Author's Note: Happy New Year! Thank you for the follows, likes, reviews. So nice to see Cangel is always alive with us. :)
Angel braced himself. He hadn't been to The Horseman in about 30 years, since before Buffy came to Sunnydale. Although, in his current body, he'd guess it was about 4 years. A well-known demon hangout, The Horseman was deep below ground. Hidden behind what appeared to be a normal sewer entrance, passage could only be provided if you knew which bricks to press. The place had protective magic, ensuring no violence would ensue between demons. They came from all over, including demons specializing in certain magic and spells. If he was seeking information, this was the place to go. He pressed the bricks in the order he remembered and stepped back as the entrance opened.
As he stepped inside, he caught sight of Barter and rolled his eyes. "Angel!" exclaimed Barter. "Long time no see, man!" Barter walked towards him and patted him on the back. He paused. "Wait...Angelus?" he asked. Angel stared at him. God, Barter had always been annoying, and he saw nothing had changed. "No, it's Angel." he said, taking in his surroundings. The entrance aside, The Horseman could be described as casual chic. The various rooms were large, with a bar in each spaceand activities that included pool, darts, and poker that probably had lives on the line. Loud chatter continued and drinks flowed as the demons glanced at who had entered.
"Hey! Look what the cat dragged in!" the bartender, Duat, yelled across the room. Taking that as his cue, Angel slid away from Barter, taking a seat at the bar.
Duat smiled at him, yellow teeth that looked like sharp pencils on display. "Same as before? A Lizzie Borden?" Angel nodded. "Yeah, sure, thanks." Duat glanced at him as he made his drink. "Been a while since you've been here. Where you been?"
"Oh, just been busy." he said. He looked around and kept his ears attuned to the chit chat around him. He knew of a few species of demons that specialized in time specifically, and everyone knew time was not meant to be tampered with. With any luck, he wouldn't leave here empty handed. He thought of Cordelia, of Caleb, of Connor. Of L.A. It was an odd and surreal feeling, watching everyone around him, knowing what was to come to Sunnydale as a whole. He also observed that demons were engaging with each other. There were no phones in sight. It was actually kind of nice. He knew Cordelia was having a hard time adjusting to not having a smartphone. He himself had spent hundreds of years without one so, for him, it wasn't as big of a deal. Maybe The Horseman would survive what was coming. He never did go back.
Duat placed the glass in front of him. "Really? Cuz there's been talk of you getting all cozy with the Slayer." Angel took a long sip of his drink as he thought about the best response. Memories of that time danced in his head, like film across a projector. He set his glass down. "Why don't you send the talkers my way next time, huh?"
Duat nodded knowingly as he began to tend to other customers. Angel's (and maybe Angelus') reputation tended to bring a sense of him not being one to fuck with, whether he was in a rut or not. He raised his glass. "I'll take this to go, thanks." He got up and walked around several rooms, drinking and scanning the crowd.
His attention landed on a group of demons sitting around a table towards the back. They wore black robes and were speaking in hushed yet urgent tones. He couldn't make out their faces. He observed those around the table, those better able to listen to the conversation they were having. He got a bit closer as the discussion between two of them began to get heated, their voices raising. Suddenly, one stood up and yelled "You idiot!" As he moved to put his hands on the other, he was thrown back, the protective anti-violence magic surrounding The Horseman doing its work.
Attention reared on them and, swiftly, the group were escorted out among a crowd of "boo"'s and "get outta here"s".
Angel put his glass down and followed discreetly. A few minutes later, heslammed one of the demons closest to the argument against the sewer wall. The rest of the demons had entered a portal, but Angel had managed to grab one of their groupies just before it closed. He bared his fangs. "Tell me what you know."
Behind him, Angel heard a voice say "Hello, mate."
Cordelia glanced inside the library. She didn't see anybody. She quietly opened the door. "Hello?" she said. "Giles?" No answer. Releasing a sigh of relief, she quickly made her way to the computers and sat down. She took a couple of seconds to process. God, seeing Xander was the ultimate blast from the past. She hoped her internal WTF hadn't turned her attention to the computer and just about died over how gigantic the monitor was. Was it always this huge? God, could 1998 be any more ancient? Remembering how to turn it on, she did so and waited for what felt like forever for the monitor to come to life. She took a quick look around her to double check she was alone. She huffed in frustration as she clicked the mouse and painstakingly waited for the web page of the library database to load. "This is not okay." she muttered to herself. She thought of Angel and hoped he was getting somewhere because, at this rate, she would take literally forever.
