Chapter Six: The Storm of Shadows Part 1
Next Day - Konohagakure no Sato - Front Gate
By the time Naruto arrived, everyone else was already waiting. Scrolls strapped to his body, Naruto took a moment to observe the tanto now fastened to Sasuke's back, though he didn't pay it much mind. "Alright, it's time to depart," Shisui said, taking command with his usual calm authority. "Diamond formation around the client. Stay alert." The group set off on their first mission, and silence quickly settled over them as they moved through the dense forests, the minutes turning into hours. Shisui's voice broke the stillness. "I didn't know you used a tanto, Sasuke," he remarked with a small, fond smile. "I've been practicing privately for the last few years," Sasuke replied casually, though his eyes remained sharp. Shisui raised an eyebrow, turning to face Sasuke while walking backward. "If you ever need any pointers, come to me," he said with a grin before turning back around. Shikamaru gave Sasuke a lazy grin. "Think that sword's enough to beat Naruto?" he teased, but Sasuke didn't take the bait. Naruto, unfazed, added, "Sasuke's been drawing our spars to a tie even without the tanto." He neglected to mention that he always fought with resistance seals on.
Sasuke smirked. "Worried, blondie?" Naruto shrugged. "Numerous factors could change the outcome." Sasuke's smirk faded, uninterested in continuing the banter. Boring. Breaking the tension, Naruto turned to their client. "What's it like in Wave, Tazuna-san?" Tazuna hesitated for a moment, a forced smile tugging at his lips. "Financially, things are tough. But with the completion of the bridge, it should turn around." Shisui's keen eyes narrowed slightly. The man was hiding something, but as long as it didn't affect the mission, Shisui didn't care.
Suddenly, a surge of overwhelming chakra flooded the air, freezing Shisui in his tracks. The oppressive force reminded him of only a select few, all as powerful as the Hokage himself. His eyes darted upward, widening at the sight of a massive cumulonimbus cloud stretching as far as the eye could see, infused with chakra. Then, everything happened too fast. The ground trembled violently, shattering beneath them. Shisui's instincts took over, grabbing Tazuna and pulling him to safety in the blink of an eye. A blinding flash of lightning erupted from the clouds, crashing down relentlessly. Naruto leaped from rock to rock, barely dodging the torrent of strikes, but his movements grew slower, more desperate. A lightning strike finally caught him, sending him plunging lifelessly into the sea below.
Sasuke, adrenaline surging through him, moved with assassin-like precision, weaving through the destruction with cold efficiency. Behind him, Shikamaru was in a daze, trying to process what had just happened—a calm mission shattered by what seemed like divine wrath raining from the heavens. But he refused to be a victim. Shisui's Sharingan spun wildly, and in a heartbeat, his Mangekyō Sharingan activated, the familiar green skeletal form of Susano'o enveloping him and Tazuna. The crackling bolts of lightning slammed into its protective shield, but the chakra construct stood firm. When the storm finally subsided, the land was unrecognizable. A ruined forest of charred trees and torn earth stretched out before Shisui, but more concerningly, there was no trace of his team. He let his Mangekyō fade, scanning the horizon with his normal Sharingan, but the destruction had erased any sign of Naruto, Sasuke, or Shikamaru.
"We're returning to Konoha," Shisui declared, his voice steady but sharp with urgency. "This mission is over." "No!" Tazuna's voice trembled with desperation. "My people need me! We can't go back!" Shisui turned to him, Sharingan glinting dangerously. "What did you just say?" Tazuna hesitated but stood his ground. "Gato's company has taken control of our village. He's a tyrant. My people are suffering while he profits." Shisui's eyes narrowed. "Gato? You mean the former S-Rank Iwagakure nuke-nin?" The revelation hit Shisui like a punch. Gato, once a powerful ninja, had amassed a fortune so large he'd paid Iwa to remove his bounty, becoming the first nuke-nin to do so. Shisui's hand shot out, grabbing Tazuna by the collar and yanking him close. Fury burned in his eyes. "You put my team in danger for your selfish mission?" He shoved Tazuna to the ground, disgusted. "We're going back to Konoha," he repeated, more forcefully this time. But in the pit of his stomach, Shisui knew things weren't that simple anymore.
