It was now approaching the middle of summer on the Island of Sodor, and some most stirring events had recently unfolded. After thirty years since he had last been seen, Gareth, formerly the Spiteful Brakevan had crossed paths with Donald and Douglas once more, sparking off a final standoff between him and the Caledonian Twins. Mere hours later, Donald and Douglas found themselves at Tidmouth Hault where Dilly spent her final living moments with her beloved Donald, then passed away on his running plate after three weeks of her declining health. Only the day after that, Douglas noticed a new engine in chartreuse yellow undergoing test runs at Arlesburgh West, and thought that Jock would be a good name for him, regarding the engines from the Highland Jocks in Scotland. Then after a rescue on Gordon's Hill, Donald, Douglas and Gareth had finally come clean and started over again.

Over the days that followed, new beginnings had now been set in motion. With regard to the challenges Dilly's passing had brought forth, Donald now had a brand-new livery of Caledonian Blue, just like all the other Caledonian engines used to be, save for Douglas maintaining his black livery with a few added touch-ups. Donald now felt like a new engine, and the Little Western felt like a whole new place. He often thought of Dilly and all the years she had been with him. Now those years were completed, and life would go on in a different way. Whenever Donald stopped at Tidmouth Hault Station, he would look beyond the platform to see Dilly's nest still sitting there, and a lump would come into his throat. No one had ever had such a friend in any pet as Dilly – so affectionate, so loyal and so very devoted right to the very end.

On the other buffer, new beginnings would soon start for two others on the Island, both of whom were much, much more anticipated. Over the past few days, Jock had been undergoing performance tests in the yards at Arlesburgh West, as he had yet to be officially unveiled for active service. To this effect, the Small Controller had been making arrangements for an unveiling ceremony to commission his new engine for service, rather like Bert's re-introduction in his new shape shortly before St. Patrick's Day.

Eventually, after a good few days of consistently well-made progress, Jock had completed his final performance test in the yards, just as the station clock struck 2:00 p.m. The Small Controller was most impressed on how well his new engine's tests had gone, and the time was just about ready to be set.

"Very good, Jock," said the Small Controller. "Your performance with each test has been most impeccable. I'd say you're just about ready."

"Thank you, Mr. Duncan," Jock replied. "I really feel as though I can't wait too much longer. Do you think I'm ready enough to start working along this line?"

"Hmm…you know, Jock…to that, I'd say…what a splendid idea," the Small Controller smiled. "I've been arranging for you to be given an unveiling ceremony for the past several days now, and I think everything is just about in order. The only thing remaining, is when to hold the big event."

"Well, whenever that may be, I look forward to it, sir," Jock smiled.

The Small Controller patted Jock's boiler with a smile, then headed back to the station's office and looked through his plans once more.

"So, there we have it," he said to himself. "Yes. This shall make a most impressive unveiling…just so long as it calibrates fairly enough with our other very fine friend…goodness me…"

Meanwhile, just beyond Crovan's Gate Station, dwelling inside the Steamworks, was the very fine friend the Small Controller had been thinking about, as were many others on Sodor. While Jock's unveiling would indeed be special, the Steamworks had something even bigger and much more exciting for the whole Island to anticipate. Ever since he had been rediscovered and brought to Sodor around four months ago, Bloomer had been kept under constant supervision and constant work to be restored and reinstated to railway service after sitting for almost ninety years in his shed to be preserved and kept safe whilst all the others of his class were withdrawn, scrapped and melted down.

In the time that passed since, Sandy had moved in at the Steamworks, working alongside Victor and Kevin and doing whatever she could to help with Bloomer's restoration herself. Hour by hour, day by day, the workmen had made consistent progress toward the end-goal, with some of the engines coming and going to visit the LNWR Class Engine whenever they had the time. Throughout these four long months, Sodor's very own Bloomer had been dealt a great amount of tender-loving care to get him back in business. Now, at long-last, the time was drawing near, and as Bloomer sat on the Steamworks turntable, he had a powerful feeling growing in his heart as he looked outside toward the line. For quite a while, he hadn't spoken much, once again contemplating the whole new age of railroading that awaited him after his previous age with all his fellow Bloomer engines. As he recalled mentioning to Duke, it was like being reborn again to a whole new world he had never seen before, and he could only imagine what experiences would be awaiting him.

"My goodness me," he murmured to himself. "The time is now nigh…"

Sandy rolled up and looked toward her Aristocratic friend, sensing he was in deep thought. Victor and Kevin came alongside her as well.

"How do you feel, my friend?" Victor asked Bloomer. "Excited to start your new life on Sodor?"

"Oh, Victor. Four months I've been here, waiting and wondering about everything that lies ahead," said Bloomer. "And yet despite all the thought and curiosity that has occupied me ever since, somehow…I still don't feel quite prepared for a whole new age of railways…I've been away for so, so long, huddled away in that shed, and now…to enter a completely different world of railways…"

"Come now, Bloomer. You shouldn't feel unprepared for anything," said Victor. "I can assure you, it's a most wonderful railway out there."

"Oh, yes, Bloomer," Sandy added. "All the time I spent helping the Little Western repair its Branch Line where Diesel saved Duck and his Slip Coaches, it was very fulfilling for me to have helped out as much as I did."

"And that's not even a quarter of the whole Island's railway," said Kevin. "You have a whole island to explore, enjoy and work on with so many wonderful engines. They'll all help you fit in and adapt however you need."

"I know, lads, and Sandy. Perhaps I shouldn't be thinking too far ahead," Bloomer replied. "I really do look forward to returning to service…and of course, being Sodor's very own Bloomer…"

Victor, Kevin and Sandy smiled as Bloomer looked outside again. Then just a minute later, the silence broke again.

"That's a wrap, mates," came a man's voice. "Boys…our work here is now complete."

"I think he's got it!" came several other voices together.

Suddenly, Bloomer and the Steamworks Team went rather still, all their hearts skipping a beat as they looked to each other. Then they looked and saw the workmen and the Steamworks Manager all standing together with proud smiles.

"What did you just say, chaps?" Bloomer asked. "Do my ears deceive me…or did I hear you say…I'm…?"

The Steamworks Manager walked forward and held the LNWR Engine's bufferbeam. All was quiet for a moment. Then the Manager spoke.

"Bloomer…it is our duty…it is our privilege, and our honour to report to you, that after four long months of continuous, consistent efforts on all our accounts…you restoration is now, at long last…complete!"

There it was. The words had been spoken, and the great moment had arrived. To what he just heard, Bloomer's eyes widened ever-so slightly as his heart pounded in his boiler. His mouth opened into a small but genuine gape as he held his voice inside. Sandy's eyes popped open too, and Victor and Kevin froze where they were. Then it came.

"Well, WELL!" Bloomer cried with shock and delight. "By George and King Edward! It…it's done!"

"Ohh! Oh, my! Wow! Brilliant! It's come!" Sandy shook and squeaked with bubbling excitement.

"Your engine, boiler, sprockets, firebox, the whole shebang, Bloomer," said the head workman. "It's all set and ready to put steam back into your core once the time is set."

Bloomer started taking deep, strong breaths as he looked outside again, not sure exactly what to say. He was now fit to head out there, and he couldn't wait to see the time come. Despite his overwhelming thoughts beforehand, this was a moment in his life he had long been waiting for.

"Well, my friend," said Victor. "It has been a very long, very busy process here. Now, just a few more things to be done here, then at long-last, you'll be really useful again."

"Ooh, goodness!" Sandy squeaked. "Where has all the time gone? Has it really been four months since he and I came here?"

"Indeed it has been, Sandy," said Victor. "And you, Bloomer. How are you feeling, my friend?"

Bloomer took one more deep breath and smiled from buffer to buffer.

"I really cannot thank you enough, Victor. Or Kevin, or Sandy, or any of you very good chaps who have done everything to bring me to this point. I am eternally grateful to what all you have done for me since the start. Four long months I've been here, with this restoration proceeding slowly, but steadily and usefully…now, in just a short while…I'll be back. It's most remarkable."

"It has been a great pleasure putting you back to rights, Bloomer," said Victor. "And now, I think perhaps we should see if we could bring a few guests here to see you enter your latest phase."

Bloomer looked just in time to see Victor wink. He knew right away who these guests would be.

"Well, my good chap," said Bloomer. "By all means, let us see if they can come."

"Of course we shall," the Steamworks Manager noted as he headed for the telephone. "I'll get right to it…"

At Knapford Station, at this given moment, the Fat Controller was in his office, checking the timetable's progress. Everything seemed to be in the right order and so he looked around his office again. Then he turned his attention to what was hanging on the wall, and went quite still. There was the very portrait of an LNWR Bloomer Class Tender Engine he had looked at on the very night Gordon's axles ran hot and Rebecca bared him most romantic company by the fire in the Steamworks. The Fat Controller stood up and walked closer to the wall, looking at that portrait more intently as he reflected on what had come to pass. Only four months ago he and Lady Hatt had taken their two-week holiday at the Portpatrick Hotel, and found this very engine class in Wigtownshire Joint Goods Yards in that very shed where he had been kept for so, so long. Now, after so much hard work done on Sodor's very own Bloomer, the time for his return was nigh.

"Goodness me," the Fat Controller said to himself. "This is going to be a most immense ceremony…so much to arrange and plan for such a spectacle as him!"

Just then, the telephone rang. The Fat Controller answered at once, suddenly feeling a creeping tremble in his heart.

"Hello?"

It was the Steamworks Manager.

"Sir Topham. I request that you and Sir Robert come to the Steamworks at once. I have most jubilating news."

The Fat Controller suddenly felt his knees begin to quake. He listened for a few moments as the Steamworks Manager spoke further. Then, when he heard the news for himself, the Fat Controller froze where he was, then dropped the telephone. It clattered loudly on his desk, but he stayed where he was for a moment longer. The Manager's voice could still be heard through the phone.

"What was that? …Sir? Are you there, sir? Central? Central, we've been cut off! Hello! Sir Topham! Come in!"

The Fat Controller shook himself out of it and picked up the phone again.

"Oh! Begging your pardon, my good fellow. I…I just had to regain myself. Now, then…MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS! Is it true?!"

"Yes, sir. He's all ready," said the Manager. "Just one or two more things to do, and I'd say he'll be ready. So…will you and Sir Robert come along?"

The Fat Controller smiled from ear to ear. He had it all worked out.

"Oh, yes!" he said. "I will come along! I shall inform the others, and we'll be right over. Thank you, my good fellow."

Then the Fat Controller hung up, then picked up again and started dialing the next number.

At Ulfstead Castle, Glynn, Stephen and Millie were all busy throughout the grounds. They too had been wondering when Bloomer would be all set to work with them, and they all had a good feeling the time was near. Millie in particular was wondering a fair bit how it would all turn out. She had been kept on maintenance work for a fair while since her accident with the weedkiller, and she had met Bloomer already while she was waiting for repair.

"So very close to moving in with us, he is," she thought to herself. "That will be very lovely indeed…"

At this moment, Sir Robert was inside the castle checking over his own timetable, and wondering about Bloomer. His funding for the restoration over the past four months had been used most wisely and efficiently, and he too knew it could be any time now. Then suddenly, his telephone began to ring as well. In that very instant, a tingle of electricity flashed down his spine. Could it be? With quite a jump, he hurried to the phone and answered at once.

"Hello?"

"Sir Robert! Oh, goodness! Big news! The time has come at last!" came the Fat Controller's voice.

"Calm yourself, Sir Topham. What big news is this?" Sir Robert asked, then listened. "Yes…Bloomer…? He's…he's fully restored?! Ohh! Goodness! By my beard! Is he really ready?!"

"Restoration complete, Sir Robert," said the Fat Controller. "The Steamworks Manager just told me, and he's asked that we come along to see for ourselves. I'll be coming along in Winston soon to pick you up."

"Very good, Sir Topham!" said Sir Robert. "Of course, we MUST see him! I'll be waiting for you and Winston! See you very soon!"

Sir Robert then hung up as he smiled from ear to ear. Then another idea came to him as he picked up the phone again and started dialing another number.

At Arlesburgh West Station, the Small Controller was writing down a few more plans regarding Jock's pending ceremony when his telephone started ringing too and he answered right away.

