Previously I do not own Molly of Denali, or any of the characters contained within this story. Molly of Denali is the property of Kathy Waugh and Dorothea Gillim.
I look forward to the reviews and criticisms (I know there will be some). I hope you enjoy the story, and just like the cartoon on PBS Kids, I am trying to stay true to the characters as shown each and every day. I am also including real elements like they've done on the show (racism, environmental, life, and death, etc..). I hope you like this when I start to repost the chapters.
Please review all of my stories. Feedback would give me ideas I can use for not only this story but for future ones. Thank you for your time and happy reading.
My story takes place in 2021 when Molly is twelve, Tooey is twelve and Trini is nine.
The Three Musketeers / Celebrations
Finishing their breakfast, Trini helped with the dishes. She brought the plates to the sink and helped her mother to ash them. "Trini would you like to spend some time some people you haven't seen in a few days?" Joy asked drying a plate and placing it in the cupboard.
Trini smiled immediately, "Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes yeeeees." She squealed drying her hands and hugging her mother very hard. Joy patted her head but then tapped her on her back. Trini pulled away, "Are you in pain sweetie?" Joy asked alarmed.
"No, but she does need her next dose of medication. So, she wouldn't have any pain when she is with her friends." Daniel told them going over to his backpack and getting the pills ready for Trini. While he was getting the pills she poured a glass of water and waited for him to give her the pills.
Trini took the pills and downed them with the water. She placed her glass into the sink and then walked to her bedroom. "I'll take care of the chickens, and Four-Spots while you get ready okay, Trini Bear." Joy offered.
"Thanks, mom." Trini said entering her bedroom. Joy smiled and walked over to the phone. A few moments later, the phone rang a couple of times. "Hello?" She heard. "Hi, Walter, Joy here. Is Molly available?"
"No, Joy, she's at Tooey's place helping him. Layla is over there too. Give her a call there." Walter told her. "Okay, thanks Walter, I'll give her a call in a sec. Have a good day, bye." Joy added. "Bye." Walter said hanging up the phone.
She dialed again and waited for Layla to answer. "Hello," Layla answered. "Hey Layla, this is Joy, is Molly available?" Joy asked. "Yes she is. Here she is." Layla told her covering the phone and handing it to Molly.
"Hi Joy, What's up? Do you need help with the chickens, and Four-Spots? Is Trini okay?" Joy smiled as Trini's friend showed her desire to be of service. "Trini is fine, I can handle the dog and the chickens and no, I am god. I just wanted to ask you a question." Joy teased.
"What question?" Molly asked confused. "Do you want to see Trini?" She pulled the phone away from her ear when she heard Molly squealing. "That would be great. I am at Tooey's place helping him. I can't bring him over there until the rest of the walkways around Qyah are plowed. Right now, the only place plowed is the front of the businesses and the runway Mom uses for flying." Molly informed her.
"Thanks to the last few days only being windy, I think Mr. Rowley and Mr. Patak have been busy. Take a look out of the window." Joy told her. Layla and Atsaq watched Molly walk over to the window and look outside.
"Hang on a second Joy." She placed the call on hold. "Mom, Atsaq is it too cold for Tooey to be taken out in the wheelchair to go to Trini's place?" Layla and Atsaq exchanged glances. "As long as we bundle him up, it should not affect him. My main question is can you handle pushing him through the wind and some icy patches?" Atsaq asked standing up and going to the closet and pulling out a couple of think blankets.
"Atsaq, if I had to, I'd push him to Chitlak Dome and back. I'd do anything for him or Trini." Molly with a determined voice. Layla smiled hearing her talk about her boyfriend and what she would do for him.
"Atsaq, don't try her, she'd do anything for those she loves and cares for. I've seen it for myself. She's got this." Layla informed them. "Ok, let's get Tooey bundled and over to Trini's place. Resuming the call, "Joy, we'll be there is just a little bit. We don't want Trini coming out into the cold until after her staples comes out and she can do things without pain." Molly said, pushing Tooey to the stairs. "Ok, then. See you soon." Joy said hanging up the phone.
