mental note to never visit Little Garden.
"The pirates asked last night if they could remain at her side," Wren commented.
"It shouldn't be a problem now," Tallulah replied. "There is little magic can do for the girl now. Vladimir shouldn't need my assistance anymore."
Wren nodded in understanding as she looked out the window to the barn. She supposed it was time to get said guests up and going.
"I'll wake them now." Wren told the two fae. "Tallulah, you should probably make yourself scarce for now."
Tallulah nodded before she slipped from Nana's shoulder to the floor. She hopped up the steps quickly to hide away in one of the upstairs rooms. Once she was out of sight, Wren stepped outside in the bright sun. As Wren went to check in on the pirates, she saw Luffy, who had thrown open the barn door, was already out and running around excitedly.
"Luffy, come back inside!" Usopp called the boy. "You heard what Wren said about the neighbors!"
Luffy just laughed as he climbed up a tree to get a better look at the island. Wren sighed though wasn't surprised.
"You seem to have trouble doing as you are told." Wren said as she stopped underneath the tree to look up at Luffy.
At the sound of her voice, Usopp relaxed while stepping out with Zoro, who yawned, behind him. Luffy smiled down at Wren before jumping down to land in front of her.
"Wren, is Nami doing better?" Luffy asked. "Can we see her now?"
As he was asking the rest of the misfit crew came outside to hear about their friend.
"Father worked on breaking her fever all night," Wren said. "He managed to get it to break slightly. It isn't much, but he has bought her some time."
The pirates looked relieved to hear this as smiles broke out across their faces.
"I was told you may visit if you wish," Wren continued. "However, if you wish to leave as soon as possible to find the doctor my father mentioned, you need to focus on restocking your supplies."
Not that she wanted them to go further into the island. She'd rather them leave without restocking their supplies, but doubted she'd get what she wanted. Some of them seemed a bit bummed by her words but couldn't exactly argue with her logic.
"If you wish to eat before you head into the forest, breakfast has been prepared," Wren told them. "It is waiting in the kitchen."
"Ahh, Wren-chwan, you didn't have to bother with making us breakfast~" Sanji said as he twirled over to her. "But I'm sure anything you have made is delicious~"
"It wasn't me who made it." Wren told him simply as she turned to show the pirates inside the house.
Sanji watched her go feeling a bit stumped by her cool nature. Though he quickly shook it off as he went after the beautiful woman with his crewmates along with them. Luffy's mouth started to drool at the smell of food before he went barreling forward pass Wren, who stepped to the side in time, to get inside.
"Luffy, watch your manners!" Sanji snapped. "You nearly ran over Wren-chan!"
As Sanji went after their captain practically spitting and snarling in annoyance, Wren turned towards the others.
"Are they usually so lively?" She questioned as she heard Sanji's tune change when he spotted Nana who he immediately started complimenting.
Usopp sweat-dropped looking a bit embarrassed by his friends as Vivi gave a slight chuckle.
"Yes," She replied. "I know they seem like a bit much, but they're quite fun to be around."
Karoo quacked as if in agreement as he stood between Wren and Vivi. Wren scratched the duck underneath his chin, and he seemed to purr as he leaned into her touch happily. Vivi watched the interaction with a small smile on her face. Wren hasn't been very warm towards them. She has been a gracious host, but she made sure to let them know she was unhappy with their arrival. Though she obviously wasn't a bad person. Just wary of strangers.
"Once you finish eating and I've finished the morning work, I will take you through the island." Wren told the three pirates who remained outside with her. "The paths can be a bit tricky. To let you go in alone, you would surely get lost or taken."
She honestly didn't wish to personally take them into the forest, but she knew her father would be upset if she didn't. At the mention of being taken, Usopp stiffened up as he scooted behind Zoro who snorted at him.
"You mean by like…your neighbors?" Usopp whispered as if he didn't want to be overheard.
He even glanced around as if expecting one of them to pop up at any moment.
"Yes," Wren said. "They like their tricks and like to play games. Especially with humans. To them the games are harmless, but well, humans don't hold up as well as them. So, as I'm sure you can guess what is harmless to them won't be to you."
She pointed at Usopp as she said this while honestly amused by his reaction as he flinched.
"They almost sound like children," Vivi said with a curious tilt of her head.
