A/N: This chapter is gonna go back in time to show what happened in England during Jonathan's trip.
May 9th:
I was a rather peaceful morning in London. The sun was rising, casting a soft glow upon the brick streets, and the birds chirped.
Mina woke up and got out of bed, stretching a bit before getting dressed in her day clothes. Then, she heard the sound of something cooking in the kitchen.
She left her bedroom and entered the kitchen, where she saw Ada cooking an omelette on the stove. "Ada! What are you doing here?!" Mina asked.
"You gave me an extra house key, remember?" Ada said as she held up the key. "I figured I'd cook breakfast for you and ship in around the house until we head to Whitby together." Ada said.
"Oh... that's actually pretty nice. I haven't had breakfast cooked for me in a long time." Mina said. "Well you're welcome." Ada said with a smirk. Mina just rolled her eyes and playfully hit Ada in the back with her elbow.
"So, when are we leaving?" Ada asked. "May 19th. We got ten days. You sure you wanna cook for me for ten days?" Mina asked in a somewhat smug tone. "I mean... it would be nice to get breakfast cooked for me every now and again." Ada responded.
"I think I can manage." Mina said. Then, Mina noticed a cup of coffee set out of her. "Awww... you made me coffee?" Mina asked. "I've seen you when you don't have your morning coffee. Why wouldn't I?" Ada asked playfully before setting the omelette on a plate and giving the plate to Mina.
Ada then went on to make her own omelette. Eventually, she finished making her omelette and she sat down to eat with Mina. "So... if you're not romantically interested in Jonathan, is there anyone you wish you could be with?" Ada asked.
Mina paused for a second, a thoughtful look in her eyes. "I don't know. I mean... when Jonathan dies of old age and I'm left his inheritance, I'll be too old to found a woman to settle down with." Mina said.
Ada let out a shocked gasp before standing up. "Oh my lord! I knew it!" Ada exclaimed. "Knew what exactly?" Mina asked, slightly confused. "You like women." Ada said.
A look of both realization and embarrassment crossed Mina's face as she avoided eye-contact. "Oh... I really let that slip?" Mina asked. "Yep." Ada said. Then, Ada noticed the embarrassed look on Mina's face.
"Hey, if it helps, I won't tell anyone. Wanna hear a secret?" Ada asked. "...Yeah, sure." Mina responded. "I'm the same way."
A shocked look crossed Mina's face as she looked at Mina. "You're into women too?" Mina asked. "I mean... yeah. Did you ever take me as the conforming type?" Ada asked.
"Well... you do color you hair with paint from a bucket." Mina said, looking at Ada's hair. Ada had messy, long, damaged hair that was a purple color with multiple spots where the paint faded and showed brown hair.
"I still stand by this practice." Ada said. "Really?" Mina asked. "Yeah, normal colored hair is boring." Ada said. "That's what you think." Mina said. "Whatever." Ada said.
Later that day: Mina was sitting at her desk, typing away at her typewriter. "Dear Lucy, I was planning to visit while Jonathan was gone, but I have decided to visit once he has returned, which will be a week from now. He sent me a letter saying that he misses me already. I hope you're doing well." she typed before taking the paper, folding it, and putting it in an envelope.
She entered the living area of the house and handed the letter to Ada. "Could you take this to the post office for me?" Mina asked. "Of course I can!" Ada said, quickly standing up and taking the letter before rushing out the door.
One of the things Mina loved about Ada was her constant willingness to help with even the most simple things. Mina sat down and looked at the coffee table, which had Tarot cards laid out.
She had never gotten a Tarot reading from Ada before. She had grown rather use to Ada's belief in superstitions, even if she didn't believe them herself, just getting a Tarot reading from Ada would be fun.
In fact, spending more time with Ada would be fun. Meanwhile, Ada walked through the city, making her way towards the post office. As Ada walked, she thought about how Mina pushed back the trip so Jonathan could tag along, which disappointed her. She wanted to spend time with Mina alone while in Whitby, maybe even admire the beautiful sea shore together, but now they were gonna have a third wheel.
May 17th:
Mina paced back and forth in the living area. Jonathan was supposed to return the day before, but he wasn't home. She never even received a letter notifying her of his return. "Where is he?!" she asked in a frustrated tone.