"Hello? Ahh, Sir Robert," he said, then listened. "Yes…what's that…? At the Steamworks? Oh, goodness! Well, then. I think I'd best come along too! I'll meet you and Sir Topham there."

With that, the Small Controller hung up and gave quite a jump as he ran out of the office to his car, then set off down the road for the Steamworks.

Soon, the Fat Controller was hurrying along the line in Winston for Ulfstead Castle. The excitement he now felt was unlike anything he could recall before as he couldn't wait to see Bloomer now. It wasn't long before he arrived at the castle and rolled right through the gates. As he looked toward the platform, Sir Robert was waiting with a beaming smile.

"Hop in, Sir Robert," said the Fat Controller. "The time has finally come, and he awaits us both."

"Not just us, Sir Topham," said Sir Robert. "I've just told Mr. Duncan the news, and he'll be there too."

"Excellent move, Sir Robert," said the Fat Controller. "And just before I left, I've called a few others, you see…"

He leaned in and whispered to Sir Robert, who nodded with intrigue.

"Very good, Sir Topham," he said. "Most excellent indeed. Well now. Shall we?"

"What are we waiting for?" the Fat Controller smiled as he and Sir Robert headed off in Winston again, then down the Main Line.

Further up the line, Thomas was busy with a small goods train when he suddenly heard Winston's horn from behind. Then Thomas saw him rolling alongside with the Fat Controller and Sir Robert inside.

"Sir Topham Hatt? Sir Robert? Where are you two going?" Thomas asked.

"No time to explain now, Thomas," Sir Robert said eagerly. "Just wait and see!"

And off Winston hurried down the line. Thomas wondered what this could mean, then suddenly, he smiled from buffer to buffer as he carried on with his work. He had a very good feeling about all this, and soon the rest of the Island would too…

At the Steamworks, Bloomer was waiting for the guests to arrive, as were Victor, Kevin and Sandy.

"Hmm. Wherever could our guests be? And whom, I wonder?" Bloomer asked.

"You'll see soon enough, Bloomer," said the Steamworks Manager. "I'd like them all to see what's coming for you next."

"Next, you say? Well…" Bloomer wondered.

Then sure enough, there came the distant sound of two cars outside. Bloomer looked and saw Winston and another car stop outside the Steamworks. From Winston, out stepped the Fat Controller and Sir Robert. Then from the other car, out stepped the Small Controller, who came up to the Fat Controller and shook his hand. Then all three men came walking inside the Steamworks and looked up with proud smiles. Bloomer smiled just as proudly as he knew they had now heard the wonderful news themselves.

"Well! Hello to you all, my good gentlemen," Bloomer greeted warmly. "Are the flowers blooming along Sodor's Railways?"

"They certainly are, my very dear friend," the Fat Controller said proudly. "Good day, Bloomer. All three of us have heard it all. After these four long months of dedication and hard work on the Steamworks' account, you've waited, you've wondered, and now at last the time can be set."

"Yes. A time and occasion which only an engine such as you could fully appreciate," said Sir Robert. "A time of jubilation, this is, Bloomer, as your restoration is now finally completed. I am truly most happy to see the day come at last!"

"As am I, my good chaps," said Bloomer. "I've been waiting for this moment for so very long, and even now, I really don't know exactly what to feel. Excited, nervous, thrilled…perhaps all of them at once, or maybe something else entirely?"

"We know just how you feel, Bloomer," said the Fat Controller. "Everything out there is indeed going to be an entirely new world of railways for you, but you mustn't be worried now. This is a time for you to be happy and be proud."

"That's right, my friend," Victor added. "And now, with your restoration complete, I think the time has to apply the final few touches for your big day."

Bloomer and the three controllers saw Victor wink to the Steamworks Manager, who nodded back at once.

"Yes, indeed there is, Victor," he replied. "And so, gentlemen. Now that you're all here, we can now proceed…with Bloomer's new look."

"New look?" Bloomer perked up curiously. "Do you mean to say…?"

"We've spent all these four months inspecting, repairing, greasing, polishing and well and truly oiling you wherever needed, Bloomer. There's just one vital thing remaining, and now, all of us have the honour of seeing it come to life. Sir Topham?"

"Ahh, yes. Another most important moment we've been waiting for," said the Fat Controller. "You see, Bloomer, shortly after you came here to be restored, I've kept one particular arrangement under wraps for you…until today."

"And what is that, Sir Topham?" Bloomer asked.

"Well, you've had that black livery for as long as any age of railways could remember, way back when you and all the other Bloomers still roamed the rails, and for all the long decades you remained in that shed. Now, with your recommissioning to service within arm's reach, I decided that you deserve something truly special. None other than a brand-new, fresh and handsome coat of paint."

Bloomer beamed with pride.

"Oh, yes, sir. I would be most delighted to look divine and presentable for your Railway and others on this island too. So, what colour shall I be?"

"Well, as I'd mentioned when Lady Hatt and I found you at Wigtownshire Yards, this colour was mainly a rumour and inner thought to many…but here and now, I propose we repaint you…in the long-thought fictious, yet lovely…vermillion red livery."

Bloomer's eyebrows raised with great interest, while Victor, Kevin and Sandy hummed with intrigue.

"Vermillion red livery!" Sir Robert exclaimed. "What a marvellous choice! Just the colour for Sodor's very own Bloomer!"

"Then delay not," said the Steamworks Manager. "Over to you, boys."

"Right away. For Sodor's Very Own Bloomer."

The three workmen and the Steamworks Team all watched and grinned as the workmen got straight to work. They fetched their tools, gathered around Bloomer, then proceeded to scrape off his black livery. Bloomer tensed up just a little as he hadn't had a repaint for so many decades, but quickly got used to it. Soon he was scraped down to his bare form. Then he looked and watched as the first paint can opened. But when he saw the colour inside, he suddenly felt unsure.

"Say. Pardon me, chaps…but that's pink paint right there."

"It is, Bloomer," said the Fat Controller. "But no need to be skittish on that. It's just an undercoat. It protects the main coat from water and other damage, you see?"

"Hmm. I see," said Bloomer. "Alright then. Do carry on, please."

Just as it was for every engine's repaint, the pink undercoat creased along Bloomer's tender, then all along his body until he was completely covered in bright pink paint. After a while, the undercoat was well set on his body. Then the painters opened the next paint can and showed it to Bloomer.

"Ahh…there it is," he grinned impressively.

All three controllers beamed eagerly, while Victor, Kevin and Sandy held their breath. At last the moment had arrived for Bloomer to be repainted in LNWR vermilion red livery, rather like many others of his class were rumoured to be painted. Everyone had been waiting a long time for this moment, and they all continued to watch as the painters got to it. Steadily and surely, the vermillion red paint creased along Bloomer's body, all while he looked back and around himself, truly proud and happy to see it all happen. With every brush's stroke, Bloomer seemed to look more and more alive.

At last, the final stroke of paint was applied, and just as Victor came alongside with the large mirror on the flatbed, the workmen stood back to gaze at the final result. The Fat Controller, Sir Robert, the Small Controller, Victor, Kevin and Sandy all looked and smiled broadly. Bloomer then looked into the mirror and saw it all for himself. There he was with his entire body now a beautiful vermillion red livery shining brightly with his dome, safety valve, funnel and rivets all around him. It was absolutely perfect.

"There it is, gentlemen," said the Fat Controller. "The vermillion red livery itself! Well, Bloomer? What do you think?"

Bloomer stared into the mirror for a few moments more before turning his eyes to the Fat Controller.

"What do I think, you say? Why, it's the very, VERY best I've ever looked! All my fellow Bloomers from those bygone ages were either Brunswick Green, Blackberry Black or dark plum red. For all the speculation and rumours of this vermillion red, I never saw anything of the sort from any of my fellow siblings…but now, to see my very own self in this very colour…there's no greater gift I could have asked for!"

"Wow! Brilliant!" Sandy squeaked. "You look absolutely stunning, Bloomer!"

"Impressive. Very impressive. Now, now," said Sir Robert. "All the guests at the ceremony are going to be very pleased with this."

"That they will. Now, Bloomer," said the Fat Controller as he checked his watch. "There are just two more little things I think need doing before your preparations here is absolutely finished."

Bloomer opened his mouth to ask just what, but before he could speak, the honk of a bus could be heard outside. Bertie had stopped along the road just ahead from the Steamworks to let off a few certain gentlemen.

"Ah. There's Bertie now. Impeccable timing," said the Fat Controller. "They're here, Bloomer."

"They? Who's they?" Sir Robert asked.

"We're about to find out," said the Small Controller.

Everyone watched and waited. Then two other men came walking inside the Steamworks, both wearing blue jackets and pants, just as all the other engines' crews wore every day. They looked up toward Bloomer and both nodded with duty. Then they nodded to the Fat Controller, who nodded right back.

"Well. Who are these two very fine men, may I ask?" said Bloomer.

"I have told these two all about you, Bloomer," said the Fat Controller. "They've been waiting for the day to come, and now it has. Seeing as you said farewell to your previous driver and fireman all those ages ago, it's only perfectly appropriate that you be given a new crew. Say hello to your new driver and fireman. Eric Utterthwaite and Craig Pegden."

Bloomer looked and saw both men walk right up and hold his buffer-beam.

"Why, hello, Bloomer," said Eric. "We have heard all about you and your ongoing restoration. Now you're just about ready."

"We've been following the news bit by bit as your progress kept on," said Craig. "Here today, it is a true honour and gift to be the crew of Sodor's very own Bloomer, Bloomer. Will you have us?"

"Why, of course I shall," Bloomer smiled. "I know my former crew would be very pleased to have seen this day, and I look forward to working with you both."

"As do we, Bloomer," Eric and Craig said together.

"Now, Sir Topham," said Bloomer. "May I ask what the final bit of my preparation is to be?"

"Well, Bloomer. It's a small thing…but it's also something you mentioned back when the Steam Team first ever visited you."

"Is it, now? What may that be?" Bloomer asked.

"Well, from what I came to hear shortly after my holiday with Jane, I seem to recall hearing how you made the odd mention…that perhaps your sideburns could do with a little trim after all these years."

Bloomer remembered at once with a nod. "I indeed did say that, and I don't see why not now. But…how?"

"Here's how, Bloomer," the Fat Controller replied as he turned toward the Steamworks entrance, then gave a gesture.

Bloomer looked again, then saw a young barber walking in, wearing a white jacket and carrying a small case full of barber tools.

"Hello and greetings, Bloomer," said the barber. "Sir Topham's brought me up to speed, and I believe we have the matter of a small trim to give you? No need for any close shaves like Duck's, of course. Pardon me for saying."

"Close shave for Duck? Whatever do you mean?" Bloomer asked, having not heard this aspect of Duck's life for himself.

"Oh. Well, around thirty years ago, Duck was being chased by runaway trucks and veered away from a passenger train before he crashed through a barber shop's wall," the barber explained. "That barber crossly lathered Duck's face in shaving soap before he heard Duck was being heroic. A very close shave, so they said, and so he washed Duck's face clean. As for my business here, I've apprenticed for that barber for a few years recently. Now, since the barber there retired, I've been running the shop and shaving customers just as he did throughout his life. Sir Topham Hatt gave me a call shortly after hearing of your restoration, and asked if I would like the honour of giving you a little touch-up for your big day."

"Really? Why, thank you, sweetheart," said Bloomer. "The honour is yours to take and to treasure. I don't think anything like this has happened with an engine before."

"No, Bloomer, I don't think it has," the Fat Controller chuckled. "So, are you ready now?"

Bloomer turned to the barber and winked, to which he walked right up and got on his running plate.

"What you need is a trim," said the barber. "A nice, handsome trim."

"Well, then. Let's not delay," said Bloomer. "Do what you shall, sweetheart, and let's see how I look for when I return to the rails."

With a dutiful nod, the barber got right to it as he drew a comb from his case and began straightening out Bloomer's sideburns. Bloomer watched with interest, as did the three controllers, and Victor, Kevin and Sandy. After a few minutes, Bloomer's sideburns were fairly straightened out. Then the barber placed the comb just under a quarter of an inch beneath Bloomer's sideburns, then drew a pair of scissors and carefully started trimming his sideburns. Bit by bit, small fragments of hair gathered on Bloomer's running plate. Bloomer watched and waited as the trimming went on for about twenty minutes. As everyone watched and waited, the Fat Controller couldn't help but quietly whistle the tune of "The Barber of Seville" to pass the time. Bloomer took note of the tune and waited contently as the trimming went on.

