Chapter Twenty: Shadows of Sand and Blood part IIII
Three Days Later - Konohagakure no Sato - Council Chamber
Operation: SHADOWFALL was deemed a success. Though technically a "black book" assignment, due to the operation's outcome, the mission was cataloged in the ANBU Headquarters of both respective villages and added to the training materials on applied tactics against superior opponents. However, some things could not remain hidden. The clash of powerful chakras in the lands of Kawa no Kuni (River Country) was one such event. Not many knew the details, but the presence of numerous Iwagakure shinobi bodies was a clear indicator of the scale and severity of the skirmish. Unclaimed by any village, the faint traces of demonic chakra, as well as an unfamiliar type of energy, left many wondering who or what had been involved.
In the council chamber, standing at attention, were the members of both villages' Special Black Ops, giving a full recounting of the events of their S-Rank mission. All relevant parties were in attendance, including select Clan Heads such as the Uchiha and Hyuga, the Sannin, and both ANBU Commanders standing by the sides of their respective Kage. As Kitsune finished detailing the mission, he concluded with a note on a critical moment: "Kuro Taniguchi showed a moment of weakness, and as I prepared to fully eliminate him, Special Jonin Uchiha Sasuke, atop a large toad summon, destroyed my barrier. This lapse in my attention allowed Kuro to escape. Taking my actions seriously, he swiftly disabled me before retreating." A silence filled the room, with each person reflecting differently on the implications of Kitsune's account. Fugaku shifted in his chair, turning to the seated Kage. "I'd like to apologize on behalf of my son, Sasuke. His actions are unforgivable, and I am sorry, ANBU-san, that he put your life at risk." Minato waved the apology off, and Naruto gave a subtle nod from behind his mask, but Rasa's expression remained displeased.
"I appreciate the apology, Fugaku, but this was not your mistake. Bring the boy in." Dragon, the ANBU Commander, turned and nodded to a guard, who opened the door. Sasuke Uchiha entered slowly, scanning the expressions around the table. His sensei avoided his gaze, while his father looked utterly disappointed. Sasuke's footsteps felt weighted, as though each one brought him closer to judgment. He positioned himself next to the two ANBU squad leaders, standing at attention. Rasa interlocked his fingers, breathing calmly and slowly. In this moment, he chose not to speak as a Kage, but as a father. "What caused you to disobey a direct order, Uchiha Sasuke? Ignorance? Selfishness?" The room remained silent as Sasuke grappled with his emotions, thoughts swirling. Finally, he began, "I—" "I don't want a watered-down version. I want the honest truth."
Clenching his hands behind his back, Sasuke raised his head. "I wanted to prove myself. I wanted to show that I was useful, not just someone held in reserve. I wanted to prove that if Konoha needed something, I could be the first person the Hokage could call upon." Jiraiya's steely gaze softened slightly as he looked toward the two Kage. Rasa and Minato exchanged a glance, a silent exchange of understanding. Minato then turned to Shikaku, giving him a subtle nod. For those not accustomed to council meetings, the moment felt strange, but they waited in silence all the same. Shikaku spoke in his usual, unhurried tone. "Special Jonin Uchiha Sasuke, for disobeying direct orders and interrupting an ongoing S-Rank mission, you are hereby demoted to Chunin, remanded to a six-month period of D-Rank missions following the conclusion of the impending war, and suspended from field missions. Your growth would have come in due time, but your actions have affected our preparations. Your vest, please." Feeling as though he'd been stabbed, Sasuke unzipped his modified Jonin flak jacket. Jiraiya reached out, taking it from him with a steady hand. "Thank you for your efforts in retrieving my son. I would like to thank you all personally, and the payment for an S-Rank mission will be deposited into your accounts," Rasa concluded, acknowledging the ANBU team's contributions. "Kitsune, in my office, please."