"They certainly act like children at times," Wren said with a small shrug. "The neighbors are driven mostly by their whims. Logical reasoning doesn't usually come until after they've already acted—if it even comes at all. But they aren't malicious beings, which is why I ask that you don't bring any harm to them. Even if you find yourself in trouble, don't harm the neighbors. They aren't looking to hurt you intentionally, so please leave them be. This is all I ask."
Well, most of them won't anyway. There are a few of the older ones, however, who might try to cause serious injuries to these pirates. Like the ones who have faced the cruelty of humans before.
"What are these neighbors?" Zoro asked.
He then stiffened as a breeze suddenly whirled by with what sounded like giggling children entering his ears. A few shapes flew past, and the pirates gaped in shock as a few of the aerials flew around them. Wren sighed supposing that keeping the identity of the neighbors a secret just went out the window. Those aerials really know how to cause trouble.
She looked up unhappily when seeing the playful creatures were showing off to their guests. Luffy and Sanji hurried out when hearing the noise and they too watched on in wide eyes as the aerials performed a little dance for them and used their control of the wind to teasingly ruffle their hair and clothes. Nana stepped into the doorway and smiled up at the flying creatures who seemed rather pleased with themselves.
"The fae," Wren said reluctantly as she held out her hand.
Levant flew down to land on the girl's hand. She hugged Wren's fingers gently with her wide black eyes looking up happily at Wren.
"T…they're little fairies?" Usopp asked as he came around Zoro. "That's not so scary."
"So cool!" Luffy exclaimed as he hurried over to look at Levant.
Levant bashfully hid her face in Wren's cupped fingers, which had Vivi cooing at how cute she was. Wren shook her head as she knew Levant was anything but bashful. The little creature was eating up the attention.
"We're supposed to be afraid of this thing?" Zoro asked pointing.
Wren frowned at the swordsmen as Levant who lifted her face blew a raspberry at the green-haired man. The swordsman looked surprised by the action. Though he was soon glaring at Usopp who was snickering behind his hands at what happened.
"Her name is Levant." Wren said. "She is an aerial. A smaller class of fae. There are much larger, more powerful fae who call this island home. These creatures come in all shapes and sizes. Like, Nana for example."
She gestured to Nana with her free hand as the pirates turned to look at the very human-looking woman. Said silkie was offering fruit slices to the aerials who greedily ate them up.
"Though you shouldn't underestimate the aerials." Wren continued. "While small and harmless at heart, they have led many travelers to their deaths."
Levant giggled flying back into the air as she put her arms behind her back with an innocent look in her eyes.
"We didn't mean to harm them," Levant said. "We only wanted to play with the humans. Though humans are such fragile things."
She said this with a disappointed tone as Usopp returned to being frightened. He even flinched as Mistral circled over his head.
"Are we going now, sweet one?" Levant asked. "Into the forest?"
"The others wish to meet them." Mistral added as she flew down by Levant. "They are very eager, yes. Especially, the Spriggan."
"I'm sure he is," Wren said dryly.
The dark fairy, Sable, hated humans. He found them to be volatile and untrustworthy. Not that Wren blamed him. Considering everything he has gone through.
"Once they have had their fill and I am free to guide them, we will venture into the forest," Wren told the aerials. "Until then behave yourselves."
"Yes, Misce." Mistral said as she and Levant herded the other aerials away.
Wren's jaw tensed at the sound of the name the aerial spoke, which didn't go unnoticed by Sanji whose brow quirked. Though her expression returned to normal so quickly that he wasn't sure if he really saw what he had thought he saw.
"Let's head inside," Wren said. "We don't want the food Nana prepared to grow cold."
Luffy didn't have to be told twice as he hurried back inside to eat more food. As the other pirates followed, Wren noticed some of the neighbors along the tree line. It seemed they felt braver now that the pirates knew of their existence. She sighed because this could complicate things.
Wren had finished her breakfast quickly as she wanted to get the morning chores out of the way. Normally her father would do this with Nana's help. However, with Vladimir caring for Nami and with Nana tending to the guests, neither were able to do their morning work. Vladimir already expressed how he didn't wish for Wren to do anything that might strain her injuries. And as usual, Wren promptly ignored him. Hince why she was out in the garden picking what was ready to be harvested.
"Hey, Wren, do you need any help?"
Wren looked up see Usopp walking in her direction with a basket already in his hands.
"It's alright," Wren said. "You're a guest. It would be rude to ask you to work."
