Chapter 4

Demon Blood Detox Ends Badly

Bobby sat across from Azure. "So spill how did you end up with Sam and Dean?"

Azure took a soft breath tucking some hair behind her ear. "Well… they came to my father's house questioning his book… and well… my dad… he decided that it was wise for me to go with them." She took a soft breath. "I don't really know how much of a help I've been to them… I guess they thought that maybe prophet blood ran through me so that I would be able to see things." She shrugged her shoulders. "But ever since joining them… my dad hasn't been in touch…"

Bobby looked at the young woman concerned. "You haven't heard from your dad and you're still with the brothers without even going to check on him?"

"I know my dad, sir." She said softly as she put her hands on her lap. "He tends to go off the radar often… he'll go days without calling."

Bobby rubbed his mouth as he looked at Azure. He was so unsure of why she was going into this world on a limb like she was. He couldn't understand why she wanted to help Sam and Dean. Was something there that she wasn't telling him.

Azure sat in the living room with Dean and Bobby looking through a book of lore that Bobby had sitting out. She nibbled her bottom lip softly.

Bobby poured three glasses of whiskey handing one to Dean and the third one to Azure.

"Stop! Stop!" Sam yelled from the panic room his voice getting hoarse as he continued to yell.

Dean took a breath as he downed the shot quickly. "How long is this gonna go on?"

"Here, let me look it up in my demon-detox manual. Oh wait. No one ever wrote one. No telling how long it'll take. Hell, or if Sam will even live through it."

The phone rang interrupting them from their talk.

Bobby let out a sigh and answered it. "Hello. ...Suck dirt and die, Rufus. You call me again, I'll kill you."

"What's up with Rufus?"

"He knows." The phone rang again and answered. "I'm busy, you son of a bitch. This better be important."

SPNSPN

"The news. The news ain't good." Bobby explained to Dean and Azure.

"This is what Rufus called about? 'Key West sees ten species go extinct'."

"Yep. Plus Alaska. Fifteen-man fishing crew all stricken blind, cause unknown. New York, teacher goes postal, locks the door, kills exactly sixty-six kids. All this in a single day. I looked them up. There's no doubt about it. They're all seals. Breaking. Fast."

"How many are left?"

"Who knows? Can't be many. Where the hell are your angel pals?"

Azure's hands went to her ears as the ringing that she had been hearing for a while came back causing her to close her eyes in agony. God it was so loud. Why was the ringing so loud in her ears. She had some relief when she had joined the brothers and now it was coming back in full force.

"You tell me." Dean said leaning back against the table looking at Bobby.

"I'm just wondering."

"What?"

"The apocalypse being nigh and all...is now really the right time to be having this little domestic drama of ours?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, I don't like this any more than you do, but Sam can kill demons. He's got a shot at stopping Armageddon."

"So what? Sacrifice Sam's life, his soul, for the greater good? Is that what you're saying? Times are bad, so let's use Sam as a nuclear warhead?"

"Look, I know you hate me for suggesting it. I hate me for suggesting it. I love that boy like a son. All I'm saying is maybe he's here right now instead of on the battlefield because we love him too much."

Azure looked down biting her lip as the ringing in her ears stopped. She looked up at Bobby and Dean knowing that the tension was running high and it wasn't a good sign of what was happening. She swallowed the lump in her throat as she closed her eyes.

Dean looked around with Azure and Castiel arrived. Dean looked at Castiel with narrowed eyes. "Well, it's about time. I've been screaming myself hoarse out here for about two and a half hours now."

Castiel looked at the two of them with his brows raised in confusion of why Chuck's daughter was there with Dean. "What do you want?"

"You can start with what the hell happened in Illinois."

"What do you mean?"

"Cut the crap. You were gonna tell me something."

"Well, nothing of import."

"You got ass-reamed in heaven but it was not of import?"

"Dean, I can't. I'm sorry. Get to the reason you really called me. It's about Sam, right?"

"Can he do it? Kill Lilith, stop the apocalypse?"

"Possibly, yes. But as you know, he'd have to take certain steps."

"Crank up the hell-blood regimen."

"Consuming the amount of blood it would take to kill Lilith would change your brother forever. Most likely, he would become the next creature that you would feel compelled to kill. There's no reason this would have to come to pass, Dean. We believe it's you, Dean, not your brother. The only question for us is whether you're willing to accept it. Stand up and accept your role. You are the one who will stop it."

Azure looked down, gripping her hands at her sides knowing that was going to be a difficult thing for Dean to do to stop Sam from doing what he was doing.

