Chapter 11
Episode - Lady of the Lake
The Enchanted Forest
Hermione, Mulan, Emma, Mary Margaret, Aurora, and Prince Phillip all arrived at what seemed to be a village of crude dwellings.
"This is your sanctuary?" asked Hermione.
"Yes, it's not much, but it serves us." said Prince Phillip.
Then out of one of the dwellings came a knight in armor. He looked at Mary Margaret and it took him a moment but he recognized her.
"Princess Snow?"
Snow White then looked at him and recognized him.
"Lancelot?"
The two old friends embraced.
"Where have you been?" asked Lancelot. "I thought I would never see you again."
"I was in my Palace when the curse hit."
"Outside of the protective Dome that covered this area of the land." said Lancelot. "When the Evil Queen's curse engulfed this land we were all Frozen in time. Until recently when we were released. I found this place and then started Gathering refugees. Here, we live together, work together, and thrive together."
"This place doesn't really seem very protected." said Hermione. "How is it that this place is a safe haven as opposed to anywhere else?"
"Only that we've noticed that for some reason the ogres don't come near this place." said Mulan. "We don't know why. But nonetheless it works to our advantage for safety."
"Well, we can't stay here long." said Emma. "We need to find a way to cross Realms and get back to Storybrooke. The Evil Queen and my son are there."
"I'm sorry, I don't think we've met." said Lancelot.
Again introductions were spread around.
"Some of the people are a little apprehensive about having a witch within our midst." said Lancelot as he looked at Hermione.
"I understand. In my world I face that prejudice all the time." said Hermione. "But I can assure you I only use my power for good and I mean no harm to anyone in the village."
"I believe you." said Lancelot. "It's just we have had some trouble with another powerful sorceress that we are keeping in our prison."
"Who?" asked Mary Margaret.
"I believe you may know her as Cora." said Mulan.
Mary Margaret's jaw dropped with disbelief.
"Cora?" said Mary Margaret. "She's supposed to be dead."
"Yes, but unfortunately she is not." said Lancelot. "We found her shortly after the curse on this land was lifted. Fortunately for us we were able to contain her only on the grounds that she had been stripped of her magic. But we still recognized the danger that she was."
"Wait, I'm sorry, but who is Cora?" asked Emma with confusion.
"Regina's mother." said Mary Margaret. "Like Regina, she's a powerful sorceress."
"If she has truly been stripped of her magic then she is powerless and no threat to us." said Emma. "Like Regina back in Storybrooke."
"I think I know a way for us to cross realms." said Mary Margaret. "The enchanted wardrobe that we used to send you Emma to the state of Maine."
"Couldn't it only be used once?" asked Hermione.
"I don't know, but it is our best chance. And we have to take a look at it before we just rule it out. Emma, we're going home."
"Your Palace in your kingdom." said Lancelot. "It is a perilous Journey. I cannot permit you to go."
"With all due respect Sir Lancelot, we're not asking permission." said Emma with defiant authority.
"Of course." said Lancelot in a tone of reminding himself of his forgotten manners. "You are of course free to come and go as you please. However, I must insist that I have my bravest warrior accompany you. Mulan."
"If it is all the same," said Princess Aurora, "I wish to accompany them as well. Having awoken from my sleeping curse I just feel like I have all of this excess energy."
"If Aurora is going then I will go as well." said Philip.
"Very well." said Lancelot.
After a hearty meal of chimera meat, which tasted awful, they were then taken to a dwelling called the armory.
"Please choose your weapon for your journey." said Lancelot as he gestured to the selection of weapons that they had available.
"Choose wisely." said Mulan.
Mary Margaret took a sword and strapped the belt of the scabbard around her waist then picked up a bow and then shouldered a quiver of arrows. Emma pocketed a knife and then checked her 9 millimeter firearm.
"You taking any weapons, Hermione?"
"My wand is all I need." said Hermione with confidence.
"Follow my lead." said Mulan. "Step where I step, follow my instructions and you might survive."
"Thanks for the pep talk, but I think we can take care of ourselves." said Emma with confidence. "I just killed a dragon last week."
"Have you ever seen an ogre?" asked Mulan.
"Pretty sure I've dated a few."
"This is no joking matter Ms. Swan. They are fierce. They stand over 12 ft tall. They feel no pain, and they know no mercy. And if an ogre targets you as it's prey you either kill it or it will kill you."
