The Encore of Batch 89
Chapter 9: Digital Dancing!
As Lylla, Teefs, and Floor prepared to leave the cantina, the hum of anticipation filled the air. They were on the cusp of a new adventure, eager to find someone who could help Floor master her burgeoning hacking skills. It took a few days to hear a rumor of a certain space station where a master hacker might hang out. Not exactly a longshot, but not a sure thing either. But it was the best they had.
Just as they were about to step out, Suzy and her father approached them, their expressions a mix of gratitude and solemnity.
"Wait, before you go," Suzy's father began, his serpentine eyes reflecting deep sincerity. "In our culture, it is customary to present a gift to the leader of a heroic group as a token of our deepest thanks."
He unfurled a bundle he had been holding carefully, revealing a set of exquisite blue robes. The fabric shimmered under the dim lights of the cantina, its surface catching and reflecting light like water rippling under the sun. The robes were a deep cerulean, the color of a serene ocean, with intricate patterns of silver thread running along the hem and sleeves, depicting swirling waves and celestial symbols. The clasp, holding the robes together at the chest, was a finely crafted red jewel, its facets gleaming like a captured star. A matching jewel adorned the hood, set into the fabric with delicate precision, giving the garment an air of regality.
Lylla's eyes widened in awe as she took in the beauty of the gift. "This is… incredible," she whispered, her voice tinged with emotion. "But I couldn't have done it without Teefs and Floor. They were just as much a part of this as I was."
Suzy's father gently shook his head, a warm smile curling on his lips. "You may have succeeded together, but as the leader, it is you who receives this gift. It is our tradition."
Teefs grinned and nudged Lylla playfully. "C'mon, Lylla. Try it on! We gotta see how it looks!"
Floor, her excitement palpable, chimed in. "Yes, yes! Lylla look pretty! Put it on, put it on!"
With a soft laugh, Lylla carefully slipped into the robes. The fabric was smooth and cool against her fur, fitting her perfectly as though it had been made just for her. The weight of the jewels was reassuring, a reminder of the responsibility and honor she bore. She pulled the hood over her head, feeling an unexpected sense of peace and confidence.
Suzy's face lit up with pride. "I sewed it myself," she said, her voice brimming with pride. "I wanted it to be perfect for you."
Lylla placed a gentle cybernetic hand on her shoulder. "You've outdone yourself, Suzy. I will wear these robes with honor, and I promise to always remember you and your father."
Suzy's father bowed his head respectfully. "You deserve so much more for saving all of those children. This is but a small token of our gratitude."
With heartfelt goodbyes exchanged, Lylla, Teefs, and Floor boarded The Raccoon. As the ship lifted off, the trio waved to Suzy and her father, who watched from below with smiles. The ship soared into the sky, carrying the heroes toward their next journey, their hearts full of hope and determination.
The atmosphere in the smugglers' den was thick with the scent of unwashed bodies, spilled drinks, and the faint hum of illicit activities. It was on a space station, out of the way of Nova Corps. It operated under the rule of "all for one and one for all." Not necessarily dangerous provided you were here just to buy something or sell something. The dim lighting cast long shadows, and the low murmur of conversations was punctuated by bursts of laughter and the occasional clink of glasses. Lylla, Teefs, and Floor walked through the crowded space, their eyes scanning the eclectic mix of patrons.
"Keep your eyes peeled," Lylla whispered, her ears twitching as she surveyed the room. Her hand was in her new robes, clutching her lazer pistol, "We're looking for someone who looks like they can help Floor hone her hacking abilities. Someone that looks like they know a lot about computers"
Teefs nudged Lylla with a robot arm and asked, "Hey, what about a floating robot head? Could that be it?"
Lylla gave him a curious look. "That's an oddly specific question, Teefs."
Teefs pointed across the room. "No, seriously, look!"