Trini walked back into the living room in her regular clothes. She saw her mother putting the phone back onto the cradle and her father was adding wood to the fire making the place nice and toasty.
"Did I miss something?" Trini asked. "You're friend are coming over here. Molly and Tooey should be here in just a bit." Joy stated walking over and patting Trini on her head. "I am so happy, I get to see my friend again. It feels like it's been forever." She said.
Daniel sidled over to Joy, "It's only been about three days." Danile said. "I know but to her three days may as well be six months." Joy corrected him. As they watched their daughter playing with Four-Spots.
"I'll get the chickens and Four-Spots taken care of before they arrive." Joy told them getting her parka and gloves from the peg. A moment later she opened the door and left to get Trini's usual chores taken care of.
* Earlier at the Ookami Residence *
Tooey paused briefly while brushing his teeth next to Molly. "Do you know what I love about our relationship?" Molly looked up with her brush in her mouth but just shook her head. "I can call you not only my Shaeeyaa, but also my Gaarrufurendo."
Molly just stared at Tooey with a wide-eyed expression of surprise. She quickly spit out the toothpaste and rinsed her mouth. "I understand part of that, but not the other part. What did you call me?" She asked placing her toothbrush in the holder of her bath kit.
"Would you mind if I asked you something first?" He asked. "Molly nodded. "What would you call me in Gwich-in? He wondered aloud. Without hesitation, "My Sha'oodèe, Teekkone. My boyfriend Teekkone." She quickly translated.
Tooey smiled, "I am saying the same thing for you but in Japanese. Which would be Watashi no Gaarrufurendo Molly. My girlfriend Molly." He said smiling. He then turned on the hot water, which quickly steamed the mirror. Once covered in steam, he wrote out 私のガールフレンド"."
Molly turned off the water, and helped Tooey back into the chair. "Are you angry I called you that since you couldn't understand me?" Tooey asked as she wheeled him into the bedroom. She walked over the dresser and pulled out his clothes and then retrieved hers from her backpack.
Leaning over him she placed her arms over each side of his neck and pulled him in for a deep kiss, which they savored for a few long seconds before coming up for air. "No, I loved it. Hearing you speak Japanese and including my name made what we have here even more special. Just wanted you to know." She said releasing him.
Let me help you get dressed and then I'll get dressed. Then we'll go down and cook for our mothers." She told him, reaching for the hem of his pajama top and pulling it off of him.
She handed him his t-shirt which he put on quickly. She then knelt and undid the lower straps, and he followed suit and undid the upper ones. She had him changed a lot quicker than she had the first time, she had helped him.
She finished dressing him when she tied his sneakers since bending over not something he could do. "If you're always going to be inside, why not wear slippers?" Molly asked standing up.
"I can't, my feet get cold. Especially downstairs. So, instead I wear sneakers or boots." He relayed to her. "Oh okay. Makes sense." She removed her pajamas and folded them neatly and placed them next to the backpack where her clothes were. She picked up her jeans and t-shirt and Qaspeg. Feeling the chill, she put her pants on, then her t-shirt and finally her Qaspeg. She then reached for her hairbrush and quickly tamed her hair.
Tooey watched as she went through her usual ritual before getting behind the chair and pushing him to the stairs. Layla and Atsaq heard the chair being moved close to the stairs.
They got up and walked up and brought the chair down for Molly and Tooey, so she didn't have to do another trip. "Thanks mom, and Atsaq." Molly intoned as she guided Tooey from the stairs to the chair and helped his to sit down before sitting herself.
"Are you okay, Molly?" Layla asked watching her as she took a few deep breaths and held her head. "I am fine, just another headache. Helping Tooey is the fun part of my day, the head pain not so much."
"Where are your pills I gave you Molly?" Atsaq asked walking to the stairs. "In my backpack, in the front pocket Atsaq. Thanks for getting them." Molly added. Layla went to the sink and got her a glass of water.
