Chapter Five:
I pulled out a slender, flat metal device out of my back pocket, fidgeting with it, a slight glow emitting off of my fingers as I did so as Toothless rambled on about how nice it was not to worry about the other dragons for once. A beep escaped the item, making me smile. "There! I just boosted the signal on my phone so that I can still call Astrid!" I quickly pulled up my contacts, clicking on the first one listed.
"You better have a good reason for taking so long dropping Briar off at Berk!" Astrid's voice nearly bit off my head throw the smart phone.
"Sorry m'lady... but I need to freak out here for a second... you see... Briar's my sister! And my Mom's still alive! How!?" I am a master of not freaking out until alone with Toothless or Astrid. No one else gets to see me loose it... well... except Conner apparently.
~ Meanwhile, Stoic's POV~
Once Hiccup who was missing a leg, I must not freak out, left the house to do the minor tasks that hopefully will keep him away from the other teen parents, I made a break for it to the forge. No surprise flashed through me upon seeing that Spitelout as there, talking with Mr. Ingerman. Upon noticing me, they turned to face me, Spitelout scowling. Here we go again... "Lookie here... if it isn't the mighty chief who gets his precious baby boy back."
"Spitelout... For the last time, once Hiccup is feeling better after getting shot at, we'll ask him about the other teens." I pinched my nose, exasperation flooding through me.
Mr. Thornston walked up then, a grin splattered on his face. "Have you asked him about the leg thing yet?"
Panic immediately surged through me. MY SON IS MISSING A LEG! What am I supposed to do about that? Everything blurred as I sank low to the ground ,struggling to keep my breathing even.
"That's it... in and out... one two three one two three..." When did Mrs. Hofferson show up?
Shaking my head, I glanced up to see that I was now almost curled into a ball in a corner, the others standing over me. Great... not a position that any chief would want to get caught in. Makes one look weak. Straightening, I looked them firmly in the eye. "No one is questioning Hiccup about anything until tomorrow after dinner. Even then I am only giving everyone one hour. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes chief."
~Back to Hiccup's POV!~
"... And now I don't know what to do! I mean bad enough that Johan the Traitor clearly ignored our threats... and yes I know weird it is that he isn't listening to us... Astrid? What was that very loud, very suspicious explosion in the background?" I paused in my tirade, blinking slowly as I finally registered what the background noise was.
"Oh... that. That's nothing at all... TUFFNUT! YOU PUT THAT DOWN RIGHT THIS SECOND! Sorry Hiccup. I've got to go. Love you!"
"Love you too..." I clicked off the phone, slipping it back into my pocket even as I rubbed my face. Maybe I should remind her that I really don't like hearing that over the phone... "Just so you know bud, it sounds like the twins are pushing buttons again."
"Wow? Really? I wonder why... it's not like your the only person they truly respect enough to listen to and thus are fairly obedient... any idea what it is that they were blowing up this time back home?"
"Nope... hopefully it isn't anything too important like last time." I heaved a sigh, not liking being trapped so far from my friends... from my people. I worked hard to make our little oasis of peace... well as peaceful as you can get with my cousin and the twins living there. And dragons. Though really... my cousin and the twins were the worst ones.
A loud growl startled me out of my thoughts, jarring me into a battle stance as I grabbed Inferno's hilt from where it was still clipped to my leg. Laughter erupted from Toothless, as he nodded towards me. "Bro... that was your stomach... you've been here all day without anything to eat. Then again I haven't had anything to eat yet either..."
"I'll get you a bite to eat. Not entirely used to hunting for more than just me." Conner leapt up, wings spreading wide above us.
"I probably should head down to the Great Hall and get myself a bite to eat. Will you be alright without me?" I clipped Inferno back to my leg, pretending that I didn't just almost threaten my own bodily functions with a weapon.
Toothless suddenly flipped his tail forward, revealing that his own prosthetic was missing. "I can't go anywhere, so yeah. I'll be fine."
"I'll get our stuff back and then we'll head back to the Edge... what's left of it anyways." I shrugged, knowing very well that those in construction would have rebuilt anything that was destroyed.
"We don't even know where our stuff is..."
"I'll work on it... though if I see Johan before we leave I'm gonna remind him about that conversation we had the first time he tried to kill me." I stated in a flat, monotone voice, the same way someone would agree with someone else on the weather in an almost distracted tone of voice.
Toothless sniggered even as I left the arena.
I got lost... of course I would get lost on the way to the Great Hall. For starters, we don't have a Great Hall back on the Edge, and secondly, we have a completely different layout on top of that. Grumbling to myself, Fish 'n' chips at Marila's sounded amazing right about now... I shoved the door open, slipping in quietly. The loud chattering that had thankfully led me to the food stopped abruptly as everyone turned to stare at me. Panic began to slip in as I scanned the mostly familiar faces, freezing up upon realizing that Valka and Briar were sitting next to Dad. Yep. Nope. Not doing this. Where's the nearest empty booth and a menu... right. Not the Edge. This isn't a restaurant. After shuffling my way through the line to get some food, I located and sat down in a dark corner away from everybody. No one was going to notice me... and everyone is still staring at me...
Someone coughed loudly, which thankfully broke the spell and all eyes went back to their dinner and the many conversations resumed. Unfortunately... I could now hear what they were saying. Uh, my leg hasn't been a conversation topic in years. Lifting my fork up, I went to take a bite only to freeze when Who Let the Dogs Out started blaring from my back pocket...
A/N: I don't own the song! Obviously.
lizzielou525: Yep! I wanted his real name to be something really embarrassing!
catlovingmermaid: There. The others know. Hiccup called them... well... he called Astrid... Patience... Toothless isn't going to try to kill anyone for daring to get too close to Hiccup for a few more chapters.
omega13a: We're getting there. Sorry, I was going to have Hiccup's freakout over the phone last chapter but I want to keep it about this length so I moved it to this chapter instead. Stoic is trying to keep the other parents from crowding Hiccup out until he 'accepts' that he isn't running off again.
Toothless Lover 13: Yeah... and Toothless's tailfin, don't you think they should get that back too?
corbinace: I just really wanted a scene were Hiccup teases Toothless about his name.
mangaloverize: Sorry about not placing any of the explosive reactions in the last chapter, I was saving it for this chapter... and a later one. Which might be next chapter cause there is a thing called personalized ringtones... guess who's calling him!
MalirBly: Why thank you!
