Chapter Eighteen: Shadows of Sand and Blood part II
Konohagakure no Sato - ANBU Headquarters - Locker Room
The members of Epsilon squad were clad in their modified mission gear, signaling the weight and seriousness of the operation ahead. As his teammates secured their equipment, Naruto looked up at his masked commanding officer, Dragon. "Upon arrival in Sunagakure, you'll be met by an ANBU unit known as the Dusk Reapers," Dragon briefed. "This will be a joint operation. Although such collaborations are rare, you'll be in charge. Once on the ground, switch into standard Suna ANBU attire and use the joint sign language. Any questions?" Naruto considered the assignment. "With the Akatsuki involved, what kind of backup can we expect?" "Unknown. Worst case scenario, none. Best case, a chunin squad." Naruto took in the details and turned to face his team, each of them already dressed in their undersuit gear, prepared to change upon reaching Suna. As he adjusted his fox mask, he brushed a hand through his golden locs, now concealed, and tied them into a tight man bun. With his mask secure, he addressed his squad. "Alright, head to the mission bay. Our hawk summons are prepped and waiting." With silent nods, the team left, leaving only Naruto and Dragon behind. They shared a lingering look, masked but filled with understanding. "I expect you back alive, even if it means aborting the mission," Dragon said, his tone uncharacteristically sincere. "You don't mean that," Naruto replied with a slight smirk behind his mask. "Yes, I do." And with that, Dragon disappeared in a swirl of leaves. Deploying ANBU summons for emergency transport was rarely discussed, even among ANBU ranks. The six members of Kitsune Team mounted two large hawk summons, chakra-bound to perch securely for long-distance flight. Naruto sat at the front, giving a nod to the ANBU on standby. A quick sequence of hand seals opened the departure gate, hidden by a complex fūinjutsu and genjutsu, and the hawks took flight, soaring over the skies of the Land of Fire.
Konohagakure no Sato - Uchiha Clan Compound
Fugaku Uchiha sat quietly in his study, his expression composed but thoughtful as he regarded his son, Sasuke, sitting across from him. Despite his many responsibilities—as the Uchiha patriarch, head of the Department of Investigation, and a member of the Council—the upcoming war weighed heavily on his mind, making this moment with Sasuke feel all the more significant. It had been five years since they'd last seen each other, and the changes in Sasuke were undeniable; he was no longer a boy but a man, hardened by his experiences. "It is good to see you back and in good health, son," Fugaku began, his voice calm and measured. Sasuke bowed his head respectfully. "Thank you, Father." After a pause, Fugaku continued, his words carrying an unusual weight. "Itachi will soon be the most powerful man in Konoha within the next two years. With this in consideration, he won't be able to lead both the village and our clan due to a clear conflict of interest. My own duties are set to increase as we prepare for the possibility of a Fourth Great Ninja War." Fugaku's gaze was steady, though his words seemed to hang heavily in the room. He knew Sasuke hadn't considered this. Sasuke's eyes widened slightly. He'd always assumed Itachi would lead both the village and the Uchiha, not realizing that such dual leadership was impossible. It made sense now, but it was still unexpected. "With this in mind," Fugaku said, his tone firm but not unkind, "your responsibilities within the clan will increase. You will be named Clan Head in the near future." The pronouncement landed like a stone in Sasuke's chest. He had not expected this at all.
