Later that evening, while Laney wipes down the diner table at Frenchy's, where she works, Nick walks in to pick up his to-go order.
Upon arrival, he speaks to the lady at the counter. "Hi, order for Nick."
Laney looks out the window and sees the scorpions drive up with her brother in the back seat. She sighs before tossing her rag on the table and heading outside.
"So, what I'm hearing is you're gonna be our inside man," LJ said to Mikey.
"This makes it way easier for him to steal the victory bell."
"Wait, you guys were serious about that?" Mikey asked.
"Of course," LJ responded. "How else do you expect to be a part of the gang?" "Look, kid, it's called initiation; we all had to do something to get here, and if you want to join us then you've gotta prove yourself."
"Mikey! Mikey, what did mom say about hanging out with these jerks!?" Laney stormed over to LJ's vehicle.
"Laney, you know, you really break my heart when you call me names like that," LJ sarcastically said as he and the others exited the vehicle.
"Your broken heart is the least of my problems. Mickey get inside, now!"
"Hey, go easy on the kid," LJ said. "We were just giving him a ride. I could give you a ride sometime, too." LJ grabs her by the waist.
"Get off of me." Laney squirms as she tries to get loose.
"Hey! Let her go!" Nick yelled as he approached the scene with attitude.
"Haha, check the dude, man." LJ laughed at him then grabbed his to-go bag. "What's this?" LJ opens the bag. "A burger for the chick," LJ smirked as he took a large bite of Nicks burger.
"Come on," Nick said to Laney. "Let's get you back inside." He stared at LJ as he stepped away with caution.
"Thanks for the burger!" LJ waved it up in the air before he and his posse got back into the car and drove away.
Mikey followed his sister inside and walked straight over to the payphone.
"Thanks for that," Laney said. "I can get you another burger. Lou! How bout another burger for my friend here? What's the name?"
"Nick."
"You want ketchup, Nick?"
"Of course, how can you eat a burger without ketchup?"
"With ketchup!" Laney yelled.
"Double ketchup!" Nick yelled out to Lou, making Laney smile.
While driving down the road, LJ and his friends notice a car following them.
"I think we've got a tail."
LJ turns into a neighborhood and the tail follows. He makes another turn, and again, the tail follows. He puts his car in park and quickly gets out. He storms straight over to the driver.
"You've got about five seconds to explain yourself before I rearrange your face." He reaches through the window and grabs his collar.
"Um, I'm with the school board of education, the name is Cutler. Steven Cutler." He explained with a slight shiver in his voice.
"Yeah? What do you want? Why are you following me?" LJ let go of his collar as Mr. Cutler reached for the camera sitting on the passenger seat.
Back at the diner, Mickey gets picked up by his mom. She blares the horn when she drives up.
"Mom's here. I'm leaving."
"What? Mickey my shift isn't over for another hour. Why did you call her?"
"Well, I don't know, Laney; maybe because my ride left me when you yelled at them! So now I'm taking yours," He gave her attitude.
"It's ok; I can walk you home," Nick quickly suggested a solution that would lead to spending more time with her.
"You don't mind?"
"Not at all," Nick replied.
"Let Mom know I have a way home."
Mickey rolled his eyes. "Yeah, whatever," he said before walking out.
Meanwhile, Rizzo and Frenchy spend their evening driving around town.
"What are we looking for, exactly?" Frenchy asked.
"Students, ideas, something to get students to WANT to attend Rydell High," Rizzo explained.
"We could do a carnival; kids love rides."
"There's an idea," Rizzo said.
"Yeah," Frenchy continued. "We can make it big; we could make it like Disneyland! On a budget, of course."
Rizzo hit the breaks and Frenchy flew slightly forward. "Look at that!" Rizzo said as she gazed at a billboard with Cha Cha's face on it!
"Learn to cha cha with Cha Cha, the best dancer from St. Bernadette," Frenchy read the advertisement aloud.
"That ought to do it," Rizzo said.
"Do what?" Frenchy asked.
"Hold on to your pantyhose French," Rizzo said as she quickly made a U-turn on the highway, causing oncoming traffic to steer out of the lane and blare their horns!
Laney turns off the open sign at Frenchy's. She and Nick walk out and she locks the door behind her. They begin walking in separate directions.
"If we cut through the park, it's much faster," Laney said.
"I figured we'd go around and walk through the train tracks," Nick replied.
"That would take longer, and I'm a little tired," she paused for a response from Nick who was hesitant. "Look, if you're too scared to walk through scorpion territory, I'd understand," Laney said.
"Me, scared? Ha, ha, ha. Don't make me laugh."
"So, through the park then?" Laney asked.
With hesitation he began walking in the same direction as her.
Hiding behind a large tree trunk he pokes his head out. Laney taps his shoulder and whispers. "What are we doing?"
"Nothing, making sure the coast is clear, from dogs and such," he replied. He took one more glance around the park then grabbed her left hand. "It's clear." He scurried through the park while looking over his shoulder.
"Do you even know where you're going?" "Oh, right," he pauses. "Which way?"
"That way," Laney pointed.
Nick continued to speedwalk while pulling Laney by the hand.
"There. My house is there," she pointed across the street. Nick walks her to the front porch. "Ah, we made it. Nice house." Nick said while panting.
"Thanks," Laney said as she massaged her left shoulder. "So much for a romantic walk through the park. You nearly pulled my arm out my socket."
"Sorry about that; I'll walk slower next time," Nick said.
"Oh yeah, so there's gonna be a next time?"
"You bet your right arm there is."
Nick's joke made Laney laugh; for a moment, he had forgotten he was in scorpion territory as he gazed into Laney's eyes.
"How's tomorrow sound? I can probably get my mom's car and pick you up around eight."
"Sounds perfect," she said.
"Ok, see you tomorrow," he said.
She kissed his cheek before saying goodnight, then walked inside.
Nick backed away with a smile on his face. He knocked over several metal trash cans, causing a loud commotion. The neighborhood dogs began to bark and Nick quickly ran away scared out of his mind!
