It's morning now, and Erin is standing in the kitchen, holding a steaming mug of coffee. Harper is sitting at the dining table, happily eating her breakfast.
Earlier that night, Erin had spent hours holding and comforting Jay as he cried. It had taken a long time, but she had finally managed to coax him to sleep, his head heavy on her lap.
Erin takes a sip of her coffee, still feeling tired from the previous night. She glances at Harper, who's shoveling oatmeal into her mouth.
"Don't eat so fast, sweetie," she says with a small smile. "You'll get a bellyache."
Harper just ignores her, shoveling another spoonful of oatmeal into her mouth, a bit landing on her chin.
Erin chuckles, "Nevermind, you're just like your dad."
Erin finishes her coffee and sets the empty mug down on the kitchen countertop. She hears the sound of water running upstairs, coming from the master bathroom.
Erin checks the time, it's only 7 AM. She wonders if Jay is already up and awake.
Just then, Jay appears at the top of the stairs, his hair still damp from the shower. He looks a bit more composed than he did the night before, but there are subtle signs of exhaustion in his eyes.
He glances at Erin and Harper, "Morning."
Erin's heart clenches slightly, seeing the fatigue in his eyes. "Morning," she says, her tone soft. "Did you sleep okay?"
Jay sat down, and nodded.
"Yeah, I woke when you moved me…"
Erin winces slightly, feeling bad for waking him. "Sorry about that," she says. "I didn't want to wake you, but my legs were going numb."
Jay shakes his head, "It's alright. I was probably gonna wake up soon anyway."
He reaches over and ruffles Harper's hair. "Morning, kiddo."
Harper grins up at him, her face still smeared with oatmeal. "Morning, Dada."
Later in the day, Erin is folding laundry in the bedroom when she hears raised voices coming from the other room. Jay is on the phone with the funeral director, arguing about something.
Suddenly, the door slams shut. Erin jumps, dropping the towel she was holding.
A moment later, Harper appears at the door, her little face squished against the wood.
"Mama?"
Erin moves quickly to the door and opens it, scooping Harper into her arms.
"Hey, sweetie. What's the matter? Were you trying to get in the room?"
Harper nods, her little fingers playing with the buttons on Erin's shirt. "Dada shut the door on me," she says, her bottom lip sticking out in a pout.
. "Hey, it's okay, sweetie. Dada was just on the phone and he didn't see you. He didn't mean to shut the door on you."
Harper nods slightly, still upset. She burrows her face into Erin's neck, clinging tightly to her.
Erin strokes her hair, "Hey, how about I take you out for some ice cream, hmm?"
Harper's face lights up, and she lifts her head from Erin's shoulder, "Ice-cream? Can I have peanut butter cup ice-cream?"
Erin chuckles, "Sure thing, kiddo. You can have whatever flavor you want."
She sets Harper down on the bed, "Let me go talk to Dada real quick, okay?"
Harper nods, her little legs swinging against the side of the bed.
Erin quickly exits the bedroom and heads towards the other room, where Jay is still on the phone.
She knocks softly on the door, opening it when she hears Jay call "Come in."
Erin pokes her head into the room, "Hey."
Jay looks up from his phone, "Hey. Sorry for slamming the door earlier. I didn't see Harper there."
