Chapter 4 – Dates and Deadlines
The next morning Harry woke early to find Dobby quietly sitting in one of the Louis XV chairs swinging his legs. This was made more amusing as his feet only reached half way to the ground. His eyes were closed and he must have been humming a tune to himself. Harry moved and Dobbys eyes opened and he smiled.
"Good morning Master Harry. Breakie be ready when you want." Dobby said and popped away to provide Harry with some privacy. Harry got up and dressed in his newly sized clothes. He really needed to ask Dobby about what happened to his clothes.
"I'm ready when you are Dobby." Harry said to the air. A full english breakfast appeared on the coffee table in front of him. This was a meal worthy of Ron. Harry dug in with gusto. Even with the filling dinner the night before he felt like he hadn't eaten in a week.
"Dobby. I feel more hungry than usual. Is that a problem?" Harry asked.
"Master Harry be using much magics. Family magics need learning. Learning hard on body. Yous needs more foods for magics to grow too. You eat what you needs." Dobby said.
Harry nodded around a mouthful of kippers and continued eating. If there was one thing Harry knew was that talking with your mouth full wasn't good. He had a prime example of Ron for that. That thought brought a scowl to his face. Swallowing before he talked.
"When is our meeting with Griphook?" Harry asked.
"Griphook says 10:00 is ok but you can come anytime. Yous wants to get it over with?" Dobby asked. Harry nodded.
"Best to pull the plaster off quickly. Waiting will not make it easier. Let me get my notes and let's go."
"Dobby go first and make sure now good." Dobby said as he popped away. A few minutes later he was back and took Harrys arm.
"Good morning Griphook. May your vaults over flow and with your enemies gold" Harry said.
Griphook smiled. "Ah. The good old days Harry. May your vault fill to the top and your enemies run in fear at your sight."
Harry smiled. He liked this goblin. "What shall we deal with first Griphook?"
"Did you review all of the transactions Dobby and I did for your accounts?"
Harry nodded. "I agree with them all with one exception. The Weasleys."
Griphook nodded. From what Dobby had said this would be a difficult one for Harry to handle.
"I would like the payments cut off and I would like a letter sent to the head of house and the heir apparent." Looking at Dobby. "Did I get that right?" Dobby nodded and handed Griphook the letter and notes Harry had penned with the help of Dobby.
Griphook looked it over and nodded. "You are being extraordinarily generous Harry. However, if you wish this can be done. When do you want this to be delivered?" Griphook asked.
"Immediately if possible. I believe Bill is the oldest and would be the heir apparent and I'm not sure where he is. Mr. Weasley works for the Ministry." Harry said.
"We are aware of where Mr. Bill Weasley is and will get this to him immediately. I will dispatch a Gringotts owl to Arthur Weasley. They should both be here before the end of our meeting." Griphook tapped the letter and it copied into triplicate and he waved his hand and two of them folded and landed into his outbox and flashed away. The third was labeled copy in red and put into a folder.
"As to the others items?" Griphook prompted. Harry looked at Dobby who gave him an encouraging nod. Harry shrugged his shoulders.
"You two are going to make me all Slytherin but I do agree. It seems there are a lot of people taking advantage of me and I want it stopped. Evict them all immediately and I want back rent at market value for each property. Also bill them for damages. I want those properties either empty and ready for renting or if you have acceptable tenants rent them immediately. Except the one outside Galway Ireland. We will be moving there as soon as it is ready." Harry said. "Also wait on the Privet Drive until I am ready to move out. I would like to serve the papers myself if that is allowed?"
"You can. However, a Gringotts legal server will need to be with you. I would be happy to provide that service at a time of your choosing." Griphook said with that evil Goblin smile.
"You're enjoying this, aren't you." Harry said teasing the Goblin.
"Very much so Mr. Potter. Very much and thank you, again, for allowing me to be your account manager."
"I feel like I should be thanking you so let's call it even and turn the tables on all those who have caused us harm." Harry said.
