It no longer had a face. My solar mace tore through its metal headgear and exploded within it, just enough to damage its core and kill it. My peace didn't stay for long though. With hardly a moments notice, many bullets formed from pure energy whizzed past, some hitting my armor.
I drew my broadsword. It could be more closely classified as a Zweihander, such a long and ornate sword. I found the same as my armor. Attached to my cold, dead hand. Metal red and blue roses decorated the hilt and crossguard. Its blade made for fuction over fashion, with few engravings.
My legs moved swiftly. It's as expected for a Titan that has lived so long. Augmenting my body with the light second nature now. I cut through several goblins in a single swing, solar energy flaring out from my sword. Their regular small arms fire had no effect on my armor. There is nothing quite as dangerous as an aged lightbearer who has ample access to the Traveler's light. As I killed more of the robotic Vex, I could feel the reserves of light within me fill.
A Minotuar's large frame crashed through the wall next to me. A ball of void energy in its hand blasted me back. Despite my armor holding strong, such a punch definitely hurt. It took but a moment to regain my bearings. The Vex stared at me, an eight foot tall frame standing unmoving. Its single, glowing, mechanical red eye staring me down. "Are ya just goin to stand there?" A deep voice filled with vibrato came from my throat. It had been so long since I'd spoken that my Irish accent almost shocked me.
It stood still, and I swear that its eye was judging me. It moved quickly and suddenly, but I was faster. Twin firery maces took form in my hands as I ran to meet the metal monstrosity. I moved my arms in a scissor motion, intent on blasting the damn thing off into the atmosphere. However, my eyes widened as it rose its arms to block. The reaction was instant. Ice that had been forming on the cold steel flash melted into steam. The arms didn't fare much better, getting hit with an explosive mace.
The issue with Vex is that they're so damn defiant. Missing both its arms, it threw its body onto me. Even with my immense strength, the surprise brought me to my back. I could hear several more violent cracks in the air as more arrived. This minotaur on top of me was about receive a warm surprise. Solar energy blasted out from me like a bonfire. My armor burst into flames as my new, shortly lived rival burned into ash. Several more stood around me, along with an ancient looking Hydra stood around me.
With my body over flowing with light and warmth, their bullets couldn't even touch me. The light gathered below my legs and propelled me forward, and like a ram, I slammed into the Hydra. It survived the first hit, and was flung backwards. The lack of friction was its down fall as it was pinned into the wall. Before I could get to the Hydra, an equally old, massive minitaur wrapped its arms around me.
"Gelum! Behind you, the hydra is beginning to self destruct!" Dreamer screamed at over our mental link, the Hydra glowing behind me. The Minotaur, still holding me, moved towards the Hydra. With a final expolsion of light from my body killed the Minotaur, but it didn't stop the Hydra's explosion. All went black.
"Gelum, your Solar Plate killed the remaining Vex with that last expolsion. Your body was entirely disintegrated," Dreamer's words barely registered in my mind. The temporary black void of death had become familiar to me over the years.
"Fucken hell... We can't go half a day without getting assaulted on this traveler forsaken glacier!" When I was first risen, we stayed low. Fights happened rarely, yet almost always ended in my death. Suffice to say, I had not yet gained the experience I have today.
"From what we know from Clovis's notes, Europa was likely the insersion point for the Vex into the Solar Sys-"
I cut him off quickly, "Oh, silence, smart-ass."
"One of these days, You're going to die here, and I'll wait until I'm back in the Last City to res you." The smugness in his voice was clear. Despite being a genius battle tactician, I could never keep up with Dreamer in a battle of witty banter.
"You're small," was my clever reply. We chuckled amicably, far beyond used to eachother's presence. If i had a sibling in another universe, it would have been Dreamer. "Seriously now, I think this expedition will bear no more fruit. Let's return to Earth."
"Alright Mister Bossman, it'll take me a few moments to call our jumpship back," My standard issue Minerva class jump ship soared into view, weaving between the tall skyscrapers of this ruined Europan city. It slowly came to a stop above me, and I soon felt the strong tug of a transmat bringing me in.
"It's nice to finally be back inside someplace familiar. Turn on the heater while you're warming the engines, too. I'm fucken freezing," despite being a master of Solar manipulation, only being second to the leader of Mercurian Sunbreakers, there's a chill that you can never get rid of here. Europa is just one of those places that could never feel like home, no matter how much time you spend here. I settled into the pilot's seat of the large ship. Minerva had served me well over the last 100 odd years.
"Already on it, Gelum. Also, I notice that you didn't use any stasis in that fight. I thought you wanted more practice with it," Dreamer's question was reasonable. In the years we stayed here before managing to get Earth, we found plenty of Clovis Bray's notebooks. We were both bored, so we researched them in between training my light. That's the problem with this newest generation of Guardians. They spend 30 minutes getting used to their new powers, and then never train them to the next level. All they care about is new guns and looking cool. Then again, I had something of a headstart in the latter. That reason is also why they're all so worried about money. I've bought three peices of equipment in my tenure as a Guardian. My ship, a Pribina-D handcannon, and a Maestro-46 sniper rifle. I don't spend glimmer, and being a very long lived lightbear, combined with regularly leading high-risk mission has caused me to become one of the richest Guardian's in the city. I might buy a sniper from that new little foundry thats popped up after the Red War. Veist, or Vesper. Something with a V. And the Red War. That's somthing to be thought about a differen-
"GELUM! Stop thinking for a moment, there are several anti-air guns pointed right at us!" Dreamer's yell nearly knocked me from the pilot's seat. We were halfway out of the atmosphere by the time we were attacked
"Fallen or Vex?" A concentrated beam of red energy whizzed by my right wing and answered my question for me. "Well, that's new."
"FtL engine charging, we'll be headin toward's Earth in just a few seconds. Just dodge and weave, Gelum!" Unfortunately, the Minerva was definitely not a racer ship. Though maneuverable for its size, it was still a massive target. The engines worked double time, trying to get us as far away from the guns on the ground. "Engaging FtL drive, we're almost gone!"
I sighed a breath of relief, I was worried that the millions of glimmer I had stored in my ship would be lost. That relief was short lived, however. A beam hit directly where our FtL drive sat in the Minerva. This was usually a death sentence. A damaged drive could shatter the ship as it tried to send you flying across space at hundreds of times the speed of light. Nothing would survive, including a guardian and their ghost. A damaged FtL drive wasn't a common accident, but it was one with a 100 percent lethality rate.
"Fuck! Why aren't we dead yet?" To both of our surprise, we were soaring through a beam of light. "It still worked, we lived through a broken Drive!"
"Yes, we survived, but its certain that were knocked off course. I suppose we'll see where this takes us." Dreamer's point was not an inspiring one. An FtL jump couldn't be disengaged until it reached it's locked destination. If we were lucky, it'd stop at Earth. Otherwise, next to anywhere in the Milky Way was fair game.
"We're not going back to Earth, seein how long this one is takin," my tone was somber. Ships sometimes disappeared. It was the risk of a fast response time. Few returned, barely able to latch onto an old radio signal and locate Earth once more. Hopefully we'll still end up only a few lightyears from the Sol system.
AN: I'm actually kind of impressed by determination of some people to try to fuck with FF writers. Its kinda funny, too. Anyway, I have no idea when my next chapter will be done, I'm about to get very, very busy. Could anywhere from next week to next year.