"Such a large powerful creature," said Hermione, "its body would probably deflect most hexes and jinxes." she said, looking at her wand with skepticism. "Can they be killed the normal way like with any creature or is there a special technique for optimal effect?"
"Sword, spear, or Arrow. You have to hit them in the eye." said Mary Margaret.
"Like with a dragon." said Hermione.
"Bullets should work." Mary Margaret said to Emma.
They began their Trek into the woods in the direction of Snow White's Palace. They kept up a reasonable chatter. Though they were told to speak quietly as loud noises attract the ogres. Hermione explained about the Wizarding World and how things worked there. Emma went on about muggle life in their Realm. Mary Margaret explained about her life under the curse. Aurora was having difficulty sleeping as apparently anytime she fell asleep she had nightmares, particularly a nightmare about being trapped in a red room with no doors or windows that was filled with fire.
Hermione needed to use the bathroom so she excused herself promising that she would be careful.
Once she had done her business she was making her way back to the group where her figurative spider senses were tingling. She gripped the handle of her wand where she stood completely still.
All of a sudden, sensing an attack she jumped out from behind a tree just as an arrow came flying at her but with a flick of her wand the arrow was deflected.
She was then face to face with a man holding a bow and arrow. And then a look of Horror on his face.
"Oh my goodness, my lady." said the man full of remorse. "My most sincere apologies. I did not immediately see you. I thought you were some manner of Beast."
"You must be really on edge." said Hermione. "I wasn't making any noise."
She walked towards the man with her wand at her side, ready to stun him at a moment's notice should it have been necessary.
"May I have your name please, my lady?" asked the man, as several other men then came out from behind the trees and stood behind him.
"Hermione Granger." Hermione responded.
"Robin of Locksley."
He took her hand and kissed it like a noble gentleman.
It was then that the rest of the group came out from around the corner. Snow White had ready an arrow in her bow, Emma pointing her gun and the rest of them wielding swords.
Hermione gave a hand signal signaling that it was okay.
"I see you're not traveling alone, my lady." said Robin of Locksley.
"Who are you?" asked Mulan.
"Robin of Locksley." he introduced one more time. "These are some of my Merry Men."
"Robin of Locksley, you said?" asked Emma.
"Yes, why?" asked Robin.
"As in Robin Hood?" Emma clarified.
"I see my reputation precedes me." he said.
"Allow me to introduce everyone one more time." said Hermione. "This is Emma Swan, Sheriff of Storybrooke, Princess Aurora, Prince Phillip, Milan and Mary Margaret."
Robin Hood then looked at Mary Margaret with a confused face while he scrutinized her.
"Your Highness, I did not immediately recognize you with your short hair." said Robin Hood. "You are Princess Snow White. Before your stepmother cursed this land there was a time when you and I graced wanted posters side by side. And me and my merry men spent many a day being chased by her black knights."
"I was falsely accused." said Snow White with a smile as she walked forward and shook his hand. "You on the other hand are a thief."
"An honorable Thief that steals from the rich and gives to the poor."
"Probably not a whole lot of that 'post curse'."
"If you all seek Sanctuary I can lead you to the Dark One's old castle, which he is no longer using, where me and my merry men can provide you with food and shelter."
"We just came from a sanctuary with food and shelter. We are on a quest to find a means to cross realms."
"I know of No Such magic that can do so."
"It's all right. We think we know something that might work. We're heading for my Palace."
"The old Palace, your highness? That is a very perilous journey. It will not be wise."
"Me, Emma, and Hermione need to get back to our loved ones. To do that we need to cross realms. "
"I understand." said Robin Hood with sympathy. "But if it's all the same we will walk with you. Safety in numbers."
They all started to walk for a while. The sun had set and the evening Twilight in the west kept getting darker.
"We should probably make camp for the night." suggested Mary Margaret.
"I'll build a fire." said Mulan.
Mulan created a makeshift fire pit surrounded by stones where she filled it with kindling and sticks and then some pieces of dry wood. She then attempted to make bright hot Sparks with a piece of flint and Metal.
"If you will allow me, may I make the fire by Magic?" Hermione offered.
"Very well." said Mulan.
Hermione pointed her wand at the fireplace.
"Incendio!" she said in a loud clear voice.