"I can't let that happen" A new presence.
Shisui turned around to face the figure. A tall woman with long black hair tied in a high ponytail, her cold blue eyes locked on Shisui; Wearing a sleeveless black battle dress, fitted for agility, with reinforced shoulder armor and a high collar. Her forearms are wrapped in dark bandages, and she sports fingerless gloves. She has black leggings, knee-high boots, and a crimson sash around her waist, symbolizing a break from Kirigakure. A long, dark coat with a high slit trails behind her, Shisui knew this person as this person knew Shisui "Shisui of the Body Flicker." "Kira the Queen of Storms" The wind howled through the forest as Shisui and Kira faced each other, the tension palpable. Shisui's eyes glowed red, his Sharingan spinning as he sized up his opponent. Kira's cold blue eyes narrowed, electricity crackling faintly around her fingertips.
Without a word, they moved. Shisui vanished in a blur of speed, Body Flicker activating as he reappeared behind Kira, kunai in hand. But Kira was ready. A bolt of lightning erupted from her palm, forcing Shisui to twist mid-air, narrowly dodging the strike. He landed gracefully, eyes sharp, but Kira was already closing the distance. She launched a series of high, precise kicks, each one fast and fluid. Shisui deflected them effortlessly, but the force of her blows sent shockwaves through the ground. He countered with a flurry of kunai, aiming for vital points, yet Kira weaved through them, her movements almost dancing.
A powerful gust of wind swirled as Kira formed hand seals in a flash. "Raiton: Storm Surge!" A torrent of lightning-infused wind shot toward Shisui. He dodged, but the edge of the attack grazed his arm, numbing it slightly. Gritting his teeth, Shisui flickered again, reappearing above her, a fireball in his hands. "(Katon: Gōkakyū no Jutsu) Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu!" The flames roared down at Kira, but she raised her hand calmly, a wall of swirling wind and lightning forming in front of her. The fireball collided, exploding into smoke and debris, but neither combatant flinched. As the smoke cleared, the two stood at a distance, neither willing to give an inch. Shisui knew he could press the attack, but something held him back. Kira smirked slightly, her guard still up, yet her eyes softened for just a moment. "This isn't the time, Shisui," Kira said, her voice calm but laced with warning. "Not yet." Shisui lowered his hand, sensing the truth in her words. "Next time, then." With a final glance, Kira turned, her coat billowing in the wind as she vanished into the trees. Shisui remained still, watching her retreat before flickering away himself, the battle unresolved—for now.
With Naruto
The sound of waves crashing was the first thing Naruto registered, faint but constant, as he slowly regained consciousness. His vision blurred, and as he struggled to sit up, he noticed blood streaming from what had been a severe wound, now mostly healed. He glanced around, trying to make sense of his surroundings.
Crumbling stone walls, overgrown with moss and vines, suggested that this place had once been grand but had long since fallen into ruin. The remnants of intricate spiral symbols still adorned the walls, a symbol of his heritage—the Uzumaki clan. He was in Uzushiogakure, the ruined village of his ancestors. Buildings sagged under the weight of time, rooftops shattered and walls collapsed from the ravages of war. The streets, once alive with activity, were now desolate and uneven, choked with debris. Seals, ancient and faded, adorned the walls, their power long diminished but still flickering faintly, casting ghostly light in the darker alleys.
Naruto stood in silence, his mind racing as he processed it all. From sparring with Sasuke to the sudden, overwhelming attack that had scattered his team, he had somehow ended up here—at the shores of his clan's homeland. The village's harbor, once a bustling port, now lay eerily still. Broken piers stretched out into the ocean like skeletal fingers, and the remains of ships lay half-buried in sand, their masts snapped.
As he wandered through the ruins, flashes of what might have been filled his mind, as though the village itself was showing him its last moments. The heart of the village—the main hall where the Uzumaki elders once gathered—was nothing more than a pile of rubble. Yet, fragments of walls still stood, etched with fuinjutsu formulas that had once protected the village. Brushing his hand against one of the seals, Naruto felt a strange connection to it, as if the knowledge of its purpose flowed into him effortlessly. The village seemed to mourn its own destruction, a sense of deep sorrow hanging in the air.