She said this matter-of-factly as she placed more tomatoes in her own basket. Usopp just grinned.
"Yeah, but you're helping us by taking care of our sick crewmate, so the least we can do is help in return." Usopp said as he crouched down next to her. "Besides, I'm pretty amazing at farm work. The best in my whole village. No one can pick vegetables or wrangle farm animals like me! In fact, one time I had to wrestle a 5-ton bull before he could rampage through the village!"
As he continued to boast, Wren blinked at the ridiculousness of his story. Even so, however, she did chuckle slightly.
"Is that so?" Wren questioned. "I'll keep that in mind if Goliath decides to act out today."
She nodded towards the 1-ton bull who was over in the pasture with his three ladies—Lulabell, Maggie, and Minnie Moo. The large animal lifted his head at the sound of his name as he continued to chew on the grass in his mouth. Usopp paled at the sight of the large, white bull while giving a nervous chuckle.
"Yeah, you can just leave it to me." Usopp said as he began helping Wren in the garden. "Because I am a brave warrior of the sea!"
Wren hummed in reply as she and Usopp continued the garden work. As they worked, more of the Straw Hats came out from the cottage. Apparently, Tallulah had gave them set instructions to follow to help Wren finish work faster because Zoro went to cutting wood, Luffy was sent to feed the animals with Nana, and Sanji was tasked with helping Usopp and Wren in the garden. Vivi remained inside with Vladimir, however, as she helped the man get what he needed to make fever reducing medicine to give to Nami when the crew left this island and made their way to Drum Kingdom.
"Wren-chan, are you and your father the only people who live on this island?" Sanji questioned as he was crouched beside Wren.
Wren paused momentarily to look up from her work to glance at the blonde. She stared at him a moment. Looking into his visible eye to see if he might have some kind of ulterior motive to wondering how many people lived on this island. However, after searching his gaze for a moment, she decided he only seemed genuinely curious.
"I don't live here with my father." Wren finally said. "I only visit from time to time. But, yes, he's the only person here."
Sanji tilted his head as he lifted his head to look around at the surrounding area. While most of it was forest, there were some old, wood and stone structures scattered around. Like houses had stood there many, many years ago, but have long since been abandoned and fallen into ruin.
"There used to be more people." Wren continued when seeing Sanji's confusion. "But that was hundreds of years ago."
Sanji hummed wondering what happened to the people as he continued to help Wren and Usopp.
"Does this island have a name?" Usopp questioned.
"It's known as Magus." Wren told him. "Birthplace of the mages."
This caught the sharpshooter and cook's attention as Wren placed her hand against the dirt. She muttered something under her breath and the boys watched with awe as light seemed to filter up from the dirt and travel through the garden. Any plants that seemed damaged from the storm last night or were wilting glowed as they perked up before their very eyes. Once she finished doing that, she stood with her basket held in both her arms.
"That should take care of the garden." Wren said. "If we hurry and help the others finish, we can start taking stock of your supplies and see what we need to find to help you on your journey."
She then walked away mentally dreading what was to come. She's put it off as long as possible, but she couldn't any longer…it was time to enter the forest.
The smell of rain returned to the air around Magus Island as deep within its forest, a figure passed agitatedly. The figure was the size of a child with pale-grey skin and pitch back hair that fell messily around its youthful-appearing face. Its eyes were pale yellow with white pupils, which had turned into slits due to the creature's annoyance. Its form was hunched over and draped in tattered clothes.
"Humans on the island?" Sable the Spriggan hissed as turned his eyes towards his unwanted guest. "Why haven't they been dealt with? Misce is on the island. They shouldn't have managed to last the night!"
The one whom he spoke to was wearing a long gray cloak pulled over them, which covered any distinguishing features. The only things truly visible were their glowing white eyes from underneath the hood and their ashen gray hands gripping the walking stick they carried.
"I know you are aware that when Misce's father is involved that she does what he asks of her…even if it does go against her own ideology." The other being—Greylock—hummed. "It seems the Rose Mage is the one who extended his hospitality upon the humans."
Sable felt his anger rise at the mention of the lone mage who called this island home. Though it pains Sable to admit it, Vladimir was of their kin. His kind might have been born first of humans, but mages have long since then passed over into the realm of the fae. They were considered children of their queen just as much as the rest of them were. That is why Vladimir has been allowed to stay here amongst them. However…
"He knows the rules," Sable growled. "No humans are permitted on this island not after that!"