Konohagakure no Sato - Hokage Tower - Hokage Office
Things were escalating quickly, and the threat posed by Akatsuki was becoming more pressing by the day. A significant military asset was in jeopardy, and before the Hokage, a completed letter lay alongside a Messenger Toad. It was time to bring his son home. Minato carefully rolled up the scroll and handed it to the toad, which leaped away with a purposeful flick of its legs. Just then, Shikaku Nara entered the room, taking a seat across from the exhausted Hokage. He could see the toll that recent preparations and unorthodox deployments were taking on Minato; the weariness etched into his features spoke volumes. "When was the last time you got a full night of sleep?" Shikaku asked, concern lacing his voice. Minato's only response was silence, his eyes closing momentarily as he rubbed them in an attempt to stave off fatigue. With a resigned sigh, Shikaku placed his hand on the desk, leaning forward slightly. "Go home and leave this all to me. I'll gather the best people I can for whatever is coming." Minato nodded, a look of gratitude crossing his face before he vanished in a flash of yellow lightning, leaving Shikaku to his thoughts. "Hound," Shikaku called, summoning an ANBU member who materialized silently in front of him. "Summon Sasuke Uchiha, Shikamaru Nara, and Shino Aburame." The ANBU member nodded, disappearing in a swirl of leaves to carry out the command, while Shikaku leaned back in the Hokage's chair, the weight of the village's safety resting heavily on his shoulders once again "I really hate this chair."
With Epsilon - Kaze no Kuni - Desert Dunes
Cloaks billowed around them, shielding their identities as desert winds howled and sandstorms whipped across the landscape. Naruto walked a few steps ahead, his keen eyesight cutting through the swirling sands as he led the team forward. Ayame's voice broke the silence, muffled through her rebreather mask. "Looks like we have a real package assignment this time." She darted up beside Sakura, a playful bounce in her step as she clasped her hands behind her back. "Guess those unused medical skills of yours are about to see some action." Sakura's cheeks flushed under her mask, her body language betraying her embarrassment. Ayame giggled and exchanged a glance with Hinata, who gave a reassuring nod. Hinata signed with quick, graceful movements, "Only teasing. We all know you're one of the best." Sakura's blush only deepened as Ayame and Hinata each took a hand, pulling the flustered medic forward with a playful skip. Meanwhile, Sai's calm, monotone voice cut in from behind them, catching the other men's attention. "I'll never quite understand why she always gets so flustered with them." Kazuki, their tall, quiet teammate, shrugged. "You'd think someone so strong would have a stronger will too. Guess even the toughest have their soft spots." As the women rejoined the squad, Naruto raised his hand, signing a silent message: Rendezvous point ahead. Six confirmed targets. Remain vigilant. The squad fell into a tense silence as they approached. Ahead, a small tent sat tucked into the dunes, a single camel tied to a post outside. Standing watch was a young man with sandy blonde hair, fair skin, and striking violet eyes. Naruto motioned his team to halt while he stepped forward alone, his face hidden by his mask and hood. The young man's gaze drifted over Naruto, assessing him with the cautious eyes of a trained shinobi. "What do you want?" he asked, his face impassive, though subtle shifts in his posture hinted at readiness for a fight. Naruto responded calmly, reciting the agreed-upon passphrase. "Only shadows thrive under the sun." The man nodded, responding, "But the dunes remember our steps." With that, Naruto signaled for his team to approach, and they moved together toward the tent, where several other shinobi clad in Suna ANBU gear awaited them. One of the shinobi, appearing to be the leader, gestured for them to gather around. "You made it here fast. Good. Stay close; the dunes aren't fully secure." Forming a tight circle around the young man, the group watched as he weaved a series of hand seals, and the ground beneath them gave way, lowering into a concealed entrance. As the platform stopped in a dimly lit, spacious cavern, the shinobi gestured down a hallway. "This outpost was abandoned after the Third War," he explained, his voice low and steady. "Your uniforms are down that way. Change quickly—I'll brief you on everything we know."