Atsaq returned with the pills and gave a couple of them to Molly. She took them with the water her mother had given her. "Thanks again, Atsaq and Mom." "Your welcome, just make sure you take them promptly when you're supposed to. That way you don't get sudden headaches like that. Especially when you are stressed by helping Tooey." Atsaq admonished her.
"I am not stressed Atsaq. I love helping Tooey." Molly countered. Atsaq and Layla smiled. "Don't let him take advantage of your generosity." Molly immediately shook her head and then stopped abruptly, holding it again. "He won't Atsaq." Molly said quietly.
"Now that Tooey is downstairs, and I'm medicated. Breakfast was promised. She got behind him, pushed him to the stove, and locked the chair in front of it. Tooey reached forward and pulled himself into a standing position and waited.
She retrieved the pancake mix, sausage, coffee and tea from the cupboard and refrigerator. In no time at all, Tooey managed the pancakes, and sausage while Molly set the table and got each of their mother's a refill on their morning beverages.
"Stack is -" Tooey started to say before Molly whisked in and picked up the steaming plate of pancakes and sausage kissing him as she turned around.
She walked over to the table and placed the middle of the table. Turning around she saw that Tooey already had the syrup, and fireweed jelly in his hands and was holding them out for her.
He placed them into her hand. She smiled at him. He returned the smile squeezing her hand when she took the jelly from his hand. Layla smiled as she watched the exchange the kids were having as they prepared breakfast.
She placed them onto the table and returned to Tooey and rolled him to his spot at the table next to her. Atsaq saw this, she smiled as Molly sat down next to him. "Everything looks great Molly, Tooey. Maybe we should have you two make breakfast every day." Atsaq said reaching for the syrup.
"I don't mind." Molly said. "Neither do I." Tooey said joining Molly. "When we finish, could you help me with the dogs, Layla. Since Molly has been busy with Tooey, breakfast and all." Layla laughed, "Sure thing. I also don't mind doing something different for a change."
Just before Layla got up her phone rang. She walked over to her parka, and picked up the phone.
"Trini is fine, I can handle the dog and the chickens and no, I am good.
She walked over and handed the phone to Atsaq. She returned to Tooey, "Why are you going upstairs?" Layla asked. "Tooey said he wanted thicker pants. So, I was going to help him get them."
Atsaq smiled and shook her head. "Molly, leave him here. Get the pants and then help him change without climbing up and down the stairs, killing yourself."
Molly looked back at Atsaq, and then back at Tooey. "That is a good idea. I'll be right back Sha'oodèe." Tooey smiled when he heard the Gwich'in word for boyfriend.
"What did she call you Tooey?" Atsaq asked. Before he could answer Layla answered for him, "Boyfriend. She called him boyfriend." Layla advised.
Turning the chair, "How do I say girlfriend in Gwich'in Layla." Layla smiled, walked over, and whispered in his ear. Tooey smiled and waited for Molly to return with his thicker set of pants.
A few moments later, Molly plodded back down the stairs, with the pants in her hands. "I'm back, did you miss me." She asked Tooey. "I am always do Va'oodèe." He said smiling wider.
Molly smiled but was also very surprised. Teekkone, I didn't know you knew the Gwich'in word for girlfriend. I am pleasantly surprised. She handed him the pants and leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek.
Before she could stand up he pulled her onto the armrest and whispered to her. "Your mom told me the word a few seconds before you came down. So, I am sorry that the kiss was not merited."
"I don't care." She whispered back. "I still love you just the same. My Sha'oodèe. Do you like that better than Teekkone?" She asked him still sitting on the armrest.
Placing a kiss on her cheek next to her ear, she heard him say, "Yes, I do. I wish my legs didn't hurt." Molly turned to him. "Why?" She wondered. "I would love to have you on my lap right now where I can hug you whenever I want to." He informed her.
Looking down at his lap and then to their mother's that were in conversation. She turned back and whispered again, "I would love to be held by you whenever you want to. Okay Sha'oodèe." She said standing up.