The rest of the meeting was resolved in short order. Fortunately all ten properties were occupied by wizards or people with the knowledge. They would be evicted this evening just before dinner. The Goblins will present a bill for back rent and either collect it immediately or the occupant and all of their legally owned property will be removed and place on the lawn. For a fee the Goblins will offer to place their property into an extendable trunk so they can move it more easily.
As Harry was signing the last document and plans were in place for the evening there was a knock on the door. A young looking Goblin entered and spoke with Griphook in their language. Opening the door Bill and Arthur Weasley entered the office.
"Hello Harry. What's so important that I needed to be pulled from work?" Arthur asked. Bill being more astute with Goblin culture and seeing the look on Griphooks face made a snap decision.
"Lord Potter and account manager Griphook." Bill started as he gave a respectable bow. "What may the Weasley clan do for you today." Arthur gave his son a confused look but when Bill nodded for him to bow as he had Arthur followed his sons example.
"Lord Potter, what can the Weasley clan do for you today?" Arthur stumbled out. Confused but realizing he was out of his depth here Arthur decided to allowed Bill to lead the conversation.
"Please be seated gentleman. We have a couple of issues to discuss." Harry said and waved to the seats. Bill noticed there was no offer of refreshments so this wasn't a social call.
"It has come to my attention that Molly Weasley has been receiving payments from the Potter accounts for the past ten years. Are you aware of this?" Harry asked. The surprise on both of the mens faces was proof that neither knew. Harry continued "Also there is a betrothal contract between myself and Ginny. Signed by Molly Weasley and Albus Dumbledore."
The shock was evident in telling that this wasn't something that either of the men knew anything about. Harry realized Molly and Albus were the guilty parties. Still in shock Arthur was unable to speak.
"Lord Potter, You have caught us unaware of these dealings. I ask what reparations you wish from the Weasley clan to make this right?" Bill asked. The worried look on his face was telling to Harry. Dobby had explained the penalties for line theft and this was very close to that line and Bill knew it.
"I can't believe Molly would do this." Arthur said "Not that I'm questioning either of you." Arthur added quickly.
Harry nodded to Griphook and the Goblin slid the papers between the two men and let them read. When they were finished reading Arthur looked at Bill. They both realized this could ruin the family.
"There is one more item we need to discuss. Ron has been receiving payments from the Potter account also, approved by Dumbledore. Did either of you know about this?" Harry asked and nodded at Griphook who produced another sheet of paper for the shell shocked men.
"Lord Potter neither of us knew about any of this before now. Know that the Weasleys will make this right in anyway you deem appropriate. I can't believe mom, Molly Weasley that is, would do this but proof is before us." Bill said looking at his father.
"Yes. We will do what is necessary to make this right. If we must dissolve the Weasley line we will." Arthur said. There was a catch in his voice which told Harry the man was deeply hurt and hurting.
Griphook saw the sag in Harrys shoulders and realized the poor boy needed a moment to just talk with the Weasleys. "Lord Potter. Could I take a brief recess in our meeting. I will send in some refreshments while I attend to an urgent matter." With that Griphook left the office.
There was silence as the same young Goblin entered with a tray of drinks and biscuits and left. Dobby poured for everyone and returned to Harrys side.
"I'm sorry. I've just been hit with a lot of crap recently. The bottom line is I don't want to marry Ginny. She's got that fan-girl look on her face and I would be her trophy. I'm also not attracted to her. I don't want to ruin the Weasley family either. My advisors here have told me I should deal with this like an attack. Mr. Weasley, You have always been good to me. Maybe Molly had ulterior motives or maybe Dumbledore was feeding her a line. I don't know. There is a clause in the contract that I can buy out of it if we had never had sex. Well that has never happened so I could activate that and be done with this. My concern is Molly, Ron, and possibly Ginny. What to do with them?" Harry said and slumped back in his chair. Taking a drink he closed his eyes.
"May I talk with my father privately for a moment Lord Potter?" Bill asked. Harry nodded and the two men walked to the far end of the room.
Dobby patted Harrys arm and handed him a biscuit. "Eat Lord Potter" the smirking elf said. This helped to jar Harry out of his funk a little and he smiled.