He picked up a scroll from the ground, its paper yellowed and brittle with age. A multi-use barrier technique, modified for versatility. Tucking it into his pack, he continued his walk through the ruins until his eyes locked on something in the distance: a massive whirlpool, churning endlessly beyond the village's coast. The whirlpool, a natural defense of Uzu no Kuni, still stood strong even after the village had fallen—a symbol of the Uzumaki's once-great power.
With Sasuke and Shikamaru
Sasuke and Shikamaru sat in front of a crackling campfire, the only sounds around them being the occasional crackle of burning wood and the rhythmic lapping of the nearby waves. Across from them, a new addition to their group—Haku, a Kiri hunter-nin—sat quietly. Haku had found them after the devastating storm of lightning, his mask cracked, likely from a battle he had fought prior to finding them. He had provided food and helped set up camp, but the air was still thick with tension.
"What the hell happened back there?" Shikamaru finally asked, breaking the silence.
Haku's expression darkened. "I was part of a squad hunting an S-Rank nuke-nin named Kira Itou, also known as the Queen of Storms. We had no idea how powerful she was. She tore through my squad, but just when we thought we had the upper hand, she unleashed something—some kind of jutsu—that created that storm you saw. I'm certain her body can't handle all that chakra output. Right now, her tenketsu must be in disarray, which means soon would be the best time for me to strike."
Sasuke looked at him skeptically. "You're alone?" Haku's gaze met Sasuke's, unwavering. "She wiped out an entire squad of hunter-nin. Even with just a day of rest, she could probably recover enough to take us all on." "So what are you suggesting?" Sasuke asked. "You think we should just give up?" Haku shook his head. "No. But if you're smart, you wait for her moment of weakness." Shikamaru leaned forward. "What do you know about her?" "Kira is working for Gato," Haku explained. "But there are signs she's involved with some larger group. My mission was to eliminate her, but everything about this situation feels like overkill—she's here to kill a bridge builder, Tazuna."
Sasuke and Shikamaru exchanged a glance. "Tazuna hired Konoha for protection. Our sensei, Shisui Uchiha, is with him." The name gave Haku pause, his mind flashing back to the end of the Kiri bloodline wars. He remembered the battlefield, but more importantly, he remembered Shisui, a friend and ally during that time. "Shisui is your sensei?" he asked, a faint smile appearing. They nodded, and Haku's expression shifted. "If Shisui is involved, we might have a chance. We should find him and regroup. Together, we can stop Kira."
Konohagakure – Hokage Tower
In the Hokage's office, Dragon and Kakashi stood before Minato, who sat with his fingers interlocked, deep in thought. They had all felt the immense chakra disturbance, even from miles away. Reports of destruction were coming in, miles of forest leveled in the aftermath. "Any sign of Shisui or his team?" Minato asked.
Dragon shook his head. "None, sir. Our sensors picked up traces of their chakra, but rogue ninjas have been spotted in the area. It's like they're trying to block off that part of the forest." Minato's mind raced. He couldn't afford to wait any longer. "Send Akira and a team of earth-users to repair the damage. I want two platoons of ANBU dispatched immediately to search for Shisui and his team. We need to handle this before things escalate further." Dragon and Kakashi both nodded, leaving the office swiftly. Minato reached out, trying to sense the tag he had placed on Naruto, but the connection felt... off. Something was wrong, but without more information, all he could do was wait.
The Next Day - Uzu no Kuni - Uzushiogakure no Sato - with Naruto
Naruto pressed deeper into the ruins of Uzushiogakure, his heart racing as he uncovered knowledge that surpassed anything found in Konoha's fuinjutsu texts. Scrolls on barriers, intricate arrays, and the systemic functionality of seals surrounded him, each promising to unlock secrets long forgotten. He meticulously stored away every piece of information, the weight of it invigorating his resolve. As he ventured into the depths of the main clan building, he stumbled upon a large, weathered array etched into the stone floor. Though time had taken its toll, a faint pulse of energy indicated that the array was still active. Curiosity piqued, he knelt beside it, tracing the intricate kanji with his fingers, deciphering the meanings behind each symbol. The knowledge flowed into his mind like a rush of water, filling him with purpose. Once he absorbed the information, he bit into his finger, drawing blood as he prepared to activate the array. The metallic taste stung, but it ignited the latent power within him, setting the stage for what was to come.