In muted sand-toned armor, the Suna ANBU team and Naruto moved with purpose. Their uniforms were perfectly suited for the desert, designed for the dual purpose of protection and adaptability in the harsh environment. The lightweight, durable fabric provided ventilation without compromising their stealth, and sand-proofed mesh panels ensured they'd stay cool while avoiding detection. Key areas were covered with chakra-infused armor plates that provided just enough protection without adding bulk. Matte-finished to prevent reflection, the plates also featured small vents to keep sand from gathering, maintaining their mobility. Their faces were shrouded with detachable hoods and wraps, adding a layer of anonymity while shielding them from the elements. In the corridor, five Suna ANBU stood assembled, their leader Phantom running through the plan. He indicated the positions of Hawk, Serpent, Scorpion, and Glassblade, the latter currently serving as lookout. They exchanged subtle nods of understanding as Naruto turned his attention to the briefing table, where Phantom activated a chakra-infused fuinjutsu with a genjutsu overlay to display a detailed map of Kaze no Kuni. "Here's what we know," Phantom began, his voice steady. "Hanzo and an orange-cloaked figure clashed with Sahara Kazamori and Fuka Hozan just a few miles outside Suna. The battle continued to escalate, drawing them away from the village. Kazekage-sama moved in to assist, and that's when Kabuto Yakushi—a high-ranking rogue-nin—seized the opportunity to take Gaara. Tracking squads confirmed Kabuto's escape route leading toward the Land of Rivers. Suna has deployed reinforcements to the border to block any further pursuit from Akatsuki and to provide immediate medical support if needed." Naruto's gaze sharpened as he took in the information. They had a solid advantage in the terrain, but the mission's urgency was clear. "In Kaze no Kuni, speed is our top priority. Once we cross into the Land of Rivers, though, we'll need to move silently—unknown threats could be waiting for us." He scanned the team, ensuring each member understood the shift in tactics. "If we encounter Akatsuki members, I want Willow, Falcon, Cat, and the Suna team to engage them, creating a diversion. I'll take Dog and Iron to retrieve Gaara directly. Expect the possibility of Hanzo's elites supporting him, so stay alert. Any questions?" The team gave silent nods, a sign of their readiness. The mission had a heavy weight, knowing that Gaara's life—and perhaps the village's safety—was on the line. "Let's move out," Naruto commanded, his voice steely. The
Sunagakure no Sato - Kazekage Tower - Kazekage Office
In the dimly lit Kazekage Tower, Rasa was pouring over Konoha's response, his exhaustion barely concealed. He understood why Nightfall couldn't be activated; the upcoming war had spread Suna's elite squads thin, requiring their top operatives to collaborate with other nations. This left Rasa to rely on the Desert Reapers, led by the capable Sage of Shadows. As he mulled over the situation, the door creaked open, and his remaining children, Temari and Kankuro, entered, their expressions tense. Temari's voice cut through the silence, demanding, "Why weren't we deployed to go find Gaara?" Rasa kept his focus on the papers in front of him, replying with a calm but firm tone, "Because this is a delicate situation. The more subtle our actions, the less likely someone will exploit the chaos." Temari scoffed, her anger barely restrained. "What? Your son, our brother, has been kidnapped, and you're worried about appearances?" Rasa slammed the papers down, fixing her with a sharp gaze. "Temari, this is why you'd make a terrible Kage," he retorted, his voice laced with authority. "You're only seeing this from one angle, ignoring the larger threat on all our shoulders. Kaze no Kuni's best interest was my priority in selecting the team. The best are already deployed. Don't question my decisions again." Temari was momentarily stunned but managed to steady her voice. "I can't just sit here while Gaara is out there." Rasa sighed, half-expecting her response. "I knew you'd say that. I want you, Kankuro, and Chiyo to head to the border with a platoon of our finest. Wait for the return of the ANBU I sent out." He softened slightly, understanding the siblings' worry but resolute in his decision. They nodded, accepting his orders, though tension still lingered as they turned to leave.
Konohagakure no Sato - Hokage Tower - Hokage Office
Meanwhile, back in the Hokage Tower of Konohagakure, Shikaku Nara was briefing Sasuke, Shikamaru, and Shino. The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic tapping of Shikaku's fingers on the desk as he studied the young shinobi before him. "Your evaluations are on hold," he began, his gaze sharp and unwavering. "We have a pressing situation. Gaara, the son of the Kazekage, was taken by the Akatsuki because of his jinchūriki status. Normally, an operation like this would stay in the shadows, but word is spreading quickly." Shikaku's voice lowered, his tone even more serious. "I need you to act as backup, but this isn't a direct combat mission. You'll be supporting the Suna ANBU's commanding officer, Kitsune, with whatever they need. This is off the books, and your involvement must remain unknown. I'm telling you this because our Sannin are otherwise engaged, and our top agents are all currently off the radar. Right now, ANBU are our assets—and as yet untested, you three have the opportunity to prove yourselves useful." Sasuke clenched his fists, a flicker of frustration passing through him, though Shikaku noticed and let it slide. "Remember, orders are absolute, and any defiance will be handled accordingly. You have thirty minutes to prepare and leave for Sunagakure. Once there, follow all directives from the Kazekage. Understood?" They all nodded, Shikaku's words sinking in. "Dismissed."