"Cheeky elf. Thank you Dobby."
When the older men returned Harry saw a hopeful look on Bills face. "Lord Potter. If we require an unbreakable vow from the three of them to never initiate contact with you again in anyway, including by proxy. Would that be sufficient? We would also be willing to remove the younger two from Hogwarts if that would help?"
Harry nodded. "The vow would be sufficient. I don't see Ginny as a problem. I'm not sure about Ron. He has back stabbed me enough times that I've cut off all ties with him. I don't see him being able to hold it in the next time he sees me." Dobby put his hand on Harrys arm. Harry held up a finger to the Weasleys as he leaned over to listen to Dobbys suggestion.
"Really" That works?" Harry asked in amazement. Dobby nodded.
"Bill, as a curse breaker would you be able to put a Pharaohs curse on a small object and have it accepted by the three of them?" Harry asked.
Bill thought for a moment and smiled at the young man. "That would be poetic justice if it was ever enacted. Yes. I would need Gringotts approval but considering who you are that shouldn't be a problem."
"Pharaohs curse?" Arthur asked.
"It will render the individual catatonic like a mummy if they even think of going against the order built into the curse. If I put the curse on a small rock Harry can keep that and his magic will send out a pulse to people that are named in the curse. As long as they don't think about contacting or interacting with Harry, or anyone associated with Harry, in anyway they will be fine. Each time they think or plan any action against Lord Potter they will be rendered catatonic for a longer period. This is so the Pharaoh would have time to escape." Bill explained as Griphook entered the room.
Griphook sat looking expectantly at the group.
Bill explained what was discussed and Griphook nodded. "That is a very good idea Mr. Weasley. That will allow the younger two to get their education if they clear their minds of Lord Potter. Will this be acceptable with you Lord Potter?" Griphook asked.
"Including what we talked about, yes. Will the Goblin nation allow Bill to cast the curse?" Harry asked. Griphook nodded as he slid a money bag towards Harry.
"I'm been told by my advisors that I should fight the contract and not pay. I will also not be seeking restitution for the moneys taken to date however they have been stopped. This is all contingent on the stone being in my hand within forty-eight hours. Is that enough time?" Harry asked looking at Bill. Bill in turn looked to Griphook.
"Mr Weasley. I have discussed this situation with Ragnok. He will allow this under your work agreement. He has given me permission to make whatever requirements Lord Potter needs, including your time. Is two days sufficient?"
"Yes sir. It will be completed in that time but I will deliver it to your hand." Bill said to Griphook.
Harry stood and held out his hand. "I'm sorry it has come to this but I'm afraid I will not be coming to the Burrow in the future. I'm sure this was concocted by Dumbledore but I must protect myself."
The two men shook his hand and looked at the bag of gold. "I feel bad you are paying us when we should be paying you for this transgression." Arthur said.
"You took me in when I needed a home. I still remember that and when I really needed help your sons were there for me. See this as a way for me to help you out of a bad situation."
After they left Harry slumped into the chair. "Does it get better after this?"
"You did well Harry. That is probably the most difficult item you will need to manage in the near future. Is there anything else I can do for you?" Griphook asked.
Harry looked at Dobby who shook his head no.
"I believe we are done. Is there anything else you need from me?" Harry asked.
"No Harry. We are all set. I will let you know when the Galway property is available. It should be within the week." Griphook rose and shook Harry and Dobbys hands. With a nod and a pop Harry was back in his room at Privet Dr.
After food and a rest Harry found himself back in the gravel pit working on his family magic. Finding more clay he worked a single piece into a respectable vase. A simple outline but functional. It didn't melt when he lowered it to the ground. He did have a moment of panic and thanks to Dobby he recovered. Harry was leaning over to grasp the clay in the ground and found it deeper than he realized. Losing his balance he fell face first towards the ground. With both arms up to his elbows he couldn't stop himself and the next moment he was waist deep in the ground with his hips at ground level.