Hokage Office
The tenison in the room was palpable, Kitsune stood at attention in front of the Hokage; Also in the room was Dragon, Orochimaru, and the Sandaime Hokage and they all knew why. As Minato began opening his mouth Kitsune reached up slowly removing his mask as his hair shifted from midnight black his golden locs, his face was measured as he held his mask behind his back. "It's nice to see you again, father." It was true, his son had been right under his nose the entire time running his most dangerous operations; Minato's face showing so many different emotions that he didn't know where to begin, but Naruto had been preparing for this day for the last five years. "I'd like to start with an apology for deceiving you father, my intentions were to assist Konoha with where I knew I'd operate at my full capabilities." Minato chuckled as he leaned back into his chair as he looked around the impassive expressions on everyone's face, they all knew; Why? Why didn't his own son trust? "Why didn't you tell me?" "Because you wouldn't have agreed, I could tell during my promotion you were against it but I worked hard to achieve my goal." "And is it joining ANBU?" "Protecting Konoha and the things I cherish most where the real battles are being held, wars ending before they can even begin." Minato had a small smile on his face, "Ok, I'll respect your decision only under the condition Naruto Uzumaki returns from the five capital after so long." Naruto smiled as Minato gave him one, "There is one thing I left out of my report, Hokage-sama." That was mission mode, all eyes were on him as Minato gave him a nod to continue "During my battle I used Sage Mode during actual combat." Orochimaru's eyes shot up. "Did you use that?" Naruto shook his head in the negative as he continued, "I marked all three high profile targets with the harshin formula." That was a game changer, they could take them all out before the war could even begin, with them only having Han as their last jinjuriki this could remove a major nuclear deterrent. "Orochimaru, I want a member of Echo Squad on each of them." The Snake Sannin nodded. "Welcome back to Konohagakure no Sato ANBU Captain Naruto Namikaze Uzumaki."
Uchiha Clan Compound
Disappointment. Fugaku had thought he'd never feel it again. "What were you thinking? You wanted to prove yourself? How childish." Sasuke's gaze snapped up. "You! I wanted to prove myself to you! It's always been about Itachi. I thought, after all this time, I could finally show you that I'm not any different from him." Fugaku stood, walking toward the sliding door leading out to the training grounds. "Very well. I'll allow you the opportunity to prove yourself worthy of the title of clan heir." Sliding the door open, the Uchiha Patriarch stepped outside, his yukata billowing slightly. Sasuke followed, dropping into a stance with his hand hovering over his tanto, staring intently at his father, who stood there without any stance at all. "Come, boy." It wasn't a fight—it didn't last even a minute. Sasuke lay on the ground, staring up at the sky as Fugaku loomed over him, his Sharingan fading back to his normal eyes. Without a word, Fugaku turned and walked away, leaving Sasuke on the ground to whisper, "Why?"
The Next Day - Namikaze Compound
With Gaara's return, both Kage decided it was best to push the alliance exchange forward, despite the uncertainty surrounding the recent mission's details. For the Sand siblings, this was a rare moment of rest. Kankuro enjoyed a lazy reprieve from their typical mission tempo, while Gaara explored the Namikaze Compound's amenities. For a family of two, they certainly had many luxuries: a spa area, a swimming pool, even an outdoor golf course. Temari had her questions about the excess, but she couldn't deny she enjoyed it. The compound was set to be made partially public, a decision Minato had implemented recently. A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Seated at the table awaiting the chef's freshly prepared sushi, Temari sighed, noting Kankuro wouldn't be getting up anytime soon, and Gaara was outside playing golf—a sight that still baffled her. Standing, she approached the door. As she grabbed the handle, a seal array briefly glowed, unlocking the door. She found herself staring at someone's chest and looked up to see a familiar face—blonde hair pulled back into a man bun, an orange and black tracksuit, and the sash of the Twelve Ninja Guardians across his chest.