The Next Day - Kawa no Kuni (River Country)
They had journeyed across Kaze no Kuni, resting in shifts. The true mission would begin as soon as they crossed the border. Once across, stealth would be paramount, calling them back to their roots as ANBU—elite agents of intelligence and genuine shinobi. Moving swiftly across the treetops, they made good time, each member's instincts honed and ready. Phantom reached into his kunai pouch, hurling a blade toward an unseen presence. Movement ceased as he stared down at the plant-like creature emerging in the shadows. None of them recognized it, but the black cloak emblazoned with red clouds told them all they needed to know. Naruto gave a quick nod of approval, and Phantom erased all hesitation, seemingly vanishing into thin air. Using shunshin in battle was a rare skill, but when executed with precision, it could end a fight in a single strike, setting Phantom's senses into a focused tunnel vision. Zetsu's gaze swept over the squad, and as a flash of killing intent flared, it sank into the ground using its Mayfly Jutsu just as Phantom appeared, blade in hand, only to strike an empty shadow. Expanding his senses, Phantom was already too late; the quarry had evaded. In a flash, the team regrouped around him. "Whatever that thing was, it's gone," Phantom muttered, scanning the area.
Naruto nodded, his face grim. "We have to assume our cover is blown." His eyes suddenly narrowed, and in a blur, he caught a projectile mid-air. "Scatter!" he commanded as a wave of kunai shredded the branches into fragments of debris. The squad leaped apart, landing on the forest floor. Standing before them, cloaked figures with blank expressions and ventilation masks awaited in silent ranks. Recognizing the unmistakable Amegakure insignia, Naruto signed to the team from behind his back: "Amegakure platoon. Split up. Nothing flashy." In an instant, he vanished with shunshin, his chokutō gleaming as Phantom layered a subtle genjutsu over Naruto's targets. However, the illusion was dispelled almost immediately, forcing him to reposition. His blade sliced through the air, each stroke targeting vital points with surgical precision.
The Dusk Reapers moved into action. Chakra moulded swiftly as Serpent cast his own genjutsu, pausing his prey in their tracks. Scorpion moved in sync, pulling out specialized senbon and hitting each opponent with perfect accuracy, striking their jugulars. A group of Amegakure shinobi regained awareness, only for blood to spill from their eyes and mouths as the poison took effect. Sakura and Hinata launched into the fray, shattering bones with every punch. Each strike from Hinata's tanto severed tendons and ligaments with brutal efficiency, crippling the foes before they could react. Assessing the hopeless situation, two Amegakure shinobi broke from the ranks, darting deeper into River Country. "Doton: Chōten Ishi Yari! (Earth Release: Apex Stone Spear)" erupted as one of the Amegakure shinobi sprinted through the trees. A massive spear of earth surged from the ground, impaling him mid-stride. His partner dodged, shunshining ahead, narrowly avoiding small bursts of flame that erupted around him. Ayame awaited him in the clearing, her eyes flashing with the control of her genjutsu. As he staggered forward, already caught in her illusion, she moved in with a precise slash of her kunai. His body crumpled as his eyes glazed over in death. The battle was over. The conjoined squad took a moment to catch their breath, regrouping in the wake of the brief but intense conflict. Each member shared a silent look—no words needed to pass between them; they all understood that from this point forward, things would only escalate. The mission was now a race against time, every second bringing them closer to whatever unknown dangers lay ahead. With renewed focus, they pressed forward, their movements synchronizing instinctively as they vanished into the dense forest shadows, leaving no trace behind.