Harry started to panic when he felt Dobbys hand on his leg pulling him out. It was slow going and Harry couldn't hold his breath that long. He exhaled and had to inhale. To his surprise it worked. Part of the family magic he could breath under ground while searching for material. Dobby finally pulled him to the surface and Harry was amazed to see he was not caked in dirt as expected. Blinking a few times Harry started laughing.
"Can I swim under ground?" Harry asked. Dobby shrugged his shoulders. This wasn't something either had realized was a possibility. Harry walked to the sheer cliff of rock and dirt and pushed his arms and head into the dirt wall. He slipped in easily and opened his eyes. He could see and identify all the materials around him. Both natural and manmade, trash in most cases. Harry reached deeper when he noticed a ring and pulled it out. It was a simple gold band with a small diamond in it.
"This is so cool. I wonder if I can swim through the ground to a different place? What do you think Dobby?" Harry asked as he handed the ring to the elf. Dobby looked concerned but again just shrugged. He didn't know.
"Master Harry. Yous try walking in wall while Dobby hold yous hand?"
"Good idea." Harry said grabbing the tiny hand of his elf and stepped confidently into the wall and was gone except his hand. Dobby held on to his masters hand tightly. Afraid if he let go his master would fall and never be seen again. The hand moved along the wall about twenty feet and Harry pulled himself out. There was a moment of concern when the hand stopped and dropped several feet but it recovered, climbing a little so Dobby had to levitate himself but the little elf never released his death grip on his masters hand.
"That was cool. It takes a fair amount of concentration to keep the ground below my feet solid but I'm getting the hang of it. Watch this." Harry said. With that he started submerging while standing still. He sunk up to his waist then back to walking on the ground.
"Imagine the advantage this would be in a fight. Dobby go stand about five feet away from the big rock." Harry moved to the other side of the rock. Leaning over the side Harry said. "Don't move." and pulled his head back.
Several moments later Harry tapped Dobby on his back. The poor elf almost fell over from shock. Then he smiled.
"Most strange Master Harry. I could tell yous near but not where. Maybe I learn how later."
"Looks like we both have some learning to do. Back to my first project." Harry went back to the vase. It was about a foot tall and matched his family memories. With a thought and a few hand movements the vase was painted with simple horizontal blue lines of different widths and shades of blue. The vase lowered to the ground gently.
"I'm going to try to fire it now. That's what muggles call it when they use the kiln. The magic says it should only take a few minutes not overnight like non magicals need to do. Stand back and be sure to protect yourself if needed."
Dobby nodded and moved next to the little pond. At Dobbys nod Harry closed his eyes and gathered his magic. It seemed to flow much easier than the other day and in a second the wall of fire surrounded the vase. A few more seconds and Harry could tell he reached the boiling point of water phase. He opened his eyes and saw the steam escaping from the top of the ring of fire. Holding the temperature there for ten seconds he knew the water was gone and increased the temperature. Harry knew he had to remove the water from the clay before increasing the temperature or the vase would explode. He pushed more magic into the fire in ten seconds it was to the point where he needed to hold it to properly fire the vase. With a slight movement of his hands he enveloped the vase all around with the fire. Holding his hand like he was holding the ball of fire Harry concentrated on curing the vase and he could feel the clay hardening. Harry had beads of sweat on his forehead but he held still to make the fire work as he had learned.
About ten minutes later Harry waved the fire away and brought in a gentle breeze to cool the red hot vase. A couple of minutes later Harry picked up the vase. It was a little warm but no more than a hot cup of tea.
"Umm Master Harry should yous be picking up so soon?" Dobby asked. Looking worried.
Harry put it down. "It was a little warm but not bad. I've had tea cups hotter than that." Looking down at the vase he noticed he had put it on old newspaper on the ground. The paper had burst into flame and was almost gone by the time he looked back.
"Yous need be checking much heat." Dobby said.
Harry nodded and using his magic reached out only to find the vase was still over five hundred degrees. Checking his hands Harry was surprised to see them unharmed.
"I guess I don't need to test that." He mentioned off hand. Waving his hands again a cooling breeze surrounded the vase and Harry watched intently as the temperature dropped until it was the same as the surrounding air.