He spat the word while recalling the last time humans came to this island and wreaked havoc. Some many of their kin were lost, and those who did escape from the clutches of those greedy, vile humans were never the same after.
"And father or not, Misce should not have done as he asked!" Sable continued. "She knows more than most of our kin how dangerous the human filth is!"
He slammed his fist into the tree beside him causing it to crack due to the force. However, a moment later he used his magic to reverse the damage he had done.
"Hmm, yes, you and Misce both have been victims to humans," Greylock hummed casually. "Both of you carrying your own scars from your separate dealings with them. This must really feel like an act of betrayal to you for Misce to bring the humans into the forest."
His words caused Sable to stiffen with his pointed ears twitching as he slowly turned his head to glare at the much older being.
"Into the forest?" Sable repeated. "She's guiding them farther into the island?!"
Greylock nodded his head as he took a seat across one of the large rocks behind him. He almost looked like an old man taking a rest as he leaned against his walking stick.
"As we speak, they are walking up the north trail." Greylock said. "I believe they are looking to gather supplies."
Sable shook in barely suppressed rage as he wondered just how Wren could do such a thing. Let humans into their home when knowing the harm they could cause. They both were scarred both physically and mentally to the point neither one of them would fully heal. Sable had lost his wings…he had lost his friends…and he had lost the joy he had once carried. He could never forgive the humans for taking all that away from him. He thought Wren was the same, but it seemed he was wrong.
"Arrrgggh!" He shouted in anger as he took off into the forest in a fit of rage.
Greylock didn't even bother watching him leave as he gave a thoughtful hum.
"The first part of the game is set." Greylock spoke to himself. "Time for the second to be set into motion. I wonder…how will these humans fair and just how much Misce is willing to go to protect them at her father's request."
Once all the chores were done, it was decided that Usopp and Vivi along with Karoo would stay behind in case Vladimir needed any help with Nami. So, Wren led Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro into the forest with the three pirates carrying large baskets on their backs to carry supplies as they gathered.
"This place is so cool!" Luffy said as he looked around. "Even the trees are different here than any other island I've been too!"
It was true. Not even Zoro and Sanji were very familiar with trees such as the ones around them. Of course, they've mostly been to tropical islands. This island was very different. The terrain was different too. Something about it cast an almost eerie atmosphere, but it was surprisingly peaceful as well.
"Make sure to keep me in your sights at all times." Wren called over her shoulder. "And don't leave the path unless I deem it safe."
Luffy only laughed not seeming to hear her as he kept looking around in excitement. Wren gave him a look over her shoulder.
"Are things really that dangerous here?" Zoro questioned. "People have obviously lived here before."
He gestured to the abandoned house they were passing as Wren led the way down the path.
"And where are they now, hmm?" Wren retorted. "Humans tried living amongst the neighbors before and for several generations there was peace. And those humans exposed to the neighbors' natural magic for so long became mages. All was well for a time, but as you can see, things went wrong in the end."
She gestured to another house that looked as if it had been torn down by some kind of beast as there were gashes in the foundation and what was left of the roof was caved in.
"The neighbors can be dangerous whether they mean to be or not." Wren continued. "And humans tend to be destructive…they take what they want and hurt those who get in their way. And their fear for the unknown lead them to lashing out."
She said this all matter-of-factly with no heat in her words as she kept her gaze forward.
"You have a low opinion on humans," Zoro commented. "What did they do to you that was so bad?"
Wren didn't reply at first as her shoulders tensed slightly. Sanji turned to snap at Zoro for prying into sensitive matters and for upsetting Wren, but she spoke up before he could.
"I didn't lose the use of my eye in an accident, nor did I earn any of the others scars in such a way, rookie." Wren said simply as she paused in their trek to look back at Zoro. "Though I suppose the human who did this to me, didn't mean to cause so much damage. After all, visible scarring on slaves leads to a drop in value."
Her words had the three men freezing as they looked at Wren with wide eyes. The look in the woman's remaining eye became distance as if she was remembering something unpleasant. Sanji took an unsure step forward as if wanting to comfort the woman, but she snapped out of it as she shook her head. She then narrowed her gaze at the three men in front of her.
"I don't like humans." Wren continued. "Moreover, I don't trust them. The only reason you are getting help from me is because my father requested it of me, nothing more, understand?"