A Fireball then shot from the end of Hermione's wand and ignited the wood.
"Thank you." said Mulan.
They sat in companionable silence for a little while.
Mulan then looked at Hermione's wand that she continued to hold in her hand.
"Life must be very convenient where you come from." Mulan commented. "To be able to have just about anything with a wave of a wand."
"Magic has limitations." said Hermione. "It can't do everything. And not just anyone can do it. 99% of the world's population cannot use Magic. And those of us who can, magic is not easy, it takes years of training to be able to become competent. And that's just me, I was the most talented witch in my year."
"An educational institute?" asked Mulan.
"Yes." said Hermione with a smile. "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and wizardry. The finest School of magic in all the realms."
"Can you tell me more about it?" asked Aurora, curious.
"Well, it is a large Castle." Hermione explained. "It was built approximately A Thousand Years Ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the time. Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. Yes, they were the four most powerful wizards of the time and they built the castle and decided to start a tradition, where they would bring young children from around the country to the castle and teach them everything they know about magic. Which is what created the four houses of Hogwarts. They're kind of like fraternities. Now it is determined what house you belong in depending on your personality and attribute qualities and virtues. Each of the four founders of the castle believed that only certain students were to learn magic. Gordric Gryffindor, he believed that magical learning should favor children who are brave and courageous, and that's the house that I'm in. Rowena Ravenclaw, believed that magical learning should be for those with more intellectual aptitude. Salazar Slytherin, he believed that anyone whose family was not of wizard heritage should not be incorporated into the more older and longstanding wizard genealogies. Helga Hufflepuff, she basically freely accepted anyone who was not of the other three categories and treated them as equals.
"Anyway, our school has always been prided as the best, we have the finest educational curriculum, the most capable teachers, and as such we have always turned out the best alumni.
"Anyway, I am the most talented in my year. Magic always just came so naturally to me. And as I said it has its limits. I can make a water kettle boil in a second. I can create water. I can make plants grow fast. I can heal wounds. Levitate objects. I can teleport."
"And I assume that you could also do many other things than what you just mentioned, and use your power for evil if you were so inclined." said Emma with a grave accusatory tone to her voice.
"If I was so inclined, yes." said Hermione. "But of course we are all responsible for our actions. With great power comes great responsibility. And unfortunately it is all too common for witches and Wizards to turn dark and commit the very crimes you just mentioned. I personally have never abused my power before. I've never used my magic to play a prank on someone. I would never use my magic to hurt anyone. And I would most certainly never take a life if I could help it."
"Fascinating." said aurora.
Aurora then let out a big yawn and her eyes and head kept drooping.
"Aurora, you should get some sleep."
"I'm afraid to sleep." said Aurora. "The nightmares keep persisting."
Prince Philip came over and put his arms around her.
"Now that I think of it, my mother Briar Rose who was also under the curse claimed that she had these nightmares after she woke up."
"Hermione," said Prince Phillip, "you are an expert on magic, do you know anything about this fiery Red Room in a dream and the sleeping curse."
"I know nothing of a sleeping curse. Or fiery red room." said Hermione. "There are of course a number of spells and potions that induce sleep. Some very deep long lasting sleep, but never a permanent death-like sleep that could only be awakened by true love's kiss. Magic in this world and Magic in The Wizarding World in my Realm seems to work differently."
"Hey Robin Hood," said Emma, trying to change the subject, "why were you so on edge when you fired an arrow at Hermione."
"One of the reasons that me and my merry men were out here, we were attacked by a flying demon in a tattered black cloak."
"The Wraith." said Mary Margaret. "I guess it's still out there."
That was when they heard a Roar that was close by.
"Ogre." said Robin Hood in warning. "Run!"
They all started running. They could hear the loud thumping of the giant footsteps.
"Split up!" shouted Emma.
Phillip, Aurora, Emma, Mary Margaret, and Hermione broke off from the rest as they went in two different directions.
Hermione took up the rear.
They ran for about a minute when Hermione accidentally tripped and fell and landed face first in the grass. She was now kicking herself for not casting the 'Muffliato' spell.
She rolled over onto her back and looked behind her where she then saw one of the most hideous creatures that she had ever seen coming through the trees. It was enormous, humanoid, almost troll like, but seemed to be far more fierce.
She was petrified with fear. She froze up and shut down as she just couldn't process the horror in front of her.
