In the dim light of dawn, Vax made his way down the corridor to meet the rest of his companions in the main hall of their stronghold. He tried to organize his thoughts on how he would explain the events of the previous night. It was not like him to bring strangers back to their quarters, let alone a woman that he was now entrusted with training, guiding, and protecting.
As they approached the room, Vax glanced over his shoulder at Kagome. Despite her extraordinary experiences and newfound powers, she seemed at ease as she flashed a casual smile. Her presence had already shifted the dynamic, and Vax couldn't deny her charm and confidence. But it was clear that her unexpected arrival needed some explanation. His comrades had a tendency to react unpredictably.
As they entered, conversation halted and all eyes turned towards Vax and the woman by his side. There was a moment of tension as everyone seemed to hold their breath. Vax took charge and introduced her.
"Everyone, this is Kagome," he began, gesturing towards her. "She's been chosen by the Raven Queen, just like me."
Vex raised an eyebrow, a mixture of amusement and curiosity playing on her lips. "So does the Raven Queen have a recruitment process now?" she teased, though there was a hint of seriousness in her question.
"It's more of a selective process," Kagome replied, picking up on Vex's playful challenge. "She called out to me and I answered."
"Well, not many get a choice in these things," Percy chimed in, adjusting his glasses and giving Vax an inquisitive look.
"That's what makes Kagome unique," Vax interjected. "The Raven Queen has chosen her to be a priestess and champion - she's not just a regular follower. And since she's now serving under her, she will also join us."
There was a pause as the group processed this information, then Pike's curiosity got the better of her. "You're a priestess? Really? Were you always one?"
Kagome nodded, a warm smile spreading across her face. "In a way. I served as a miko, a kind of priestess, in my world. I come from...let's just say, a different time and place. But yes, I've been performing spiritual duties since I was about fifteen." Her tone softened as she thought back to her life as a village miko. "Protecting people, purifying spirits - it's all I've known for a long time."
"So let me get this straight," Scanlan interrupted with his usual mischievous tone. "You're some kind of time-traveling, badass, spirit-purifying priestess from another world, and now you're with us because the Raven Queen said so?"
Kagome couldn't help but laugh at his accurate summary. "I suppose that sums it up."
Intrigued, Keyleth leaned in. "What's it like where you come from? You mentioned another world?"
Kagome smiled, feeling at ease under their curious stares. "Yes, I come from a place very different from here. I grew up in modern-day Tokyo, but I also spent years in Japan's feudal era. It was a time filled with magic, demons, and ancient spirits. I made many friends and faced countless battles."
Grog, who had been listening with excitement, nodded approvingly. "Fighting demons? Good stuff. We deal with those all the time. Ever bash in a skull?"
Kagome chuckled. "Not quite my style, but I'll do my best to keep up with your techniques, Grog." She winked at him, earning a low chuckle from the barbarian.
Pike looked at her with gentle curiosity. "So, Kagome...do you understand what it means to serve the Raven Queen? That she is death itself?"
Kagome's gaze briefly flickered towards Vax before meeting Pike's. "I understand," she said softly. "To serve her is to devote myself completely - mind, body, and soul. I will carry her power and her purpose. And while I know this may change me in ways I can't anticipate...I am ready to embrace it. My old life ended long ago without me realizing it. Now, I want to move forward."
A moment of silence fell upon Vox Machina as they absorbed her words. Percy tilted his head, studying her with his sharp gaze. "And are you prepared to follow this path?"
"Yes," Kagome replied simply. "It's time for me to create a new future, one not bound by my past."
Vax, who had been quietly observing her this whole time, nodded in satisfaction. "Then we welcome you to Vox Machina, Kagome. We will show you this new world, just as you will show us what you bring to it."
A murmur of agreement passed through the room, and Scanlan leaned back, strumming a chord on his lute. "Well then, Kagome, if you're ready to join us on our wild adventures, we'll be happy to have you. Just don't be surprised when things get a little...unconventional."
Kagome grinned, feeling the warmth of newfound comradeship surround her. "Sounds like the perfect adventure for me."
Kagome couldn't believe how quickly she had adapted to traveling with Vox Machina. They were a lively and unique group, full of vibrant personalities and fierce loyalty towards one another. Their journey took them through forests, plains, and most recently, up the side of a mountain towards a village said to be plagued by undead. Kagome felt a strong sense of purpose and connection to the Raven Queen, her newfound powers strong and her senses sharp.
She had grown accustomed to their quirks and admired the effortless bond between them. Vax effortlessly moved through the group, exchanging nods and banter with his sister Vex while keeping an eye on their surroundings. Pike exuded warmth that was both comforting and fierce in battle. Grog's loud and sometimes crude comments always brought laughter, while Scanlan's songs and jokes boosted morale.
That afternoon, as they climbed a narrow path up the mountain, Kagome found herself walking beside Vax. She was intrigued by his quiet yet perceptive nature.
"Vax," she began, glancing at him sideways. "You've been with the Raven Queen for some time now. Do you ever... get used to it?"
He turned to her with a smile, tinged with sadness. "Used to it? Not really. But I have learned to live with her presence and guidance. It's strange, but sometimes I can't remember what life was like before her." He paused, studying her. "How are you finding it?"
Kagome hesitated, looking at her hands which seemed to buzz with new energy that was both exhilarating and unsettling. "I feel... alive, more than ever before. There's a freedom in it that I didn't have before. But..." She trailed off and bit her lip. "It's also overwhelming to think that she has a plan for me that I don't fully understand."
Vax nodded knowingly. "She always has plans. Sometimes they make sense, and sometimes they don't. The important thing is knowing that she's watching and we're never as alone as we might think."
Before Kagome could respond, Grog's booming voice interrupted from ahead. "Oi! Kagome! Ever fought one of these undead before?"
She moved up to join him at the front, standing alongside Vex who had her bow ready and was scanning the landscape intently. "A few," Kagome replied with a smile. "Most of my battles were against demons, but I've also dealt with spirits that refused to move on. So I have some knowledge about purification."
Vex raised an eyebrow in curiosity. "And how exactly does that work?"
Kagome held up her hands, letting a soft glow of reiki spread over them. "My power purifies evil energy. So if I use it correctly, it should help cleanse any undead we come across." She looked around, thoughtful. "I can thank my training for that. In my world, there were countless spirits and demons that needed... encouragement to move on."
Scanlan chuckled from the back, shaking his head. "Sounds like you were in the ghostbusting business even before you met us."
As they continued walking, Kagome shared stories of her encounters with yokai and malevolent spirits while the others shared their own tales of facing death and defeating enemies. As they spoke and laughed freely, Kagome felt a warmth inside her that she hadn't realized she had been missing so deeply.