Her tone turned dark as she was obviously getting very annoyed with the conversation.
"Now, now, sweet one," A voice spoke up. "No reason to lose that temper of yours. You really need to learn how to play well with others."
The boys whirled around seeing a large cat sitting on a rock not far from them. The cat had long fluffy, golden fur and its eyes a deep green. It was like the animal was looking into their very souls as its eyes bore into them. Though Luffy didn't seem put off by the strange cat as he stepped forward.
"Hey, a talking cat!" Luffy said with a laugh.
Wren was lightly frowning at said cat who seemed pleased with itself if it's twitching tail and almost smug expression was anything to go by.
"Don't be ridiculous, Luffy!" Sanji snapped. "Cats don't talk."
"I have to agree with the stupid love-cook on this one, Luffy." Zoro said with a scoff. "Animals don't talk."
Luffy pouted because he knew he had heard the cat speaking, and there wasn't anyone else around who could have done it.
"I suppose not normally," The voice said again causing the three boys to slowly turn to look back at the cat who continued, "However, I am not just your typical house cat."
It was silent for a long moment as Wren, who had lost some of her anger, watched in mild amusement as Sanji's mouth fell open allowing his cigarette to fall from his mouth. Zoro was in the same state of shock as his eyes looked ready to bulge out of his head.
"That cat just talked!" They said pointing at said feline as Luffy laughed once more.
"You two are rather rude," The cat said to Zoro, who grunted in annoyance, Sanji whose brow twitched at the cat's words. "Didn't your mothers ever teach you that it's rude to point?"
Zoro growled at the golden-furred cat as Sanji's curled brow twitched even more. Both looked as if they were going to yell at the feline when Wren stepped in.
"I believe that's enough, Havel." Wren said with a tired sigh. "You've had your fun."
Havel huffed though did give a nod as his tail swished behind him. He then let out a surprised hiss when Luffy scooped him up into his rubbery arms. He was about to snap at the boy, but Luffy started scratching underneath his chin, which broke Havel into happy purrs.
"So, is he a fairy too?!" Luffy asked as he continued to hold Havel. "I didn't know cats were fairies!"
Wren's brow quirked at the boy's enthusiasm as the tension from earlier was all but gone. She then sighed.
"As Havel pointed out, he isn't your typical house cat," Wren reminded the straw-hated captain. "He is a cat sithe. However, they are typically harmless and blend in so well with other felines that they can be found living amongst humans as house pets."
She said this while casting a look at Havel who chuckled in amusement at her jab.
"It's a comfortable life." Havel said with a shrug. "Though I haven't lived with a human companion in over 300 years or so…maybe longer. As you know, I am terrible with keeping track of time."
The boys gapped at this information as they had to wonder just how old the feline was.
"As are most fae," Wren commented. "Now, is there a reason you are gracing us with your presence? It's odd for you to be so far away from Cain."
Havel shifted at the mention of Cain as he wiggled out of Luffy's arms to climb onto the boy's shoulders. Luffy didn't seem to mind as he reached up to scratch Havel behind the ears.
"I came to warn you, Misce." Havel said. "Your presence in this forest with these pirates has caused a stir. However, more concerning than that is that Greylock is on the move. He was last seen heading towards Pendragon Lake after speaking with the Spriggan."
Wren stiffened at the mention of Greylock, which didn't go unnoticed by the boys.
"The house?" Wren questioned.
"Is safe." Havel assured her. "Not even Greylock would dare cause trouble there. Not when your father still protects it. After all, Vladimir is still quite powerful. Not that its surprising…considering your bloodline."
Wren frowned at the mention of her bloodline as she tried to decide what to do. They haven't even begun to collect supplies. However, things were becoming dangerous for these humans fast.
'Though I knew this would happen,' Wren thought. 'And why should I care if anything happens to them? I owe them nothing…and I didn't wish to bring them out here in the first place.'
This was all her father's idea. He didn't want the pirates to set sail without supplies. However, she had told him it would have been better to let them sail without supplies rather than risk taking them into the forest. Now, they have this problem. Her father should have listened to her.
'I know you don't trust humans.' His words filtered through her head. 'But remember it was a human who saved you. And it is a human who you call your brother.'
