Afterwards, when that final race in Marion and Clark's careers was over, as well as Christmas and their pups' birthdays, it was looking like as if the life for the family had returned to normal. Well, there were some things that stirred the monotony of everyday activities and one of them was that Beringo was still training Amak to be "like the wind".

"Nice job, you guys and especially you, Amak! That was a great run you've done today!" Ridge, who'd been watching his brothers in a distance racing from the town to the old boat and back, could notice what kind of progress Amak had done in the last few months and this was the outcome. Amak answered: "Thank Beringo for taking care of that!"

Beringo didn't feel like he needed that amount of recognition, being humble as ever. Ridge suggested them: "Say, we should head back to Bethel's. You know her, always enjoying our company and of course, Paxon's." The brothers chuckled amusingly, albeit Beringo's was not really that energetic and he had a reason why it was like that.

Heading to the house that was just near the telegraph office, the three brothers could not mistake their destination when they spotted Bethel on the porch of her house, accompanied by Paxon. She was giggling at something he'd just said and it sounded like some kind of joke. Paxon was to break it down: "Hey, look! Your brothers are here!"

"What? Oh, hey you three!" Bethel turned her head and noticing two han huskies and one gray, she beckoned them to come over, knowing that they were always welcome. Bethel was greeted: "Hi, Bethel. What's up? How's at your end, Paxon?" Of course, it would have been rude to omit him now that he was here and he answered them: "Eh, like any other day. You can say pretty good, but nothing special."

So far so good, as if the changes were not really necessary at this point. Though, Amak said: "You know, I don't want to brag about stuff, but Bethel… and you too, Paxon, should have been there on the beach earlier! Beringo was training me as usual and would you believe that I'd beaten him this time around!?"

"No kidding?!" Paxon asked this in surprise, as if Amak's success was meaning something to him, knowing that Bethel wasn't going to let anyone make her brother feel like a sore loser. While both of them were congratulating him, Ridge and Beringo sat aside, with the latter waiting for Bethel to look at him, as if he had to tell her something.

Of course, Bethel noticed that look in Beringo's eyes when she moved closer to him, as if he were saying: "We need to talk in private." Ridge of course, moved to Amak and Paxon, thus letting the eldest and the youngest sibling to talk, starting with: "Bethel, I may not be really proud on how Amak managed to beat me this time. Don't get me wrong, I'm proud at him for being successful today, but maybe I might have overly encouraged it."

"What do you mean by that?" Bethel asked him, not quite understanding what he was saying in here. Looking at them cheering and smiling, Beringo revealed what it was: "Well, Amak was for the last few days each time at the equal position with increased speed, but this time I decided to slow down only a tiny bit… so it could look like as if he'd become faster."

Bethel looked at him with the raised eyebrow, then she figured out what he was saying and so she'd told him: "Well, maybe that was not the best way to handle it, Beringo… but do not be ashamed of yourself. In the end, it does not matter who is faster, what matters is that you've encouraged him to pursue his goals and look where he is at!"

A shame like that was to be replaced with the pride as this day meant a lot for a young dog like Amak. Though, once again, he had lowered his ears when he admitted to her: "And look, I really didn't want to come over here. And I am the reason why." Bethel and even Ridge, who had heard him, came closer and asked: "What's going on?"

Looking at his youngest brother, Beringo sighed with the air steaming from his muzzle and had told him this: "Ridge, I really wish now that Amak was the one to go here with you. I just cannot bear how I see you three having someone. Yo,u Bethel, have Paxon, you, Ridge, have Galena and Amak has Lily. And who do I have? No one."

Ridge and Bethel glanced at one another, knowing that with all the contribution their eldest brother had done, it seemed like it was now his turn to receive what he deserved, with Ridge telling him: "Beringo, what's the rush? You, like us, are still young and the life is still ahead of you! Maybe one day your destiny will find the female you like, just like Galena and me!"

Giving him those smiles made him reconsider his initial thought of rushing in his life, so he had smiled back to them. Even Bethel asked him: "Well, what about your friends from your team? Dakota and Hallie, if I am right?" He nodded to her just so it could be clear that she knew their names, but his answer was…

"Scratch both choices. I think that with all due honesty, that even if Dakota was my first friend, I think she has more likes for Indiana than me. Besides, Hallie seems like she's more into Justin." There he'd explained the reasons why neither of them were going to work with him, but in the end, he simply told them: "All in all, you guys are right! I won't rush in my life to find a female for myself. I'll listen to my heart and find the one I truly care for!"

"That's the spirit!" Ridge happily accepted his brother's new perspective of his life choices. Paxon and Amak, who'd been talking behind, the former asked: "What's going on, you three? Are we missing something important?" Beringo answered: "Not really much, just some life choices I've made." With all due honesty, Paxon decided not to bother him without any pointless questions.