Tsuchi no Kuni (Land of Earth) - Iwagakure no Sato - Tsuchikage Tower - Office
For the past five years, every effort, every sacrifice, and every strategic maneuver had been building toward this moment. The Tsuchikage's forces were assembled, drilled to lethal precision, ready for the spark that would ignite his plans. And today, the perfect opportunity had come knocking. "Repeat that again?" he demanded, his voice a controlled monotone that barely masked his excitement. "Hanzo the Salamander, along with an unknown Akatsuki member, engaged the Suna guardians. Meanwhile, two others seized the Kazekage's son and are holding him somewhere in Kawa no Kuni (River Country)." The Tsuchikage's face remained impassive for a moment before breaking into a wide, triumphant grin. He turned to his Jonin Commander, Taro Taniguchi—a man with a lean yet formidable build, long black hair, and piercing gray eyes that conveyed unwavering resolve. Taro's robes, shaded in brown and gray, reflected the rugged terrains of Iwagakure and his iron loyalty to his village. "Taro," the Tsuchikage instructed, his voice like granite, "activate the task force. Consider this a field test. I want you leading them in." Taro's gaze didn't falter as he nodded, moving towards the exit. He stopped, his hand on the door handle. "What about her?" "She's to prove herself," the Tsuchikage replied, his tone dismissive yet deliberate. With a final nod, Taro was gone, and the Tsuchikage rose, looking out over his village. This was it. Iwagakure's ascent was about to begin.
Kawa no Kuni - Unknown Location - Sealing Cave
The cave was thick with a menacing swirl of chakra, dark and cloying, snaking its way across the chamber and feeding into a complex fuinjutsu array glowing ominously on the ground. Akatsuki members, appearing in spectral form, poured their chakra into the seal, their holograms flickering in the dim crimson glow. Zetsu's black-and-white form emerged from the stone floor, drawing the room's attention. "A small platoon of Suna ANBU is rapidly approaching." Hanzo's eyes narrowed. "I have a squad stationed nearby. They'll handle it—" "No offense, Hanzo-sama, but they were wiped out in minutes," Zetsu interrupted, his usual calm tinged with urgency. Pein's Rinnegan eyes flickered, barely concealing his displeasure. Suddenly, an intense surge of chakra erupted from Gaara, his once restrained body now wreathed in Shukaku's furious, sand-colored cloak. Bloodshot eyes snapped open, and a savage roar reverberated through the chamber, shaking loose debris from the ceiling. "Focus," Konan's calm voice cut through the chaos, steady and unshaken, grounding them all. The Akatsuki resumed their work, channeling their chakra to reinforce the restraining seal. Pein raised a single finger, his immense power crashing down on Gaara, pinning him against the stone with oppressive force. Gaara thrashed, clawing at the air in a wild frenzy as Shukaku's chakra battled against Pein's control. After several tense minutes, the seal began to stabilize, and silence once more filled the chamber. But their timeline was blown; the unexpected flare of Shukaku's power had cost them precious hours. Pein's narrowed gaze swept across the room, settling on two members. "Kisame, Deidara—prepare clones. Pay our visitors a warm welcome." The two Akatsuki members shared a predatory grin, and with a nod, they disappeared from the chamber, leaving Pein and the others to continue their work.
With Epsilon and Desert Reapers
They were close, the explosion of demonic chakra was all they needed in order to know that. Barreling through the trees, Naruto's heart began racing. S-Rank ninja, he'd only fought Dragon once and he lost that by a landslide all of those years ago and he wasn't even taking it seriously. What were these guys like, his palm moved before he processed anything. The group came to a pause as he sensed out for something, he didn't know what it was but it was there. Heavy and oppressive, Naruto's eyes shot open Kisame's blade gleaming as he flipped out of the way. Hinata looked up as the sound of hissing echoed, a lump of clay fell in the center of the canopy as an explosion rocked the tree top. She maneuvered herself a distance away landing on her feet as she did so, Kisame and Deidara stood in front of them as the smoke cleared. "Twelve little Sunagakure ANBU was causing all of this trouble? Don't make me laugh" Naruto shifted off towards the side as he raised his hand signing "Falcon and I will move forward, handle them to your best ability. Cat, give us an opening." Sakura nodded, moulding chakra as she did so "Chaaa!" her fist impacted with the ground causing fissures and cucks of earth to explode. It continued to grow in every direction knocking trees over destroying them, Kisame was surprised and it showed on his face as he backpedaled quickly pursued by just two of them. Maybe this will be fun after all. Naruto and Hinata utilizing the steps of the silent killing snuck off, he had a feeling something was off about those two but trusted in his comrades. "Falcon, things are about to get serious." Stay on high alert."
