Chapter 3 - Amy's Anticipation
Author's note: Hi, my dear readers! I'm back with the third chapter, which will switch to Amy's POV. Without further ado, it's response time!
therandomone95, I'm glad you are! I'm admittedly a sucker for SonAmy fluff too. Then again, if I wasn't I wouldn't have written this story, as well as all the SonAmy moments in "The Speedy Chocolatier Showdown"! Speaking of which, that story is NOT abandoned despite the fact I haven't updated it in literally years. :P
karimalibhai123, what makes you say Tails is like Sonic? XD Tails' mind is way more analytical than Sonic's as far as I know. And yes, Eggman's gotta watch out for some righteous anger from Amy!
CVGWJames, Sonic got the girl alright! :)
UltimateCCC, a contingency plan, eh? Well, if that situation arises, then yes, better hope Sonic's got one!
EmanresuLanigironu, I'm afraid I can't directly reply to your hypotheses since otherwise I'll be spoiling future events, but you can guarantee there will be some action during the date if Eggman's involved! XD Now, on with the story!
"Take my hand, Amy," Sonic said, and she reached for it without any hesitation. Sonic gripped her small hand firmly yet gently, and they raced side-by-side on the beach past Hôtel de Blanc towards a scenic cobblestone path, which was situated between two dense clumps of trees. They slowed down to a walking pace as Sonic led his pink counterpart down the path, which twisted and turned through the bushes. Every thirty feet or so, a pair of lamps that flanked the sides of the path cast a warm, orange glow onto it. Amy tilted her head downwards ever so slightly, watching how their shadows grew longer and shorter as they silently passed under each lamp.
"I wonder where we're going," Amy said softly.
"You'll find out in just a few seconds, Ames," Sonic replied with a wink.
Before long, the path came to an end, revealing a large, open meadow that was secluded off from the rest of the resort. There were thousands of flowers that came in all different colors, and in the very center was a small pond. The water was completely still, allowing the moon to reflect off its pristine, mirror-like surface. Not too far away from where Sonic and Amy stood, there was a large tree stump, and a group of fireflies were dancing around it. Amy's face was filled with awe as she feasted her eyes on her surroundings.
"Awww, this is so romantic, Sonic!" she squealed with delight. "Thank you so much for bringing me here." She laid her present for Tails' birthday party on the soft grass, and Sonic did the same with his.
"I thought this would be a good way to surprise you while there's still time," Sonic said, his voice barely louder than a whisper. He gently held onto Amy's hand as he led her towards the tree stump. The fireflies moved out of the way as the two hedgehogs sat down beside each other. "I hope you like it."
"I love it, Sonic," Amy said, leaning her head on Sonic's shoulder. He wrapped an arm around her back, and he watched as the fireflies began to dance in circles around him and Amy. "Did you know about this place beforehand?" Sonic nodded, much to Amy's delight.
"I noticed it the last time I flew with Tails in the Tornado," Sonic answered, "but I didn't think much of it at that moment. When I saw you on the beach not long ago, I knew how much time we had left, so I tried to hide my intentions by challenging you to a race. I mean, it sure beats walking all the way here, doesn't it, Ames?" Sonic let out a small chuckle.
"Do you...have something else to say, Sonic?" Amy inquired, tilting her head to one side. "I won't use my hammer if I disagree with you, I promise."
Sonic looked away for a few seconds and brushed his hand up against his quills before turning around to face Amy head-on. He took a deep breath.
"Amy," Sonic began, "I-I..." His voice faded away and he shook his head in embarrassment. "I...lost my train of thought."
"Come on, Sonic, tell me!" Amy said eagerly, a hopeful smile stretching across her face.
"Well...okay," Sonic muttered, looking down at his shoes. "I'll try to say it quickly. Y-you know how for all those years, I've always been running away from you." Amy nodded. "Now instead, think of all the times we've actually been with each other. I saved you from that nasty green robot who relentlessly followed you around in Station Square. We've celebrated each other's birthdays, and most of the holidays, too. And last but not least, remember the very first time I rescued you from Metal Sonic?"
"I do," Amy reminisced. "That's...where it all began, back on Little Planet. We were so young back then. You were, and always will be, my hero." A single tear managed to break free from her lower eyelid, and it slid down her cheek.
Sonic smiled, wiping the tear off Amy's face with a gloved finger. "I just wanted to say that we've come a long way since then, and I know all too well how much you admire me." He took a deep breath. "I'll admit, Ames, I have feelings for you too. I love you...Rosy the Rascal."
Amy's heart skipped a beat, and before she could say anything more, Sonic leaned in.
Their lips met, and Amy felt every beat of her heart, every inch of her body flooded with warmth. It was everything she'd ever dreamed of, everything she had wanted to hear from him.
But then, everything began to change. The meadow, the fireflies, the trees, and even Sonic's face, started to distort and swirl around her.
Without warning, everything went black.