Naruto stepped into the vault, the heavy stone doors groaning as they closed behind him, sealing him inside. The air was immediately different—colder, denser, as if the weight of centuries bore down on him. A faint glow emanated from the walls, pulsing with chakra, casting a ghostly light on the intricate seals inscribed into the stone. These were not ordinary walls. They were alive with ancient power, watching him, waiting for him to make his next move. His footsteps echoed as he ventured deeper, the sound swallowed by the vastness of the underground chamber. A fine mist clung to the floor, swirling around his ankles like cold fingers, but there was no wind, no source for it. It felt as though it was alive, reacting to his presence, or perhaps to the blood in his veins—the blood of the Uzumaki. The thought sent a shiver down his spine. He couldn't help but feel like an intruder, stepping into a past that had long been forgotten, a past that had fought to remain hidden. The deeper he went, the more overwhelming the atmosphere became. The walls hummed with chakra, the glow of ancient seals growing brighter, more aggressive. He glanced at them, recognizing some, but most were far beyond his knowledge—symbols of power lost to time, techniques buried with the fall of Uzushiogakure.
Then he saw them.
Rows of scrolls, each one locked in place on stone pedestals, wrapped tightly in layers of sealing chakra, shimmering faintly in the dim light. These weren't just any scrolls; they radiated danger. Naruto felt it in his bones. These were the Uzumaki clan's most forbidden techniques, jutsu too powerful or too dangerous to ever be used again. Even standing near them made his skin tingle with unease, as if they were whispering promises of untold power, urging him to reach out and break their bindings.
But he knew better.
At the heart of the vault was a massive spiral engraving, the Uzumaki clan's symbol, etched into the floor in vibrant red, the color unnervingly fresh, as though it had only just dried. The spiral's design led his eyes to a central altar, raised on a platform of black stone. There, bound in chakra-infused chains, lay the largest of the scrolls, its surface dark and worn, etched with age and power. Naruto's heart pounded in his chest as he approached. The air around the altar was different—thicker, heavier. It felt as though the scroll itself was alive, guarding secrets that should never be spoken. He reached out, his fingers brushing the edge of the chains, and in that moment, a wave of energy pulsed through him, forcing him to step back. The scroll seemed to react to him, the chains rattling slightly as if testing his resolve. He could feel the power locked inside—raw, ancient, terrifying. It called to him, not in words, but in a primal pull that he could barely resist. His hand hovered over the seals that bound it, and for a moment, he was tempted. All of the clan's knowledge, all of its lost history, lay before him, waiting to be claimed.
But with that knowledge came danger. He could feel it—something dark, something twisted in the seals, like a trap laid for anyone foolish enough to take what was not meant to be taken. He clenched his fist and withdrew his hand. Naruto scanned the rest of the room. Scattered along the walls were smaller scrolls, some half-buried in debris, others flickering faintly with energy. But what caught his eye were the faint remnants of storage seals, barely visible beneath layers of dust. They were weak, almost lifeless, but still intact. His fingers traced one of them carefully. It was an advanced design, one meant to hold something far more dangerous than any weapon. As he knelt down, his hand brushed over the remnants of a protective seal, long since faded but still carrying the weight of its original purpose. Whatever had been stored here was not meant to be found by just anyone.
A sound broke the silence, a faint creak of metal from behind. Naruto spun around, his heart racing, but nothing moved. The vault was silent again, the oppressive weight of the place pressing down on him. It was then that he noticed the faintest of glows coming from the altar. A soft, pulsating light from beneath the chains. The sealing chakra flickered, dimming for just a moment before flaring back to life. The scroll was reacting to him, recognizing his presence, his lineage. The Uzumaki vault was acknowledging its heir. Naruto took a deep breath. He knew now that whatever was inside this vault, whatever knowledge lay hidden in these scrolls, was both a gift and a curse. The secrets of his clan were powerful—too powerful for just anyone to wield. As his fingers traced the edge of the scroll again, he understood that unlocking these secrets would come at a cost. But the Uzumaki clan's legacy was his to bear. And so, seallessly the clones of Naruto appeared and gathered all of the scrolls of knowledge, sealing them away. These were too dangerous to be unguarded and he'd take on that responsibly.