There were then several loud bangs of a gunshot. An arrow then hit the creature, but all the shots had missed the eyes.
Finally Hermione had came to her senses and pointed her wand.
"Stupify!"
The jet of red light hit the ogre and just bounced off.
"Impedimenta! Reducto!"
Nothing seemed to work. As she was right this creature's body was clearly resistant to most hexes and jinxes.
The creature then swung at her where she backed off just enough for the only part of her body that was hit was her hand knocking her wand out of her hand.
Her wand flew off into the darkness and landed somewhere.
Petrified with fear she froze up and shut down as the creature then roared at the top of her lungs deafening her ears.
Another arrow, a few more gunshots, all missed the eyes.
Hermione raised her hand up in a defensive posture. Believing that this was the end that she was about to die. She still had Bellatrix Lestrange's old wand in her beaded handbag, but she had no time to reach for it. She said a silent prayer to Ron that she loved him and with one last desperate effort wished that she could hit this creature with a spell powerful enough to stop it.
Miraculously, something happened that Hermione had never done before. A fireball so hot it was white hot flame magically conjured in the palm of her hand about the size of a basketball and shot itself at the ogre, hitting the ogre right in the eye. The ogre's head was blasted apart, splattering them all with blood and guts.
Hermione was stuck between disgust at all of the smelly filth and surprise at the extraordinary Display of Power that she exhibited.
"How in the world did I do that?" she asked out loud with astonishment.
"All hail Hermione Granger the ogre Slayer." said Emma with a sarcastic smile.
"You're pretty powerful Hermione Granger." said Phillip.
"There are some wizard communities in my world that practice wandless Magic, but I've never done anything like that before."
"I think you must have harnessed the magic of this world and bent it to your will, not your own magic within your own body." said Mary Margaret.
Emma picked up Hermione's wand. Held it by the handle and offered it back to Hermione. But before Hermione could take it the wand emitted a spherical pulse wave in all directions that knocked everyone backwards.
"Whoa we better be careful." said Phillip. "I think your wand was still a little revved up."
"No," said Hermione as she looked at Emma. "The wand has no magic. It's just a tool to channel one's own Magic."
"So what are you saying?" said Emma. "That I'm a sorceress?"
"Possible." said Hermione but she then took the wand back.
They were all still covered in ogre guts.
"Scourgify!"
Hermione then waved the wand and they were all clean with a flash of light.
Robin hood, his merry men, and Mulan then all showed up.
"Well good work." said Robin Hood. "You slayed the beast."
"I guess I just got lucky." said Hermione.
They continued to walk until they came over a hill where in the distance they saw, perched on the edge of a cliff, a castle.
"That's it." said Mary Margaret to Emma with a smile of remembrance. "That's our home."
They entered the castle. The sun had gone down so it was dark.
"Lumos!" said Hermione and her wand lit up with a flashlight effect.
Without exploring the whole place Mary Margaret led them through a route through all the corridors that clearly she was familiar with.
"You have a lovely Palace, Mary Margaret." said Hermione. "Reminds me of parts of Hogwarts."
They then entered a room. It appeared to be a nursery. There was a baby's crib. A rocking chair. And a selection of stuffed animals and toys on some shelves.
Emma walked over to the cabinet that had been carved out of a very wide tree trunk.
"I recognize this from Henry's story book." said Emma as she then placed her hand on the cabinet.
"We will guard the entrance." Mulan said speaking for the others and they all left, leaving behind Emma, Mary Margaret, and Hermione.
Mary Margaret paused and looked around the room with her face indicating a look of solemn nostalgia.
"This was your Nursery, Emma." said Mary Margaret. "I never thought I would see this place ever again."
"This is where I slept?" asked Emma.
"Not even." said Mary Margaret. "You didn't even spend one night in here. The curse was upon us. I was in labor. I gave birth and then we put you through the Wardrobe."
She touched The rocking Chair and then looked in another wardrobe that was filled with small dresses for little girls.
"This room was all yours, before you were born." Mary Margaret continued. "This was the life that I wanted you to have. This was where I was going to teach you how to walk. Teach you how to talk. Where I would teach you to dance. Where I was going to dress you up for your first ball. We never got to do any of it. Be a family."