Both were jostled from their conversation when Layla said out loud, "I'll be back in a few minutes. Do you need anything from the trading post Molly." She looked from Tooey to Atsaq and back to her mother. "I thought I was going back home tonight." She said looking at Atsaq.
"I wouldn't want to monopolize your time. I mean your parents haven't seen you in days, since you've been attached to Tooey there. I can handle it if you want to take a break." Atsaq said smiling.
Layla saw the sad face Molly had as she looked back to the floor in thought. "I think we can spend another day without Molly. Besides her Sha'oodèe still needs her, and I can't deprive her of the quality time they want. I'll bring some more clothes for you. Do you have your pajamas Molly." She nodded. "I have them mom, thanks."
"I'll leave them with Atsaq, have fun at Trini's place." Layla said standing up and getting her parka and gloves on and leaving for the Trading Post.

Joy raised her eyes from her book as Trini walked over to the phone. She picked it up and was about to dial. "Trini, they said they're coming. I think you can wait until they get here." Joy said turning the page.
Trini was about to put the phone down when it rang while it was in her hand. She quickly brought the phone to her ear. "Hello?" She asked. "Hi Trini, how are you doing?" She smiled, "I am doing all right. Thanks for asking. What's up?" Layla thought for a second, "I was actually calling for your mother, can I speak to her please?"
"Of course, you can. Hang on." Trini turned, "Mom, it for you. It's Layla." Joy put her book down and walked over and got the phone from Trini. "Hey, Layla. How can I help you?" She asked. "Molly is wheeling Tooey over to your place. I need you to do me a favor." Joy smiled.
"What would you like for me to do?" Joy asked intrigued. "Put out three cups of hot cocoa for the kids. Tell them it's from me, since I promised that once the kids were all safe in Qyah, they would celebrate with a cup of cocoa like they do when they are at the Trading Post."
Joy's smile broadened, "I would love to do that for you. Let me get started since they are already on their way. Thanks for the head-up, Layla. I'll let you know how it turns out. Have a good afternoon. Bye." Joy said pressing the button to end the call.
She quickly turned and handed the phone to Daniel. I am on a mission, could you please put that on the charger?" She said kissing him on the cheek as she dashed for the kitchen.
"Sure thing, need help with something?" He asked placing the phone on the charger. "When you're done, come here and help me." She said placing a pot of water on the burner. Walking over he was going to ask her what she needed.
She closed the gap and kissed him so he couldn't say a word. When she released him, she whispered, "Layla promised that the kids would celebrate back together in Qyah, with hot cocoa at the Trading Post. Since they are not meeting there, it is happening here. There was a small cake in the refrigerator. I'll use that, prepare the mugs of hot chocolate when the water boils, okay?" She said going to the refrigerator.
"Yes m'lady." Daniel said jumping into action and getting the mugs down, and then filling them with hot chocolate mix. Joy pulled out the small cake and cut three slices from it and placed them onto serving plates.
All too quickly there was a knock at the door. Daniel and Joy paused briefly as Trini walked to the door and opened it. They finished their preparation for the kids. As she was hugging them, Daniel poured the water into the mug and Joy placed each plate next to the cup and fork.
*A few moments earlier *
Trini opened the door and took in the sight of her two best friends. Seeing Tooey still in the wheelchair made her said, but it didn't last long since Tooey was smiling at her just like Molly was.
"Molly! Tooey!" she screamed rushing up to Molly and hugging her. Not sure how to hug Tooey she just wrapped his head in a hug. "We missed you Trini." Molly said moving back behind Tooey's chair. Trini stepped aside and allowed them passage into her home.
Molly and Tooey looked up, "Hi Joy, Hi Daniel. Are we interrupting something? At her question Trini turned around and looked at her parents. "Mom, dad, what are you doing? Why is there cake? What's in the mugs?"
Seeing the kids confusion, they both glanced at each other and just yelled, "Surprise!" All of the kids exchanged glances. "This is the first time all three of you have been together since returning from the hospital right?" Joy asked them.