Anywhere you wanna go,
Anything you need to know,
All the best in life,
I wanna get it for—
Amy's right hand immediately shot out from under the covers, silencing the cheerful tune on her phone. She stretched her arms and sat up in bed, smiling as the details of her dream lingered vividly in her mind. The sunlight streamed through the pale pink curtains of her bedroom, casting a warm glow across the space.
She glanced at the sleek alarm clock on her bedside table. Its soft white digits read 9:00 AM. Right beside it was her phone, still lit up with the notification she'd been waiting for: February 14th. Valentine's Day. Amy's smile widened as she swiped away the reminder, barely able to contain her excitement.
"Today's the day," she whispered to herself, her heart skipping a beat at the thought. "The day I've been waiting for ever since we first met."
She eagerly swung her legs over the side of the bed, and her bare feet sank into the soft, cream-colored area rug that covered most of the floor. With a spring in her step, she crossed the room and drew the curtains wide open, flooding the space with sunlight that chased away the cool morning air.
Her bedroom was modern and yet unmistakably Amy, reflecting her vibrant personality and how her tastes had matured. The plush, upholstered headboard of her low-profile bed perfectly matched her quilted comforter. Framed botanical prints adorned the walls, and a rose-gold pendant light hung above, casting a warm glow that softened every edge of the room.
A nearby wall calendar caught her eye. She had marked Valentine's Day with a bold red circle, adding a tiny red heart and the silhouettes of her and Sonic's faces beside it, colored pink for her and blue for him. Amy giggled, tapping the date on the calendar with her index finger. "No turning back now, Amy," she told herself.
She strode into her ensuite, her excitement for the day ahead rising with each step. The centerpiece of the room was a white freestanding tub with sleek rose-gold fixtures, positioned under a large frosted skylight that flooded the area with natural light. The walls were lined with white marble tiles veined with soft pink streaks, and a white floating vanity supported a sink and a large mirror.
Amy twisted the taps, letting warm water fill the tub as she grabbed a small jar of rose-scented bath salts from the neatly arranged tray on the vanity. It wasn't long before Amy shut off the taps, and with a sigh of contentment, she leaned back against the sloped edge of the tub. She closed her eyes, and the dream replayed in her mind like a movie. Sonic's hand in hers, his nervous but heartfelt confession, and the beautiful meadow illuminated by moonlight.
Was it a sign? she wondered, tracing a small circle in the water with her finger. Or was it just my heart telling me what I've always known? That I'll never stop loving him.
As the warm water continued to soothe her, Amy couldn't help but feel as though the dream had set the perfect mood for her big day. Sonic's not the only one who's changed over the years, she thought. I've grown too. And today, I'll get to show him just how much!
With a relaxed sigh, she opened the drain before getting out of the tub, grabbing a fluffy pink towel from the heated rack. Wrapping herself in its warmth, she dried herself off and walked over to her vanity. Resting in a glass dish beside the sink was a small, white lily. Its petals were almost glowing in the morning light. She picked it up carefully, twirling the stem between her fingers. A fond smile crossed her lips as she remembered the little blue bird she once rescued and named Lily.
Turning towards the mirror, Amy tucked the flower behind her left ear, its stem lightly brushing her fur. She adjusted it slightly, angling her head to make sure it fit just right.
Her gaze turned to the pristine, white hairband that was hanging on a nearby hook. It was simple yet elegant, chosen specifically for today. She picked it up and held it for a moment, her fingers brushing over the soft fabric. Sliding it gently into place, Amy smoothed out a few stray quills and admired the subtle difference it made. The white band was such a contrast to her usual red one, and wearing it made her feel a little more sophisticated, a little more prepared for what was to come.
Amy's stomach suddenly growled, causing her to chuckle, and reminding her she hadn't eaten since the night before. She put on a pink robe and tightened it comfortably before walking into her kitchen. The space was just as modern as the rest of her home, with clean lines, soft pastel accents, and warm lighting that complemented the off-white cabinets and quartz countertops.
She opened the fridge and pulled out some strawberries, vanilla yogurt, and granola. "Something light but special should do the trick," she murmured to herself as she put together a small parfait. It was a simple dish, but arranging the layers of fruit and granola allowed her to absorb the moment. As she placed a sliced strawberry on top, she couldn't help but smile.
After grabbing a spoon and carrying the parfait to the table, Amy sat down and took a small bite. While savoring her breakfast, she closed her eyes, imagining how her date with Sonic might unfold: the two of them having a rematch on the bumper cars, riding the gondola high above the park, Sonic cracking a joke or two, maybe...maybe leaning her head on his shoulder as the stars came out. A soft giggle escaped her lips at the thought.
It wasn't like her to get this caught up in what-ifs, but today felt different. She could sense it, deep in her heart. Sonic wouldn't have asked her to Twinkle Park unless he'd thought it through.
Amy set down her spoon, staring into her parfait as though it held the secret answer to her thoughts. "He's changed so much," she said with a smile. "We both have."
