Barn:Day…
"I told you we can if we do it this way!" Jason argued.
"The power distribution would be too high, and the wires will fry!" Peridot retorted.
"What massive power output could there be to fry these wires?!"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe it has something to do with the laser you added!"
"Hey, we have no idea what will be on the way to the Cluster, so it pays to be prepared!"
"Prepared for what!? Evil sentient molten rocks! That laser produces a lot of power, so if we don't do something, it'll fry the wires! We need to spread the power distribution among dozens of wires. That way we can afford to lose them if something goes wrong."
"We don't need over a dozen wires! We just need a few reinforced ones to transfer the power!"
"And I told you we can't afford to!"
"And I know exactly what I'm doing!"
"And I—!"
"But you—!"
Jason and Peridot bickered with each other while leaning over an assortment of components. Because of them, some of the major components for the machine were already made, but there was plenty of work to do before they even thought of putting them in the main body.
Steven, Amethyst, and Lapis were off to the side. glancing left to right between the two of them as they continued to yell. Pearl was busy working on the drill, Peridot has the electronics, and Jason gravitated between to make sure everything came together.
"How long have they been going at it?" Steven asked.
"I don't know." Amethyst commented. "Like, an hour maybe."
"Sounds about right." Lapis added with a smile, glad Jason wasn't letting Peridot have her way.
"Alright, I'm back, and…" Garnet began but stopped as she noticed the hybrid and green gem yelling at each other. "They're still going at it? I left over an hour ago."
"Ughhh! I can't work like this." Pearl grumbled before stomping away from the chalkboard. "Will you two knock it off already!? We need to work together to…"
"Pint-sized imp!"
"Deformed, hybrid clod!"
They completely ignore her, or haven't noticed her, as they now start flinging insults. Pearl let out a sigh and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
Garnet walked past her. "Hey!"
The two of them glared at the fusion. "WHAT!?"
Garnet kept her same, neutral expression. "I chased away those cows."
The statement immediately diminished their anger at how simple it sounded. Plus, the straw in her mouth added to her expression. The two of them looked back at each other before looking away.
Peridot cleared her throat. "Yes, yes. Very good."
"Mm-hm. Quite." Jason agreed, picking up the panel. "Let's get back to the others, shall we?"
"Yes, we shall." She walked back to the others ahead of Jason.
"Clods...Muddy clods...Running out of ways to say 'clods'!"
Jason glanced at Peridot as she brought out a recorder and was fast forwarding to the other words. He groaned in annoyance as his gems glowed.
Garnet knew he was about to summon a sword. "Noooo."
Jason groaned as he let the gem dull and walked back to the others. "Alright, we good?"
"Yes, let's get to work." Garnet stated with a smile.
"Eh-hem." Everyone looked at Peridot. "Before we begin, would you mind unfusing? It's making me incredibly uncomfortable."
Everyone shifted their stares to the fusion, who stared at the green gem with a stoic expression. Garnet didn't take too kindly to that and ended up putting Peridot in a time-out. This involved tying her to the fence with a child leash and harness.
"What did I say!?" Peridot asked confused before noticing the soldier smirking. "Not a word."
Jason laughed before joining the others away from the green gem.
"Do we really have to do that?" Steven asked.
"I'd say it's a necessity." Lapis commented.
"I'm personally enjoying this." Jason added.
"Her having free reign of the place made me uncomfortable." Garnet finished.
Looking back, everyone saw Peridot struggling to move with the child leash on, and she was flailing her arms around to grab the microwave just out of her reach. She managed to stick her foot out though and nudge it closer to her.
Peridot continued to work on the microwave, Garnet and Lapis were sifting through the junk in the barn, Steven and Amethyst gathered materials Pearl needed, and Jason was looking at the drawings on the chalkboard.
"Here you go, Pearl!" Steven and Amethyst brought a bunch of metal over.
She turned off the welding torch and flipped open her welding mask. "Oh, good. Hmm…" She looked curiously at the bits of metal before looking disappointed. "No, I said I needed tungsten."
"If you need tungsten, I have plenty of guns made from the stuff in my SUV." Jason stated while nodding towards the vehicle, he and Lapis took to sleeping in there. "I could go get them."