As February was coming to the end and this was a leap year, on February 29th, Beringo and his friends were at home, waiting for Nash to come and let them know about if they were going to get their green light to deliver mail in the name of US mail service or not? This was pretty much saying how they were eagerly awaiting the approval!

"Guys, guys! I see the master coming from the distance!" Roger, who was in charge to scout outside the window whenever Nash was out there, just to make sure that there were no troubles about him suddenly coming and seeing the mess. The dogs formed a line in the hall as they heard Nash's boots stomping on the porch.

As soon as the doors opened, Nash was holding a piece of paper in his one hand whereas his other hand was holding the doorknob. It was not a newspaper in his hand nor a letter from his family or friends. It was some kind of contract or a certificate, with Nash revealing: "Good news, everyone! We have been finally approved to officially deliver the mail for US sled service starting from tomorrow!"

Tomorrow?! After weeks of waiting for that approval to come, ever since Marion and Clark's retirement, the dogs all barked and howled in joy and didn't miss their chance to pounce their master and lick him in joy, despite his protests: "Easy does it! Take it easy, will you?! Ohhhh, come on!" The joy was never ending for the dogs.

A brief glance in Beringo's eyes was seen as the paper had fallen on the floor and there he could see what "P." in "P. Nash" initials was standing for - Peter. Still, Nash was going to be "the master" for him and his teammates, who were busy licking him, mainly Roger and Dakota, while he was still trying to tell them to back off already!

"Guys, I'll be back soon! I gotta tell my family about this!" Beringo let them know as the doors were open and to tell his family that from tomorrow on he was going to be on duty was going to be outstanding! So far on this leap day of the year things were going great! Rushing to his parents' house, little did he expect that the things were about to go south…

Making his path to Gundarsson's, there he noticed something happening. The furniture and the items from Gundarsson's house were outside, on the porch or on the streets, wrapped up in plastic, paper and such. Confused by that sight, Beringo spotted his mother over there, alongside his father and siblings. What was going on?

Heading straight to them, Beringo had called them from the distance: "Mom? Dad? Guys? Bethel? What's going on in here?!" They had turned their looks at Beringo and their faces were not shining with happiness or hope. He then asked them: "Why is the old master moving the furniture from the house? Is he getting new ones?"

If only he were to get the new furniture, as Gundarsson told him: "Viktor! Make sure that your room is clean and empty by tomorrow! By the noon, we should be moving!" And of course, Viktor's voice was heard: "Yes, pappa!" To this, Ridge had told him: "Beringo, we have some bad news for you."

"Oh no, what is it?" Beringo asked them, fearing that something bad and if not, a tragic incident? It wasn't the latter, thankfully, but the revelation was not soothing with Clark's voice: "Son, today and tomorrow morning will be the last day we'll be seeing each other…" Did he hear that right?! He was going to see them for the last time in the next 24 hours?!

"W… wait… what?! Don't tell me that I'm moving out of Nome! My master would have told me! And besides, I have been only four months in here!" Beringo forgot on his big news as his denial and sorrow overtook him, fearing that he would be apart from his family again. Well, Amak had answered him: "Beringo! Beringo, take it easy! It is not you who is moving out of Nome… it is us!"

That silenced him, but it didn't heal his sorrows when he, in confusion, spoke: "Huh? How? What? What do you mean by "us"?" And since the eldest ones knew the best, Marion took over here: "It means that me, your father, your siblings and their friends will be moving out from Nome, sweetheart." She wanted to end this hard line with a motherly feel.

Beringo could not believe it… the revelation that his family was moving out of Nome did not bode well with him and as he was going to ask what was the occasion, Clark told him: "Son, remember that our master, before becoming a musher, was a gold washer. For years there had been no gold for him to wash over here, but the recent foundations of gold in the town of Tanana had opened him a new page to return to his former job, since he had retired from sled service! And of course, the masters of ours have accepted the offer to join him."

None sat well well with him, knowing that now his family were going to leave away from him was making him feel… desolate. As much as he wanted to scream in despair and tell them not to go, he couldn't do anything about it. He was looking down in the snowy ground and told them: "Well… I was going to tell you that as of tomorrow, I was going to begin my first time job as a sled dog…"

"Really?! Congratulations, Beringo!" Bethel heard him say that and she was pretty excited for him, giving him a well deserved deep nuzzle by his neck. Still, he was not feeling well about these news but like any other mother, Marion asked him: "Beringo, when are you going to deliver your mail tomorrow? If I'm correct, it has to be in the morning."

Since he had no idea about it as he rushed outside before hearing when to go, he knew that she had a point. To which he responded: "Yes, I think we'll begin in the morning, but when are you leaving?" One dog looked at another and the answer came from his father: "By the noon we should depart for Tanana. This will give us enough time!"