There was no denying how much more thoughtful Sonic had become lately. His awkward but sweet invitation was enough to prove it. And as for Amy, even though she still felt true love for Sonic, she wasn't the same impulsive, love-struck girl who relentlessly chased him wherever he went. Today wasn't about proving her love to him; it was about celebrating the connection they had already shared. That thought filled her with warmth from head to toe.
For the next fifteen minutes, Amy focused on sprucing up her home, clearing away the remaining dishes, straightening the pillows on the living room couch, and adjusting a vase of flowers, making sure the petals faced in just the right direction.
Amy stepped back to admire her work. Her home felt fresh and inviting, just the way she wanted it. She took a calming breath and re-entered the bedroom, her large walk-in closet being the next stop along the journey.
She approached the full-length mirror at the far end, running her fingers lightly over the edge of the pristine white headband she had put on earlier. With care, she adjusted its position, ensuring it framed her face just right. She smiled at the reflection of the white lily tucked behind her left ear, wondering if Sonic would happen to notice it.
Once she was satisfied, Amy took some time to brush her teeth before turning towards her desk and settling into her chair. The space was her sanctuary, blending warmth and functionality with touches of her creative spirit. Her desk featured a sleek silver iMac, and its glossy screen reflected the soft glow of the rose-gold desk lamp above it. A small collection of framed photographs was tucked neatly in one corner, showcasing her adventures with Cream and her Chao companion Cheese, her first-ever photo with both Sonic and herself, and a picture of her and Tails laughing together on the beach.
Next to the photos stood a small figurine of a Chao, painted in pastel blues and pinks, and a tiny glass rose gifted to her by Cream for her last birthday. A few pens and colored markers were neatly arranged in a heart-shaped ceramic holder, and her journal, with its pink leather cover adorned with an embossed floral pattern, sat in the center.
Amy opened the small chest of keepsakes she kept tucked in one of the desk's drawers, and she gently placed the chest onto the desk itself. She opened the lid, and her fingers lightly brushed over each item inside: photos, ornaments, and other mementos she'd collected over the years. Each one told a story, but only one would feel just right as a gift for Sonic. She smiled as her hand settled on a small, silver charm shaped like a star. It was simple, yet elegant, and carried so much meaning. It reminded her of when she and Sonic returned to Earth from Little Planet, after Sonic had rescued her from his robotic nemesis all these years ago. She remembered when they sat together beneath the stars, sharing a heartfelt moment while the world seemed to stand still.
Amy held the charm up to the light, twirling it in her fingers. "This is perfect," she said. "This will remind him of everything we've been through, and how far we've come together."
Setting it aside, she reached for a roll of light blue wrapping paper dotted with white clouds. She put the charm into a small box and neatly folded the wrapping paper around it, before topping it all off with a golden bow.
As she placed the wrapped gift on her desk, Amy allowed herself a moment to imagine Sonic's reaction. Would he understand the thought behind it? She could only hope it would mean as much to him as it did to her.
"All done," she said with a satisfied smile.
Amy reached for the journal and opened it to a fresh page. She removed the cap from her favorite pen, a white one with a soft pink grip, and hovered it over the paper for just a moment.
Her thoughts flowed effortlessly from her mind to the page as she began to write:
"February 14, Valentine's Day. Today feels different, and very special, in a way I can't quite describe. I'm not nervous, just…excited. I've waited so long for this moment with Sonic, but I've learned to treasure our time together without needing more than what's already there. Is it silly to hope for more? Or maybe today is simply about being grateful for everything we already have. Anyway, Sonic asked me out to Twinkle Park, a place that holds very special memories for me (and some not-so-special memories like being kidnapped by that green bucket of bolts). If anything happens to either Sonic or me during our date, one of us will be there to help the other, because that's what partners are there for, romantic or not."
Amy paused, tapping the pen against her chin as her thoughts continued to swirl. She smiled softly as she wrote her final line:
"Whatever happens, I just hope Sonic knows how much he means to me. I still love him with all my heart."
She dotted the period with an extra flourish before leaning back in her chair, turning her head to gaze out the window. Valentine's Day had only just begun, but she knew already that it would be the best day of her life so far.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Amy leaped out of her chair, her heart now racing faster than ever.
"Oh my gosh, he's heeeeerrrrrreeeeeee!"
Author's note: I hope you enjoyed this chapter! As always, please feel free to review, and stay tuned for the next one!
I have some unfortunate news regarding my other SonAmy fic, "A Surprise For Amy", a oneshot I wrote in 2019. While working on the 2nd chapter for this story, I accidentally updated it over the original chapter of the oneshot I had written. Unfortunately, I couldn't recover the original chapter, and as a result, I had to delete "A Surprise For Amy" from FFN. To those of you who have read, favorited, and reviewed the story, I am deeply sorry for this mistake. I'm really upset with myself, but thankfully, there's a silver lining: the dream Amy had at the beginning of this chapter, which was borrowed directly from "A Surprise For Amy", was the climax, so at least the emotional highlight from that story is still intact. I'm shedding happy tears knowing that much. :')
