The cramped and slightly dingy room of Beso Rápido, a roadside motel in Mexico. Sunlight streams in through a slightly crooked curtain. Clothes are scattered, indicating a hurried milling about, some stretching, others already searching. Yume is happily unwrapping her Breakfast Burger.
Maira: (Rubbing her eyes) Okay, people, let's try and get organized. We're not finding Mew by everyone wandering around aimlessly.
Kotoko: (Looking under a lumpy pillow) Oh, Mew, where are you? You must be so scared.
Asahi: (Quietly looking under the bed) I haven't seen her since we checked in last night.
Haruhito: (Yawning loudly) Ugh, what time is it? I feel like I slept in a…well, a motel bed.
Akihito: (Peeking behind a dusty chair) She's definitely not here.
Tokiwa: Let's check systematically. Maira, could you take the area around the suitcases? Haruhito, how about the… (gestures vaguely) everything else area?
Haruhito: (Grumbling) Fine, fine. But I need coffee first. And maybe a stronger definition of 'everything else area'.
Yume: (Mouth full of burger) You guys want a bite? This is, like, really good. Carl's Jr. Breakfast Burger!
Maira: (Sighs) Yume, now is NOT the time. We need to find Mew.
Kotoko: (Eyes welling up) What if she got outside? What if she's all alone?
Tokiwa: (Placing a hand on Kotoko's shoulder) Let's not jump to conclusions, Kotoko. We'll find her. Maybe she's hiding somewhere small?
Asahi: (Crawling back from under the bed) I checked. Nothing.
Haruhito: (Rifling through a pile of clothes) What about under the... oh. (Pulls out a crumpled t-shirt). Nothing here either. Just my questionable fashion choices from last night.
Akihito: Maybe she went into someone else's room?
Tokiwa: We should probably check the common areas first. Let's not go around barging into other people's doors.
Maira: Okay, fine. But please check quickly. I ordered a Grilled Cheese Breakfast Sandwich Combo but it will get cold if we take too long.
Yume: (Happily) I got the burger instead. It was yummy! You should try it!
Kotoko: (Looking increasingly distraught) I just want Mew back… She's so special.
Tokiwa: We understand, Kotoko. We all want to find her. Let's just…think about where a small, slightly purple cat might hide. And… let's try to not let all the yummy breakfast get cold!
Haruhito: (Grabbing his half-eaten sandwich) Right. I'm ready to find this little fuzzball. And then maybe get some more coffee.
(The group slowly starts to move toward the door, a mix of determination and breakfast-fueled energy. The search, and the mystery of Mew's disappearance, continues. The wind howled a mournful tune through the tall grass as Mew, a light violet kitten with one perpetually wonky ear, whimpered. Beside him, Rei, a pristine white kitten, trembled. Three mountain lions, their eyes glinting cruelly in the twilight, circled them.)
Mew: (Squeaking) Rei! I… I don't think we're going to make it!~mya
Rei: (Weakly) I know… It's been so long since we saw Mama…
A low growl erupted from the biggest mountain lion. It took a step closer.
Mew: (Panicked) This…this is it!~mya
Suddenly, a yell cut through the air. "Hold it right there, you mangy beasts!"
From the shadows, a group of stuffed kittens charged, a blur of various colours and sizes. Leading the charge was Montezuma, a magnificent long-haired kitten with a regal air, despite his stitched-on features. He wielded a tiny, plastic sword.
Montezuma: (In a surprisingly deep voice for a stuffed kitten) Leave them be! You'll face the wrath of the Whisker Warriors!
The mountain lions paused, momentarily surprised by the sudden onslaught. The smaller kittens, emboldened by Montezuma's bravery, swiped at the mountain lions with equally tiny, improvised weapons – twigs, small stones, and even a discarded bottle cap.
Rei: (Gasping) Who… who are they?
Mew: I… I don't know! But they're saving us!~mya
One of the smaller kittens, a ginger named Pip, tripped and tumbled. A mountain lion lunged.
Montezuma: (Roaring) Pip!
Montezuma leaped, using his surprisingly long fur as a shield, knocking the mountain lion off balance. The other kittens took advantage of the distraction, showering the lions with a flurry of imaginary blows.
The mountain lions, overwhelmed by the sheer number of kittens and their surprisingly fierce defense, eventually backed down, slinking away into the darkness.
Montezuma: (Panting, straightening his fur) Are you alright?
Mew: (Shaking) Yes… yes, thank you. We… we owe you our lives.~mya
Rei: (Nuzzling Montezuma's paw) You're a hero, Montezuma!