"Tungsten can be used for firearms?" Pearl asked curiously.
"Sure." Jason shrugged. "Some of the heavier weapons use it."
"Great!" Pearl clasped her hands together. "Gather all the tungsten you can spare."
Jason grabbed a crate from the barn and brought it to his SUV before looking through his stash. He shifted through all his weapons and bullets before loading up everything he had that was comprised of tungsten. He then brought it to Pearl.
"Alright, got the stuff we need!" Jason sat the crate down. "What next?"
"You're going back to your place with Amethyst, Steven, and Peridot." Garnet declared.
"Why?" Jason questioned.
Beach: Beach House
Peridot had the idea to grab one of the injectors from the Kindergarten since they had drills on them. There was one problem there. Jason had gathered up all the injectors on Earth and stored them within his and Lapis' home.
Even though the water gem had been slowly thawing to the green gem's presence, the soldier knew she wouldn't be comfortable having Peridot set foot in their home. While Jason had also thawed to her, he did not want Peridot in his complex.
At the same time, Peridot has been relatively peaceful and deserved to get out a bit. In the end, Jason reached a compromise with Garnet that saw Peridot get to come to beach where Jason would drop off an injector.
"Log date-7112." Peridot spoke into her tape recorder Steven had given her. "The Amethyst, the Jason, and the Steven have volunteered to help me dismantle this Era 1 drill. How stylistically displeasing. The newer ones have a nicer finish."
"Peridot, don't insult my technology." Jason stated.
"Your technology?" Peridot questioned incredulously.
"Homeworld left everything they did on Earth, and it's been here for thousands of years with none of you coming back to claim it." Jason retorted. "So, I laid my claim to it. If you don't like it, take it up with me, but I will most assuredly say it's my technology."
"The Jason has annoyingly lain claim on all technology left by Homeworld." Peridot stated into her recorder before clicking it off.
"You've been making more nerd notes?" Amethyst teased.
"What is 'nerd'?" Peridot questioned.
"It's basically a term for being smart." Jason replied.
While Amethyst snickered, Peridot looks confused. "Can you use it in a sentence?"
Amethyst cleared her throat. "Nerd. You are a nerd."
As the purple gem laughed, Steven slid down next to Amethyst. "Amethyst, cut that out."
"As you can see, this planet and everything on it is annoying." Peridot was making another note. "Amongst its transgressions, the need for the Amethyst to ask permission from the perma-fusion."
"Perma-fusion?" Jason asked curiously. "You mean Garnet?"
"Of course, I mean her, but I could call her two things! Two clods!" Peridot laughed as she gestured with two fingers. "Walking around like she's one clod!"
"What's wrong with that?" Steven asked.
"She's not even fighting! She's, you know, she's just, y-you know like the...you know!" Peridot tried and failed horribly at explaining the issue.
Steven and Jason had no idea what she meant while Amethyst continued to laugh. "You're a real gem, Peri."
"Yes, I am…a gem." She returned, confused by the wording.
"Do Steven next." Amethyst stated while pointing at said boy. "What's weird about him?"
"Where do I even begin? He's some sort of hybrid abomination, and I don't even understand how he functions. His organic half consumes so much energy he must constantly feed, and he spends so much time expelling that he has a whole room dedicated to it."
"Now Jason." Amethyst managed to say in between her laughing.
Before Peridot could start, Jason stood up and let his electricity flow. With a grunt, he grabbed the main body of the drill and tore the metal. With it exposed, the soldier summoned one sword and drove it through the opening.
Once it was deep enough, he wedged it to the side opening the hole more and sliding it down to separate more of the metal. With a sharp rap of his sword, he pulled it out and stabbed it into the ground just in case he needed it again.
"I would prefer not to." Peridot reasoned, making Jason smile smugly.
Amethyst started to laugh again, and Peridot joined in as she examined the purple gem. "The strangest thing is, you think you have to listen to them when you should be the one in charge!"
"Ha, that's your best joke yet." Amethyst commented.
"No, really." Peridot stated. "Pearl is a pearl, Garnet is a fusion, and I don't even know what these two are supposed to be!"