Eventually, the trimming stopped. Bloomer looked and saw the barber withdraw his scissors and comb. He then drew a small brush and lightly dusted Bloomer's face, then dusted the hairs off his running plate. Then he drew a hand mirror and held it up.

"There you are, my friend," said the barber. "Take a look and see."

Bloomer looked into the hand mirror and smiled most admirably. His sideburns still reached down the sides of his cheeks the same way, but they now seemed cleaner and straighter, which in effect made him seem younger and full of life again. Bloomer felt it was more than worth it as he smiled again.

"Why, thank you, good sir," he said proudly. "I think I'm quite ready for another age of Railroading."

"You certainly are now, Bloomer," said Sir Robert. "Very handsome, and distinguished too."

"Well, now. That's that," said the Fat Controller. "Now at last, our plans can be put forth and into action."

"Plans, Sir Topham?" the Small Controller asked, quietly taking notice.

"Why, of course, Mr. Duncan. The time has now come to make ready to reintroduce Bloomer and recommission him for active railway service once again."

"You mean to say a ceremony for me, Sir Topham?" Bloomer asked.

"Precisely. The time is very close now, Bloomer," said the Fat Controller. "A time hold your ceremony for everyone to see. For a fair while now, Sir Robert and I have had it all worked out. On the big day, the two of us had it planned that you be unveiled to all our guests at Crovan's Gate Station."

"Yes, that's right, Bloomer," said Sir Robert. "Bertram and I shall make our speeches, then you can give a speech of your own. Then once you are hereby christened and commissioned, we'll have you and another engine take the guests on a special tour of the Main Line together."

Bloomer beamed with a steady smile. He really liked the sound of this. In spite of his reservations concerning overly enthused crowds, he wouldn't pass up his own unveiling, ever. As for the Small Controller, he had heard everything and was now pondering to himself, given Jock's newfound progress.

"Hmm…so that's the plan for Bloomer, is it?" he noted, making everyone look to him. "Well, now…that is something to consider…because Jock has only recently completed his final test, and now he too is awaiting to be commissioned himself."

"Jock? Who's Jock, sir?" Bloomer asked.

"He's my latest addition amongst my small engines, Bloomer," said the Small Controller. "He just had his last performance test this morning, and now he's waiting for a big day of his own, rather like yours."

"Is that right, Mr. Duncan?" said the Fat Controller. "Do you mean to say you've been planning a ceremony for Jock?"

"Yes, Bertram. I have," said the Small Controller.

"Hmm. I see," said the Fat Controller. "Well, naturally, I had it planned to invite all the island's railway controllers to attend Bloomer's ceremony…though, I can also assume that you, Mr. Duncan, have plans to do the same for Jock's ceremony."

"That's right, Sir Topham. I had the very same thought to invite guests and the other controllers myself…including you and Sir Robert, of course."

"Well, then. How shall this be worked out in a timely and engaging manner?" the Fat Controller wondered. "Robert? What do you think?"

Sir Robert pondered both controllers' plans and thought for a moment. Then it came to him as he beamed quite a smile.

"Gentlemen…you've both just given me a splendid idea. I've had part of my proposition planned for a while, but now I see a great opportunity for something even grander."

"And what would that be, Sir Robert?" the Small Controller asked.

Sir Robert smiled and winked to Bloomer as he gestured both controllers to come in close as he held both their shoulders.

"Here it is, gentlemen. As soon as he is ready to put steam back into his boiler…Bloomer's unveiling shall happen first, the day after tomorrow, first thing in the morning at Crovan's Gate. Then…once we break out the champagne, he and his fellow engine shall haul the special train from Crovan's Gate to Arlesburgh West…for Jock's official ceremony, where we shall break out the champagne for him too. Thus both our newly unveiled engines shall be commissioned for service on the same day. What say you, gentlemen?"

Sir Topham Hatt and Mr. Duncan heard everything that had just been spoken. They silently considered for a moment or two, while Bloomer and Sandy waited for the answer. Then both controllers smiled from ear to ear as they looked again.

"Sir Robert Norramby. Earl of Ulfstead Castle," said the Fat Controller. "We say unto this…what a splendid, marvelous idea!"

"Spectacular and remarkable," added the Small Controller. "Just the way it could be done best. This will make a most splendid ceremony indeed."

"Oh, that it will, gentlemen," said Sir Robert. "And think of many guests we'll have! Bloomer's restoration ensures that many people will want to see him and be part of his very first train after nearly ninety years of his class seemingly being extinct...followed by Mr. Duncan's brand-new engine being unveiled to them as well."

"Now all that remains is who shall accompany him for the ceremony," said the Fat Controller. "You see, Bloomer, since you've been in the Steamworks for all four months of your restoration, you have no general knowledge of the Main Line's path."

"That's true. I don't," said Bloomer. "And since I've not turned my wheels in over ninety years, of course I'd need a fellow engine to help me."

"Just who could we nominate to accompany you?" wondered the Small Controller.

The Fat Controller thought, and not one moment later, he felt it come to him.

"I know just the engine for this truly special occasion," he said as he beckoned them to come close.

When the two controllers heard what the Fat Controller whispered next, they both nodded in discreet agreement.

"Ohh, this plan is getting more exciting by the moment!" Sir Robert chimed with delight. "Well then, Sir Topham, why don't you go on your way…and tell her?"

Bloomer heard what Sir Robert had said. Right away, he had a very good feeling as to who this "Her," was going to be for his big day.

"Oh, she'll be very pleased, I think," he thought cleverly. "Pleased and most tickled."

"Oh, I will. I will indeed, Sir Robert," the Fat Controller replied as he shook the Earl's hand. "Arrangements shall be made, and the champagne shall be broken for everyone to behold. See you very soon, Bloomer."

Then the Fat Controller hurried outside and returned to Winston.

"Well, now, Bloomer. I think that's everything for now," said Sir Robert. "Here you are in your brand-new livery, freshly trimmed sideburns and the day is now set for you and your fellow engine for the big event. I think our business here is done. So, I'll see you very soon too! A great, great pleasure to have helped with your restoration and now having you on our Railway!"

Then Sir Robert hurried outside and returned to the Fat Controller and Winston. As they hurried off on their way, the barber and Bloomer's new crew went on their way and returned to Bertie.

"The very best to you on your big day, Bloomer, and Jock's too," said the Small Controller. "We all look forward to it."

Bloomer just nodded and smiled as the Small Controller went on his way too. And so Bloomer looked outside once more and let out a deep sigh. It was going to be a very special day indeed, and he could only imagine what it would be like to be really useful again after so very long…

While the Small Controller headed back to Arlesburgh West and Bertie took Bloomer's crew and the barber on their way back, the Fat Controller dropped Sir Robert off at Ulfstead Castle again, then hurried off across the Main Line, all the way back to Knapford Station. He parked Winston in a siding, then hurried into his office to check the timetable. He then spent a fair while marking everything that needed to be done the next day. Invitations to be made, photographers to be hired at Crovan's Gate and Arlesburgh West alike, and more.

About half an hour later, the Fat Controller had just about everything in order when he heard that very whistle outside.

"Oh! She's here!" he jumped.

And she was. Emily came puffing in toward the station, having done most of her work. Just one more load to bring to Wellsworth before she'd be done for the day. She entered the station, then as she rolled along Platform One, the Fat Controller burst out of his office.

"Ah! Emily! I say, Emily!" he called excitedly.

Emily stopped right away and looked up. "Oh? What is it, sir? I'm about to take my last load to Wellsworth …and…you look quite excited."

"Excited and happy, Emily," said the Fat Controller. "Before you take that load, I have something very important to share with you."

"Really? What, sir?"

"First of all, Emily…have you, by chance, heard any recent spreading news throughout this afternoon?"

"Hmm…I did see Thomas beaming quite a smile earlier today," said Emily. "And there's been quite excited chatter amongst some of the engines and passengers throughout today, though I'm not sure of exactly what. Do you, sir?"

"I didn't just hear it, Emily. I've seen it," said the Fat Controller. "I'll tell the rest of the Steam Team later tonight, but right now, I am delighted to inform you that after all these long weeks and months of constant progress at the Steamworks…Bloomer is now officially restored, and ready to return to the rails!"

Suddenly, Emily gasped. Her mouth gaped very wide, and her eyes grew very big. All these long months, she and the other engines had been waiting for this day, having a paid occasional visits to Bloomer whenever they had the time. Now the big news was here for her.

"Ohh…oh, my goodness!" she trembled excitedly. "Bloomer's coming back to the line! Really?"

"That he is, Emily," said the Fat Controller. "And he isn't the only one. I trust you've been hearing about Jock's progress too?"

"Jock…the chartreuse yellow engine being tested at Arlesburgh West?" Emily pondered. "Yes, I've been hearing a little about him too. Lovely how Douglas gave him the name after the engines in the Highland Jocks."

"That's right, Emily. Now to business. It's been decided between me, Sir Robert and Mr. Duncan that both Bloomer and Jock are to be christened and applied to active service on the same day. We have chosen the day after tomorrow for their ceremonies. First Bloomer at Crovan's Gate. Then he'll bring all the guests to Arlesburgh West to see Jock's commissioning too. The day after tomorrow, we shall break out the champagne for them both."

"Wow! That is most exciting, sir," said Emily. "Except…how will Bloomer manage the trip? He's been at the Steamworks all this time…"

"Well, Emily…that is the very thing as to why I called to see you," said the Fat Controller. "Since Bloomer's been kept in the Steamworks for all this time, he is still completely unfamiliar with the line."

"Not to mention, having not moved his wheels in over ninety years," said Emily. "He would feel most truly stiff at first anyway."

"Indeed, he would," said the Fat Controller. "Therefore, to ensure that Bloomer be able to manage the long journey and heavy train, I have decided that you, Emily, should have the incredible honour…of double-heading the special train with him. Would you like that?"

Emily suddenly felt everything come to a stop as she slowly turned to the Fat Controller with a distinct gape. Her ears could not believe what they had just heard. To be given such an important task with an engine such as Bloomer! With this most astounding proposition, passengers, guests, engines and more would be given the magnificent spectacle of not one, but two Victorian-era Singles working together for such a tremendous occasion. Emily's face went pink as she began to tremble and coo most excitedly. Then she began letting off small wisps of steam as she couldn't hold in her bubbly joy.

"Oh! Ohh! Ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!" she jiggled, then squealed with joy. "Wheee! Oh-ho-ho-ho, thank you, Sir Topham Hatt! Thank you, THANK you! Oh, my! SUCH a delight that will be for everyone to see!"

"Ho-ho! I knew you'd love it, Emily," the Fat Controller smiled. "The two of you shall cast a most wonderous sight all along the Main Line."

"More than wondrous, sir," Emily beamed. "It's almost magical to think of! But then…wait…oh, dear…well…"

"What is it, Emily?" the Fat Controller asked, noticing how she trailed off.

"Well, sir…I can't help but feel, well…a bit concerned. Surely the presence of a vintage locomotive will attract countless photographers…and we don't want to have any trouble from overly eager enthusiasts putting themselves at risk trying to get Bloomer's photo, all while he's on his very first journey back on the rails."

"That is certainly a valid point, Emily," said the Fat Controller. "And I can assure you, and Bloomer, there is no need to worry about that. I've been putting together the timetable for tomorrow and the big day. Wherever they'll be needed, the police will be on-hand to make sure any enthusiasts and guests don't ignore safety guidelines."

"I see. Well, that's very good," said Emily. "After all, it'll be Sodor's very own Bloomer, and Sodor's Safety Engine as well. Truly amazing."

"It's a pleasure and a delight to see you so eager for the occasion, Emily," said the Fat Controller. "Now, in the meantime, you should get your load to Wellsworth, and there are still the final preparations to be put together throughout tomorrow. I'll explain in full detail tonight at Tidmouth Sheds."