Montezuma: (Chuckling softly) Just doing my duty. Now, come along. We'll get you back to safety. We have hot cocoa and… a particularly good batch of knitted catnip mice waiting for you back at camp.
The rescued kittens followed Montezuma and his courageous band back into the darkness, leaving the scene of their near-death experience behind, grateful for their unexpected salvation.
Montezuma: (Approaching Mew with a dignified air) We are the Stuffed Kittens. Tiny, yes, but mighty. You've witnessed it yourself.
He nudged Mew gently with his head. "You seemed lost and afraid, little one. Do you know what's missing?"
Mew: I… I don't know.~mya
Montezuma: You haven't found your bark yet. Every Stuffed Kitten has a bark – a strength, a purpose. Yours is waiting to be discovered.
Rei: (Nuzzling Mew) He's right, Mew. You were so brave facing those lions.
Montezuma: We could offer you a home among us. Safety, camaraderie…
Mew looked at the supportive group of kittens, their faces filled with concern and kindness. Her heart ached with a new understanding.
Mew: Thank you, Montezuma. But… someone is waiting for me.~mya
Montezuma: Ah, yes. The call of home. A powerful bark indeed. Remember what you've learned here.
Mew thought of Peko and Suu. The fear and uncertainty of the attack had made her see things clearly. She'd been too scared to give her feelings for him a chance.
Mew: (Tears welling in her eyes) I… I love Peko and Suu. I just… I never gave them a chance.~mya
Rei: Go find them, Mew. Show them your bark.
Mew smiled, a genuine smile this time, not the terrified grimace from before. She nodded, her violet fur gleaming in the setting sun. "Thank you," she whispered, then turned and ran, her tiny paws carrying her towards the distant horizon, towards a chance at love and a future she'd never quite been brave enough to pursue before.
El Diablo enters the alleyway, his powerful paws padding almost silently on the dusty ground. He sniffs the air, his nostrils flaring. His gaze is sharp and focused.
El Diablo: (A low growl rumbles in his chest, more felt than heard) Ah, the scent of cheap stuffing and synthetic fur. I'm getting closer.
(Mew whimpers softly, pressing herself further against the grimy brick wall.)
Rei: (Whispering urgently) Mew, stay behind me. Don't make a sound.
El Diablo: (His head snaps up, pinpointing their location behind a pile of discarded cardboard boxes) Hiding won't save you, little toys. Vasquez wants the violet one. And what Vasquez wants… Vasquez gets.
Mew: (Her voice is a tiny squeak) We don't belong to him. We belong to Yume.~mya
El Diablo: (A harsh bark escapes his throat) Belong? You are baubles. Playthings. Sofia's precious little gatitos. Sentimental nonsense. Vasquez has a more… practical use for you.
Rei: (Stepping forward slightly, trying to appear larger than he is) Leave her alone. We've done nothing to you.
El Diablo: (A sneer curls his lip, revealing sharp teeth) Nothing to me? You've led me on a merry chase across half the country, that's what. From the crowded markets of that sprawling city to this dusty corner of nowhere. It's been… tiresome.
Mew: (Tears well up in her button eyes) We just wanted to go home.~mya
El Diablo: Home? (He takes a slow, deliberate step closer) Your home is wherever Vasquez decides it is. And right now, he's decided it's with him.
Rei: We won't go without a fight!
(Rei attempts a small, pathetic hiss. El Diablo merely stares at him, unimpressed.)
El Diablo: Fight? You? (He lets out a short, humorless laugh) Look at you. A fluffy white puffball trying to play the brave protector. Amusing.
Mew: (Plucking up a little courage) You can't take us. We're too fast.~mya
El Diablo: (His eyes glint with amusement) Fast? I've chased down rabbits in the Argentinean pampas that could outrun the wind. You two barely manage a clumsy stumble.
(El Diablo lowers his head, his stance becoming more predatory. He takes another step, closing the distance.)
El Diablo: Enough with the games. Come quietly, little violet. It will be easier for both of us.
Rei: Never!
(Rei lunges forward, attempting to bite El Diablo's leg. He's too small, and El Diablo barely flinches. The Doberman easily sidesteps the clumsy attack.)
El Diablo: Foolish.
(With lightning speed, El Diablo pins Rei to the ground with a single, massive paw. Rei lets out a muffled squeak of fear and pain.)
Mew: (Gasps) Rei!~mya
El Diablo: (Looking down at Rei, his voice cold) Now, little violet. Are you going to make this difficult, or are you going to save your friend some unnecessary discomfort?
(Mew trembles, torn between her own fear and the sight of Rei trapped beneath the large dog's paw. The shadows in the alleyway seem to deepen, and the only sound is El Diablo's heavy breathing and Rei's whimpering.)