"Hey!" Jason/Steven complained.
"You're the only Crystal Gem that's actually a gem!" Peridot stated.
"Uhm…eh he he what?" Amethyst laughed nervously.
"You outrank everyone on your team, so they should be listening to you." Peridot continued. "You're a strong, singular soldier despite the fact you're defective."
"Defective?" Amethyst asked.
"Well sure. You're small."
"So?"
"Well, you're not supposed to be!" Peridot continued. "I'm betting the hole you came from was too small and newer than any other hole there. In that sense, it's no wonder you have no idea what you're supposed to look like!"
"Peridot…" Steven warned cautiously.
"What was I supposed to look like?" Amethyst asked.
"Well, you're a quartz. They're huge, loyal soldiers." Peridot explained. "You should be twice your size, broad shouldered, and intimidating; however, you simply stayed in the ground too long."
"Are you saying I'm wrong!?" Amethyst asked angrily.
"Gemetically speaking, yes." Peridot replied. "When you think about it, it's all so funny."
"Peridot, are you telling me Amethyst is supposed to look like Jasper!?" Jason questioned angrily.
"Well, sure!" Peridot shrugged. "Somewhat like Jasper. Hey soldier, maybe you can help me get this hunk of drill off…" Amethyst interrupted Peridot by pulling out her whip and slicing off the drill head. "See, you can do everything a normal quartz can do. Now, let's head back."
"Amethyst, are you ok?" Steven asked worriedly.
"Don't worry about it." Amethyst stated in a low, depressed voice before stalking off.
The two hybrids stared after their friend before looking at each other.
Jason returned his sword with a sigh. "Things were going well to."
Steven nodded sadly. "Yeah."
Barn
"Oh, it's lovely!" Pearl happily stated as she examined the drill. "To think we'd be using the same technology that started all this to fix it. This drill is pure irony."
"Actually, it's mostly carbonite." Peridot stated from her usual spot at the fence.
"Would that make it 'carbony'?" Steven questioned from next to her, sorting through all the screws and lug nuts.
Jason didn't really hear more of what they were talking about as he noticed Lapis on the roof and decided to jump up to her.
"It's a shame we can't use your droids." Lapis commented. "They'd be a huge help."
"Yeah, they would." Jason sighed. "Unfortunately, if we bring them here, there isn't a doubt in my mind Peridot will go ballistic like she is right now."
"Who cares about any of you! You're all just rocks! Ruddy, muddy, clumps beneath my gravity connectors!" Peridot exclaimed angrily.
"She's not as intimidating as I remember." Lapis commented.
"She doesn't have to be intimidating to you at all Lapis." Jason assured. "Just remember, you're an incredibly powerful gem who's going out of her way to become even stronger through mastering a weapon. Honestly, I think you could take her without a source of water or weapon."
"Thanks Jason." Lapis laid her head on the soldier's shoulder as her gem glowed.
"I'm only speaking the truth." Jason smiled as his gem glowed.
The pair ended up fusing, though they didn't mean to, and became Jade. Even though Lapis and Jason did like existing as themselves, they didn't mind this right now. They just stared out at the vast countryside. Garnet glanced up at the fusion with a smile.
Hours Later…
Things progressed as normally as they could. Garnet and Pearl left to chase off more cows, Jade was off somewhere nearby, Amethyst was going around to make sure none of the cows got through, and Peridot was working on the drill with Steven holding her leash.
"This little thing…" Peridot grumbled as she continued to fiddle around with the panel she has attached to the inside of the drill's top. "Dyaagh!"
"How's everything going up there?" Steven asked.
"Fine. There's nothing wrong because everything's fine." In her anger, she accidentally pushed a button by mistake. "Ah! No, no, no, no, no, stop!"
"Peridot?" Steven asked worriedly.
Peridot suddenly jerked making, her fall off and cough. "The panel!" With a nod, Steven jumped onto the drill, but after he did, it started spinning at an insane pace. "Wait!"
The green gem tried to help, but the leash on her vest caught onto a piece of debris.
"It's okay, I got it!" Steven managed.