Molly smiled since now she knew what was going on. "My mother placed three mugs with hot chocolate pack on the counter at the Trading Post for the first time we were all together. Mom must have told them, and they prepared this for us." Molly informed them. They each smiled brightly.
Turning to Molly and Tooey, "Do you know what I like about celebrations?" Trini asked them. They both shook their heads. "Sharing them with the people I love." She said again walking over and hugging them both. Letting them go, they all walked or rolled to the dining room table and took a seat. Tooey already being in a chair just sat in the space the chair that Daniel removed used to be.
"I know it's not much, but I would like to say something." Joy said. The kids gave her their full attention. "I know I was not here this time to help in the recovery efforts, but I am glad my Trini Bear was brought home safely, just a little banged up. I am also grateful for the help you two provided that helped everyone to find and bring you all back home." She said hugging Daniel's arm.
They all watched as Joy wiped her eyes. "I love all of you, and this celebration is just a small token of that love. I am not your mothers, but you are just as much my children as my family is to this village that never gave up until you were all found." Joy punctuated this by walking around the table and hugging and placing a kiss on each of the kids foreheads.
When she reached Trini, Trini hugged her back but said, "I am your child, mom." She said kissing her neck as she received her forehead kiss. Molly and Tooey laughed as they watched Joy making the rounds and ending with Trini.
Daniel broke the mood by saying, "I am forever grateful for having picked Qyah as our home, and I am grateful for the people that helped to make us welcome to Alaska. Now drink and eat before the hot chocolate gets cold and the cake get hot." Daniel told them.
Joy and Daniel walked away from the dining room. "We'll leave you to do some catching up. If you need anything just call and we'll do what we can." Daniel imparted to them.
Molly, Tooey and Trini watched as they left the room and went to their bedroom. A moment later, they heard the door being closed. Trini picked up her cup of hot chocolate. "A toast, to the three musketeers, reuniting."
Molly and Tooey each raised their mugs. "To the three musketeers!" they couldn't touch mugs, but they each took a drink. Placing their mugs down, Trini picked up her fork. "How have you two been doing lately? Does you mom know you have a girlfriend Tooey?"
Molly smiled placing her mug down, and eating a piece of the cake. "I have been really busy helping take care of 12 dogs, 6 chickens, my Sha'oodèe, and talking to my mother, and last but not least doing all of this without throwing up once since yesterday." As she finished, her stomach gurgled for all to hear.
Tooey and Trini exchanged glances before turning towards Molly. Molly seeing their expressions, "I said since yesterday, it could happen again today or not at all. I am trying to be optimistic." She said crossing her arms. Trini and Tooey smiled at Molly's explanation.
"Okay Mabray, that was half of the question, now answer the other half of the question Ookami." Molly uncrossed her arms and looked towards Tooey, He was still chewing his cake, when he realized that the focus was on him. "Wait a minute, what was that word you said? Noodle something," Trini pondered.
Catching on, "Oh you mean when I called Tooey Sha'oodèe. It's Gwich'in for boyfriend. In case you're wondering Va'oodèe means girlfriend." Molly concluded reaching for her mug.
"Oh, that sounded cool. Both words are good. More words for me to remember and use when I have a boyfriend." Trini remarked turning her attention to Tooey. "Spill it Ookami." Trini said confronting him.
He smiled, "She's my girlfriend, what more do you want me to say Trini?" He conveyed to her. "Tooey, I know she's your girlfriend. Does your mother know about your relationship?" Tooey raised his mug but nodded as he was drinking.
Trini was surprised, "They both know and neither of them are angry with you." Trini said in a bewildered tone. Molly and Tooey looked at each and smiled again. "Mom actually said I can do anything I want, but if something doesn't feel right. I can talk to her about it." Molly disclosed to Trini. "My mom was ticked when she thought she was the last to know about it. She wasn't, my father doesn't know about it, unless mom called him. Tooey admitted.
Trini was happy to know that her friends are now even closer. "I am glad you two are boyfriend / girlfriend. I love you both. I hope your relationship grows and grows."