"If I do this, Sammy doesn't have to?"

"If it gives you comfort to see it that way."

"God, you're a dick these days." Dean walked a few steps away and sighed. "Fine, I'm in."

"You give yourself over wholly to the service of God and his angels?"

"Yeah, exactly."

"Say it."

"I give myself over wholly to serve God and you guys."

"You swear to follow his will and his word as swiftly and obediently as you did your own father's?"

"Yes, I swear. Now what?"

"Now you wait, and we call on you when it's time."

Azure swallowed the lump in her throat as she looked at Castiel.

Castiel looked at her and the ringing in her ears returned.

Dean looked at Azure with wide eyes as Azure collapsed to the ground, her hands on her ears in agony. Dean rushed over to her and kneeled down next to her. "Azure what it is?"

A scream of agony left Azure's lips as she crumpled more to the ground.

"Bobby! Dean! Azure! Help! Hey! Hey! Guys! Guys! Help! Dean!" Sam yelled from the basement.

Azure wrapped her arms shakily around herself.

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but you willingly signed up to be the angels' bitch?" Bobby said looking over at the older Winchester brother.

Dean looked over at him.

"I'm sorry. You prefer 'sucker'? After everything you said about them, now you trust them?"

"Come on, give me a little credit, Bobby. I've never trusted them less. I mean, they come on like shady politicians from planet Vulcan."

"Then why in the hell did you—"

"Because what other option do I have? It's either trust the angels or let Sammy trust a demon?"

"I see your point."

"You hear that?"

"Yeah, that's a little too much nothing."

The three of them hurried to the basement and opened the window in the door seeing Sam on the floor of the panic room, having a seizure.

"What if he's faking?"

"You really think he would?" Bobby questioned looking over.

"I think he'd do anything."

Sam is suddenly slammed against the wall by an invisible force.

"That ain't faking."

Azure rolled her eyes. "Of course it's not. He's going to get hurt if we don't do something now."

They threw the door open and charged in to get Sam down and pinned him to the cot.

"We're gonna have to tie him down for his own safety. Dean? You with me? Dean! Before he has another fit."

"Yeah, yeah. Let's just get it over with."

SPNSPN

"I'm gonna ask one more time. Are we absolutely sure we're doing the right thing?" Bobby questioned the two of them.

"Bobby, you saw what was happening to him down there. The demon blood is killing him."

"No, it isn't. We are."

"What?"

"I'm sorry. I can't bite my tongue any longer. We're killing him. Keeping him locked up down there. This cold-turkey thing isn't working. If—if he doesn't get what he needs, soon, Sam's not gonna last much longer."

"No. I'm not giving him demon blood. I won't do it."

"And if he dies?"

"Then at least he dies human! I would die for him in a second, but I won't let him do this to himself. I can't. I guess I found my line. I won't let my brother turn into a monster."

Azure cleared her throat before yelling. "HEY!"

The two men looked at her with wide eyes.

"Look I know that you two are worried about killing him, but it's the detox process."

Bobby's brows raised as he looked at Azure. "How… how do you know that."

Azure blinked a few times, racking her mind trying to figure out why she had said that. Confusion came across her face. Why did she say that?

SPNSPN

Bobby, Azure, and Dean unlocked the panic room and opened the door.

Dean looked around with his lips pursed together. "How the hell did he get out?"

"Maybe he had help. Room full of busted devil's traps."

"Demons? Ruby."

"That'd be my guess."

"How did she even touch the door?"

"You think she's got the mojo?"

"I didn't think so. I don't know, man."

"What difference does it make? How he got gone ain't as important as where he got gone to."

"Well, I'll tell you one thing. At this point I hope he's with Ruby."

"Why?"

"'Cause killing her's the next big item on my to-do list."

"I thought you were on call for angel duty."

"I am on call. In my car, on my way to murder the bitch." Dean said leaving the room.

Azure quickly followed the older brother.

"Azure… stay here."

"No, Dean. There is something else going on and I'm going with you to find out exactly what it is." She said catching up with him.

Dean turned quickly looking at her with his brows raised. He let out a breath and nodded his head. "Okay."

"One thing." Bobby called to Dean.

"What?"

"Sam don't wanna be found, which means he's gonna be damn near impossible to find."

"Yeah, we'll see."

SPNSPN

"Police found my car. Abandoned in an alley in Jamestown, North Dakota." Bobby told the two of them.

"He's switching up. Any other cars stolen in Jamestown?"

"Two. 1999 Honda Civic, blue. Nice and anonymous, like Sam likes."