'That means nothing,' Wren thought as her eyes narrowed and her lip set in a firm line. 'A few humans might have shown me kindness over the years, but that does not obligate me to do the same for humans in return. Especially not ones I have no relations with…'
Though even as she thought this a certain blonde's face appeared in her mind. She frowned as her hand clenched into a fist at her side.
'Though I suppose you weren't obligated to save me either, were you, Cora-san?' Wren thought as she thought of the man's smiling face.
She let out a sigh knowing what she had to do. Even if she didn't like it, she had to keep these pirates safe. However, the thought of going against those she saw as her own kind, made her sick to her stomach…Unfortunately though, it wouldn't be the first time she's had to raise a blade to companion…an ally. She can only hope she can return the pirates to the safety of the house before Greylock sets his full scheme into motion.
Coco: And that would be the end of chapter two of this rewrite. I hope you've been enjoying it so far. And now to end this chapter, we have another character profile~
Name: Magier B. Vladimir
Age: 42
D.O.B: June 8
*Shares birthday with Saldeath and Lacroix
Origin: North Blue (Era Island)
Height: 187.96 cm (6'2")
Race: Mage
Affiliation(s): Magus Kingdom/Era Island
*Vladimir is a high official of Era though he doesn't wish to return to the island. The title he carries is Governor of Water, which is the title of the mage with the highest authority on Era. There are three counterparts to this position. There are the Governors of Wind, Earth, and Fire who reside on one of the other three islands of mages in the Four Blues.
*I will go into more detail later on concerning how the islands all coordinate and act as one kingdom (Magus Kingdom) while still being their own separate communities as well. And I will explain how their government works and the four islands have their own cultures that make them different from each other.
Weapon(s)/Wand: Vladimir's wand is dark blue in color and about the length of his arm. It is slender and comes to a point at the end. The end of the wand is adorned with a raindrop-shaped sapphire and if one closely enough, they'll notice that within the blue gem waves can be seen rolling and crashing against the smooth sides of the gem.
Family: Magier B. Starling-ancestor (deceased), Cain-ancestor, Maiger B. Joseph-father (deceased) Magier B. Angelica-mother (deceased) Magier B. Aibell-wife (deceased), Magier B. Wren-daughter, unnamed older sister, unnamed brother-in-law, two unnamed nephews and two unnamed nieces (through older sister) Bastion Nightingale-younger sister, Bastion Children-nieces/nephews, Tallulah-familiar
*The Magiers are a large family. Vladimir's sisters have several children making him the odd one out by only having one child. Though Aibell and him had talked about trying for a boy before the incident that killed Aibell.
*I had thought about giving Wren a brother because she's had one in previous versions, but that was before I planned to make her the adopted/sworn sister of Law. In a previous version (way back when), she actually had two brothers. One older and one younger. Those brothers were Cain and Abel and Vladimir was their father and Starling their mother. So, I switched some things around later on to get to this version of Wren's family.
*There is a reason why I'm keeping some of Wren's family as unknown as they'll be making appearances later on in the story and I don't want to give them away just yet because they happen to be related to some canon characters in the story. But if you guys have guesses/theories on which family Wren's aunt married into, I'd love to hear them.
Trivia:
*Vladimir is sometimes referred as the Rose Mage by the neighbors. This is because most neighbors don't have names and tend to address each other by what they are. Like, how some address Havel as cat-sithe or Sable as Spriggan. The neighbors will tend to pick a distinguishing feature or characteristic of a mage and address them by such. Like Vladimir is known as the Rose Mage due to his red hair.
*Vladimir like his daughter is a fan of tea but he prefers drinking Darjeeling over Earl Grey (side note: I had thought about renaming these teas due to the fact some of them other typically named after people or the places they come from. Such places don't exist in the One Piece world, but I was afraid it'd make things too confusing if I began renaming teas.)
(Second side note/fun fact about me: I actually can't stand tea XD It any shape or form. I've tried a wide variety and haven't found a single one that I like. Sweet tea being my least favorite, which is like a sin where I live since I'm from the Southern side of the US XD)
*Vladimir is the first doctor in his family since Cain, who mostly studied medicine for the sake of Starling due to her weak constitution.
*Vladimir formed a familiar bond with Tallulah when he was ten years of age, so they've been together as mage and familiar for 32 years.
*In the previous version, Vladimir's familiar was an aerial, but that didn't seem like the right choice for the man associated with the element of water, so I changed it XD