Lylla followed his gaze and spotted a floating robotic head with a sleek, metallic finish and a pair of glowing green eyes. Next to it sat a male Pluvian with a crystalline body that shimmered like polished ice. The pair were an unusual sight, even in a place like this.
The trio approached cautiously, and Lylla introduced herself. "Excuse, I'm Lylla, and these are my friends, Teefs and Floor. We've got some big plans. Plans that will take us who knows where. We'll end up needing to do a lot of hacking, and you look like someone who can give a few pointers."
The floating head's eyes lit up with a cheerful glow. "Well, sure I can! Name's Mainframe," she said in a peppy, high-pitched voice. "Totes can help, but my lessons come with a price. And lemme tell ya, they ain't cheap!"
Floor giggled, finding Mainframe's exuberant demeanor infectious. "Me like her!" she declared.
"Aww, you're just adorable!" Mainframe cooed.
"Mainframe teach Floor to hack better?" Floor asked.
"So, you're the little hacker, huh? Didn't see that coming!" Mainframe replied.
Lylla nodded, smiling. "Yes, Floor here is our hacker."
Mainframe turned to her friend and said, "Martinex, toss her your data pad. Let's see what she's got."
The Pluvian, Martinex, chuckled and slid a sleek data pad across the table to Floor. "Alright, kiddo, show us what you can do. Can't say I'm expecting much, though."
Floor jumped up onto the table and stepped over to the device. She stared at the screen, her brow furrowing and her cybernetic legs tapping. "Where are 1s and 0s?" she asked, tilting her head in confusion.
Mainframe's eyes dimmed as if narrowing. "Wait, you don't know how to get into the code? How do you hack?"
Teefs interjected with a tusk filled grin. "I punched the computer for her."
Martinex scoffed and tapped the side of his head, his crystalline body clicking wity each tap.
Mainframe tilted slightly, "Well, that's one way to do it, I guess. Here, let me help." She manipulated the data pad, revealing the lines of code beneath the surface.
The moment the code appeared, Floor's eyes lit up. She eagerly began typing away, her tiny paws a blur of movement. In seconds, she leaned back with a triumphant cheer. "Done!"
Mainframe and Martinex exchanged astonished glances. Martinex's expression was a mix of disbelief and amazement as he snatched back the data pad, "She just unlocked everything... in seconds," Martinex muttered.
Mainframe floated closer, her tone serious now. "Kid, you've got a real gift for manipulating raw code. But getting initial access seems to be your weak spot. Lucky for you, I've got just the thing—a cybernetic tunneling device. Show her, Martinex."
Martinex resented a sleek metal band with a long wire. At the end of the wire was a suction cup with a glowing light in the center.
"The end of this thing is filled with a load of nanomachines," Mainframe explained, "This little beauty will let you dive straight into the code of any computer, but you only get one shot, then the nanomachines will get ejected and you'll have to break in the hard way with subroutines and scripts and all that junk. I don't have the time to teach you alla that, so if I were you I'd just buy this and make sure do your hacks right on the first try. From what I've seen, you can do that. This gadget isn't cheap, but for you, totes worth it. Take it or leave it."
Lylla nodded, her mind made up. "We'll take it."
The price was pretty eye popping, but the reward they got from Nova Corps for saving the kids on the school ship was enough to cover it. After transferring the credits, Floor carefully slipped the band onto her paw. "Thank you, Mainframe," she said, her voice filled with gratitude.
"Anytime, kiddo," Mainframe replied with a wink. "Good luck out there!"
As they turned to leave, Martinex watched them go thoughtfully. Although his focus was primarily on Lylla. Once they had left, he asked, "You know, that girl in the blue robes... She reminded me of Rocket Raccoon."
Mainframe's eyes flickered thoughtfully. "Could be a coincidence... but maybe we should ask Gamora when we meet up with the other Ravagers."
With that, the duo settled back into their corner, their thoughts lingering on the curious trio that had just walked in and out of their lives.