"What was the other one?"

"White oh-five Escalade with custom rims. It's a neon sign."

"You're right. He'd never take that. Which is exactly what he did."

"You think?"

"I know that kid. All right, I'll head in that direction. You stay here, ride the police databases. We gotta find him quick."

SPNSPN

"Cops found the Escalade in a ditch outside Elk River." Bobby said over the phone.

"How far away am I?" Dean questioned as he drove with Azure next to him sound asleep. He was thankful that she had fallen asleep. She had been having a lot of issues with ringing in her ears which concerned him. What if she was hearing angels and he wasn't able to hear them? Or was there something much much more going on that he didn't know which was rather concerning. He already had to deal with Sam, and now her? It was something very very concerning.

"A couple of hours. I pulled up a weather map, made some calls. There's a town not far from there, Cold Spring. Lighting up with demon sign."

"A good place to look."

"Hey, listen."

"What?"

"Us finding Sam? It's gotta be about getting him back, not pushing him away."

"Right."

"I know you're mad, Dean. I understand. You got a right to be, but I'm just saying. Be good to him anyway. You gotta get through to him."

Dean hung up his phone and let out a breath as he gripped the wheel tightly in his hands. This was too much for him and he knew that he needed Sam before he ended up getting himself killed.

SPNSPN

Sam left the motel room being watched carefully by Dean and Azure. Once they saw him go they entered the room.

Ruby was still in the room and she automatically attacked Dean and a fight began between the two of them.

Sam came back into the room and defended Ruby quickly. "No. Let her go. Just take it easy."

Azure let out a scoff looking at Sam with wide eyes. She couldn't believe that Sam was protecting a demon.

"Well, it must've been some party you two had going, considering how hard you tried to keep me from crashing it. Well, solid try, but here I am."

"Dean, I'm glad you're here. Look. Let's just talk about this."

"Soon as she's dead, we can talk all you want."

"Ruby, get out of here."

"No, she's not going anywhere."

Ruby made her escape from Dean.

Sam watched her leave before turning his attention back to Dean.

"She's poison, Sam."

"It's not what you think, Dean."

"Look what she did to you. I mean, she up and vanishes weeks at a time, leaves you cracking out for another hit—"

"She was looking for Lilith."

"That is French for manipulating your ass ten ways from Sunday."

"You're wrong, Dean."

"Sam, you're lying to yourself. I just want you to be okay. You would do the same for me. You know you would."

"Just listen." Sam raised his hand realizing he's holding Ruby's knife that he had taken from Dean, and tossed it on the bed. "Just listen for a second. We got a lead on a demon close to Lilith. Come with us, Dean. We'll do this together."

"That sounds great. As long as it's you and me. Demon bitch is a dealbreaker. You kiss her goodbye, we can go right now."

"I can't."

Dean turned away nodding his head.

"Dean, I need her to help me kill Lilith. I know you can't wrap your head around it, but maybe one day you'll understand. I'm the only one who can do this, Dean."

Dean turned back around. "No, you're not the one who's gonna do this."

"Right, that's right, I forgot. The angels think it's you."

"You don't think I can?"

"No. You can't. You're not strong enough."

"And who the hell are you?"

"I'm being practical here. I'm doing what needs to be done."

"Yeah? You're not gonna do a single damn thing."

"Stop bossing me around, Dean. Look. My whole life, you take the wheel, you call the shots, and I trust you because you are my brother. Now I'm asking you, for once, trust me."

"No. You don't know what you're doing, Sam."

"Yes, I do."

"Then that's worse."

"Why? Look, I'm telling you—"

"Because it's not something that you're doing, it's what you are! It means—" Dean cut himself off looking at Sam.

"What? No. Say it." Sam said looking at Dean with tears in his eyes.

"It means you're a monster."

Sam nodded his head as a tear fell from Dean's eye. Sam didn't see it before he punched Dean. Dean went down hard onto the ground, then got back up and watched Sam for a moment before punching back.

The two of them fought around the room and Sam was dominating his older brother. Anything in the room that could break and it did.

Dean hit the floor and didn't get back up. Sam pinned him down, choking him before releasing him.

"You don't know me. You never did. And you never will." Sam said, turning to walk away.

"You walk out that door, don't you ever come back."

Azure moved quickly towards Dean as Sam stopped at the door before turning away and leaving the two of them in the room. Azure touched his cheek lightly and suddenly a light came from her hands. Azure moved back her eyes wide in shock.

Dean slowly sat up looking at her with wide eyes. "You…"