"Alright, then. See you tonight, sir," said Emily. "And thank you once again!"

"You're truly welcome, Emily," the Fat Controller said with a wink.

With that, Emily quickly collected her load for Wellsworth and set off with a most cheerful whistle. She couldn't wait to see what the rest of the Steam Team would say about the very job she had been given, especially what Thomas would think.

"Oh, my! Me and Bloomer pulling the special train together!" Emily chimed as she looked back to her driver. "Could you ever imagine such a thing, Paul?"

"Before Bloomer came along, I can't say I have, Emily," he replied. "But now…I wouldn't miss it for the world. I am most eager and proud to see you have the honour, Emily."

After a swift, joyful run along the line, Emily arrived at Wellsworth and dropped off her load. Edward and Philip were shunting trucks in a nearby siding.

"Hello, you two," Emily smiled.

"Ohh! Hello, Emily! Have you heard the news?" chirped Philip. "We hear Bloomer's on his way back to the rails!"

"Yes, I did hear, Philip," she replied. "Sir Topham Hatt just told me. He's now fully restored at long-last."

"Oh, yes! Truly amazing," said Edward. "To think that an engine as old and grand as him is now joining the railway. I can only imagine what all the others must be thinking!"

"The chatter has certainly been quite extensive," said Emily. "I just wonder what Thomas will think of all this…and more besides."

"More, Emily? What do you mean?" Edward asked.

"Hmm…I think it would be best to wait on that one, Edward," said Emily. "But I promise, you'll see soon enough. Everyone will."

Then she set off on her way back, leaving Edward and Philip thinking with interest. As Emily headed on her way back, she suddenly perked up again as she thought just who else must have heard the news. For just a brief moment she began to think of Arlesburgh, but then thought again.

"Hmm…no need to go there," she thought. "They'll be coming along tonight. Besides, they'll want to hear themselves…"

For the rest of the evening, the news continued to spread to all corners of the island. The whole Steam Team and more had heard the hearsay and were all most excited to know all that was going to happen next.

At last, as dusk began to fall, six of the Steam Team returned to Tidmouth Sheds. Thomas, Percy, James, Nia, Gordon and Rebecca all backed into their berths, each of them filled with speculation and curiosity.

"Oh, Gordon. Could it really be?" said Rebecca. "The passengers were talking so much about it!"

"Mine seemed quite excited too, Rebecca," said Gordon. "They were all saying something about Bloomer…and a ceremony of sorts…"

"Bloomer? Ceremony? Of course there would be," said James. "But if it's true, then when and where?"

"Maybe he's been restored! Or very close to being so," Percy peeped. "Why else would they hold a ceremony, if the chatter is true?"

"I've been wondering all afternoon, what with all the chatter," said Nia. "Thomas, do you have any clear answers on all this?"

"You know…in fact, I did," said Thomas. "I saw Sir Topham Hatt and Sir Robert hurrying along in Winston earlier today…and I've been wondering ever since…"

Just then, Emily's whistle sounded through the air. The engines looked and saw her approaching the sheds with a broad smile on her face as she turned around to her berth and backed inside.

"Hello, Emily," said Thomas. "Have you heard the spreading news today? It seems as though the time is now very close for Bloomer…we think."

"Of course I did," said Emily. "In fact…I just found out the certain part for myself earlier today."

"You have, Emily? Well, what is it?" Percy peeped.

At that very moment, there came the sound of a car. The Steam Team looked and saw two cars coming along toward the sheds. The Fat Controller's blue car came pulling in from one side, and Caroline came on the other side with the Riders, to which Emily smiled and nodded.

"So they did come," she thought to herself. "Perfect."

Both cars stopped outside the sheds, then out came the Fat Controller, then David and Beatrice from Caroline as they walked up toward the engines. All the engines looked intently for a few moments, not knowing what to say at first.

"Good evening, sir," Thomas said eventually.

"Good evening, Thomas. And to all the rest of you," said the Fat Controller.

"Yes, good evening," said David. "And hello, Emily."

"Hello, David and Beatrice," said Emily. "I had a feeling you'd be coming along."

"Well, Emily. David and I thought it best to come here tonight," said Beatrice. "On account of something regarding all the spreading news throughout today. Isn't that right, Sir Topham?"

"Too right you are, Beatrice," said the Fat Controller. "As for the rest of you, you have all worked very well today, and I am very pleased with how today turned out. …I can also assume you have all been hearing and spreading a great deal of hearsay, regarding our dear friend Bloomer at the Steamworks…"

All the engines nodded and hummed in response, waiting for what would come next.

"Well, I say it's time to address all the hearsay for certain," said the Fat Controller. "The time has now come to reveal something very big and very important to all of you. I received a call this very afternoon, from the Steamworks, to which Sir Robert and I headed straight over, joined by Mr. Duncan, and I am most delighted and honoured to tell you all…that Bloomer is now fully restored at last!"

There it was. The news had now been revealed in its true form. The Fat Controller and the Riders looked and watched as all the engines fell still for a few moments, taking it all in after all the past four months they had waited for this time to come. Then came a sudden and loud chorus of whistles and cheers.

"Ohh! Cinders and Ashes! It's TRUE!" Thomas exclaimed. "Bloomer's now restored! I KNEW something was up when I saw you and Sir Robert, sir!"

"Well, there it is, Thomas," said the Fat Controller. "Bloomer is now ready to be put back to service."

"Amazing! Truly wonderful!" Rebecca whistled happily.

"Why, I am glad on it!" Gordon declared proudly. "This is well! THIS is as it should be for our very own Bloomer!"

"Oh, goodness, it's the best news we've heard yet!" said Beatrice. "Spectacular, isn't it, David? He'll be rolling along very soon now!"

"It's a miracle, Mum," said David. "To think we-we…we could actually SEE him with our own eyes!"

"Oh, my goodness!" Thomas exclaimed. "There must be so much to do, stuff to make ready, preparations to be made!"

"That's exactly why we're here tonight, Thomas," said the Fat Controller. "There is certainly all of that and more…because there's more than one occasion to prepare for besides Bloomer's. Surely you've all been hearing a little about Mr. Duncan's new engine, Jock?"

"Jock…yes, I think we've heard a little about him," said Thomas.

"Douglas gave him the name himself, didn't he?" said Percy.

"That's right, Percy," said Emily. "Sir Topham Hatt called me over at Knapford this afternoon, and he told me everything right then and there. After undergoing his final tests…Jock is now ready to be commissioned too."

"Really? Well, that's all very good," said Thomas. "So…what are the plans, sir?"

"Here it is. The big day shall be held the day after tomorrow," said the Fat Controller. "First thing in the morning, at Crovan's Gate Station, Bloomer's unveiling shall happen first. There, Sir Robert shall christen him for his return to service, then he will be bringing their guests up to Arlesburgh West for Jock's unveiling…and since it's the first time in almost nine decades since he's had any travels on any rails, our Aristocratic friend won't be going alone. To ensure that Bloomer rides with pride and purpose, with a most wonderful spectacle to behold, I have chosen just the engine to double-head with the special train."

"Ohh…and which engine shall that be, sir?" Thomas asked.

Emily held her breath as she watched for the engines' reactions.

"It's only perfectly fitting, given both these engine's classes," said the Fat Controller. "On the big day…the engine who will be pulling the special train with Bloomer shall be…Emily!"

Emily looked up at once, and in that same instant, the six other engines gasped and gaped, Thomas being the most explicit to do so. Then David and Beatrice gave quite a jump and ran right over to Emily as she beamed most proudly. Bloomer being restored was one thing,

"Ohh! Ohh! Emily!" Thomas gasped at last. "YOU? Pulling the train with Bloomer?! Cinders and ASHES! That's marvellous! It's fabulous!"

"It's true, Thomas," Emily giggled. "Sir Topham Hatt gave me the job back at Knapford, I'm so very happy to partake in the occasion!"

"Ohh, Emily! So are we!" Nia whistled happily. "You'll look wonderful with Bloomer and the guests!"

"Thank you, Nia," Emily chimed. "David? What do you think?"

"Oh-ho! Emily, you darling emerald lassie!" David chimed as he got on her running plate rubbed her cheek.

"Congratulations, Emily," said Beatrice. "Never has Sodor ever seen such a sight that it will see for Bloomer's day!"

"Well, that will be a sight for all to see, indeed!" James stated with surety.

"Oh, Emily! That's truly an inspiration!" beamed Percy.

"It'll be a sensation!" Rebecca chimed with a chuckle.

"And it'll be a very busy day tomorrow to make ready for the big event," said the Fat Controller. "Percy, I'll need you to be ready early tomorrow. There are lots of invitations to be made, therefore lots of letters to be delivered to every station across the island. It's up to you to get all that mail wherever it needs going."

"Yes, sir," Percy beamed.

"As for you, Emily, once tomorrow's work is done, when evening comes, you are to bring the coaches for the very special train to Crovan's Gate, then you must spend the night at the Steamworks with Bloomer."

"Ooh, of course, sir!" Emily chimed, then turned her eyes. "Uhh…you don't mind, do you Thomas?"

"Not at all, Emily. I know Bloomer will be most obliged," Thomas said with a teasing smile. "And no doubt he'll have rather smooth things to say for my beloved angel, as he did for Rebecca, Nia and Molly too."

"Yes, Thomas. He will," Emily smiled likewise. "And you needn't worry about any of that. As he told us both, he knows when a fellow engine is spoken for."

Thomas lowered his eyebrow, but maintained his smile just the same.

"Now, then," the Fat Controller went on. "Among our very many guests, Sandy shall be at Crovan's Gate too, since after all, she was there when Jane and I rediscovered Bloomer. I and all the other railway controllers will be there as well, and with Bloomer's return to service, there will be immense bustle all across the island. To that effect, the police to be on hand in case any enthusiasts get overly excited. As for the rest of you, you are all to go about your work tomorrow as per usual, then in just one more day…it shall happen. May you all see truly wonderful glimpses of our very own Bloomer. A grand day it shall be."

"Here, here!" the whole Steam Team said together.

With that, the Fat Controller and the Riders returned to their cars and set off for home. For a little while longer, the Steam Team talked and wondered about the big day until they started to grow tired, then reversed into their berths and fell asleep. Thomas and Emily were the last two still awake as they were deeply stirred by all the news today, and what would come very soon.

"This is truly wonderful news, Emily," Thomas whispered. "Bloomer joining Sodor's ranks at last! I can't believe you'll actually be pulling the train with him!"

"Neither can I, Thomas," Emily whispered. "It's such a wonderful time for Sodor. While he may be doing most of his work at Ulfstead Castle, it's such a gift to have our very own Bloomer."

"One of the greatest gifts Sodor will ever have, that much is true," Thomas whispered as he backed into his berth. "Well. Sweet dreams, Emily…and good luck with Bloomer."

"Thank you, Thomas. Sweet dreams to you," Emily whispered as she backed into her berth too.

And so the whole Steam Team was now asleep, all too eager for the big day to come. Just a little wait longer, then it would all come bursting forth with great jubilation.

The next morning, just as the sun began peaking over the horizon, the Steam Team woke up together, and immediately, it dawned on them all. Bloomer and Jock's ceremonies were now just a day away.

"Good morning, everyone," said Thomas. "Ohh, it's so close now!"

"Yes, it is, Thomas! Ooh! It's so exciting!" Rebecca jiggled.

"It really is," said Percy. "Now, I'd best be off now. My mail is surely waiting for me, and I mustn't let it run late!"

"Indeed, Percy," said Emily. "The whole island will be wanting to see Bloomer come out and start rolling along the rails again!"

As soon as Percy was ready, he set out onto the turntable, turned to the right line, and set off for his big day of delivering the mail.

"Have a great day, Percy!" Thomas called.

"Bye, Thomas!" Percy called back.