"Thanks Trini." Molly said.
"Thanks Trini." Tooey said.
"How have things been with you and Robbie? You only mentioned him the one time. Have you been able to talk to him since he left the hospital?"
Molly asked. Trini nodded quickly. "I talked to him yesterday. He asked me to visit him on the weekend. Since the weekend is almost gone, we're planning to go to Nenana next weekend so I can visit him." Trini said smiling.
"Trini, Molly never really told me much about Robbie. What's he like?" Tooey asked. "He's a nice person. He was in the hospital because he was walking the Tanana river, fell in, and drowned. He told me when he woke up, he was in the hospital." Trini began before getting sullen.
Noticing this, Tooey looked from Trini to Molly, but he did a double take when he noticed that Molly also had a sullen face. "Why are you girls saddened. Have I missed something?" He asked aloud.
Breaking out of their thoughts, they both smiled, "I was just wondering something Tekkone." Molly relayed. "Me too, but I was thinking about something else." Trini said.
"Can I ask what was being thought of. I am curious." Tooey asked. "That other thing about Robbie, was that the doctor's feel he tried to kill himself. So, he has to see a doctor a couple of times a week."
Stopping, she took a drink of her rapidly cooling hot chocolate. Tooey turned to Molly. "What's on your mind watashi no gaarrufurendo?" Trini's eyes widened. "Bless you, Tooey?" Trin said smiling to him.
"I didn't sneeze Trini. I was asking my girlfriend what was on her mind." Tooey explained. "Oh, I didn't know you were doing that because I never heard you say the Va noodle word. You said something totally different." Trini reminded him.
"Sorry, Trini what I had said was watashi no gaarrufurendo, it means my girlfriend in Japanese." Trini put her mug down. "You spoke Japanese, that's the first time I ever heard you speak it. I didn't know you knew Japanese. I mean I've heard you speak in Yu'pik, Koyukon, Athabascan, some Gwich-in words and English of course but never Japanese. This is so cool." Trini said sighing contentedly.
"I loved hearing it too Trini. It sounds cool when your boyfriend calls you something you've only just realized had always been there. I just wished I had seen it before we got stuck in a hole." She remarked smiling at both of them.
"I am glad we got stuck because we worked together to help ourselves like your mother said Trini. I am also glad, I made my feelings known to the person I have known and loved my whole life." He said looking towards Molly. "I am also glad for the friends I have that I love just as much." He said turning to Trini.
Trini smiled lifting her mug, she noticed it was empty. "Does anyone else want a refill?" She said holding her empty mug up. Tooey and Trini lifted their mugs, and Tooey quickly drained the lukewarm liquid. Molly saw hers was empty too.
"Yes please." They both said holding their mugs up as well. "Okay, give me a sec. I'll put some more water on." Molly walked around the table. "I'll help fill the cups with hot chocolate." Trini turned from the sink, "Sure, and thanks."
"I am sorry I can't do anything Trini." Tooey apologized. Trini turned while the kettle was filling. "Tooey, you did more than enough, when we were in the hole. Let me do something now since I couldn't do anything then. This is your time to take a break, I love you too, but this is my time to do something for you and Molly." Trini admonished him with a smile.
"Thanks Trini." Molly stated.
"Thanks Trini." Tooey stated.
They both laughed as they mimicked each other again for the umpteenth time. Trini joined them in laughing too. "See we are such great friends. We know what the others are thinking. Am I right?" Trini asked smiling.
Tooey and Molly exchanged glances as they smiled. Molly walked over and hugged Trini, "I am very glad that we're all home, and back together. Not exactly how we left to go to Nenana, but I would not change a thing except how we all got injured. I still wish that never happened." Molly remarked looking at Tooey.
"I am glad to have been able to help us when we were in trouble. Now we get to celebrate our reunion, and heal together. Just like we do everything mostly." Tooey added.
Trini, Molly and Tooey shared another hug. They also had a few tears as they were glad to have made it through the turmoil and came out on the other side banged up, but still together.