If that were the case, then Beringo knew that there was no time to waste but to tell them: "How is this about? Before I set off on a mail delivery tomorrow, will I see you one last time tomorrow morning? You know… if anything, I hope that if you're leaving Nome, that I get to give you all some proper goodbyes rather the revelation that I'd never see you again without bidding farewell…"

This was pretty hard for him to say it and more he was saying, more hesitant he was to finish it. Amak told him: "Brother, I think that we'll have enough time to see one another tomorrow! All you have to do is come to this place before your mail delivery… for which we are wishing you good luck!" The good luck wishes from his family made Beringo feel a bit, only a little bit, relieved, even if tomorrow was going to be anything than that…

The next morning, on the first day of March in 1920, Beringo and his team were ready to leave at ten with their very first mail delivery in their careers in front of the post office. While the team was excited to make their first official mail delivery, Beringo was still feeling gloomy from his yesterday's revelation.

"Beringo, what's the matter? Cheer up! We'll be doing our mail delivery soon!" Indiana excitedly invited him to celebrate together with his teammates, but Beringo remained down, answering: "No thanks, Indiana… You guys go to the post office and I'll meet you there by the time we set off, okay?"

This gloomy feeling from Beringo dispersed the excitement and joy among his teammates as they watched their lead dog head towards his mother's house. Dakota leaned to Indiana's ear to whisper: "What has gotten in him? He was pretty excited yesterday!" To which Indiana whispered to him: "I have no idea, Dakota. I hope something terrible didn't happen."

Indeed nothing terrible had happened. It was just that closer he was moving to his birth house, heavier the burden he felt on his shoulders. Gazing at that house, from which most of the items and the furniture that could be taken, light one, was already outside. There he saw some other humans, the owners of his siblings and the owners of their friends.

"Beringo! Hey!" Ridge called him when they had seen their eldest sibling coming, to which he gracefully came to them, albeit anything than grace was in his head. He greeted them without any enthusiasm: "Hey, you all… I can't believe that today is the last day we'll be seeing each other." None of the dogs around felt comfortable about that idea.

Clark stepped in: "Son, I know it is hard for you that we are all leaving. We have no other choice but to obey our masters, because that's the dog life." He was right about it. It was either live under someone's care of be all on yourself and suffer something terrible lurking out there. Beringo complained: "I know… it's just that we've been all together for just four months, not even a year! It just feels so unfair!"

Marion walked to her son and sensing he might let the tears come out of him, she let him press his head against her chest and she whispered in his ear: "Beringo, darling, I know how hard it is for you that we'll be living far away from one another. Just like when your father and I were young, we had not seen our parents ever since then!"

Now he could imagine what was that like. His complaining had to be extinguished with a reasonable moment like that. Amak came close to his brother and told him: "Beringo, I don't know if we will see each other again, but I hope we will once in the future. After everything you've done for me, and others too, I really hope this is not the last of us you've seen!"

This meant a lot from his younger brother and the words from Bethel soothed his pain a bit: "If there is anything you should not forget about us, Beringo, is that you take a lot after dad, but deep inside you take from mom. The others who come across you will be reminded on mom and dad… it's like they're there for you!"

Anytime he heard Bethel saying something like that, Beringo knew that her words cured his sorrows. He got to nuzzle her for that and then whispered in her ear: "Bethel, among you and our brothers, you were the one I feel the closest to and you were there for me in those life moments for the last few months. I love you, my sister."

"I love you too." Bethel was touched by her brother's words when the two had nuzzled one another for the last time. Amak and Ridge got their round when he told them: "I love you too, my brothers. You may be after mom, but each of you two are special by something and it was my honor to help you become who you are now."

"Beringo, you don't have to, honestly… well, fine." Ridge didn't know what to say actually, but hearing that from his brother, he knew that he could not reject the words he'd just told him. He nuzzled both of his brothers, for which Amak said in Ridge's name: "We love you too, brother. At least we get to have proper farewell this time."

He was right about this and now that he looked at Lily, Galena and Paxon, who were standing by their owners, loaded with their bags, he told them each: "Lily, Galena, Paxon… I may not have met you properly, but I know you well enough right here. Will you make sure that my brothers and Bethel are always safe with you all over there in Tanana?"

"You may count on it!" Lily assured him that her and Amak were going to have a bright future together. Galena told him: "Well… I'll give my best not to let you down, Beringo." She was a bit insecure about this, which was one of her traits. Paxon was confident, alright, when he told him: "Bethel will be safe with me. I'll make sure of that!"

Thus Beringo bid the last farewell to every one them, before turning to Clark and Marion and like any son, he spoke to his father: "Dad, I wish you luck out there in the town of Tenana. I take after you now by looks and with leadership skills. I love you and thank you for providing me these traits!" Thus he leaned on his father's chest to nuzzle him, who returned that favor by nuzzling him by his head with his chin.