Soon afterwards, the Fat Controller came along and gave the other engines their jobs for the day, then they all set off to do the very best they could. As the day progressed, Percy collected his special mail train from Knapford Harbour, which was filled with packages upon packages of letters and invitations for Bloomer and Jock's ceremonies alike. Then he set off to travel to every stations across Sodor, delivering the mail as he went. Over the next several hours, all the other engines worked hard and diligently, doing whatever they needed to do, and all very excited as their minds were completely absorbed by Bloomer's Grand Unveiling to be held the very next day…

Meanwhile at the Steamworks, as it became late afternoon, Bloomer was going through some last-minute inspections of all his systems and mechanisms, just to be absolutely sure he was in tip-top shape for his return to the rails. Alongside Victor, Kevin and Sandy, Bloomer's new crew Eric and Craig were there, and the three railway inspectors were there too, logging everything that was going on. Furthermore, all five men had one thing in particular planned for Bloomer right here in the Steamworks regarding his new crew. After what felt like a long time, one of them spoke.

"Well, then. Everything appears to be in order," said the head inspector. "Now, Bloomer, before your big day tomorrow, I think the time has come for something special right here for you…between you and your new crew."

"Oh? And what may that be, my good chaps?" said Bloomer.

The head inspector looked toward Eric and Craig, who both nodded and came walking toward Bloomer.

"The head inspector has made a little proposal to us, Bloomer," said Eric. "Your recommission is now less than a day away, and until then, you'll still be waiting here a little longer…"

"But to ensure you're at least re-accustomed to feeling like a busy engine again," said Craig. "What say we light you your first fire in ninety years and put some steam into you, just to warm you up, as it were?"

Bloomer considered this offer carefully. He had not felt anything like being a busy engine for all this time, and had therefore forgotten what it could really be like. But to ensure his big day would go smoothly just the same, he made his answer.

"Why, thank you, good sirs. I gladly shall. Perhaps I may remember some of my old strength…before it truly comes forth tomorrow."

In the next moment, both driver and fireman entered Bloomer's cab, which had since been restored just as the rest of him was, with brand-new gauges, dials, switches and levers. Workmen brought several buckets of water and filled Bloomer's tanks to give him a head start. Then with a deep breath, Craig carefully made the fire. It burned small at first, then slowly built up in the firebox. Bloomer took a deep breath and shuddered as he felt the warmth slowly spread to his boiler. After nine decades since, it was slowly flooding right back to him. Shortly afterwards, Craig readied the shovel and began putting large lumps of coal like a wall around the outside. Then the glowing middle part was covered with smaller lumps. Bloomer hadn't felt anything like this since his previous age, and as such, he wasn't quite used to it at first.

"Begging your pardon, mate. You're spoiling my fire," said Bloomer. "And after ninety years, too."

"Wait and see, Bloomer," said Victor. "We'll have a roaring fire just when we want it."

Craig was right. Before he knew it, Bloomer's fire was burning strongly, and his boiler began to bubble while the three inspectors watched eagerly. Eric carefully watched the pressure and temperature gauges as the needles slowly pointed higher and higher. Bloomer could feel the pressure slowly rising and wondered what would come next. Then just when the gauges reached the right spot, Eric turned a lever, to which Bloomer let off his very first wave of steam in ninety years. The steam fissured upwards like a cloud, and he was now very pleased, remembering fondly what it was like all those decades ago.

"It's working! It's working!" Eric announced proudly.

Victor, Kevin, Sandy and all three inspectors smiled as they saw it for themselves. Bloomer was indeed ready, and so the inspectors all tipped their hats and went on their way. Soon afterwards, Eric shut off steam, and Craig carefully dropped Bloomer's fire. He was indeed ready to go.

"Well, Bloomer? How was that?" asked Eric.

"It…it's exactly as I remember!" Bloomer said heavily. "Almost like…like I'm back to those bygone days, so long ago!"

"Well, we're glad to hear that, Bloomer," said Craig. "Your firebox and boiler are now ready for tomorrow…and I promise you, the feeling of wandering the rails again will be even grander and truly something to behold for you."

Bloomer nodded and sighed longingly.

"Oh! I just noticed, Bloomer. It'll be evening soon," said Sandy. "Your fellow engine will surely be coming along tonight."

Bloomer heard Sandy and drew a clever, gentlemanly smile.

"Oh, I know she'll be here," he said. "And I'm very sure of exactly who it shall be, just as Sir Robert foretold…"

Throughout the rest of the day, while Bloomer awaited his company, all the engines kept on with their work across the Railway, but their excitement wasn't getting any smaller as every hour brought the big day closer and closer. The wait was almost excruciating at times, but they all knew it would come forth in the end.

At last, as evening came along and the sun began to set, the day's work had come to an end, and most of the engines started heading back to Tidmouth Sheds. At Knapford Station, the Fat Controller was very pleased. There had been no complaining passengers, all the trains had run to time, and all of Percy's mail had been delivered to all the destinations. Then the Fat Controller noticed the time and got up. He had just come out of his office when he saw Percy shunting his now empty mail wagons into a siding, his face slightly red from all his hard work. He then headed to another siding and fetched four Express Coaches with red linings and shunted them to Platform Two.

"Ohh…I'm back, sir," Percy said wearily. "All the mail was exactly on time, as was needed."

"Excellent work today, Percy," said the Fat Controller. "You have done a most splendid job with the mail today. All the guests shall be ready for tomorrow, and all the arrangements are made. Now, you'd best make your way to Tidmouth Sheds. You've earned a well-deserved sleep tonight."

"Thank you, sir…oh, I can't wait for tomorrow. None of us can."

Then Percy set off on his way to go to bed. Shortly afterwards, Emily came puffing in from the other side of the station. As she came along Platform One, she wore a steady smile. With her work now done, she was ready to do her part for Bloomer and his big day.

"Well, hello, Emily," said the Fat Controller. "What's the report?"

"Hello, sir," Emily said confidently. "All my work today is done, and now I'm ready for tonight."

"I see you are, Emily. This is most excellent," said the Fat Controller. "Everything is set. Tomorrow shall see the unveiling of both the old and the new…and now, you must be on your way."

"Yes, sir," said Emily. "I trust these are the right coaches?"

"They are, Emily. All set for you and our very dear friend tomorrow, when the whole Island awaits our two Victorian-Era friends. May you and Bloomer bring us a most wondrous sight, Emily, as shall Jock when his commissioning comes."

Emily nodded, then switched to Platform Two and coupled right up to her coaches. Then with a dutiful whistle, she started on her way.

"Here I go, sir. See you tomorrow!" she chimed proudly as the Fat Controller tipped his hat, then set off for his car to head home.

Under the setting sun, Emily ran swiftly and happily all along the Main Line, all set to do her part with Bloomer. She passed through Crosby and Wellsworth Station, over Gordon's Hill, through Maron and Cronk, and all the rest of the way as the sky grew dark and the stars began to show on her way. Then just as the night fell completely, Emily arrived at Crovan's Gate, left her coaches in the first siding she saw, then set off again.

At the Steamworks, Victor, Kevin and Sandy were settling down for the night while Bloomer was still waiting for his fellow engine to arrive. Everything was in perfect order for the ceremony, and Bloomer's heart maintained a strong beat of pride and excitement.

"Just until tomorrow now," Bloomer said softly. "Oh…it's so very near…"

"Oh, yes, my friend," said Victor. "This will be the finest ceremony Sodor has ever seen yet. Your unveiling, Bloomer. It will be spectacular."

"That it shall, my good chap," said Bloomer. "Especially with the fellow engine Sir Robert hinted to me. She must be coming any minute now."

Then right on cue, a distant and very welcome voice came from outside.

"Oh, Bloomer!"

Everyone in the Steamworks looked out into the night, and there was Emily puffing her way inside. Victor, Kevin, Sandy and especially Bloomer smiled most delightfully as she came in close, then stopped right before Bloomer's buffers with a wave of steam.

"Well, my stars. What have we here?" Bloomer beamed. "Our sweetheart, Emily has come!"

"Hello and good evening, Bloomer," Emily chimed merrily. "Long time, no see…up until this very moment, and of course, for the rest of Sodor, it's only until tomorrow morning now."

"Goodness me, where has all the time gone?" said Bloomer. "I trust you've all heard the news, m'darling?"

"We have, Bloomer," said Emily. "You've been kept hidden away in that shed on the Mainland for nearly ninety years, now you're coming back at last! Are you all set for tomorrow?"

"I am, sweetheart. Just had my very first fire and steam test today," said Bloomer. "Haven't gone anywhere, but a successful test just the same."

"That's wonderful," said Emily. "You must have started feeling like a real engine again. As for tomorrow, have you been polished up? Had a new coat of paint?"

Bloomer suddenly looked up, noticing what had been asked.

"Hmm? Ahh, so they haven't told you quite everything," he grinned. "Indeed, I've been given quite the new wardrobe. Would you like to see, m'dear?"

"Ohh…yes, please, Bloomer," said Emily. "May I, Victor?"

Victor nodded to the manager, who was still there for a short while before he'd be going home. He turned a switch and a few lights came on over Bloomer. Then the turntable turned him around to his side, to which Emily suddenly gasped and gave a trembling coo of intrigue. There she could see the brand-new vermillion red livery for herself. Never had she seen such a colour with James, Arthur or any red engine for that matter. There was no denying, it was far beyond any meaning of the word splendid.

"Ohh…oh, my! Bloomer!" she gasped as he was turned around to face her again. "What a wonderful, handsome new coat!"

"Vermillion red livery, that be," said Bloomer. "For so long now, it was believed and thought this was the standard colour of my class, though I never saw it on any of my siblings way back when. Yet here I am with that very colour now."

"The only colour, I would say. It looks perfect on you," Emily smiled. "Just wait until James sees this! Yet another red engine!"

"The ONLY vermillion red one, mind you," said Bloomer. "And…do you notice anything else?"

Emily looked again, trying to see what Bloomer meant. Then as she looked along his face, there was something different.

"Huh? Oh? Why, Bloomer…you got your sideburns trimmed too…just as you mentioned when we first ever met you."

"I said it, and so it's been done," said Bloomer. "Do I look presentable now?"

"Oh, you're presentable and very handsome now, Bloomer," Emily chimed.

"Now then, Emily. Seeing as you're here tonight…I've been curious for a while now," said Bloomer. "Yesterday, the three controllers said something about me needing a fellow engine to help pull the special train tomorrow…"

"That's right, Bloomer," said Emily. "Sir Topham Hatt told me all about you having a companion to escort you for the trip…and so he decided, given both our class of engine…that I be the very one to do the job with you."

There it was for Bloomer. His very strong feeling on this matter was indeed true.

"Why, of course he did. And I am immensely obliged," he replied. "I had a feeling all along it'd be you, Emily. Ever since yesterday when Sir Robert spoke of…her…I knew it couldn't be anyone else but you."

"Hm-hm! I thought you'd know, Bloomer," Emily chuckled. "I'm so very happy to be given the honour, just as I'm sure you are too."

"Two Victorian-Era Singles double-heading tomorrow," said Bloomer. "My seven-foot wheels, and an eight-footer too. An absolutely perfect expedition, especially with a jaw-droppingly gorgeous and delightfully curvy sheila as you, sweetheart."

"Ooh…oh, Bloomer. Th-thank you," Emily tittered and blushed shyly. "I'm truly delighted to show you along the line wherever we go tomorrow."

"As am I, m'darling," said Bloomer "And of course, returning to being a really useful engine after so, so long…"

Emily nodded surely, then gave a yawn as she was ready to settle in.

"Well, now. I'd say it's time we both went to bed, Bloomer," she said. "You have the biggest day tomorrow, as does Jock."

"Too right we do, m'dear," said Bloomer. "You sleep very well now, Emily. And thank you."

"You're most welcome, Bloomer," Emily yawned. "You sleep well too."

"Goodnight, my fiends," Victor smiled.

And so the Steamworks lights went out, and the manager set off for home. Bloomer and Emily soon fell asleep and settled in for the night, most excited and delighted over the big day that lay just ahead for them and Jock, and for many others as well. At Tidmouth Sheds, all the engines were asleep as well, and they couldn't wait to see what the next day would bring. Thomas in particular was most eager to see his emerald angel riding with Bloomer. That would be a most gratifying sight indeed.

"You'll make the whole island proud, Emily," Thomas whispered in his sleep. "You, Bloomer and Jock…"

The night passed peacefully and serenely. Then finally, after so much waiting, anticipation, speculation and curiosity over four months' time, the day began to arrive. The sun slowly rose and morning began to crease across the Island. At Tidmouth Sheds, the engines woke up steadily and with a strong beat in all their hearts. As they looked toward Emily's berth, they could only imagine the sight she and Bloomer would make with the special train, and so they all set off to start their day with smiles and great excitement.