"N-Naruto?" The mention of Naruto's name prompted Kankuro to look up, curious. Naruto gave a small smile, scratching the back of his head. "Sorry, my father must've upgraded the security seals without telling me." His eyes took in Temari's form, noting her short blonde hair in four pigtails and her attire—a cropped sweater and baggy pants. After a beat, Naruto commented, "You've sure gotten pretty, Temari-kun. Maybe you'll let me take you out sometime." It wasn't really a question. He stepped into the renovated compound, looking around. "Seems like a lot's changed here." Temari could only stare as he walked past her. "Sis… the door," Kankuro called, snapping her out of her trance. She closed the door and hurried after Naruto, finding him setting his bag down in his old room. She planted herself in the doorway, arms crossed. "After five years, that's all you have to say!?" Naruto was unsealing his belongings, placing a blade on a stand on the wall, before he finally turned to her. "Well, Temari, how've you been?" "Confused! You're… flirting with me?" Her voice held disbelief. "No, I was just making an observation," he replied, dismissive. "Anyway, we should get something to eat. Are you busy?" The statement sounded oddly like a command, throwing her off-balance. "No!" she blurted out, only for her stomach to growl at the same time. She flushed, embarrassed. "I mean… I did ask the chef to make some sushi, so…" Naruto tilted his head with a small grin. "The sushi your brother is eating right now?"
Ichiraku Ramen
Temari found herself caught off guard by the subtle warmth radiating from Naruto's usually calm and collected demeanor. He'd always been a bit of a mystery, but tonight, he seemed more open, almost... daring. She looked up from her chopsticks, curiosity sparkling in her eyes. "So, how was your time in the capital?" Naruto finished his bowl of ramen and leaned back with a slight smirk. "Intense. If nothing else, I learned that politics aren't my thing. The missions were one thing, but the way people scramble for power? It surprised me." He shook his head, as if clearing away a bitter memory. Temari nodded, relating to that world of ruthless ambition. "I can see that. But don't tell me you let them get to you. I thought the legendary Uzumaki Naruto was unshakeable." He scoffed, giving her a playful look. "Oh, come on. I think I'd put my record up against yours any day." Her brows rose, eyes dancing with challenge. "Oh really? Official jonin here—top track record, better than yours." Naruto leaned forward, crossing his arms on the table. "You wish." His voice was soft but teasing, that casual smile she hadn't seen in so long on his lips. When Temari met his gaze, though, her heart caught a little. His eyes had changed over the years. She couldn't tell if it was the experience, the hardship, or just the passage of time. It was unsettling... but intriguing. "Well," she said, breaking eye contact to collect herself, "it's good to see you finally confident enough to admit it." "Oh, I've got confidence to spare," he replied with a smirk, the old fire she remembered flashing in his eyes. Temari shook her head, but a smile softened her features. It was like seeing an old friend and a stranger all at once. "So," she asked, "now that you're back, what are your plans?" Naruto finished his second bowl, then looked her square in the eyes, his expression growing serious. "Well, if you must know, I'm committed to ANBU Black Ops now. I've been for a while. But enough about that. Let's go do something." Before she could reply, he reached out, gently taking her hand. Her heart raced slightly as he pulled her up with a grin. It was rare for her to feel flustered, but his unexpected directness left her speechless.
They wandered through the village streets, Naruto pointing out all the new buildings and sharing stories from his missions in a way that felt refreshingly genuine. Temari listened, drawn in by the life behind his words, the occasional self-deprecating joke, the moments of introspection that slipped through. At one point, they passed an ice cream stand, and Naruto, always the lover of simple pleasures, insisted they each get a cone. She chuckled at his childlike excitement as he took a huge bite of his own cone, wincing when he got a brain freeze. "Still a kid at heart," she teased, licking her own cone thoughtfully. "Not that I'd have it any other way." He gave her a half-grin, rubbing his temple. "It keeps me grounded." For a while, they walked in companionable silence, each lost in their thoughts. As the sun dipped low, Naruto guided her up a hill with a view overlooking the village. They sat down side by side, watching the sky fade to hues of pink and orange. "It's... beautiful," Temari murmured. She glanced at Naruto, catching the quiet wonder in his gaze as he looked at the horizon, his expression soft, almost vulnerable. "Yeah, it is," he replied, but his eyes shifted to her as he spoke, the unspoken sentiment lingering between them. Temari felt her face grow warm, so she quickly looked away. "So... are you always this confident now?" she asked, trying to hide her fluster. He chuckled. "Not always. But sometimes you have to be, you know?" A weight settled over them, the easy conversation slowing as a sense of connection solidified. Temari wondered if he could hear her heartbeat racing, if he could see how he was slowly chipping away at the walls she kept up around her.
