Chapter 1: The Smallpox Legacy
Brawlers: Nita, Leon, and Bo
Scene 1: The Tribe Before the Storm
The dense forests of Massachusetts whispered with life as sunlight streamed through the canopy. Children's laughter mingled with the soft rustle of leaves, and the distant hum of a river echoed through the trees.
Nita crouched beside her pet bear, Bruce, scratching behind his ears. The young girl wore her favorite necklace—a leather string adorned with a carved bear tooth—proudly symbolizing her bond with nature. Nearby, Leon, her mischievous older brother, crouched with a sly grin, hiding behind a bush, ready to pounce on Nita.
"Leon, don't you dare!" Nita warned, narrowing her eyes at her brother's shadow.
Before Leon could leap, a strong voice broke the calm. "Nita, Leon, behave."
Bo, the tribe's quiet yet respected hunter, emerged from the trees, bow slung across his back. His sharp eyes scanned the forest like they always did, alert for any sign of danger.
"Sorry, Bo," Leon muttered, stepping out sheepishly.
Bo knelt beside Nita and gently patted Bruce's thick fur. "Stay close to the camp. Something doesn't feel right today."
The air had changed. It was subtle, but Bo had learned to trust his instincts—an unease that gnawed at the edges of the peace.
Scene 2: The Illness Arrives
Days passed. The warmth of the sun grew colder, and whispers spread through the tribe like wildfire. A sickness had entered their lands, invisible yet ruthless.
Nita held Bruce tightly as she sat by their mother, who lay trembling in their family's tent. Sweat soaked her mother's brow, and her breaths came in shallow gasps. Nita didn't understand what was happening, but the fear in Bo's expression was enough to silence her questions.
"Leon," Bo said softly, kneeling beside him. "You must protect your sister. The sickness spreads fast."
Leon's face paled. "Where did it come from?"
Bo shook his head. "Strangers." He spoke the word like a curse. "Men with pale faces arrived weeks ago. With them came death."
Outside, cries and coughs echoed from every corner of the camp. People—warriors, elders, children—fell one by one as if the forest itself were wilting.
Scene 3: The Last Night
The tribe's fires had burned out. Smoke clung to the air, and silence reigned where laughter once lived. Nita and Leon sat together under a tree, Bruce curled beside them.
"Will we die too?" Nita whispered, her voice trembling.
Leon pulled his sister close, draping his cloak over her shoulders. "No. I won't let anything happen to us."
Bo approached, his face gaunt and weary. "The spirits are calling us home," he said softly. "But we'll go together."
That night, they stayed under the stars, the three of them—Nita, Leon, and Bo—holding onto each other as the cold crept closer. Nita fell asleep to the rhythm of Bruce's steady breathing.
When morning came, the forest was silent.
Scene 4: Arrival in Starr Park
Nita awoke with a start, clutching her bear tooth necklace. She blinked, disoriented, as bright lights and strange sounds surrounded her.
"Leon?" she called, her voice echoing.
"Nita!"
Leon stumbled toward her, looking just as confused. His familiar green cloak billowed as he ran, but something about him felt… different.
Bo stood nearby, his bow already drawn. "Stay close."
Around them stretched a strange, colorful world—a carnival of bright lights and bizarre machinery. The forest was gone, replaced by something unnatural.
Nita froze when she saw Bruce. Her bear, alive but different, shimmered as though made of energy. "Bruce?"
The bear let out a growl of recognition.
Leon clenched his fists. "What is this place?"
Bo looked up, his sharp gaze narrowing. "Purgatory," he whispered.
Before any of them could process it the tune starts: Starr park! Starr park! The place you never want to leave!
Nita clung to Bruce, Leon's expression darkened, and Bo gripped his bow tightly. Whatever this place was, it wasn't home.
And they were no longer alive.
Epilogue: Coping Mechanisms
In Starr Park, Nita and Leon discovered their powers—Nita's bond with Bruce becoming a tangible force and Leon's ability to disappear into shadows, a reflection of his playful yet protective spirit. Bo's skills as a hunter made him a leader, watching over them as he always had.
But deep down, they carried the weight of their tribe's loss, their final moments etched into their souls. In Starr Park, they fought—not for survival, but to quiet the grief that followed them into this strange purgatory.