Meanwhile, along the main motorway which all the road vehicles of Sodor used, the bustle was slowly taking place. For long stretches of road running along the rails, teams of police were stationed and posted for any incoming crowds to keep everyone safe and in line. Then along the main road, Bertie, Algy and Bulgy came rolling along, each of them filled with all the guests making their way to Crovan's Gate for the big event at last.

"Isn't it fantastic, Algy?" said Bertie. "Sodor's very own Bloomer now roaming on the rails again, today!"

"And this new Jock fellow will be joining the rails now too," said Algy. "Small wonder for our big bustle here! What do you think, Bulgy?"

"Hmph. Neither engine would have had any of these guests if it weren't for our roads bringing them over," said Bulgy.

"Perhaps, Bulgy," said Algy. "And it would seem Sir Topham thought it best to give Bloomer another chance…rather like he released you from being a henhouse for all those long years?"

Bulgy looked away, trying not to grimace. "Let's just keep on our way, shall we?"

Berite and Algy agreed as the three buses carried on toward Crovan's Gate…

At the Steamworks, Paul, Declan, Eric and Craig had just arrived, ready to bring the day forth for both their engines, followed closely by Herb, Sandy's driver. When they came inside, Bloomer and Emily were still asleep at the turntable, then the sunlight slowly crept inside. Emily felt the coming brightness through her eyes, and as she slowly opened them, she leaned upwards in a slow stretch, then with a deep breath, she yawned herself awake.

"Oohhh…" she yawned. "Oh…good morning, Bloomer."

As Victor, Kevin and Sandy woke up, Bloomer did too as he yawned himself awake, then looked to his Victorian-Era companion.

"Good morning, sweetheart," he smiled, then saw his and Emily's crew come alongside them both.

"Good morning, you two," said Paul. "Well, now. This is it. Your truly special day."

"The guests are starting to gather at Crovan's Gate," said Declan. "And police are stationed all along the main road along the rails."

"Indeed. We'd best get on our way, Sandy," said Herb. "Think of all the bustling crowds waiting for our friend there!"

"Oh, yes!" said Sandy. "Well, got to run, Bloomer. See you there!"

Then off she hurried out of the Steamworks, while all eyes turned back to Bloomer.

"It is time," said Eric. "Now, Bloomer. Are you ready?"

"Ready as I'll ever be," said Bloomer. "I've been waiting for this moment for ninety years…now, here it goes."

While Paul and Declan got to starting Emily's fire, Eric and Craig got onboard Bloomer. They made his fire small at first, then slowly shoveled coal to build it up. Before long, Bloomer's fire was burning nicely and making steam. His boiler soon heated up and began to bubble. Emily, Victor and Kevin all watched eagerly as Bloomer's smile grew bigger. Then small waves of steam starting coming from along his wheels. Eric looked out the cab and nodded to Emily. She nodded back, then Eric spoke.

"One…two…three!"

And right on "Three," Eric released the brakes and opened the regulator. Bloomer felt his steam coursing through his boiler and pipes, and what happened then? After almost ninety straight years of sitting absolutely still and immobile…Bloomer's big driving wheels began to turn, slowly at first, then a little faster every few moments. Emily's heart jiggled like never before in her boiler as she started backing up and leading Bloomer outside.

"He's moving! He's moving!" she gasped. "Come on, Bloomer! Come on!"

"Ohh…oh, by my stars…! They are stiff…! Oohhh…" Bloomer groaned as he inched out of the Steamworks.

"Don't rush, Bloomer. No need whatsoever," said Emily. "Your wheels will remember their old strength better when you take it gently and carefully at first."

Soon, Bloomer and Emily were outside in the morning light. All was now ready. This was it. Quickly, Emily switched to another line and went back inside the Steamworks to use the turntable. When she came out again, she pulled up alongside Bloomer as he now l looking straight ahead down the line.

"Now…Crovan's Gate…where do I go, Emily?" he asked. "Which line?"

"Right where you're looking, Bloomer," said Emily. "But before you do, the guests and I need a ten-minute head start. I'm going on ahead to Crovan's Gate to wait with them. Just follow your line right straight ahead, and you'll be there in good time. Then…we'll both go together."

"Thank you, Emily. I shall be there," Bloomer replied as she set off down the line with a dutiful heart.

At Crovan's Gate Station, everything and everyone was now in place. The whole station was packed to the brim on each platform, left to right with swarms of guests wanting to see the now fully-restored Bloomer. Gathered on the main platform and standing in a straight group were all the railway controllers. Sir Topham Hatt of the North Western, Mr. Percival of the Skarloey Line, Mr. Duncan of the Little Western, Walter Richards of the Culdee Fell, and Sir Robert Norramby, Earl of Ulfstead Castle. Across the platforms, all the guests were gathered together, including Sir Lowham, Lady and Dowager Hatt, Stephen and Bridget, the Fat and Thin Clergymen, the Mayor of Sodor, Lord Callan, Ruth, Jenny Packard, David and Beatrice Rider, the Duke and Duchess of Boxford, and the Sodor Brass Band.

Along the lines at the platforms, Sandy was waiting and trembling with great excitement. All the Narrow Gauge Engines were present for the occasion, along with Stephen, Glynn, Millie and Duke, all of whom Bloomer would be working with on the Earl's Estate whenever he wasn't busy helping on the North Western. All the railway controllers checked their watches and the station clock, all ticking in complete synch to the approaching time to come. Then as the station clock struck 8:00 a.m., there came a distant whistle from around the bend, to which the Fat Controller smiled.

"Here she comes," he said lowly.

Everyone looked and saw Emily puffing swiftly around the bend and toward the station. Her paintwork shone and glimmered beautifully in the sunrise as she came to the line on the opposite platform. She would switch to the guests' platform with her coaches as soon as Bloomer was ready.

"Good morning, Emily. Is our guest of honour all set?" asked Sir Robert.

"Yes, sir. He'll be here in ten minutes," said Emily. "I told him to just follow his line here…then we'll all see him."

All the guests murmured intently as Emily waited with them all. Five minutes passed. Then ten. Then just as the clock ticked to 8:10 a.m., it happened. Just around the bend, there came another whistle no one had ever heard before. Everyone looked and saw another line of steam rising around the bend. Then in that very moment, when that very engine came around that bend, the Sodor Brass Band began playing just the fanfare for this truly spectacular day. There was Sodor's Very Own Bloomer himself, perfectly polished and shined up, his vermillion red livery shining most handsomely in the sun as he steadily rolled along the line. Bloomer's wheels felt stronger still as he approached the station, and he could see the massive crowd across both platforms, which sent a heavy feeling to his heart again. As he drew closer, the fanfare sounded louder and grander. The trumpets, trombones, tubas and large drum all seemed to sing right to him as he pulled in then stopped at the platform. The fanfare went on for just a few seconds more, then suddenly stopped. For a few moments of silence, everyone stared at Bloomer, marveling at his truly wondrous shape. Then in the next moment, the whole station suddenly erupted into thunderous cheers, applause and jumping about. Cameras started flashing, and Bloomer quickly felt uneasy with the big crowd at first, but since no one was clamouring to get too close, he slowly grew used to it and smiled to everyone's smiles and excitement.

After about a minute of sustained noise and rejoice, the Fat Controller and Sir Robert raised their hands, to which the whole station fell quiet. Both gentlemen looked around to all the engines and guests, then came forward to Bloomer's bufferbeam.

"I'm back…I…I'm back…" Bloomer said very softly. "Sir Topham Hatt…Sir Robert of Norramby."

"Breathe the open air again, my friend," the Fat Controller smiled as he turned to the crowd and made the opening speech. "Ladies, gentlemen and engines. We have all waited a truly long time for this day to come, and at long last this very morning, you are now seeing what was long-thought to be extinct, here for all your eyes to behold. We now present, the one and only of his kind left in this world, the LNWR Large Bloomer Class Tender Engine!"

All the guests cheered and applauded again, and even the engines whistled in rejoice before the Fat Controller went on.

"The fame of this unique engine has spread to the far corners of this Island, attracting a great many, many guests, tourists and engines all across the railway. You will all recall that day this past March when my darling Lady Hatt and I were only on our first day of a two-week holiday at the Portpatrick Hotel. That very afternoon, she and I were exploring the Wigtownshire Goods Yards, where we found Sandy, our very own little Speeder here too…then the moment came that we found that very shed, in which we found the one and only remaining LNWR Bloomer Class Tender Engine left in the whole world, and that's all there's ever going to be. This miracle had never been comprehended in any manner before. All we know is that this is a truly special, rare and blessed gift, and we should all be proud and grateful. Had I not explored those yards and came across that shed, we probably never would have known about Bloomer as it is today. Who knows what might have happened to him if I hadn't found him. Whether he would have remained in that shed for always and always, or if he were discovered and put to the same fate as were all the other engines of his class…that would have been a serious and inescapable shame to be faced with…but here and now, as the matter stands, I truly cannot put to specific words how pleased, delighted, surprised and all around very happy I am that we have come to this very day. In the words of some tales that might be written in the Reverend's storybooks someday…this is Sodor's Very Own Bloomer!"

Then came more cheering and applause, to which Bloomer beamed proudly. Once the station was quiet again, Sir Robert came forward and gave his speech.

"I take great pride and pleasure in holding onto most authentic and special engines from bygone ages, with Stephen the Rocket, and Glynn, our No. 1 Coffeepot Engine being prime members of my castle estate. Here and now, we have a brand-new member of the castle's family with Bloomer himself. When Sir Topham Hatt called me during his holiday to tell me the glorious news, everything slowed down to a standstill for me. As so much of the railway had assumed previously, I too thought there were no more Bloomer Class Engines left in the world once they were all withdrawn and scrapped…but to hear that there was just one of their kind still lingering about on the rails, I knew then and there that we simply couldn't let the chance be passed up. It has been a great and unwavering pleasure for me to have helped fund Bloomer's restoration process. We have all waited weeks, nay, months for this day to come, and so here and now, here he is for all of us to see. And now…I think we must offer Bloomer to say a few words. Bloomer? Would you care to say a few words for all of us to hear?"

Bloomer took a deep breath as he looked at all the guests and engines looking right at him. They all wanted to see what he would say. He was naturally nervous being in such a big crowd, but he could also see they weren't in any hurry to crowd him. After a few moments, he gathered his words, then spoke his share.

"Hello and salutations to each and every one of you," he said a little nervously, but more confidently as he went on. "This…this is a day unlike any other I have ever seen in my life. I really cannot say much more than what Sir Topham Hatt and Sir Robert have said already. All of it and more is absolutely true in every way. As for my part to say…I do not know exactly how my life came to this very moment, but it matters not. Today, I shall return to serving the rails once more. Nearly ninety years ago, I was placed in that very shed in Wigtownshire Yards while all the rest of my Bloomer Class Siblings were gradually withdrawn and scrapped as newer engines came along in their place. Darkness and utter quiet surrounded me. I had strayed out of thought and time. Sunlight, rain, snow and stars wheeled overhead my shed, and every day was a long as a life-age of any railway…almost one hundred years, I moved not an inch, nor worked a single second. Every year, month, week, day, hour and minute was inside that shed…stretching on and on, and on still…but it was not the end. In that very moment when my shed doors were opened by the hands of Sir Topham Hatt, I felt life in me again. And so here today, I have been brought back, to live on the wonderful Island of Sodor, to work amongst Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends too, every day of my life. It can all be a dream come true…and for everything and everyone that have brought everything to this very day in time, I can say nothing more or less…than thank you."

With that, Bloomer had spoken his share for everyone to hear, and everyone was stirred greatly. Once again, the whole station cheered for Bloomer's speech for a good few moments. Then the moment came as Sir Robert of Norramby came forward and gestured to the stationmaster. He headed inside the office, then he came out again with a bottle of champagne in his hand. Everyone watched as he handed the bottle to Sir Robert, who then spoke again.

