Chapter Eight: Shadows of Betrayal
The sun was setting over the sprawling gardens of the De Rolo estate, casting a warm, golden glow over the cobblestone paths and vibrant flowers. Kagome sat cross-legged on the soft grass, her hands delicately weaving together a crown of daisies. Beside her, young Percival leaned back against a tree trunk, his usually well-kept blond hair tousled from an afternoon of running through the gardens. His small spectacles sat slightly askew on his nose, but he didn't seem to care.
"Hold still," Kagome chided gently, scooting closer to place the finished crown on his head. "There! Now you look like a proper prince."
Percy blushed, fiddling with the hem of his tunic. "A prince? I thought I was supposed to be a lord."
Kagome giggled, her laughter as light as the breeze rustling through the trees. "Lords can be princes too, you know. "
Percy's cheeks turned an even deeper shade of pink as he glanced at her. "Like who?"
She tilted her head, considering. "Hmm... someone brave and kind, who isn't afraid to stand up for what's right." She smiled at him, her blue eyes sparkling with wonder and affection.
After a moment, he looked up at her, his blue-gray eyes serious. "Kagome, do you think... do you think we could always stay together? Even when we're grown up?"
Kagome blinked in surprise, then grinned. "Of course we can. We'll be the best of friends forever."
Percy hesitated, then reached out to take her hand. "Not just friends," he said, his voice quiet but determined. "What if we... got married? Then we'd have to stay together."
Kagome's cheeks flushed, but she didn't pull her hand away. "Married? Like in the stories?"
He nodded. "Yes. I'd take care of you, and you'd take care of me. That's what married people do, right?"
She thought about it for a moment, then smiled. "Alright. It's a promise. When we're grown up, we'll get married."
Percy's face lit up with a rare, unguarded smile. "Really?"
"Really," Kagome said firmly. Then, as if to seal the deal, she leaned forward and pressed a quick, innocent kiss to his cheek.
Percy froze, his eyes wide behind his glasses. Kagome giggled at his expression, then leaned back, her face glowing with happiness. "There. Now it's official."
Percy touched his cheek where her lips had been, his heart racing. After a moment, he squared his small shoulders and, with a burst of courage, leaned in to kiss her cheek in return. "Now it's really official," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kagome beamed at him, her hand still clasped in his. "We'll be the best prince and princess ever," she declared.
"Or lord and lady," Percy corrected, though his smile was soft. "As long as it's with you."
They sat together as the sun dipped below the horizon, their childish promise hanging in the air like the first stars of twilight, unbroken and full of hope.
Leaving Ripley in her cell, they moved forward, Cassandra leading them with quiet determination. But there was a tension in her movements, an almost mechanical quality that set Kagome on edge. Cassandra's gaze flicked back to Percy, her expression hard to read.
As they descended deeper into the dungeon, Cassandra stopped at the threshold of a large, echoing chamber, and Vox Machina hesitated behind her. The room was vast, the walls lined with strange, glinting devices, and a deep pit loomed at its center.
"Cassandra?" Percy called softly. "What is this?"
She turned to face him, her expression distant, eyes glazed as though she were caught in a dream. And in that moment, Kagome felt a prickling sensation at the back of her mind, a heavy pressure settling over her thoughts. She struggled against it, but the feeling only grew stronger, a dark fog descending over her mind.
Cassandra's voice echoed hollowly, her words laced with an unnatural charm. "I'm sorry, brother… but I'm where I belong now."
Before Percy could react, Cassandra twisted a lever on the wall, and a thick metal grate slammed down between Vox Machina and the exit. Percy rushed forward, gripping the bars, his voice rising in panic.
"Cassandra! What are you doing?"
But she didn't respond, her gaze fixed on something beyond them, her expression empty, as though all that remained was a shadow of the sister he once knew. She turned and began to walk away, her steps deliberate and unyielding.
"Kagome, we have to—" Percy's voice faltered as he realized Kagome wasn't by his side. He turned to see her, her eyes clouded and distant, the same glaze that had overtaken Cassandra's gaze now darkening her own.
"Kagome?" he whispered, a note of desperation creeping into his voice.
But she didn't answer. Her face was expressionless as she stepped away from the group, her movements eerily calm. Vax lunged forward, trying to reach her, but she was already walking toward the exit, following Cassandra in a trance-like state.
"Kagome!" Percy shouted, his hands gripping the bars as he tried to break free. "Kagome, stop!"
Her steps faltered for a moment at the sound of his voice, and he saw a flicker of recognition in her eyes. But the Briarwoods' charm held firm, and she continued walking, disappearing down the corridor with Cassandra.
The weight of her absence settled over the room like a suffocating blanket, and Percy's heart sank, a mixture of fear and rage twisting within him. They had taken his sister, and now they were trying to take Kagome from him, too.
"They've charmed them both," Vex muttered, her voice grim as she examined the room. "We're trapped. We need to find a way out—fast."
Percy clenched his fists, his gaze fixed on the exit where Kagome had disappeared. He felt the demon within him stir again, the familiar pull of darkness, urging him to let it loose, to unleash everything he had against the Briarwoods. But Kagome's voice lingered in his mind, her steady hand on his shoulder, grounding him even in her absence.
"We'll get her back," he murmured, more to himself than to anyone else. "And Cassandra, too. I swear it."
Vax placed a reassuring hand on Percy's shoulder. "We will. We're not leaving without them."
They scoured the chamber for any means of escape, their movements quick but calculated. They could hear faint footsteps echoing down the corridor, the sound of the Briarwoods' influence leading Kagome and Cassandra farther away with each passing moment.
Vex's voice cut through the tension, sharp and determined. "There's a mechanism here, hidden beneath these stones. It should release the grate if we can figure out how to trigger it."
Percy knelt beside her, his hands working to pry open the panel she'd found. As they worked, he focused on his resolve, holding onto the thought of Kagome's voice, her touch, her steady presence that had been his lifeline in his darkest moments.
The grate finally lifted with a grating clang, and they surged forward, racing through the twisting corridors in pursuit of Kagome and Cassandra. The dungeon seemed to stretch on endlessly, each turn pulling them farther into the castle's dark heart.
As they ran, Percy's mind was a whirlwind of emotions—fear for his sister, a gnawing panic for Kagome, and the ever-present pull of vengeance. The demon within him whispered insidiously, urging him to let go, to give in to the darkness and unleash his fury. But he held firm, clinging to the promise he'd made, both to himself and to Kagome.
At last, they came upon a grand staircase, leading up toward the heart of the castle. And there, at the top, silhouetted against the dim light, he saw the figures of Cassandra and Kagome, standing side by side, their faces blank, as if caught in a trance.
Percy's heart clenched as he looked at Kagome, her expression so distant, so devoid of the warmth and fire he knew. She had always been his light, his anchor, and seeing her like this, stripped of her spirit, was a pain deeper than anything he'd felt before.
"Kagome!" he called, his voice thick with desperation.
For a moment, her gaze flickered, her eyes meeting his with a flash of recognition. But the spell held strong, pulling her away once more. She turned, disappearing into the shadows with Cassandra, leaving Percy and the others standing at the foot of the stairs.
Vax gripped Percy's shoulder, grounding him. "We're getting them back, Percy. Whatever it takes."
Percy nodded, his jaw set with grim determination. They would face the Briarwoods, confront the darkness that had poisoned Whitestone, and he would do everything in his power to bring Kagome and Cassandra back—even if it meant facing the very demons within him.
And as they ascended the staircase, their resolve unwavering, Percy made a silent vow to himself: he would save them both, or die trying.