"I love you too, my son. I wish you fortune for your new career, Beringo!" Clark replied to his son before they parted and best for the last, he gazed at his mother, whom he nuzzled deeply and the longest, telling her: "Mom, thank you for being with me, even not physically, in my darkest times. I love you and I'll never forget you or anyone else!"

Marion nuzzled him for the last time before their last meeting was over, saying: "I love you, Beringo, my sweetheart. We may be living far away soon, but you have your friends who are like your family. Take good care of them as the sled leader and never let them down, no matter what!" The words of the respectful leader like Marion were poured in Beringo's ears.

Thus he parted from his mother and noticing how Gundarsson, his wife and little Viktor had already their items packed up and ready to go, it was now on Beringo to join their teammates, but not before he heard from his mother: "Beringo, one last thing you should know in your life: This is our farewell, but that does not make it eternal!"

Farewells were not eternal? The words of wisdom from his mother were very likely to remain in his head now that he was about to turn around the corner and have one last look at them. He replied with the nod and then he turned his head away, slowly towards the street around the corner, and was now ready to move to the post office where his team was.

Walking to the post office with his head and ears down, there he could sense the presence of his teammates as the simple glance with his blue eyes towards them confirmed his guess. Hallie called him over: "Beringo, there you are! Come on, the mail delivery is about to begin!" She didn't notice his feelings at the moment when he was looking at her.

His head bowed down, he had made it to the harness he had to place around his neck and Dakota was the one who noticed something was not right so she asked him: "Beringo, are you alright? What's the matter?" Showing her concern for the lead dog, Beringo looked at her and answered: "Well… if you want to know, I just bid a farewell to my family."

"But why does that make you feel like you're down?" Justin asked from behind, as he did not know that Beringo's goodbye to his family didn't mean it was until they were to return to Nome. He answered: "Justin, it is not that we'll be out of town for hours, but when we return, my family, their friends and owners will have moved out of Nome to Tanana."

Now this was getting more and more clear to them and Indiana, not wanting to have his friend feel down, asked: "Chief, I'm sorry that you're parting from them again." For the first time ever since he had been called "Chief", Beringo showed that he no longer cared whether they were going to call him by his real name or not.

"Is there we can do something for you, friend?" Roger asked him, as he was positioned in the harness behind Indiana. With Beringo strapping his around his neck and waiting for Nash to come, bring the mail and attach them further, Beringo decided to end the gloom: "There is something my mom told me now that I'm parting away from them."

The dogs gathered closer to him as they were not going to let any words slip out of their ears while listening to Beringo. He had looked at each one of them and let them know: "My friends, we have been raised away from our families, even if I was the one and only who got the chance to be with them until today, whereas none of you had that chance. But there is something you should all know."

The first part kinda made them feel uneasy, which could have been seen in their eyes that they had been longing to see their families in the future. The second part, however, was encouraging: "We have each other. We may not be blood related to other, but we've grown together and learned the values of friendship and respect! Together, each one of us, we are a family deep inside!"

This was really moving for them, feeling that as long as they had one another and treated each other as a family, whether that would mean if they were going to get along or not. Hallie answered: "Nice call, Beringo! We each may have some disputes with another, but you made us feel like a family who has to stay strong together!"

Beringo liked that compliment coming from her and with the blood streaming strong in his veins, he had that feel coming… the howl he let out of himself in the middle of Nome, followed by the howls of his teammates, much to people's confusion. It was broken though, when Nash was seen leaving the post office with the mail bag, asking: "What's the matter? Already excited for your very first mail delivery?"

The dogs barked in joy as they were looking at their master, their musher, placing a bag on the sled and checking the safety of each one of them and strapping them by the sled before he had headed towards the sled. Indiana looked at Beringo once more and Beringo gazed at his friend, for which both of them shared that mutual respect. Indiana spoke: "Make your family proud, Beringo. Make them and all of us proud!"

He nodded to his vice leader when Nash's voice from behind boomed: "MUSH!" For the first time in their lives, Beringo, Indiana, Dakota, Roger, Justin and Hallie had obeyed their master's command to make their path to the town of Golovin. Little did they know that later this year, their mail deliveries were going to be half as shorter due to a new town being established halfway from Nome to Golovin - White Mountain.

Mushing eastwards and leaving the town of Nome behind, Beringo imagined that later in the afternoon, after delivering the mail to Nome, he'd be passing in front of his parents' house and there would be a sign on the porch looming, with the letters written: "FOR SALE". The house would be lingering empty for until the next person were to buy it.

It was all ahead of him how he was not going to see his parents, siblings and their friends from this day on, but he was not going to succumb to his grief and anxiety. He had his friends as his new family, whom he was going to take care, in good and bad. Someday, someone he was having feelings for, were going to come one day, and that'd be another step in his young life, as he thought while mushing through the snow and dirt.

THE END OF SEASON ONE