"Relax, Mina. He might have to stay a little longer to get things in order. I'm sure clients can be tricky sometimes. We can always visit Whitby without him." Ada said while sitting in a chair, and sipping on a glass of wine.
Then, Mina heard the doorbell ring. She opened the door and was handed a letter by the mailman. She closed the door before looking at the letter. "It's from Lucy." she said before opening the letter up and reading it.
"Dear Mina, thank you for writing. I would like to clarify that I do not have three suitors, but their are three men who seem to like me. One is Quincy Morris, who is fairly unremarkable, the second is Dr. John Seward, and the third is Arthur Holmwood. I will confess that I do have feelings for Holmwood, but no one has tried to approach me for my hand in marriage." Mina read.
"She's still beautiful enough to have three guys who like her." Ada said. "That's besides the point, Ada." Mina said before throwing the letter aside. "We'll wait a few more days before making the trip, but I guess we can get packed." Mina said.
"Alright, I'll go pack my things." Ada said before leaving to pack her luggage back at her house. "Jonathan, I hope you're alright." Mina said to herself. Jonathan may have not been her love interest, but he was her best friend.
May 24th:
Mina was sitting in the living area with Ada. Ada was sitting on the arm of Mina's chair, nursing a glass of champagne. Mina was reading another letter from Lucy. "Dear Mina, I have an update on my current situation. The three men have both proposed to me. I rejected Morris and Seward. Morris took it rather well, but Seward hasn't talked to me since. I accepted Holmwood's proposal and we are now engaged. We plan to get married in June, and we would love if you're here to help with preparations." Mina read.
"Looks like we got a trip to make." Ada said. Mina sighed before throwing the letter aside. "I suppose there's no more time to wait for Jonathan. Are your things packed?" Mina asked. "Yeah, of course." Ada said.
"Alright, I'll secure us a stage coach for the journey." Mina said before leaving the house. Once Mina was gone, Ada quietly celebrated. She would actually get to go with Mina and Jonathan wouldn't be there!
Whitby, England:
It was a peaceful day in Whitby. Seward was at the asylum. After the rejection, he started drowning his sorrows in his work.
He was seated in a sell, listening to the crazed rambling of a 59 year old patient named Raeford Morton Renfield.
"I can h-h-hear his thoughts. He so mad at me!" Renfield said. "Who's he?" Seward asked. "My master, Count Dracula." Renfield answered. Seward didn't dignify that with a response, and he just wrote, "Patient believes he works for a count."
"Sir, if I may ask, do you remember where you came from?" Seward asked. "I've lived in Romania for the past few years, but master sent me to scope out his new real estate property." Renfield answered.
"And what might that real estate property be?" Seward asked. "I can't say any more. He'll know if I tell I tell you." Renfield said. "Very well then." Seward said before getting up and leaving the sell.
One of the other workers walked up to Seward. "What do you think?" the worker asked. "What do I think? I think he's a nutcase, but he's a fascinating nutcase." Seward said before walking away.
May 25th:
Quincy Morris showed up at Holmwood's house and knocked on his door. "Holmwood opened the door and was slightly surprised to see Morris. "Quincy, what brings you here today?" Holmwood asked.
"I'm here to suggest that we throw a galla to celebrate you engagement, and to commiserate mine and Seward's rejection." Morris said.
"Well that would be quite lovely. I'll start making plans and sending out invites." Holmwood said before closing the door.
May 26th:
The party was in full swing. Holmwood and Lucy were having a fun time, but Morris and Seward felt left out. No one really cared to show them any sympathy.
"So... how's your work going?" Morris asked. "It's going fine. One of my patients is claiming to be the servant of a Romanian Count."
"Well, they're in an insane asylum for a reason." Morris said before downing a whole glass of alcohol in one go. "You're be dead by the end of the week if you keep drinking like that." Seward said. "I'll be fine." Morris said.
A/N: And that's the end of chapter 5. Don't worry, the horror will return sooner, rather than later. Also, if there are any serious grammatical errors, or I accidentally mixed up names, please point it out to me so I can try and fix it. I fixed a couple errors in the first chapter.