"We have a family." said Emma. "David and Henry. Back in Storybrooke. And right now they need us to get back there. As soon as we can get this to work." said Emma as she pointed at the Wardrobe.
Hermione waved her Wand Over the wardrobe.
"Specialis revelio!"
There was a Rippling in the air around where the wand had been waved.
"I'm sensing tiny minute traces of magic emanating from the wardrobe, but nowhere near powerful enough to cross realms."
"I'm guessing there's no 'on' switch." said Emma.
"I think it's a little bit more complicated than that." said Mary Margaret.
"Hermione, do you think your magic can get it to work again?"
"In order to do that I'd first need to know how this thing works. Unfortunately I can't just wave my wand and think for this thing to work. Plus my magic from our world and the magic in this world seem to work differently. They may be incompatible."
"We'll have to get it back to the island. Hopefully someone there has access to enough magic to get this thing working again."
"How are we even going to move this thing anyway?"
"With the help of an old friend." said a voice from behind them.
When they turned around they were face to face with Lancelot.
"Lancelot?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I heard about the ogre attack and I felt an irresistible compulsion to catch up with you and ascertain that everything was all right. I should have just gone with you from the start myself."
"Well," said Hermione, "before we were interrupted I was going to suggest that I could move the Wardrobe with magic."
"Well I'm sure we will figure it out."
"So," said Lancelot as he approached the Wardrobe to scrutinize it, "this is the famous magical wardrobe that transported young Emma across realms. Remarkable. And other than it's one time use now used up it's in mint condition. There must be a way to get to work again."
"Why are you so interested in the wardrobe?" asked Hermione a tone of suspicion in her voice.
"In Camelot we have a lot of magical items, I have always been an admirer of such things. And this, an enchanted wardrobe carved from an enchanted tree with the ability to cross realms. Such an item is fascinating. Plus, my concern is about Snow and her daughter. I just want you all to get home to your family."
Unnoticed by anyone else, Hermione had cast a scanning spell. She immediately sensed from Lancelot that there was something off about him. She detected magical concealment.
Hermione then immediately pointed her wand at Lancelot.
"Who are you?" she demanded in a firm tone.
"What is the meaning of this?" asked Lancelot.
"Hermione, what are you doing?" asked Mary Margaret.
"Verdimillious!"
A jet of green light hit Lancelot and with a static-like flicker he magically transformed into Cora.
"Clever girl." said Cora admiringly.
With a wave of Cora's hand Hermione felt an invisible force trying to push her against the wall but with a wave of her wand she countered it.
Hermione then shot a jet of red light from her wand that hit Cora square in the chest and she was blasted back against the wall.
"Impressive." complimented Cora.
"Where's Lancelot?"
"Oh he's dead. I kill him a long time ago."
"And you've been posing as him ever since?"
"Well they wouldn't listen to me. And besides, every Kingdom needs a hero."
"What do you want, and why are you here?"
"I've been looking for a way to cross realms for quite some time. I want to see my daughter. And my grandson Henry."
In one quick motion Mary Margaret pulled an arrow from her quiver, loaded it into her bow and let it fly. In a fraction of a second Cora dodged out of the way and caught the arrow with her bare hand.
Emma fired her gun but the bullets were deflected with a wave of Cora's hand.
Hermione was scared. Though she was confident, competent, and talented with her own magical abilities, she had never fought a witch or wizard using such powerful wandless Magic.
Cora and Hermione exchanged a few offensive and defensive spells back and forth.
"Well, you are one talented sorceress." said Cora. "Your wand, your style of magic. I've met your kind before. One Tom Riddle."
"You know the Dark Lord?" asked Hermione.
"I wouldn't call us friends, but we were mutual acquaintances. Tell me, how is he these days?"
"Dead." said Hermione. "Let's just say he went too far and Karma caught up with him."
"The Dark Lord is dead?" asked Cora with skepticism. "That's impossible. He split his soul in order to Anchor himself to life."
"That's where you're wrong. Me and my friends hunted down the horcruxes. We found all six and destroyed them."
And in a moment of arrogant gloating Hermione decided to go on and explain in further detail.
"The diary, the Peveril ring, Slytherin's locket, Hufflepuff's cup, Ravenclaw's tiara, and the snake Nagini."
"Oh, but that's where you're wrong my dear. Because I just happened to know what object he made his first horcrux. And I can assure you, it wasn't any of those things. One of those items that you just referred to was not a real horcrux."