She typed "time travel" in the database and tapped her fingers impatiently as the results loaded. She quickly grabbed a pen and paper from nearby and wrote down the section. Her palms sweaty, she perused the aisles until she was where she needed to be. Tilting her head to read the various titles, her eyes landed on one. She reached for it.
"Cordelia?" said a voice from directly behind her.
"Gah!" Cordelia turned and grabbed her chest, the book falling from her hands. "Giles!" she exclaimed. She released a breath. Giles just stared at her. "You shouldn't sneak up on people like that! You scared me." she said as Giles bent down to retrieve the book.
"Time Unlocked." he read aloud. He paused. "I...didn't take you as someone who would be so interested in...time." he finished awkwardly.
Cordelia grabbed the book. "Oh, just doing some light reading for...a class." She didn't get a chance to see the rest, but she knew she needed to get out of there right now. Angel's voice rang in her head. "We act normal". "Can I check this out?" she asked.
Giles shook his head, as if dazed, and nodded. "Of course." She followed him to the main desk. Great, she thought. Can't wait to for this to take a year.
She tapped her feet as Giles went about turning on the computer. "Sorry." he muttered. "Didn't get a chance to turn it on." he smiled at her fakely, and she smiled fakely in return. Giles tapped his fingers. She noticed them flex, like he didn't know what to do with them. He huffed and tapped his feet impatiently. He blew out a breath. His eyes roamed the 's eyes narrowed. After years of not only Angel Investigations, but being a private investigator, she was skilled at knowing when something was off with somebody. And Giles was off.
The door to the library opened. She and Giles turned to see Buffy, Xander, and Willow walking in. Stunned, Cordelia smoothed her expression as quickly as she could. Buffy was suddenly about sixteen years old again. Her hair was in a bun, with whisps of hair covering her face. She wore a white skirt and blue top. To her left, Willow's long red hair was pulled in a ponytail. She wore overalls. Overalls were making a comeback Cordelia thought.
"Hi." said Buffy and Willow at the same time.
"Buffy." said Giles. Cordelia didn't know what to do so she settled on a weird wave. The room fell into an awkward silence. Giles slammed the monitor out of nowhere, startling them. "Why is this so slow?" he whispered in frustration.
Xander chuckled. "The 90's called, they want their computers...back..." he finished lamely, his eyes wide as he realized how that sounded. Buffy slapped his shoulder and the two of them seemed to have a private conversation with their minds. Willow glanced between them and Cordelia and Giles, nervously biting her fingers.
Cordelia's wheels were turning in her mind. That comment, Giles' frustration with the computers, his look of disbelief upon seeing her. What if she and Angel weren't the only ones? She needed to test the waters without making it obvious.
Shrugging nonchalantly, she cleared her throat and continued with Xander's joke. "Hah, I know right? It's not like we have Iphones.." she looked around quickly at the surprised expressions of Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles.
"Oh my God!" she exclaimed.
Thirty minutes later, after an eye-opening conversation, Cordelia, Xander, Giles, Buffy and Willow sat at the table. They said nothing as the situation they were in was realized. They too had been in the year 2024 and had woken up in their teenage bodies, their present-day memories reminded Cordelia of the end scene of The Avengers, when they were all sitting at the table at the shawarma place.
Cordelia leaned forward. "So, is it just us? Is anybody else acting weird?"
"I have no idea. We havn't really interacted with anyone else." said Buffy. "Let's just hope Spike and Angel get some information." She paused. "What if they run into each other?" Cordelia laughed. "Oh, to be a fly on that wall as they both pretend to be themselves from 26 years ago."
Buffy smirked.
Giles took off his glasses and chewed on an end. "In any case, it's important that we act as normal as possible. Time is not to be tamperedwith. Any action we take can have disastrous effects on our very futures." He glanced around as his words took effect. "We must be careful."
"I don't understand." said Willow. "Usually, spells about time that are cast by someone else don't have the travelers keep their memories. Why do we still have our memories?"
"Because the demon who cast it made a mistake." They all turned towards Angel's voice as he and Spike entered the library. Buffy and Cordelia stood. Cordelia ran into Angel's arms. "How did you get in here? It's daylight out."
"The sewers." said Spike. He pushed a nearby table in front of the library door. "Probably not the best place to have this chit chat, pets." He strode over to Buffy and placed a kiss on her lips. "Glad to see you've all figured it out. Took Angel and I about 5 minutes. He didn't buy my evil 1998 Spike one bit." he feigned hurt.
Abruptly, the door on the other side of the room opened. Giles' eyes widened as Jenny walked in to the scene of the seven of them staring at her, including the person who would end up killing her.
"Well, this just got awkward." said Xander.