"Now, very dear friends and engines! The time has come for Bloomer and Emily's venture together. For Bloomer's very first train, he and Emily shall bring us all on non-stop journey to Arlesburgh West, where we shall see the unveiling of Mr. Duncan's new engine Jock. But before we proceed any further, it is with great pleasure that with this most momentous occasion, I hereby christen Sodor's Very Own Bloomer for his return to the Rails!"

With that, Sir Robert walked right up to Bloomer's front. Everyone watched and waited for a moment, to which Sir Robert raised the bottle high, holding it by the neck. Then to the surprise of all the engines, Sir Robert brought his arm down quick and smashed the bottle on Bloomer's bufferbeam. There was a big, loud CRACK, broken shards of glass tinkled and champagne spewed into the air like a firework. All the guests along the platform cheered once more, though Bloomer felt otherwise, slightly hurt, and also wet and sticky from what had just happened.

"Ohh! Good Heavens!" he exclaimed strongly. "What was THAT, my good sir?"

"Why, don't you know, Bloomer?" said Sir Robert. "It's a christening. You may or may not know this, but it's a tradition that goes back many hundreds of years, way back before the days of Christopher Columbus. In those days, and probably even today, breaking a bottle on a ship, or in this case, an engine, is believed to bring good luck and safe travels."

"Yes, that's right, Bloomer," said the Fat Controller. "Many merchant ships dating back over five hundred years ago were often christened before they set out to sea."

"Hmm. I see," said Bloomer. "Well, thank you, sir…though it has left me a little pounded. Not to mention wet and sticky."

"Well, it's been done and over with now, Bloomer," said Sir Robert. "And we all truly wish you good luck and save travels for your new chapter on the rails. Now, before you and Emily set out, what say we clean you up real quick?"

"Why, thank you, good chap," said Bloomer.

Two workmen came along at once. One of them had a dustpan and a small broom, to which the shards of glass were swept off Bloomer's running plate. The other workman had a cleaning rag which he wiped along Bloomer's front to clean the champagne off. Within a minute, Bloomer's running plate was clean again, and the clock showed 8:30 a.m. Both engines knew the time had come. Bloomer watched surely as Emily collected her coaches and brought them to the platform at once, allowing everyone to get onboard. Then she came along to the front and backed up to the train.

"It's time, Bloomer," she said. "Are you ready?"

"Oh, I am, Emily. Here we go," said Bloomer.

So he headed to the points, switched to Emily's line, then backed down to her buffers, to which his coupling was hooked on. At last, Bloomer was coupled to his first train in ninety whole years. All the guests got into their coaches, the guard's whistle blew, then with one whistle after the other, the two Victorian-Era Singles set off with their non-stop special train bound for Arlesburgh West, both bubbling with sheer joy and pride. All the controllers and several guests, including David, waved from the coach windows, and so the train set off on its way.

As they rolled along the Main Line, Bloomer was insatiably delighted to finally pull a train under his own steam again. He had never felt so well in his life. In spite of all the long ages he had spent hidden away in that shed, he felt as though he was just the same engine as before, and even better than before too.

"Ohh! Goodness me!" he gasped. "I feel like a new engine again! Right out of the olden days with all my fellow Bloomers!"

"That's lovely to hear, Bloomer," said Emily. "I just know you're gonna love the whole island as you grow more accustomed to it."

Slowly and surely, Bloomer began to pick up speed with Emily guiding him wherever they went. Then when he started going just a little faster, Emily's driver gently braked to check the speed.

"Steady, Bloomer. Don't exert yourself too much," Emily checked. "There's no need to rush anything. You should save your best efforts for Gordon's Hill. It's the biggest, highest hill on the whole Railway. Gordon got stuck on it many years ago, and Edward had to help him over the top."

"Is that right?" said Bloomer. "Well, I'd better see it for myself, then."

Emily and Bloomer continued on their way across the Main Line. As it was expected, Bloomer's presence had attracted many photographers, and for long stretches of road alongside the line, there were tripods and cameras flashing every which way. Both engines gave occasional smiles and glances toward the cameras, but mostly kept their eyes ahead on their journey. As the Fat Controller had assured Emily, police were stationed nearby any crowds to prevent anyone from getting too close to the tracks.

"The streets are packed, Bloomer," said Emily. "I don't recall seeing anything like this, or at least, not in a very long time."

"Neither can I, Emily," said Bloomer. "It's quite like all the crowds who wanted to see me while Bear brought Sandy and I on our way here."

Emily nodded in response, and so they kept along their way. Soon they came passing through Kellsthorpe Road. There, Rebecca and Gordon were both managing goods for a change, and when they looked up, they both drew a very sharp gasp.

"Oh-oh-OHH! Gordon! Look!" Rebecca squawked. "There he is! It's Bloomer! Hello, Bloomer! Welcome back!"

"Bloomer, our dear engine! He's back!" Gordon whistled. "And look at you, Emily! Oh, my, THIS is a grand sight!"

"Aye, it be, sweethearts," said Bloomer. "Sorry we can't stop and chat, though."

"Indeed we can't just yet," said Emily. "The champagne must be broken out on the other side of the island after all!"

And the special train glided right through the station.

"Whoosh!" said Rebecca. "Have you EVER seen anything like that before, Gordon?"

Gordon had to agree that he never had, while Emily and Bloomer's journey went on as they passed through Kildane. Then as they approached Cronk Station, it was James and Nia's turn to behold the spectacular sight for themselves.

"Oh! Oh, look, James! James! Ajabu iko hapa!" Nia whistled excitedly.

"Sizzling Sprockets, Nia! The wonder IS here!" James noted as Bloomer and Emily passed on through.

"Hello, lovelies," Bloomer whistled. "Sodor's very own Bloomer rides the rails again!"

"Wonderful, Bloomer! Wonderful!" Nia cheered.

Then James saw it for himself. "Oh! What the-! Say, Bloomer! Are you red? Like, red-red, James-red, ME red?!"

"Vermillion red, my boy," said Bloomer. "The only Bloomer who has ever worn it, or ever will, for as long as I'm here on Sodor with all of you."

James and Nia held their gaze until the train had gone through the station and out of sight, leaving them both spellbound. Then sure enough, Emily and Bloomer came approaching Maron Station. There, Thomas and Percy had stopped with goods trains of their own, and more photographers were along the platform.

"Oh…they could be along any moment now. Just where are they?" Thomas asked Percy.

At that very moment, there suddenly came the two whistles. Both tank engines darted their eyes upward, and there was the very sight before their eyes.

"Ohh! Bursting Boilers! THOMAS!" Percy shouted out. "There they are!"

As the cameras started flashing their pictures, Thomas looked up, then suddenly gave a shout and let off a big wave of steam. There were Emily and Bloomer double-headed with the special train. The two Victorian-Era Singles double-headed together. Thomas had been waiting for this moment, and his heart nearly jumped into his mouth as he too marveled and relished with the sight his eyes befell.

"Ohh! OHH! Emily! Bloomer! Look at you!" he wheeshed with utter elation. "It's you! My God, it's YOU, Bloomer!"

"Hello and salutations, Thomas and Percy," said Bloomer. "I've never felt so well and really useful in all my life!"

"Hello, Thomas! What do you think of this?" Emily smiled gleefully. "Two Victorian-Era Singles double-heading together!"

"Fire and Smoke!" said Thomas. "Let us have a perfect photograph of THIS!"

Indeed, the cameras kept flashing while Emily and Bloomer kept right on their way, leaving Thomas and Percy at loss for any more words. After passing through Maron, the special train carried onwards and forwards. Bloomer wondered what would come next. Then sure enough, the moment came. As the special train came around the next bend…there was Gordon's Hill. Bloomer saw it and looked all the way up, suddenly feeling his heart jump in his boiler. Looking back to the previous age of railways he had lived, he had never seen any hill like this.

"Oh, my. Emily? Is that…?"

"This is Gordon's Hill, Bloomer," said Emily. "The biggest hill on all Sodor. But fret not. It's not too steep for us, so long as you just keep going. We'll go together."

Bloomer suddenly felt Emily going a little faster, pushing him along the way. He swallowed as he saw the hill drawing nearer and prepared himself. Then the two Victorian Engines came to the foot of the hill and started to climb. Bloomer felt the steep incline against his wheels, and the weight of the train began to pull at his coupling, but Emily didn't slow down one bit. Bloomer then drew a smile as his fire burned stronger. Clouds of smoke and steam billowed from both engines as they climbed up the hill.

"We can do it!" huffed Bloomer.

"We will do it," puffed Emily.

Wheel-tun by wheel-turn, Emily and Bloomer kept climbing higher until they reached the very top. Bloomer looked all around at the panoramic view below him and drew in a deep breath. Such a sight it was to see as the incline then sloped downward.

"Hold tight, Bloomer. Here we go!" Emily called.

Then she and Bloomer set off again, cruising down the other side in fine style together. The guests and railway controllers looked out again and waved to both engines as they came to the bottom and went around the other bend.

"Whoo-ee! That IS a big hill!" said Bloomer. "I'll have to make a note of this one."

"All in good time, Bloomer," said Emily. "Think of the gathering there'll be at Arlesburgh West for Jock's christening!"

So Emily and Bloomer kept cruising along the Main Line, both very proud and pleased with how the trip was going. They passed on through Wellsworth Station where Edward and Philip now got their chance to see the spectacle for themselves.

"Look, Edward! Here they come!" Philip jigged most gleefully. "Hello and welcome, Bloomer! Hi, Emily! Most lovely day, isn't it?"

"It certainly is, Philip," Emily called back. "Especially with the two of us rolling along together."

"Well, grease my clanking gears," Edward beamed. "Two Victorian-Era Singles double-heading together? This truly is a glorious day."

The journey went on and on as Emily and Bloomer passed through Crosby Station, where everyone on the platform once again flashed photographs and waved excitedly for the surreal spectacle. Then shortly after that, the special train drew toward Knapford Station.

"Here, Bloomer," said Emily. "This is Knapford. The main station where the Steam Team starts their schedules, be they passengers or goods. Just a few more stations more, and we'll be at Arlesburgh West."

"Right, Emily. This is a fine station indeed," said Bloomer.

And so the journey carried on along the line. So far, Bloomer found the whole journey absolutely wonderful and unforgettable. Then at last, they reached Tidmouth and were then switched off the Main Line onto Duck's Branch Line. Emily suddenly began thinking about Jock and Mr. Duncan's part of today's big events.

"This is the Branch Line of the Little Western, Bloomer," she said. "We're very close to Arlesburgh West now…where Jock's christening and commissioning shall be put forth. Mr. Duncan will be so proud, and I trust you'll be honoured to see it too."

"Of course, Emily. This this has been a truly wonderful day," said Bloomer. "Being my very first journey here today, I can tell a great deal of how the railway works is notably different from what I remember from my previous age…and I really like it."

"I'm glad, Bloomer," said Emily. "Your life here is going to be a very happy and useful one…"

The journey stretched on along the Branch Line. Inside the coaches, all the guests now knew what was coming next. Mr. Duncan was most particularly keen to see Jock start his life on the railway, and he knew it would be another truly wonderful spectacle to be seen.

Finally, after a very long but truly meaningful journey, Emily and Bloomer arrived at Arlesburgh West Station, just in time for Jock's unveiling ceremony. Gathered along the Ballast Chute were Rex, Mike, Bert, Frank, Sigrid and the Blister Twins. Gathered along the station platforms were Duck, Oliver, Toad, Donald and Douglas, Ryan and Daisy. And of course, gathered on the platforms were many more excited guests, both for Jock and for Bloomer. Just as the clock struck to the precise schedule, the whole station heard those two whistles, then they all saw the surreal spectacle for themselves.

"Ooh! Look, Douggie!" Donald gasped. "There they be! A Bloomer Class and our bonnie sister together! Great Scott!"

"Aye, Donnie," said Douglas. "Truly a sight only the Island of Sodor could ever behold for itself! Hello and welcome, Bloomer!"

Everyone watched as Emily and Bloomer drew in closer, then stopped right at the platform as everyone left their coaches and gathered together.

"Oh, Emily! And Bloomer! Hello and welcome!" whistled Duck. "Ohh, this is a most wonderful marvel to be seen!"