Harry started to waver and Dobby put a chair, umbrella, and table with water beside him. Harry drank two entire glasses before saying anything. Harry was proud that he could handle his family magics and that he actually created something. It reminded him of a vase he had seen in a history book when he was in muggle school.
Back in his room at Privet drive Dobby put the vase on the shelf next to the Grimoire while Harry showered. For dinner that evening Dobby brought him fish and chips with mashed peas and butter beer. Dobby remembered that Harry preferred malt vinegar so there was a little bottle on the table with the food. The smell caught Harrys attention as he left the bathroom and his stomach growled. It also caught the attention of the larger Dursleys and Harry could hear Vernon lumbering up the stairs to catch him before he returned to his room. Harry prepared for the encounter as Vernon was already in the way.
"Boy, what are you doing up here. You can't be cooking unless you are cooking for us." He bellowed in Harrys face. Much to Vernons surprise his outburst had no effect on Harry. Harry looked at him like he was a mildly annoying bug.
"Move."
"What. You ungrateful brat." Vernon yelled and took a swing at Harry. Harry stepped to the side and into the plaster wall. After Vernons hand smashed against the wall then Harry popped back out.
"Go away before I get angry." Harry said with his best Snape sneer. Harry was running his fingers through the wall like he was playing with water in a pond. This had the desired effect which was to make Vernon angrier. Vernon lunged at Harry and grabbed him by the neck. Harry just pulled them both back and into the wall. Vernon was shocked and released Harry, not realizing that would stop the enchantment on his arms. Harry appeared beside the large man who now had his arms stuck in the wall up to his elbows. Harry leaned back and looked in the room to the side and he could see the pudgy fingers of his uncle waggling and trying to grasp at anything.
"Leave me alone." Harry said over his shoulder as he entered his room and closed the door.
"Dobby that smells amazing. Thank you." Harry said.
"Yous most welcome Master Harry. I mades it smells extra good so nasty muggles smell too."
Harry laughed. "You're as bad as Griphook. Nice going." The evil smile Harry got back reminded him to never get on the bad side of any Elf or Goblin.
The next morning Harry woke to Hedwig fluttering her wings near his head. He had sent her out last night with a letter to Lord Greengrass so maybe this was his reply.
"Thank you" Harry croaked realizing he was parched and quickly drank from the water glass beside his bed. "Thank you Hedwig. Any problems finding him?" Hedwig gave Harry a look that told him that was a stupid question. "PREK" emphasized the look.
"Sorry. You are the most amazing owl anyone could ever want. I should know you will always deliver." That seemed to placate his owl. Either that or the plate of bacon Dobby had in his hand when he arrived beside her. She allowed Harry to take the letter from her leg and hopped onto Dobbys shoulder and started eating the bacon as Dobby fed her.
"We have an audience with Lord Greengrass at 9:00 this morning. Dobby will you be able to get us to his manor?" Harry held the parchment out so Dobby could read it. Touching the parchment Dobby nodded.
"Dobby can. Parchment bes telling Dobby where to pop you."
Harry nodded. Harry had a couple of hours to kill so he read his family Grimoire. Hoping to fill in the blanks on what he had learned. He felt that he could be doing better but he wasn't sure how. He was so deeply engrossed in the book that he didn't hear Dobby working around the room. Dobby finally interrupted Harry so he could dress for their meeting. Opening the wardrobe Harry was amazed to find all new clothes. The old rags he had been wearing were gone and replaced with custom tailored suits and top of the line everyday clothes.
"Master Harry need look like lord Potter. Yous wear suit today." Dobby said. Harry smiled. He had intended on wearing his Hogwarts robes but this would be so much better. Harry picked a light grey three piece suit with a white shirt and thin darker grey tie. Dobby helped Harry learn how to tie the tie properly. Dobby added a gold tie bar and he was ready. Harry looked in the mirror of the wardrobe and was amazed at the person in the mirror. Nodding to himself he reached out and Dobby took his hand and they vanished from Privet Drive.