When they descended from the hill, the village had transformed into a constellation of warm lights, alive with nighttime energy. Naruto took her to some of his favorite spots, introducing her to a few friends along the way, and as they moved through the crowd, Temari noticed he kept close, his hand occasionally brushing against hers in a way that left her feeling exhilarated. Hours passed without her realizing it, and eventually, they wandered into a quieter part of the village. They stopped by a small, empty training ground, where Naruto turned to her with a mischievous grin. "Remember all those times we sparred?" he asked. Temari smirked. "Think you're up for a rematch?" They circled each other, playful, their eyes locked in silent challenge. Naruto moved first, sweeping in with a feint she easily dodged, countering with a kick that he blocked. For the first time in years, Temari let her guard down, laughing as they exchanged blows, her heart light and free. When they finally stopped, both slightly breathless, Naruto took a step back, studying her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. "You've changed," he murmured. Temari tilted her head, her smile softening. "So have you, Naruto." They lingered in silence, words unnecessary as a quiet understanding settled between them. She knew she'd miss this feeling, this version of him that was still Naruto but older, wiser.
Returning to the Namikaze Compound
As they approached the compound, Gaara stood waiting, arms folded and expression unreadable. Temari hid a smile at the protective look in her brother's eyes, watching as Naruto stopped, acknowledging Gaara with equal respect. "Naruto-san," Gaara said with a slight nod. "I trust you took care of my sister." Naruto's eyes sparkled with a knowing look. "Of course. I hear it's easy to lose one's way in the Sand's deserts." Gaara held his gaze, and for a tense moment, Temari watched in amusement as her brother tried to out-stare the village hero. But the tension broke as Gaara's lips quirked into a rare smile, the two embracing like old friends. "It's good to see you again, Naruto," Gaara murmured. Naruto returned the embrace, the friendship they'd forged evident in the tightness of his grip. "You too, Gaara." As Gaara and Kankuro headed off, Naruto glanced back at Temari, offering a small smile as he quietly wished her goodnight. Temari watched him go, her heart unexpectedly heavy. She'd been on countless missions, faced life-threatening enemies, and yet this goodbye felt more intense than she'd anticipated.
Later that Night – Namikaze Compound Rooftop
Naruto sat on the roof, alone under the starlit sky. He was so lost in thought he didn't notice Boar, one of the few ANBU operatives who knew his identity, land silently beside him. "Report," Naruto said without turning. "Dragon-sama requests your return after the Sand Siblings leave," Boar murmured. "There's been activity spotted in the skies. The Epsilon Operatives have been informed, Kitsune-sama." Naruto nodded, digesting the news. "Any word from Hound?" Boar shook his head, and Naruto's brows knit slightly. It was unlike Hound to go silent, even on a black-ops mission. After a beat, Naruto sighed, feeling the weight of duty settle back over him. The fleeting feeling of freedom he'd found with Temari now seemed like a distant memory. "Thank you, Boar-san." The ANBU operative vanished, leaving Naruto alone once more. He stayed on the rooftop a little while longer, watching the stars and savoring the rare quiet before the responsibilities of his life called him back into the shadows. For now, he allowed himself to linger in the memory of tonight, the laughter, the gentle thrill of a shared glance—and the feeling of being seen, truly seen, if only for a moment.
Shadows of Sand and Blood END
Author's Notes: Well this took a week to make but it was definitely worth the time, I also worked out why chunin and genin were sent after Gaara with just a few jonin but everything worked out so I added a twist. I bet a few of you are wondering exactly who Tobi is but in due time that'll be revealed but it definitely took some thinking on that front and I think someone will figure it out. In other news I wanted conflict with Sasuke, I didn't want what made him to disappear so I'll be expanding on that and other characters in due time and this part will be longer. I NEED someone to bounce these ideas off of.