Border between Kaze no Kuni (Wind Country) and Kawa no Kuni (River Country) - Sunagakure Border outpost
Following the attack on Sunagakure no Sato, border security had tightened in every direction, especially along the northern fronts near Iwagakure and Kumogakure. But this eastern border now served a unique purpose. Maki, the border commander for this sector, sighed, mentally promising herself a vacation once this ordeal was over. Sunagakure had recently seen an influx of shinobi moving to reinforce the Eastern front, preparing for an ANBU-led operation to rescue the Kazekage's youngest son. Though the mission was officially classified, whispers hinted at Konoha's involvement. Twelve operatives had been assigned to retrieve the Kazekage's son from a group of S-rank nuke-nin, but that wasn't all. In a quiet yet telling show of force, a cell of elite jonin from Konoha had also been dispatched off the official records. Among them were familiar faces: the Midnight Mind, Shikamaru Nara, who Maki recognized from previous joint operations; the Whispering Plague, Shino Aburame; and an enigmatic Uchiha who hadn't been seen since the Chunin Exams. Sighing, Maki turned away, heading back inside the outpost to her office. She could use a nap. Meanwhile, Temari stepped outside as Maki passed her, spotting the Konoha trio standing by the railing, overlooking the wide expanse of Kawa no Kuni (River Country) below. She had heard rumors that they'd arrived, but seeing them in person confirmed it. "So, it's true," Temari said, crossing her arms as she approached. They turned to face her, and Shino greeted her with his usual calm composure. "It has been some time, Temari-san," he said. A small smile played on her lips. "What, since you kicked my ass?" Shino adjusted his glasses, and Shikamaru sighed, giving her a faint nod. "I was hoping to advance further in that match, to be honest." "No need to explain yourself. I learned a lot from that fight. I was arrogant, and I needed that wake-up call. So… thank you," Temari replied, her tone sincere. Shikamaru, ever the strategist, decided to move the conversation to more pressing matters. "Any updates on the squad you sent?" Temari's expression sobered, her smile fading. "No contact so far, but we're certain that chakra from earlier was Gaara's. All lines of communication are closed—they're working under the assumption that any messages would be intercepted, and any delay could compromise their mission." Sasuke's hands gripped the railing, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "And you're alright just sitting around? Don't you want to be out there?" he asked, his voice holding a sharp edge. Shikamaru shot him a warning look. "Watch it, Sasuke. Don't do anything reckless." Temari gave a small smirk, undeterred by Sasuke's question. "Of course I'd rather be out there, but I trust in my father, and I know he's put his best on the front lines. Sometimes, support on the sidelines is just as essential," she replied, though her gaze grew more distant, betraying a hint of worry. Her thoughts shifted as she looked around, searching. "Speaking of our best… where is Naruto-kun?" Shikamaru raised an eyebrow at the familiarity in her tone but refrained from commenting. "Last we heard, he was still in the Fire Capital. Maybe he's gotten too comfortable up there," he said, smirking. Temari chuckled lightly, though a glint of curiosity remained in her eyes. "Naruto? Comfortable? That'll be the day," she muttered. Sasuke tuned them out, ever since he'd gotten back he hadn't got to prove himself and the perfect opportunity stared at him and all he was told to be was watch the border… No, that wouldn't do for the future Uchiha Clan Head.
Chapter Eighteen END