Outside of the Vault - Surface of Uzushiogakure
The echoes of war resonated through every gathering of high-ranking shinobi in Kumogakure and Iwagakure. Konoha's power was surging too rapidly, and whispers of conflict passed between their Kage. While discussions of action floated in the air, nothing had been decided—deemed too premature for such a drastic step. In the meantime, joint missions between the two villages aimed to foster a fragile alliance, but both knew that once this uneasy truce ended, they would be at each other's throats. Yet, there they were, on a mission to Uzushiogakure, the village they had destroyed long ago, seeking the ancient knowledge left behind by the Uzumaki.
A contingent of Kumo and Iwa shinobi combed through the ruins, scrutinizing the surrounding scrolls. Frustration mounted as they attempted to open the seals, only to find most of them blank—another of the accursed Uzumaki's tricks. Their limited fuinjutsu skills were no match for the ancient art, and the air was thick with tension. Suddenly, a reverberation of chakra sliced through the stillness. The lead ninja looked up just in time to see a miniature Yondaime Hokage, a perfect manifestation of chakra, hurtling toward him. Before he could react, the figure slammed into his face, the sickening crunch of bone echoing as he collapsed, lifeless, to the ground.
The blonde flitted through the wreckage, using debris as cover while silently weaving hand seals. His movements were a blur as he approached two unsuspecting targets from behind. With a surge of chakra, he unleashed, "(Fūton: Shinkūgyoku) Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere" two small nearly invisible formations of wind chakra pierced through the skulls of the shinobi before their bodies could even hit the ground. Tunnel vision consumed him as he danced through the chaos until the ground trembled beneath him. In a heartbeat, the earth erupted, and he flipped over the explosion. His hand pressed against the formation, channeling chakra as he called out, "(Doton: Chidōkaku) Earth Release: Mobile Core" a formation jolted upward, catching one of the Kumo-nin mid-attack. A swing went wide, narrowly missing him as the sizzling sound of a detonating explosion echoed through the air. In an instant, the Kumo-nin was obliterated, the formation collapsing in a cloud of debris.
Clasping his hands together, Naruto summoned his bo staff, materializing in a flash. He approached the next shinobi before they could regain their wits. A swift strike to the throat followed by a jab to the clavicle laid the enemy out cold. With a quick pivot, he built momentum, swinging the staff in a wide arc that connected with the forehead of the next ninja, the impact echoing like thunder. Pain shot through Naruto as he was blasted backward out of the dust cloud. Gritting his teeth, he called upon the power within, "(Fūton: Daitoppa) The Wind Release: Great Breakthrough" a moment later the debris was blown away, revealing four remaining shinobi, their eyes wide with shock. Using his staff as leverage, he staggered to his feet, dropping into a defensive stance. In that moment, Kakashi materialized behind the remaining enemies, his ANBU mask and silver hair gleaming. With a fluid motion, he unleashed Raikiri, slicing through the ninja with lethal precision—like a hot knife through butter. The air crackled with energy as the Demonic Chakra of the Kyuubi surged within Naruto, mending his wounds as Kakashi and the rest of the platoon rushed in, ready to finish the fight.
Naruto resealed his staff as he began, "Upon departing from Konoha, everything proceeded according to plan until a large thunderstorm, likely generated by chakra, formed overhead. When it unleashed its power, the situation rapidly deteriorated. I separated from my team to avoid sustaining damage, which led me to the outskirts of Hi no Kuni. While there, I was struck in the head, and upon regaining consciousness, I found myself here. I've spent the past 29 hours in this location before encountering a contingent that appeared to be from Kumogakure and Iwagakure. I swiftly dispatched three of them and created a distraction to take out another two. However, I was discovered and subsequently forced to confront the remaining enemies until your arrival."
Kakashi nodded before pulling who he considered his younger brother into a young "It's good that you're ok, another platoon is following the trail of your team but I'm taking you back to Konoha."
The Storm of Shadows Part One End
Author's Notes:
Well I thought this arc would be longer but it seems like it'll just be another chapter or two depending on my drive.