Amethyst picked the wrong time to come back as she stepped out from behind the barn. She saw the drill coming towards her, making the purple gem pause.
"Amethyst!" Peridot cried out in worry.
She struggled a bit at having her leash caught, but the green gem pushed herself to save the only gem she currently finds decent. The leash snapped, allowing Peridot to dash forward and get Amethyst out of the way.
"What!?" Jade had flown back to the scene and saw everything. "Steven!"
They rocketed into the ground before firing off water which wrapped around the drill counterclockwise, slowing it down. Steven then managed to right himself and grasped the panel attached to it. He quickly tore the device out, disabling the drill.
With it stopped, Steven got off the drill in a daze. "It's okay! Everything's okay!"
He was clearly dizzy, so Jade unfused before Jason ran over to help him regain his balance. Peridot and Amethyst were in an awkward situation, with Peridot sitting on top of a very surprised Amethyst.
"Uhhh…Peridot?" She asked.
"Ah!" Peridot quickly jumped off her. "It was an accident, I swear!"
"Hey, don't worry about it." Steven had recovered and walked over to them with Jason. "We know you didn't mean to start the drill."
Amethyst just looked at the green gem with a mix of confusion and shock. Peridot said some mean things back on the beach, whether she meant to or not, but her courageous act has put the purple gem off what she originally thought.
"We leave for one second and everything goes off the rails!" Pearl cries out loudly in horror as she and Garnet returned to see all the destruction.
"I blame the cows." Garnet stated.
"I blame you two." Jason retorted, after he and Lapis unfused. "You said you'd be here while Jade took a break. Then, they returned only to find you nowhere."
"Fair enough." Peral stated. "It's fine, it's fine. We'll rebuild it. Stronger and better. We'll even add seat belts!"
Evening…
Lapis ended up approaching Amethyst and Steven. "Hey, are you two alright?"
"We're fine." Amethyst replied.
"Yeah, we're good…especially you Amethyst." Steven looked at her. "It's a good thing Peridot was there to save you."
"Hm?" Lapis questioned.
"Amethyst was about to get messed up by the drill when Peridot pushed her out of the way. It was shortly before Jade reappeared.
"Huh, Peridot saved a Crystal Gem?" Lapis was shocked by that. "She could have let her get hit and ran off since we were all gone."
"Yes, it was a good thing." Peridot agreed before seeing Amethyst approach. "Listen, I…uhm…"
"Just spit it out." Amethyst stated in an annoyed tone.
Peridot looked shocked before getting angry and grunting. "Ughh!" She facepalmed. "Why are you earthlings so difficult!?"
She slapped her hand on top of her tape recorder, activating the playback. "Log date 7112. This entire planet is backwards. There hasn't been one instance of correct behavior exhibited by any one of these 'Crystal Gems'. I have concluded that they are all defective, but I am no better."
Those words gave everyone a pause. "I failed my mission, and now work with the enemy, which I can't seem to get right. I have apparently 'hurt' Amethyst's 'feelings' which was not my intent. I hope you understand. I want to understand. I'm sorry…Peridot. Facet 5. End log."
"Oh, Peridot." Steven stated emotionally.
Even Lapis couldn't help but smile.
"Peridot…thanks." Amethyst smiled, making the green gem smile before walking off. "But you're still a nerd."
She then approached the barn where Jason met her. "Hey, Amethyst."
"Oh, hey Jason." Amethyst nodded. "You need something?"
"I just wanted to talk about what Peridot herself said, 'See, look at that. You can do everything a normal quartz can do'." Jason smiled. "That means, despite you being apparently defective, you can be just as effective as a normal, twice-as-tall, intimidating quartz soldier."
A look of awe and realization graced Amethyst's face. "Wow…"
"A flaw makes you unique Amethyst." Jason continued. "If you hadn't been delayed those 500 years, then what are the chances you'd still be a Crystal Gem?" She looked down for a second as she contemplated that. "Peridot may have come off as a jerk, but she did raise some good points. You're not wrong in our eyes Amethyst. You never could be."
Jason then walked away as the purple gem smiled genuinely at his words.
CoolXZ2 (Ch. 1): Thank you.
dindagangleader14: Yeah.