"What are you talking about?"
"I happen to know what Lord Voldemort's first horcrux was. The item that no Witch or wizard is without, the source and control of their power."
"What?" pressed Hermione as she pointed her wand at Cora.
And that's when Cora looked directly at Hermione's wand.
"His wand my dear. And if it is not destroyed, then there is no way that the Dark Lord is dead."
Hermione then became distracted as she pondered this revelation of information.
The distraction was all that Cora needed to levitate Mary Margaret and Emma off the ground and then start to force choke them like Darth Vader on Star Wars.
Hermione was about to jinx Cora when Cora threatened her.
"Stop!"
Hermione paused, not daring to make a move.
"Give me your wand girl!" Demanded Cora. "Or I will kill them."
"You're a monster!" Hermione insulted.
Hermione dropped her wand on the ground between Cora and herself.
Hermione then cast a spell wandless from her hand. An invisible blast of kinetic Force Threw Cora into the wall where she then lost her focus on Mary Margaret and Emma.
Emma then feeling that she needed to prevent Cora from Crossing realms ignited the wood of the enchanted wardrobe with a flame from a cigarette lighter she had in her pocket.
Hermione then used telekinesis to pull her wand from the floor to her hand where she then attempted to hex Cora again. Cora deflected it with a spell. This went back and forth for a few seconds while the Wardrobe was then engulfed in flames.
"No!" shouted Cora and denial.
That was when Mulan, Phillip, Robin Hood, and his merry men all came into the room brandishing weapons.
Cora feeling that she was outmatched then said, "This isn't over!"
And with a wave of her hand she vanished to thin air with a swirl of purple smoke.
Hermione then extinguished the Flames with a wave of her wand but the cabinet was damaged Beyond repair. Hermione then attempted several forms of transfiguration and repairing spells, but none of which had any measurable effect on the wardrobe's remains.
"Lancelot was one of the most noble knights I had ever met."
"How could I be so blind?" Mulan reprimanded herself. "I should have known that it was cora."
Well if you be 100% honest and fair with yourself," said Emma, "the whole shapeshifting thing kind of threw me off as well."
"What are we going to tell the people on the island?" asked Mulan.
"The truth. That Lancelot was cut down in honorable combat by a terrible villain. That he died a noble death."
"Cora is still out there. We need to find her."
"And I need to find out if she has any more information on the Dark Lord." said Hermione.
The conversation carried on. A discussion of a new leader. Someone that the people would trust and follow. Almost immediately everyone elected Mary Margaret. As the rightful heir to the throne. But she argued that they were going to find a way to cross Realms soon, so therefore it would not be right to elect someone who would soon be leaving. Mary Margaret then recommended Prince Phillip.
Ultimately the decision was laid to rest and that they would think about it later.
Hermione was about to leave when she paused to eavesdrop on Emma and Margaret's continued conversation.
"I'm sorry I torched our ride home." said Emma. "I didn't know whether or not Hermione would win the fight and I couldn't let Cora get to Henry."
"You had to put Henry first." said Mary Margaret understanding.
Hermione was a little upset at Emma for destroying the wardrobe, but she couldn't criticize this mother and daughter. Especially after what they went through with the curse.
Emma had a sad look on her face as she looked at Mary margaret.
"I was angry for so long!" Said Emma with emotion in her voice. "Wondering how you could possibly choose to let me grow up without you!"
But she looked around at the nursery. The private Sanctuary That was supposed to be hers in the Royal life that she was supposed to live.
"But just looking around at this." She gestured to the room and everything in it. "You gave up everything for me and you're still doing that. I'm sorry, I'm not good at this. I guess I just…I'm not used to someone putting me first!
Mary Margaret walk towards her daughter and wrapped her arms around her. Emma returned to the hug.
"Will get used to it." said Mary Margaret in a reprimanding tone as though to teach her daughter to just suck it up and take it. Though she had a humorous smile on her face when she said it.
Hermione smiled at this. She could only imagine the bond that these two people have. She herself had been separated from her parents. For most of the Year by being in a magical boarding school. And then during the war when she had to modify her parents memories so that Voldemort wouldn't use them against her. Fortunately, following the Battle for Hogwarts, Hermione went to Australia and tracked down Wendell and Monica Wilkins and restored their memories.