"Excellent and truly wonderful work today, Bloomer and Emily," said the Fat Controller. "You have both performed gallantly and most usefully, and I am very, very proud of you both. Now, it is time for Mr. Duncan and Jock's big event. They've been waiting a long time for this moment, and now they shall bring it forth for all of us to see."

With that, the Small Controller walked along the platform and saw everything was ready just as he had planned. Jock was standing on his own line near the Ballast Chute where everyone could see him, and standing in front of all the other guests along the platform was a very special gentleman. Col. Ranald Drixon, Chairman of the Arlesdale Railway. With a most decisive expression, he extended his hand, to which Mr. Duncan did likewise, then shook the Colonel's hand.

"Good day, Mr. Duncan, and to all our honoured and proud guests," said Col. Drixon. "And of course, welcome, Bloomer."

"Thank you, sir. My deepest and sincerest thank you," Bloomer nodded.

"Such an honour it is to have you come today, my very good sir," the Small Controller said to the Colonel. "Bloomer and Emily have performed most remarkably, and we're all here on time. Now the time has come for you, Jock. My newest addition to my team of engines."

"Thank you, Mr. Duncan," said Jock. "Well…now that we're all here…it seems as though we may proceed."

Col. Drixon and the Small Controller both nodded surely. Drixon then turned around and gestured all the guests to gather around, and so they did. After a few moments, Col. Drixon cleared his throat, then gave the opening speech.

"A very good afternoon to one and all gathered here at Arlesburgh West. Today has been a truly remarkable event for all of you and more. As a former Colonel, I have seen a great many things in my service to the Royal Marines and Her Majesty's Navy. Likewise as Chairman of the Arlesdale Railway, I have seen many different things and different experiences from its fellow engines…but today has brought something I don't believe I have ever seen before, that being a most wonderful gift and honour on account of both the old and the new. We have all seen Sodor's Very Own Bloomer return to active service at long, long last, as many of you have seen for yourselves at Crovan's Gate Station, and this very sight is a most remarkable one indeed. A Bloomer Class Engine and a Stirling Single Class engine together. Truly a glorious spectacle indeed…and with his wonderful return to the rails, he and Emily have brought you all here for another momentous occasion. After several days and weeks of undergoing performance tests at this very spot on Mr. Duncan's railway, we now celebrate another fine addition to the Arlesdale Railway. None other than our brand-new friend, Jock."

As he gestured to the chartreuse yellow engine, the whole crowd cheered and applauded for a few moments, and the engines whistled happily. Shortly afterwards, the Small Controller came forth and made his speech.

"I am very proud of all the engines that work on my section of Sodor's Railways," said the Small Controller. "Rex, Mike, Bert, Frank, Sigrid and the Blister Twins are six of the finest engines I have ever had to work with. Then just a short while ago, Jock came out of the workshop for the first time and began undergoing performance tests. At the time, I hadn't thought of a name yet for him. Then the very next day after our beloved friend Dilly, Donald's Duck passed away, Douglas came along and mentioned how my new engine looked rather like those engines who worked up in the Scottish Highlands. Jocks they used to be called, and so Douglas gave him the very name he bares today. With our new friend Jock having joined my engine team, he shall make a splendid and really useful addition to our operations. And so, here today for this momentous occasion, as Sir Robert did for Bloomer at Crovan's Gate, the time has now come for the official christening of Jock for his commission to active railway service!"

The engines whistled and the guests applauded for a few moments. Then everyone watched as the moment now came for Jock's big part. Col. Ranald Drixon came to Jock's bufferbeam and held out his hand. The stationmaster came over with another bottle of champagne and handed it to Col. Drixon. He then stood tall beside Jock, then holding the bottle by the neck, he raised his arm up, then brought it down with a distinct, exploding smash onto Jock's bufferbeam, thus Jock was hereby christened and now in session for active service.

"Ohh!" Jock exclaimed. "Goodness me! What a smash!"

"Yes, Jock, it is," said Col. Drixon. "But surely you know this how christening is done. For merchant ships heading out to sea, and even for engines like yourself and Bloomer, it's symbolic of wishing good luck and safe travels."

"Really? Well, that is quite something," said Jock. "Did you know that, Mr. Bloomer?"

"As a matter of fact, I don't think I did before," said Bloomer. "But as of this morning…now I do. And all of us wish you very good travels and useful days as well, Jock."

Soon, workmen came and cleaned the glass and champagne off Jock's running plate, after which Emily and Bloomer whistled, and all the guests cheered and applauded for Jock too. Everyone could agree this day had been a great and powerful success.

"Now, ladies, gentlemen and engines," said the Fat Controller. "We are all adamantly eager to board Jock's very first train so as he may give us a splendid ride himself. But before we go any further, we must have our two ceremonious friends' photographs taken together."

"Oh, yes! Indeed we shall!" said Col. Drixon. "All the newspapers and even the tabloids shall make excellent use of such a picture to see."

"Oh, yes!" Jock whistled proudly. "Well, Bloomer? Care to step in?"

Bloomer just smiled. "Why, of course, sweetheart."

He then switched to the line right next to Jock, now as close as he could be to the brand-new engine. Then everyone watched as the photographer set up the tripod and looked into the camera.

"Steady now," said the photographer. "Lovely. That's it. Smile. Hold it…"

Then in the next moment, the cameras flashed, and the photograph was drawn out of the camera in moments.

"Lovely," the photographer declared with a smile.

And lovely it was. In the photograph, the two engines cast a delightful image that perfectly captured the past and present of locomotives; the fully restored vintage veteran Bloomer alongside the modern, freshly built newcomer Jock.

"Well, my goodness, everyone," Bloomer stated proudly. "I can only say it here and now. It's great to be an engine! To peep, puff and steam around all day!"

Once more, all the guests and engines cheered and rejoiced. Everything had gone perfectly, and so Jock's train was soon ready and all the guests gathered onboard his train too. The guards whistle blew, and with that, Jock set off to have his very first train to pull. Just as Bloomer felt, Jock had never felt so well in his life, pulling his very own train up and along the winding forest trails, over small hills, around the bends, through open fields, alongside steep cliffs of rock, then finally, all the way back to Arlesburgh West again. All the guests agreed it was a splendid ride, and they were all very pleased with Jock. All the engines, especially Jock, Bloomer and Emily were very, very happy with how the day had turned out, and they all knew this wonderful feeling would last for a good while yet for all of them to enjoy…

Later that evening, with all the railway's work done for the day, all the guests had gone home, and the other engines were returning to their sheds. Jock was soon settled in his shed along with Rex, Mike and Bert, all of whom were very pleased to have a new shed mate to be with. This was truly a wonderful day for them indeed.

Meanwhile, Bloomer had since gone back on his way along the Main Line, with Sir Robert in his cab, guiding him to just the place to be after today's wonderful events.

"You've done such a wonderful job today, Bloomer," said Sir Robert. "Your return to the rails couldn't have gone any better."

"Thank you, good sir," Bloomer smiled proudly. "I…I really can't say much more as to how I feel…it's…it's just wonderful.

"It certainly is, my friend," said Sir Robert. "And now, I shall bring you home…to Ulfstead Castle. Welcome to a new and wonderful life, Bloomer."

And so, after a steady and well-spent ride, Bloomer found himself going up the rounded hill, then sure enough, he found himself at Ulfstead Castle, his new home. Stephen, Glynn and Millie were all waiting for him and gave a very rousing welcome as he neared the platform.

"Hello! Welcome! Hi, Bloomer! Bonjour, mon ami," they said one after the other.

Bloomer just smiled and nodded to all of them as he stopped at the platform with a deep breath. From here on out, his transition to active service on the estate could truly begin. As he settled where he was, he took a glimpse at the castle and the vast estate all around him, feeling a new sense of belonging just as Stanley did when he found himself back at Great Waterton.

"So…this is Ulfstead Castle," Bloomer said surely. "Well...this is just the place, I'd say. Nice and big, and green…and truly wonderful…just like all three of you, Stephen, Glynn and Millie. I really look forward to working with all of you."

"So do we, Bloomer," said Stephen. "We're all so glad to have you in our family now."

"Oh, yes," said Glynn. "You're going to be very happy here, Bloomer. We promise."

"Oui. Very happy and really useful, Bloomer," Millie smiled. "Welcome home."

And so Bloomer took a deep breath and sighed, truly proud and happy with all he had fulfilled with Emily today, and so he made himself right at home on Ulfstead Castle's estate, most grateful and pleased to be running on the rails again. All the rest of Sodor would now be even grander with this truly wonderful engine as part of the railway from here on out.

Meanwhile, as the sun began to set, there was one other gathering at Arlesburgh. With their work now complete after such a spectacular day, Thomas, Emily, Percy, David and Beatrice were gathered together at the pier beside the Sea Emperor, all talking endlessly about the day's events, and all very happy with how it turned out.

"In all my years, I've never seen anything like today," Beatrice said proudly. "A LNWR Bloomer Class Tender Engine and a Stirling Single Engine both together…and here today, those two were none other than our very own Bloomer…and our truly lovely Emily the No. 12 Safety Engine of Sodor!"

"Such a proud and wonderful performance you gave us all, Emily," David smiled as he sat on her running plate. "My truest and most impeccable congratulations to you, my very best friend!"

Then he leaned in and kissed her cheek, to which Emily giggled dearly.

"Oh, thank you, David and Beatrice," she smiled proudly. "The whole Steam Team and more got to see us together, including you two, Thomas and Percy."

"Oh, Emily! Today was most amazing and breathtaking!" Thomas exclaimed happily. "You truly cast a wondrous sight wherever you went, and I am so very happy to have seen it."

"So am I, Emily," Percy squeaked cheerfully. "Bloomer is such an amazing engine! So rare and grand, and truly wonderful! Especially with you double-heading with him!"

"Oh, thank you, boys," Emily chimed and blew a kiss to them both. "Today was a truly wonderful day for me too. I'm so happy to have accompanied Bloomer today, and seeing how he took everything in. He really is going to be happy here."

"Just as Nia said two nights ago. It's truly an inspiration!" said Beatrice.

"It's been a sensation!" Paul remarked proudly, as Rebecca had said before.

To that, David went down to the Sea Emperor's deck and sat at his grand piano, then started playing a few notes.

"It's been a grand showing for Bloomer; A grand showing for Bloomer, I say," he chimed. Then the tune started, and David sang.

"It's been a grand showing for Bloomer,

Where Sodor's own Bloomer can reign.

On this fine Railway, all of us convey

With the breaking of our champagne."

Thomas, Emily and Percy started humming to the tune David played, then started singing along softly. Then their crews and Beatrice started clapping to the rhythm, absolutely delighted with how the day had turned out. Then Thomas, Emily, Percy, David and Beatrice finished the song together.

"Oh, Sodor's Very Own Bloomer-r-r-r!"

And so the wonderful day was concluded. Bloomer was now running on his own wheels again, with a whole new life ahead of him on Sodor, and Jock was now in active service right along with his new and old friend at the same time. This was indeed a momentous occasion for Sodor to see, and everyone was very pleased to have seen it themselves.

But today's events were only a part of the big surprises on Sodor this year. With Bloomer's return to service, there was an enormous lineup of new experiences for him to be had once the time came…but something even more significant and truly amazing was going to follow very soon. In just a few short days to follow, things were going to take a very different and exciting turn for five individuals on Sodor in particular, and for these five, there was going to be a most extraordinary prospect to be put forth…toward a new horizon.

We start off 2025 with a bang, having Bloomer and Jock be brought into active service on the same day. Granted, not everything is cheerful, as we tragically learned that Britt Allcroft, the wonderful woman who brought Thomas onto the television, passed away this past Christmas Day. The fact that I just so happened to upload a chapter about Dilly the Duck passing away on the same exact day that Britt Allcroft passed away, unbeknownst to all us, was certainly quite an unsettling coincidence when I heard about it. She was truly instrumental in shaping so many childhoods and Thomas fans' imaginations, so for that she will always be remembered fondly and with great devotion. Britt Allcroft, may you rest in peace, and thank you so much for everything. Now then, next story will be our 250th story, and as such, it's certainly going to be one of the longest stories we've ever done, and considering this year is also my 10th anniversary on this site, it only feels appropriate. Until then, tell us what you all thought of this story, and as always, stay safe.
